Rebuilding 1 TB RAID 1 -- 23 More Days?!?

I have two 1 TB drives connected to my iMac (10.6.5) via USB and combined in a 1 TB RAID1. A while back I had to physically move a few things and it was too late when I realized one drive had come disconnected. I tried to use Disk Utility to re-attach it to the RAID, but it had been marked as no good and I could not connect it. I finally had to go through several steps to remove it from the RAID, reformat it, and re-attach it to the RAID.
Then Disk Utility started rebuilding my RAID. That was before Christmas (note the date is now after New Year's). Disk Utility will crash anywhere from 1-4 times a day and when I restart it, I always get a different length of time for how much longer a rebuild will take.
Currently it's not quite 1/2 done and tells me it'll take 23 days and 13 hours to finish rebuilding the RAID.
I seriously was thinking of just wiping the disks, deleting the RAID, and copying everything back onto it, but that means that for the better part of a day I get a bottleneck on my LAN while all the files are copied back to the RAID. That either messes up whatever I'm working on when I need to use the LAN, or it effects Netflix and Instant Watch because of the LAN traffic.
Early in the process, I'd get messages telling me it'd take 35 or 40 or more days to rebuild the RAID.
So why does it take so long, when copying the files, over a 10/100 LAN would take less than 24 hours? Is there a better way to do this?
Thanks for any insight into this weirdness.

It's about halfway done and I'm going to let it rebuild, even with the long delay for a couple reasons: 1) It's easier than having to re-rsync all the data from every computer on my LAN and deal with congestion, and 2) I'm curious to see just how long it'll take.
I wish I had logged when it started, but I know it was right around Christmas.
What I find interesting is that Disk Utilities freezes a lot of the time, or it crashes sometimes. There are days when I see a LOT of progress and think, "If it kept going at that rate, it could have done the whole thing in 2-3 days." Then there are times when I watch and the status bar doesn't change, making me wonder if the process is stuck.
For example, last night, I checked where the status bar was and went to bed. Over 8 hours later I check and it hasn't moved at all. So I quit Disk Utilities and restart and in under 90 minutes there's a measurable change in the status bar.

  • CANT CHOOSE TRIAL CONTINUE WHILE I HAD 28 MORE DAYS! WTH?!

I smoothly downloaded, installed, and runned without ANY problems. I could use it 2 times. The next day i tried to install, and I needed to enter a serial while I had 28 more days. Its the same window when u start up AE cs3, and clicking on ''Continue Trial Version''. When i start up now, that windows pops up, and I only can enter my serial, and I cant choose the continue trial option. Wtf???

Check whether you ran any other Adobe as trials in the past or participate(d) on any of the public Betas. The licensing system is rather picky about such matters and may mistake an old activation/ timestamp file that you never removed for a full product that has not been serialized correctly. In either case, the only ones that can help you is phone support by providing you with a proper timestamped serial for the rest of your trial period. Just explain the situation and provide as much info as you can give.

  • Last month my data cycle was from the 12th to the 12th. Now for the end of this month its til the 20th. Why are there more days between when my data cycle refreshes from last month?

I guess I said everything in the topic...anyways, from March 12 to April 12 was the data cycle. After April 12 it shot up to May 20th! That's a whole extra week of data that is definitely going to be over because there are more days use data? Why?

We share 4gb for our plan. It works out perfectly usually. But this month says the new data cycle doesn't start til the 20th. We've already gone over a gig easily in this extra week. My billing cycle is always set at the 15th of every month and that has not been a problem...until we go over in data and get charged more money. Is the data cycle going to fluctuate every month?
Your billing cycle and your "data cycle" are the same, and that cycle doesn't change, unless you request it or maybe if you bundle services or something.  For example, my bill cycle runs from the 18th of one month through the 17th of the next.  My due date sometimes varies a few days, not really sure why, probably because not all months have the same number of days. If you look at the breakdown by line on your bill, you will see these dates.  What you are describing sounds like the due date is different than usual. All lines on the same account have the same billing cycle for all services...calling/texting plan, data plan, insurance, etc.
I am a little confused, though, because you stated your "data cycle" is always the 12th through the 12th (it would actually be the 13th through the 12th), then you say the bill cycle is always set for the 15th, and then you say the data cycle is pushed to the 20th this month.  What is the billing cycle for the voice/text plan? What date did the bill print (this should be on the first page)? Finally, what is the due date on the most recent bill?  Bill cycle and due dates are not the same.

