Really silly question I think.

I have an applet that I am trying to add buttons to. The Applet uses Border Layout. I want to add two buttons side by side at the bottom of the frame, but whenever I say
container.add(jButton1, BorderLayout.SOUTH);
container.add(jbutton2, BorderLayout.SOUTH);
Only one of the buttons appears at the bottom. I want them both to appear, side by side, at the bottom of the screen. How do I do this?

Okay, so if I want to add two tables (1 on top of the other) to the WEST side of this layout, how should I do that? I tried adding the two tables to their own JPanel, but they get put side by side and I want them on top of each other. It's time to start doing some homework. I recommend that you go to the Sun tutorials and start reading on and experimenting with the different layouts. Look most carefully at BorderLayout, FlowLayout, BoxLayout and GridLayout. for your current purposes, one of the latter two would probably work best.
Oh, also, avoid looking at the GridBagLayout until you understand the above well.

  • Really beginner question - i think

I've had my iPhone and iTunes for ages. I have a iMac and a Macbook air. I only use my iMac for my iPhone.
My best friend just bought and iPhone, its up and running and he wants some apps. Believe it or not, he does not have a computer. So he is going to hook it up to my Mac air and get an iTunes account that way. Works for both of us because I'm eventually going to get the smaller Mac Air (mine is 1st gen) and he will get this older Mac Air.
However I'm sure I've opened the iTunes on the Mac Air before but I've never synced my phone to it. So my question is this: Will it automatically list his phone as one of mine? (we don't want that) Will it erase anything on his phone? Is there anything else I should know about doing this?
    Thanks for your help!

in that case, i would do this:
    (a) create a new user account on the MBA (might as well make it an admin user account)
    (b) while in his user account, set him up with a new iTunes store account
    (c) let him use his iTunes store account in his user account to purchase content for his iPhone to keep both your purchases strictly separate
    (d) before you give your MBA to him, you might want to delete your user account
click here and have a look @ *method one*.

  • Really silly question about Sleep

I am accustomed to my old MacBook Pro, which recently died, being put to Sleep by closing the lid.
I am accustomed to my ancient G4 iMac, where you put it to Sleep by the keyboard combination Command-Option-Eject.
I just bought a refurbished late-2012 iMac with the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Do I have to invoke Sleep by selecting in in the Apple menu, or is there a new keystroke command?
    Thanks in advance,
    --WA

You can put your Mac to sleep by two ways:
    1. Through a shortcut: hold Option, Command and Eject keys.
    2. Go to  > Sleep.
Both options will work by the same way because both do the same

  • A really easy question...I think.

    Hi everyone,
I have turned the internet inside-out looking for a simple
tutorial on this and so far I think they have all taken me kind of
a long way around. Basically what I want is text/photos/buttons/
    inside the
    box that are
"scrollable" without having to scroll left or right. My Flash
document is 800x533px. I've tried doing the whole ScrollPane thing
going through about 5 tutorials with different methods but it says
I have to do New Symbol/Movie Clip and the so-called "stage" that
you construct the movie on doesn't allow you to change dimentions
as far as I know. I can only change the dimensions of the main
Stage and the ScrollPane. I feel like this is a simple task so any
help would be greatly appreciated. I apologize if this is a stupid
    question. Thanks everyone.

  • 2 silly questions what is boot camp and do I need it? & How to transfer PC

Okay, I've just ordered my first mac it's a 17" 1.83 refurb iMac, I've noticed a lot of stuff about boot camp, what is it? Does it allow me to transfer my old pc files to my Imac? The only files I will be transfering are pictures and music files can anyone tell me how easy or hard this will be, Thanks again

    There are no silly questions.
Boot Camp (which is still a beta until Mac OS X 10.5 'Leopard' comes out) allows you to boot your Intel-based Mac in either Windows XP or Mac OS X. It will make an extra partition on your internal hard drive on which you can install WinXP SP2.
To transfer you PC files onto your Mac you will not need Boot Camp. There are several ways to do it, but perhaps the easiest is to burn you files on a CD-R or DVD-R and insert the disc into your Mac.
For your music files: start iTunes and import all music files from your CD/DVD (File menu > Import).
For your pics: start iPhoto and import all your pictures from the CD/DVD (File menu > Import in Library). iPhoto is really the best way to keep track of all your current and future pics and share them with anyone.
Good luck and welcome to the Mac world!

  • Silly Question I know but......

Silly Question I know but does anybody know how to transfer the message tone 6 acc from my N95 to my N96?

