Rebooting MSFC on a l3 switch

If I have a 4006 with a L3 module that isn't being used yet, but the layer2 sup and ethernet blades are being used for layer2 stuff, can I reload the layer3 module without affecting the rest of the switch?

Yes you can with the "reset x" command where "x" is the module number of the L3 module.
Keep in mind that this command will also shutdown all of the ports on that module until it comes back up.

  • Scripting reboot for Cisco 300 Series switches

I would like to have some help putting together a script for rebooting our 300 series POE switches. I have about 150 at this stage to administer and it would make it much easier not to have to remotely reboot them. The IP settings will be the same for each location and we have about 2-5 in each location. I will be logging in through logmein to each remote server, and will run the scripts from this to the local switches. Any help would be appreciated.

I was playing with my Indigo on an SG-500 and it seems to work.  Create a session for each switch and in the session properties for each switch enter your crendentials (user/pass) IP/port, etc, I was using telnet, port 23 for this and then under the send command tab, on connection I entered:
    reload
    y
One command per line up to 20 commands I believe and it connected, I saw my prompts and replies and then shutting down.
So if you try this you can just go down the file tree list for switches with cameras than need a reboot and restart the entire switch if you like, quick and easy.
You could also add a folder for each switch and a session in that folder possibly for each camera/port with online port number changing for each camera in the session properties and then selectively cycle power for just the affected cameras.
    Example for port 22/camera xxxx:
    conf t
    int gi22
    power inline never
    power inline auto
It would take a fair amount of time to set up but once done you could just pick a switch folder and the port in that switch to cycle.  If you have multiple port on a switch you could use
    conf t
    int range gi22-24
    or
    int range gi1,6,16,20
    power inline never
    power inline auto
might have to verify that syntax

  • Ipod Photo/Photos disappear/are deleted on reboot

My photo library seems to disappear sometimes on reboot. Today, when I switched on my ipod after not using it for a couple of days, I got the apple logo etc, but when I was back into the menus, my photos were gone. This has happened occasionally over the past few weeks (I only got the ipod in August). Is this normal? I can't believe it is! I've used up my one support call already so I can't ask Apple. If I manually reboot the ipod, sometimes I lose the photos, sometimes I don't. Anyone out there have the same problem? Anyone know what to do about it??? Ta! Sue

    Hi Dave
Thanks for your comments. I get the photos back the minute I connect to itunes and the ipod updates automatically. Is a reset the same as reboot? The ipod software is up to date and I'm using 4.7 itunes - someone told me the only difference between that and 4.9 is podcasting. And anyway, there seems to be no problem syncing between the two. It's just the ipod that seems to be doing something odd all on its own! I'm reluctant to do a restore, as I have notes on the ipod that I'd have to copy again, tho' all the music is on hard drive. Do you really think that would help - the ipod is only about a month old and I did a restore initially to format the ipod hard drive for windows xp. Incidentally, the same thing happened on my first one, which I took back to the shop after a couple of weeks, because the display was scratched up when I got it, so this is a new replacement. Any further feedback would be very welcome - but thanks for the first reply. Sue.

  • K430/K450: here`s the SOLUTION to Lenovo Power control switch not working anymore.

If your power control switch isn`t working anymore BUT you didn`t unistall it or erase some of his files, chances are that over time some software/update took control of some setting used by the Lenovo switch.
If this is the case, before reinstalling the software, try the following:
1 - Check your power plan option, if is on something else than Lenovo  change your power plan option (scheme) to Lenovo Power Scheme.
2 - Access your pc advanced startup setting (win+x) check for the services LitModeCtrl and LenovoComService and set the two services to automatically start when the computer startsup. If it`s not working 99% is because some software (the most common is Samsung SSD Magician) has set the two to "Manual". Change to "Auto".
3 - Reboot and the Power control switch software will be working again.
I wonder why no one from Lenovo advice this, but i`ve had to find a solution myself after countless hit & miss attempts.

  • Understanding Concept of Supervisor and MSFC on Cisco siwtches

    Hi
I have never worked extensively on Cisco switches. Can anyone explain me concept/features of Supervisor and MSFC. What are the types of IOS's run on these?
Is there any good link we can refer for more understanding.

