Reading value of env variable

Hello.
Is there a cross-platform way to get values of enviromental variables?
For example, on Win98 we set up variables in autoexec.bat
SET %myvar%=value
On winNT we use enviroment variables properties.
On Linux it is profile files.
Is there a general way to get those values in Java programs?
Many thanks!

Hi Kevin
The answer is yes and no. You can retrieve some information re the java environment, the os and user settings from System.getProperty(String s) but I've not found a way of accessing all vars. If there is a SecurityManager in place you may find that you cannot even access these. See the doc for System.getProperties() for a full list of the default props that you can normally access.
Hope that this helps

• Reading value of bind variable

Hi,
I have been debugging a java application and in the process I wanted to know which values the application passed as bind variables. So i checked v$sql_bind_capture and enabled trace on the session. Unfortunately the datatype was TIMESTAMP, so the view did not show a value and all I got from the trace was a memory dump that is not of much use to me:
Bind#1
oacdty=180 mxl=11(11) mxlc=00 mal=00 scl=00 pre=00
oacflg=03 fl2=1000000 frm=01 csi=873 siz=0 off=24
kxsbbbfp=fffffd7ffdb6fbd0  bln=11  avl=07  flg=01
value=
Dump of memory from 0xFFFFFD7FFDB6FBD0 to 0xFFFFFD7FFDB6FBD7
FFFFFD7FFDB6FBD0 0D0B6C78 00010101 [xl......]Is there a function/way to convert this into a timestamp or at least the other way around?

Just ran this little test:
SQL> CREATE TABLE t (c1 TIMESTAMP);
Table created.
SQL> INSERT INTO t VALUES (TRUNC(SYSTIMESTAMP));
1 row created.
SQL> COMMIT;
Commit complete.
SQL> SELECT TO_CHAR(c1) FROM t
2  UNION
3  SELECT DUMP(c1) FROM t;
TO_CHAR(C1)
13-NOV-08 00.00.00.000000
Typ=180 Len=7: 120,108,11,13,1,1,1Converting those decimals to hex gives you 78,6C,0B,0D,01,01,01 which accounting for reverse byte order is the same as your memory dump. So I think the bind value is 13-NOV-2008 00:00:00:000000.
Not quite sure how to get from the hex directly back to the date/time, but I'm sure someone knows!
Actually, Google was quite useful... take 100 off the first two decimal values: 120-100 = 20; 108-100 = 08, to give you the year: 2008. Then the 11 and 13 are the month and day. The remainder are hour + 1, minute + 1, second + 1. So just convert your hex to decimal and you should be able to see the value clearly!

• Env variable for custom top showing diffent values

hi,

from the front end when we submit the "print environment variable" concurrent request it shows the following incorrect value

• Bind input field value to a variable fails

Business need : The user wants to re-evaluate lines by a percentage value which he fills via his BI-IP screen.
I created an INPUT FIELD in WAD and I am trying to link a variable value (initially created in BI-IP through transaction RSPLAN)
to this INPUT FIELD.
Whenever I fill the input field with a value, the value is not being transferred to the variable.
Please help how to bind an INPUT field value to a variable to be transmitted to a planning function.
I have made many trials but in vain.
Please help.

Hi.
I will present my scenario (it works in my system). From this scenario you may "cut" implementation for your scenario.
Lets sat I have an input fileld item and I want to read value (in my case numeric value) and pass this value to any planning sequence.
1. Create in Bex variable (in my case it is formula variable) lets say Z_INPUT_VAR
2. In WAD, when you executin planning sequence (lets say by pressing button execute) in command EXEC_PLANNING_SEQUENCE_SIMPLE define data binding.
When you clicked data binding->variable input MANUALY your variable name (Z_INPUT_VAR) in popup window.
3. In variable type select (ITEM_INPUT) type
4. In web item select your input field item.
This way you will pass inputed value to vaariable and planning sequence.
Then in planning function you also may use VARV() to read value of Z_INPUT_VAR variable.
Regards.

• PATH env. variable value if Oracle is installed

Hi,
When Oracle is installed on the machine,in such case if we type on command prompt "PATH" and enter (on Windows machine) then we see the first value pointing to the ORACLE INSTALLED directory.I want to know, does this value persist till we uninstall Oracle from machine?
What will happen if 2 applications want to share the same path, one application wants to chage the path value which will update ORACLE INSTALLED directory,and other one wants to keep it as it was earlier ?
Waiting for reply.
Thanks,
Rupesh

Agreed ! What I want to confirm is that the first value in PATH env. variable.
Does it remain same always ?
Like, if I type PATH on command line and press ENTER, I can see value of PATH variable as :
D:\ORACLE\BIN;C:\PRO\BIN;D:\ABC\BIN;....; and so on.
First value in above string is always ORACLE_HOME\bin directory. So, does it mean that, if Oracle is installed on machine, then PATH variable always sets it first place to search to ORACLE_HOME/bin directory ? is it so ? please suggest me.
Thanks,
Rupesh

When the loop starts, the value 10 is assigned to v_num. You should see that value displayed by the put_line statement.
After that, v_num is set to 10 - 1 = 9.
Next, the EXIT condition is evaluated. At this point, v_num is 9, not 0, so the loop runs again. V_num is set to 10 again, and the loop continues forever (or, in some versions, until the dbms_output buffer is filled and an error occurs.)

Hi Vinayak,
you will be having your first program values in internal table or some variables,
when you are calling the second program you wii use like this,
SUBMIT <Second Program Name> USING SELECTION-SCREEN '1000'
WITH s_emp(second program select-options) IN t_emp(first program variables)
WITH p_chk   EQ t_chk

WITH s_cust2 IN t_cust2
WITH s_week  IN t_week
AND RETURN.
you have pas like this to get your first program details.