  • Silly Question I know but I'm a Newbie!

Besides Apple's own mail can the iPhone run any other email software e.g. thunderbird, etc.?
    Mark

I'm worried that when I collect emails on my iPhone she wont be able to collect those (same) emails via her powerbook (as I will already have collected them). My thought was; if I could use say Thunderbird on my iPhone and collect mail she would be able to collect the same mail via Apple's mail on her powerbook.
That's not how collecting mail works, really. The email client doesn't matter *at all*--it depends on whether the account is POP or IMAP and what settings are in use.
I have a POP account that is set up to download messages and then leave them on the server (this requires setting the POP settings in both Mail desktop and Mail iPhone that way). So all my messages get downloaded both in Mail and on my phone as new, unread, messages.
A POP account set to delete from server after downloading would cause the problem you cite. An IMAP account would download the messages everywhere, but would mark the ones you had already read as Read when your wife downloaded them, and if your wife deleted a message that wasn't for her, it would also get deleted for you.
Google POP vs IMAP for more, and see what your email provider offers, and check the settings.
Not such a silly question---it's a bit complicated.

  • ATI Radeon X1900 model designation - a silly question

    Hi all,
I guess I reserved a silly question for for my very first discussions post!
I have a Feb 2007 vintage 2.66 Mac Pro with the ATI X1900 graphics card. When I ran software update on this machine today, it ignored the ATI X1900 XT firmware update recently posted by Apple. Upon querying my card in system profiler, I see it listed as simply "ATY,RadeonX1900"–no XT at the end. Also, both the "ATY" and the lack of a space after the comma are not typos on my part-that's exactly how they appear in system profiler-weird. It listed the device ID as: 0x1002.
Is the "XT" a more recent model of the X1900 series? I queried my serial number on Apple's specification page, and it said I should have a X1900 XT, but I suspect Apple updates these on the fly.
I really want to keep my drivers and firmware up to date, but I certainly don't want try to install an incorrect firmware update-yikes. Should I trust software update or should I manually download this update from Apple's site and install it?

Thanks, guys! This is really helpful information.
I'll go back and read the posts concerning this update. Having gone through the G4 "leaf blower" fan noise ordeal, I don't want to make my blissfully quiet MacPro any louder (and neither do my office mates).
I work in 3-D modelling and architectural graphics, and I've stepped up to the big display/high end graphics card world at the same time as my applications (formZ, SketchUp, Lightwave, CS3) are rewriting their software for Intel Macs. A few minor, but annoying, issues persist, and I was naivley hoping a simple firmware update would be the silver bullet. Yeah, right.
Maybe I'm just "pre-registering" my anxiety over Leopard...
Oh well. Chin-up! And thank you all for the quick replies!

  • VirtualBox VM - silly question!

Hi gang - apologies if this is not the correct thread.
Just got my first iMac and we need to use one bit of Windows software, so I installed VirtualBox VM and installed a Windows XP Home build.
Now this might seem a silly question, but does the virtual environment need anti-virus software?
I should know the answer to this - after all I managed to set it up correctly using an ISO disk image of XP Home and added Microsoft Money 95 (yes, 95!) using a combination of ISO images, shared folders with Mac etc - so why don't I know the answer to this simple question!?
Surely my thinking is correct - that a virus couldn't possibly affect a virtual environment, or for that matter, the Mac Host!?
    Cheers

With VM, it depends on what you do in it. If you are surfing the web and responding to email in the VM Windows, then you might need Anti-Virus software installed.
However, if you are just using it to get work done on a Windows-only program, the likelihood of you getting any malware is pretty slim. If you are transferring files between it and other windows users, then you have a higher chance of getting some form of malware onto your VM.
Being that your sole purpose is managing your financial information, I would definitely not risk it and install AV on the XP VM.

  • I have just tried to connect my Mac book pro to an LG Plasma TV via an iWires Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable. All I get on my TV is the Mac wallpaper and nothing else. I am missing something really silly, could anyone help please.

Hi there. I also bought an iWires mini Display port to HDMI cable and have an LG LED/LCD TV. I plugged it in to my MB Pro and followed the very small writing that came in the package and got both audio and video going. You need to change the audio settings from within System Preferences on your Mac to select your TV as the audio output.
My concern is the data latency - do you experience a delay between moving your mouse on the MBPro and the TV displaying the movement? It is only a fraction of a second, but certainly enough to be annoying, especially in a cable as expensive as the iWire.