    Hi Darpan,
Supervisor is a switching engine and MSFC is a routing daughter card which sits on the supervisor.
Supervisor in cat6k alone is just a layer 2 switch but together with MSFC it performs like a router also.
Supervisor you can image as a layer 2 switch which stores cam entry like other layer 2 switch and perform all layer 2 functions. MSFC is a daughter card which supports all layer 3 routing like intervlan routing , routing with implementation of routing protocol like eigrp , ospf etc etc.
NOW cat6k can run in 2 modes
    1) Hybrid Mode
    2) Native Mode
    1) Hybrid Mode : When cat6k is in Hybrid mode it has 2 different main images. One for supervisor which is a CATOS and one for MSFC which is IOS. To configre sup and msfc you have to switch between sup and msfc. To configure sup you have only set base command options and for msfc it is like regular router IOS
    2) In native mode there is a single main image which is loaded on supervisor bootflash and msfc bootpath is to boot from bootflsh of msfc. In this case there is only a single imterface where you configure sup as well as msfc also.
Have a look at this link

  • Ntpdate and ntpd not setting time when rebooting from BootCamp/Windows

I've got a farily consistent repro here, where my kids will reboot using BootCamp to play a game in Vista, and when they reboot back to Mac OS X, the time is set to UTC instead of adjusted for PDT.
    I noticed in the system.log:
    Oct 17 15:37:46 iMac ntpdate[114]: can't find host time.apple.com\n
Oct 17 15:37:46 iMac ntpdate[114]: no servers can be used, exiting
    Oct 17 15:37:46 iMac ntpd[140]: bind() fd 10, family 30, port 123, addr fe80:4::21b:63ff:fe97:514e, in6is_addrmulticast=0 flags=0 fails: Can't assign requested address
    I've already tried the fix at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303731 but it didn't seem to help;
I'm wondering if the network isn't fully operational yet (I'm connected 100BaseT to an always on cable modem, but hey, even that can take a couple of seconds) and that may be causing the issue...
Help is appreciated. Of course, I'm planning on switching to Leopard when I can, but for now this is just plain annoying.

That sort of showed me that the problem is that ntpd is running but it isn't connecting:
    xxx $ /usr/bin/ntpq -c peers
    No association ID's returned
    xxx $
If I kill the ntpd's that are running and start them manually, I get:
    ntpq> peers
remote refid st t when poll reach delay offset jitter
    ==============================================================================
    time0.apple.com 17.72.133.55 2 u 10 68m 1 32.977 3.652 0.001
    ntpq> q
Clearly I'm successful in connecting at least once, so how is this not working right after a boot when I've used BootCamp? If I just reboot the mac without having switched to BootCamp, I don't recall seeing this issue...

  • Solaris 11.1 console layout switch in VirtualBox

I have Win7pro x64 as a VirtualBox host system and Solaris 11.1 as guest.
Solaris was installed in text mode, with default language and keymap settings (English).
Then I have changed locale settings:
    pkg change-facet facet.locale.ru_RU=True
    svccfg -s svc:/system/environment:init \
    setprop environment/LANG = astring: ru_RU.UTF-8
    svcadm refresh svc:/system/environment
    and layout settings:
    svccfg -s keymap:default setprop keymap/layout = Russian
    svcadm refresh keymap
    svcadm restart keymap
    also I have tried:
    kbd -s with selecting Russian
    loadkeys
But after system reboot I still can't switch keyboard layout (US always).
I have tried all combinations of ctrl, shift, alt (and also "win key" and "menu").
This is when virtual machine have no GUI installed.
After installing GUI I have a login request window with RU layout and I can not switch to US layout to enter login name.
So I had to switch back keymap settings to enter the system:
    svccfg -s keymap:default setprop keymap/layout = US-English
    What am I doing wrong?
And whats the difference between "setprop keymap/layout" and "kbd -s"?
P.S. yes, I can use ssh for working with server. And now I am using it. But I have already spend enough time for working with this issue. Thats why I want to know the right answer.
    Thanks!
    Edited by: user13068010 on 29.05.2013 0:27

You are not doing anything wrong...
You've correctly set Russian facet (ru_RU), then you've correctly set the default system locale in LANG to ru_RU.UTF-8 locale and then you've correctly set the Russian keyboard layout for the console by modifying the keymap property with the correct value and refreshes/restarted it. (There is one more step you did not do: to run kbd -i so that the keymap kernel module will be loaded... it is a bug that was fixed in S11.2)
Unfortunately S11.1 does not have support for Russian Keyboard Layout in the Console, and so in the Console you are not able to input Russian characters even if all settings are correctly set, the input will fallback to the default input: US-English.
When you install GUI (I guess GNOME) then you are able to input Russian characters.
" And whats the difference between "setprop keymap/layout" and "kbd -s"? "
The SMF Property svc:/system/keymap:default is the one that stores the value of keymap/layout... and so what kbd -s <layout> does is: set keymap/layout value (<layout>) in Property svc:/system/keymap:default and then it refreshes and restarts the property . Additionally since S11.2 it also runs kbd -i and loadkeys commands.