  • Stuck on build 9841, for a while :/, only have 10 more days PLEASE HELP

I got Windows 10 a while ago, but I got distracted and forgot about it for a while, and I have tried to update it from build 9841 it just wouldn't do it. I tried the fbl_release already and it didn't work. PLEASE HELP ONLY 10 MORE DAYS!!
    Thanks!
    ~Z

    What  fbl_release ?
Have you tried downloading build 10041 ISO and use it to install ?
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/preview-iso-update-1503
If you did download the 10041 ISO, what method did you use to install ?
In case you don't know, your have 2 options :
    1. Burn the ISO to a bootable DVD or an USB with at least 4 GB capacity, and then use it to do a clean install.
    2. Just go to the folder where the downloaded ISO is kept > right click at it > click Mount > click Setup.exe.
The system will start installing and you can keep your personal files and settings. You might have to reinstall the 3rd party programs.
*****  After you have build 10041 installed, go to Settings > Update & Recovery > right side, click Advanced options > under Choose how preview builds are installed, change from Fast to Slow.
Why change to Slow ring ?
Microsoft is trying to fix the slow install of the current build 10049. They are unable to find a solution.
Stay in Slow ring until MS can figure out how to fix that.

  • Re: Unable to rebuild in mirrored RAID after hard drive failure BOOTCAMP

    CHRIIIIIIIS!!!
    Problem!
first off, you're a genius. thanks for helping everyone around here.
    Second.
I just installed Mavericks on my MacBook Pro 2012, and it broke Bootcamp.
I have a 750GB hard drive and it has 2 partitions, on for Mac and one for BootCamp, nice and simple.
When I open Disk Utility I get this....
It really broke the partition, it used to be named "BOOTCAMP"
Any help would be appreciated and yes i know how to use terminal, if that helps you.
    Frank

Awesome, this just saved my sanity, thank you!
I was about to go totally insane when I couldn't find the option to add a new drive to the existing RAID mirror and then rebuild the whole thing.
In the Apple help, it just says "go to RAID" "click rebuild" - but this is absolutely not how it works!
Adding the new, empty drive by drag and drop wasn't mentioned anywhere - in addition to that I have never seen a program that has certain functions which can only be accessed by drag and drop.
Also the hard disk utility doesn't look like drag and drop GUI at all.
It was really easy as soon as I read this thread, so thanks again, this totally saved my day!

  • Unable to rebuild in mirrored RAID after hard drive failure

I plan on getting a mirrored raid setup for my backups of all my work that I have done. I am currently testing out how the built in software RAID works in OSX.
I have setup a mirrored RAID with two flash drives and it works fine, i then tried to simulate if one of the disks were to fail by reformatting it, and then i tried to plug it back in to rebuild it, but it does not allow me to do so the rebuild button is greyed out. Could it be because i had the RAID setup as automatically rebuild? If someone could walk me through the process of rebuilding the raid setup that would be great, i would like to figure this out before purchasing the harddrives.

Awesome, this just saved my sanity, thank you!

  • Technician never showed up, never called & now can't come out for 3 more days???

Yesterday afternoon I lost my TV, phone and internet service (X1 Platform). There were no outages in the area so customer service was called. After spending 45 minutes on the phone going through all the troubleshooting, the rep said a tech would have to come out. She said they could come out the next day, gave us our choice of times and we picked 8:30am-12:30pm. She said the tech would call 30 minutes before he showed up. Today the tech never calls, never shows and my husband stayed home all morning for this. He called customer service and they told him we didn't have an appointment scheduled. I called and was told the same thing and then the rep said in order to make another appointment we would have to do the troubleshooting again. I told her there was no way that was happening. She said she could see that troubleshooting had already been done, but for some reason the last rep never made an appointment for the tech to come out. I asked her if that made any sense at all, that they would just leave the issue unresolved like that. Magically, she suddenly found where the last rep had requested that a truck come out, but she still couldn't find the date and time. Then she tried to find the tech, but she couldn't - apparently he disappeared into a black hole. The rep then tells me I have to set up a new appointment (which she can now suddenly do without troubleshooting) and the earliest available is Sunday from 5-7.  Are you kidding me??? Because either customer service at Comcast or the tech screwed up, my time without service went from 1 day to 4 days??? She said she would make the appointment and then transfer me to a supervisor because only a supervisor is able to change the appointment date. At this point, I've been on the phone for 45 minutes and then I spent an additional 15 minutes waiting for a supervisor. The rep did come back every few minutes and tell me that the line was still busy and she hadn't forgotten about me...until the point where she disconnected me. I know very well that she had my phone number to call back because it's on my account.  Did she? No. So, I called back again. Explained the entire situation to a different rep. She said that a supervisor can't change the appointment time - only a dispatcher can. She took my husband's number and said that a dispatcher would call if a time becomes available for a tech to come out. If none becomes available, we're out of luck until Sunday night. I asked to talk to a supervisor. She had the nerve to ask why. She transferred me to someone who, of course, didn't answer the phone and I got to leave a voice message. That person (whoever it was) hasn't called me back. I don't think it's too much to ask that, when the mistake is Comcast's, you do whatever you can to make it right. It's not as if the tech showed up and nobody was home. My husband sat there for 4 hours waiting. We have also spent a good portion of our day on the phone trying to get someone to come out today or tomorrow at the latest. If I switched to a different company, they would be able to come out before Sunday to install new service, but you can't be bothered to make things right for an existing customer when you screw up.