  • Access migration - handling really silly field and table names

    Hi All,
I'm working through migrating an ** interesting ** Access database that has been hacked together over the years by a number of ... talented amateurs.
I've noticed a difference in the way the migration wizard translates some of the really silly names it's got, between creating the table script and creating view scripts.
It seems to manage the silliness better when creating the tables, but it doesn't quite catch up when creating the views.
For example the main table in this application is called (believe it or not):
"T - This Appn Detail - MAIN TABLE"
Note that it's 33 characters long as well as including spaces and hyphens.
The table creation script creates a table called T___This Appn_Detail___MAIN_TA (which works)
But the translation of a query off this table to a view is looking for a table named T___This Appn_Detail___MAIN_TABL
Which is (a) different and (b) too long
It does a similar thing with our exciting field names. We have a field in the Access database called "Net Rate (twin share)"
The table script calls this "Net Rate _twin share_" but the view script sticks with "Net Rate (twin share)" - which causes "FROM keyword not found where expected"
Does anyone know if there's a way to nudge the view creation process in the right direction?
I guess the most sensible thing is to go into Access and correct the field names, but I don't want to spend a great deal of time updating the Access database so all the references to the fields get fixed, when I'm about to ditch it anyway.
    Thanks,
    Greg H

    Hi Greg,
The Access SQL translator should be referencing the SQL Developer Migration Workbench repository to find the correct migrated name of your tables, columns. Thereby producing PL/SQL which references the correct table name. :(
I have logged this as a bug to be fixed in our next release.
6647344: ACCESS VIEW TRANSLATION REFERENCES OLD OR INCORRECT TABLE NAMES
I can try and replicate your issues as described, but would it be possible for you to send in your access databases so we can test it here?
You may delete the data if you wish, its the schema of the database I'm interested in.
Unfortunately this is not an offer to complete the migration :)
But it would better help us understand the exact issues you are experiencing and help us better our product.
    Thanks
    Dermot.

  • Silly Questions - Upload Speed & Hardware

    Hi tere network people,
Networking ignorant here in need of your help.
I'm using a PowerMac G4 as a server and I have a PHP website going to share some pics with friends.
Some lamented it can be slow to download the pictures on their side (Most, if not all, have Broadband). The picture files are not huge, but my connection is only a residential Broadband one.
The ISP states that: "The upload speed is 256 Kilobits/Sec. Average upload rates are circa 20 Kilobytes/Sec."
    Coming to my silly questions:
    1) How much my Upload speed should be to confortably support 5-10 users at a time?
    2) Since I got a new PM G4 with a 7200 rpm HD and a Gigabit Ethernet port and a slightly faster processor, should I look at the modem/router specs? Can they affect/limit upload speed?
If anyone can give me some basic tips, I'd be grateful.
    Cheers!

    1) How much my Upload speed should be to confortably support 5-10 users at a time?
    That's easy to calculate.
Assume that your 10 users are on broadband connections with a 1mbps download speed. In order to fulfill everyone's demands at top speed you need a 1mpbs x 10, or 10mpbs upload speed.
Of course, it's unlikely that everyone will download files at the same time, and it's also unlikely that they'll sustain 100% of their rated download speed, so you can probably halve that figure without any noticeable degradation, but even 5mpbs is way higher than your current 256kbps upload link.
It's also clear that your internet connection is your bottleneck. Upgrading the server isn't going to make any difference.

You will need to do it using a third-party utility such as Phone to PC. Also, see:

  • Set Finder Layout and Size - Silly Question

Hi Guys and Happy Late Valentine's Day!
I have a really easy question regarding the size of the finder window. Every time I open a new window in the Finder, it is too small for my liking, so I have to resize it. Do you know how I can set a size for the window so that every time I open Finder, it is the size of my liking?
    ~Christoph

You are right, that is exactly what happens. Unfortunately, this is how Leopard works. I personally liked the pre-leopard versions of Finder windowing. Sizes, position and views stuck. I have actually never really used the Finder icon for opening a new window. I'm a big fan of keyboard commands. Alt-Tab to switch between applications, in Finder: Command-N for new window, Command-Shift-A for the Applications window, Command-Shift-H for your home folder etc. With keyboard shortcuts, the windowing behavior will work like you want it to.
There is no 'fix' for this, since this is how Finder is supposed to work. There might be a setting somewhere deep in the Finder application itself to change the default size. I don't know where it would be though.
Sorry, I can't help any further. Maybe someone else will post on my idea in the last paragraph.