• Displaying the value of an variable on the stage

I have managed to display the values contained in string variables on stage, and I am happy with that, however when I wish to display the value of an int and convert it to a string as one is supposed to do the output to the stage just calls it [class int] and does not give its value. any suggestions?
My rogram contains a stage at frame 1 which displays a word. The user must input a word. Frame 30 then displays the word which was displayed and the word input by the user. That all works fine. But the value of the variable NumberRight, which has been assigned to that variable will only display as [class int] without showing its value. (even though I have converet it to a string using the .to string function you see below).
My code is as follows;
trace( "The number correct was" + NumberRight); //This works fine in the output window and shows the value of the variable as NumberRight [class int]1 (showing the value to be 1)
outputText.appendText("in/"+textAtIN); //this works fine displaying the word presented and word input by user as in/in
outputText.appendText( NumberRight.toString( )); //here lies the problem as it just displays [class int] and nothing else.
Yes I have managed to overcome that problem it was some code on the first frame, please excuse, however, now, is there any way to remove the [class int] bit from the displays, I wish to have the results as a clear copy of the results so that they can be printed out, without [class int] all over the place?

Hi Ned thanks for that. Yes I had accidently created blank spaces in the String() argument. (wanted to check if there was a subsequent difference in display and forgot to return them to normal ...Sorted )
Your next suggestion has eliminated the [class int] but I get a value now of 0.
My code on the first frame for a correct response for example is;
function keyPressedIN(event:KeyboardEvent):void
if (event.keyCode == 13)/*Normally,this will move straight on to the next frame-
recording a correct response and all that that implies in terms of scores etc. But now I have re directed it to Frame 30 to check are the variables working properly*/
//insert code for correct responses vowels etc.
VowelI = VowelI+1;
NumberRight = NumberRight +1;
stage.focus = stage;
//There is no need to display the text box as this is a correct response.
pupilsResponseIN.visible = false;
mainText.visible = false;
gotoAndPlay(30);//at the moment this takes me to the display frame to check if all is ok
On the first frame when the user say hits the Return key my code assigns the value of +1 to the variable; eg
NumberRight=NumberRight+1;
and the value of +1 to the value of VowelI
VowelI=VowelI+1
At Frame 30 the code is as follows;
stop();
trace( "The number correct was"+ NumberRight);
outputText.appendText("in/"+textAtIN);
outputText.appendText( "\n");
outputText.appendText("Vowels Correct ="+(int(VowelI).toString()));
outputText.appendText( "\n");
outputText.appendText("TotalCorrect="+(int(NumberRight).toString()));
//outputText.appendText( VowelI.toString());
Now what I am getting is
in/in
Vowels Correct = O
Total Correct = O
Yet the trace (output box) records the Number correct as [class int]1
many years ago I wrote this same program in Authorware using similar code. I am trying to re write it in FlashCS5 using ActionScript 3 and It take days to solve small problems. I notice also that If for example the user of the program makes an error and I record the error as NumberRight =NumberRight -1 the program records it as Total Correct = NaN .
I gave up on this a few months back but I am trying again. I think there must be a better way to do this. Variables do not seem to add up or subtract for me at present. no doubt its me thats got it wrong.

• Default value in recordset variable

Hi,
I am using Dreamweaver 8.
I am not sure that I understand the function of the default
value in the variable area of the recordset. I'm using a search box
and sending the result on through the url. If the person types
something that is not in either of the two fields searched, is the
default value supposed to kick in? I have tried entering a value of
something that is actually in the field, but get a broken image
(x)...I'm displaying images.
What I would actually do is to display an error message on a
different page. Is there a SQL statement that could be put after
the search statement such "if not....go to url or
something"? If not, I was thinking of creating a blank
image with wording stating that there was no match.
Current recordset code:
SELECT*
FROM images
WHERE description LIKE %colname% OR picturenum = colname2
ORDER BY picturenum ASC
Name:colname
Type:Text
Default Value: montana (an actual word in the database)
Run-Time Value: $_GET['description']
Name:colname2
Type:Text
Default Value: A091 (an actual image in the database)
Run-Time Value: $_GET['description']
Current code works perfectly thanks to some direction by
David Powers....thanks David.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Cliff

The best way to accomplish this is to build the WHERE clause dynamically, or else have a different WHERE clause that you use in these situations. In other words, test the value of the querystring variables and if they are empty, use a different WHERE clause that does not include the address condition.
Also, this question belongs in the app dev forum.

• How to define and populate value to a variable in a text file

hi all,
i have a text file on unix server, when i read it through open dataset, is it possible to populate dynamic value to a variable in the text file. and is it possible to define a variable at any place in the text file?
after this the program will send the internal table for emailing.
thanks.

Hi, If this file on server is a email template you can put some tags / marks and you can change it after you read it with OPEN DATASET / READ...
Sample:
OPEN DATASET p_file FOR INPUT IN TEXT MODE ENCODING DEFAULT.
CHECK sy-subrc EQ 0.
DO.
READ DATASET p_file INTO lv_string.
IF sy-subrc EQ 0.
EXIT.
ENDIF.
REPLACE ALL OCCURENCES OF '((SYSTEM_ID))' WITH sy-sysid.
APPEND input_file_tab.
ENDDO.
CLOSE DATASET p_file.
on file there's a line with:
This email was generated on server ((SYSTEM_ID))
It will be translated to (sy-sysid = DEV):
This email was generated on server DEV
This is a "variable" like that you can use.