  • K7T Turbo2 keeps switching DMA to PIO

OK, I have a K7T Turbo2, and its pretty stable but I have a big problem. Every couple of days (Actually it happened 3 times today for some reason), it switches my Secondary IDE channel from DMA to PIO Mode 4. When I try to install games under PIO mode, the installer freezes randomly and my system becomes unstable. Also when I try to burn CDRs and DVDRs, my system gets slow and unstable under PIO mode, but it works perfectly under DMA mode. I have to uninstall the secondary ide channel and reboot to get it to switch to DMA, and its a major pain in the butt. Please can someone help me with this, its starting to drive me crazy.

  • Forgets time, loses WEP key on reboot?

I've upgraded my wife's mini a couple of times without issue. Put in 2GB RAM when I bought it, and a larger hard drive (came with 80GB) a long while ago. Let me qualify, I am pretty experienced working on all types of systems, aware of static discharge issues, etc. I build most of my own intel systems, as well as systems for friends, have over 20 years of system maintenance experience, etc..
Since the last change (switched to a larger, faster hard drive - Fujitsu 320GB 7200RPM) the system has been "unstable" (for want of a better term) at boot. If it boots up, the date/time is often incorrect (Jan 2001) and it has "forgotten" the WEP key. Everything else is normal, and once I enter the WEP key again, the system runs fine. Disk utility shows no issues. The system can run for days without issue - there is no stability problem once it s booted up.
Many times, however, it simply will not boot - I get the "no entry" symbol (no boot device found).
I have reset PVRam, booted to 10.6 install DVD and run disk utility, everything always checks out OK. Most importantly, it shows the HD is bootable, and the verify options show no issues.
What could be the problem? I'm thinking I should just change out the lithium RAM backup battery to see if that helps? I don't understand why it forgets the WEP key, however - unless that is written to RAM as well, so that it can connect to the wireless network at boot. If so, then that's obviously the issue..
    ..a

The security level has nothing to do with the fact that the system "forgets" the key on reboot. I can't switch to WPA as the AP is accessed by several wireless video cameras that only support WEP. We live on 14 acres, I'm not too concerned with drive-by war dialing..
This system has also an annoying habit of forgetting her email passwords every now and then.
I've pulled the HD and installed snow leopard on a spare drive, and everything seems fine after several days, so I'm started to suspect OS corruption..

  • Behavior / Impact Upgrading N5K to FEX (reboot?)

    Good Day
I am wondering how the behavior is if upgrading Nexus 5500 with connected FEX.
    The setup is:
    2 Nexus 5596  (vpc roles primary/secondary)
Many FEX 2248 / 2232 connected to the 5596. Every FEX with one link to the primary and one link to the secondary.
    - Is it fact that after I will do a SW Upgrade on 5596 all the FEX will reboot after receiving the new image ?
    - Will this occur a second time after SW upgrading the 2nd 5596 ?
    - What's the behavior if the 2 5596 do not run same version (while upgrading it will be so for a moment, maybe this could stay a longer time) ?
If 1) is true, so all the redundant design is useless while upgrading...
    Thanks for answer

The upgrade behavior for dual homed FEX is described in the upgrade guide below.  If you follow the process in the guide the FEX will be rebooted once, after the primary switch is successfully upgraded.  You initiate the FEX reboot when you are ready.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/datacenter/nexus5000/sw/upgrade/521_N1_1/n5k_upgrade_downgrade_521.html#wp641802
Depending on your topology and your current version you may be able to do an ISSU rather than the disruptive upgrade, the prerequisites are listed in the document.  You can also test whether you can do an ISSU with the "show install all impact" command.  The command will tell you what the impact of your upgrade will be before you do it, and will verify what components need to be upgraded.
As to your third question, yes the two switches can run a different NX-OS during the upgrade.  But you should always review the release notes for your new version just to double check compatibility between your specific releases.