Fun update (no, not really). Called back numerous times since my last post with no luck. I'm pretty sure I've talked to every department conceivable at least once to try to get someone at Comcast to live up to the term "customer service" and get someone out to my house ASAP since they were a no-show today. One of the more entertaining conversations was with a supposed supervisor who informed me that she looked at my account and could see where I talked to a rep yesterday about my phone service being out and they had me check for a dial tone. I told her that absolutely never happened - we only tried troubleshooting the error code on the TV. This model employee proceeded to argue with me and kept repeating that we had checked for a dial tone. She refused to stop talking when I tried to correct her and proceeded to talk non-stop for a full minute before I pretty much screamed into the phone that, while we have the phone service, we don't use it, and we don't even have a phone hooked up in the house, so how in the world could we possibly have checked for a dial tone??? If someone isn't out tomorrow to fix this, I'm switching to U-verse. Nobody should be have to deal with customer service that doesn't care about the customer and can't admit to or fix their mistakes.

  • Rebuilding a software RAID mirror

It seems the 10.5 diskutil commands relating to adding a disk to a RAID set and rebuilding the mirror has changed.
In the past one could use:
    *sudo diskutil repairmirror disk2 disk1*
This adds disk1 to the raid set disk2 but doesn't start rebuilding.
The new disk is labeled as a 'Online (Spare)'.
It seems now to rebuild the mirror one now needs to use (after using removefromraid ):
*sudo diskutil addtoraid member disk1 disk2*
This commences rebuilding. It is shown as "0% (Rebuilding)" in diskutil checkRAID.
I also had problems using addtoraid or repairmirror if the disk had any partitioning
(the error related to inability to resize). Using disk utility to delete the partition information
allowed both commands to work. This may all be related to the old style Apple Partition Map
(required for G5s) rather than the GUID partition map.

The update takes close to 1 GB, so if your HD space is tight, you have to fix that first before updating.

  • Rebuilding a Mirrored Raid using Disk Utility

I have a mirrored raid set up via disk utility. For some reason one drive was switched off recently so the 2 drives are now out of sync. Disk utility now says the raid is 'Degraded' with one of the slices marked as 'failed'
I can ignore this as the drive appears fine on the desktop. But I need it to be working correctly as a fully operating RAID.
If I click 'rebuild' it gives a warning saying 'Rebuilding a RAID set will destroy all information on the replacement disk “RAID Slice”.
SO- I'm assuming rebuild will correct the error and make it work but I'm concerned about this warning about destroying data! I assume it will simply copy everything from Drive A to the 'degraded' Drive B??
    Thanks for any suggestions.

"SO- I'm assuming rebuild will correct the error and make it work but I'm concerned about this warning about destroying data! I assume it will simply copy everything from Drive A to the 'degraded' Drive B??"
This should indeed be the way it goes but since i do not have enough experience with that kind or RAID setup i strongly suggest backing up / cloning drive A to an external before doing the rebuild... just in case.

  • K8N Neo 2F - Rebuilding WinXP with Raid and partitions

    Hey;
I am having to rebuild this machine. I have 2X250GB (X 4 partitions) raided already, but need to reload windows. When I use the floppy disk F6 function for the SATA raid drivers, will I loose info on other partitions?
Also, there are two versions of the floppy disk raid driver files for this board. One old (the one I have installed now, I think), and one newer. Do I need to use the original drivers, or can I also upgrade the drivers at the same time as well. (And NOT loose info on other partitions?)
    Thanks for your expert opinions

Nop, you will not loose them. Do install(or re-format 1st) in your primary boot partition from XP installation, your others partitions will be intact.

  • Verizon Crew Causes Outage But No One Can Arrive to Fix for 2 more Days! UNACCEPTABLE

I have tried every other method of contacting Verizon and keep getting nothing but excuses. This morning a crew from Verizon knocked on our door to access our backyard in order to finally take down an old unused pole that has been there for months. We of course let them back there although we hadn't called yet to complain about someone taking down the pole bc we are not the type to complain. For months Phone, Internet and TV were all working fine, no issues, and were fine this morning as well... that is until the crew working on the pole finished what they were doing, and right when they were finishing up their work everything went down, Phone, Internet and TV. We called and did a live chat complaint immediately bc we figured since Verizon had literally just caused the problem they could come fix it. WRONG, they tell us 2 days before a tech can come to FIX VERIZON'S OWN MISTAKE!!!! So a Verizon crew has the time to come ruin our service but after being on hold and talking to someone on live chat we are told they are too busy to get back.
I have a 3 year old, a 1 month old and my Husband is an attorney that often needs to work from home at night and file time sensitive documents with the Courts and this is unacceptable. Tonight he had to go to a family members house to file documents due by midnight tonight and that is where I am able to send this message from now. We would not complain if it was weather related or something out of Verizon's control bc things happen...but this was literally caused by a Verizon work crew in a Verizon truck and now the only answer we get is wait 2 days. UNACCEPTABLE. Due to this action we went from customers who never complain to posting on this just to get some relief and an acceptable answer.
