Recently auto updated to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 but mail no longer works. Had my Mac in at the iStore for 3 hours to no avail. Someone out there must have a fix! Help!!!

Just had an automatic update to 10.6.8 last week and then my mail app failed to work after that. Had my Mac in at the iStore in Cape Town for 3 hours and received it back with the same problem. Please advise if there is a fix for this or how I should go about sourting out the problem. Thanks in advance.

Mac OS X v10.6: Mail.app won’t open, or "You can't use this version of Mail…" alert after installing Security Update 2012-004:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4424?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Fellow user Grant Bennet-Alder offers this solution:
Some users have reported this problem if the Mail Application has been moved out of the top-level /Applications folder, or duplicated in another location.
When the Security Update is done, the old version of Mail is disabled.
The solution has been to:
1) make certain Mail is in the /Applications folder
2) There is no other copy anywhere else.
3) Once steps 1 and 2 have been done, Manually download and re-apply the Security Update (2012-004) by hand.
Security Update 2012-004 (Snow Leopard)
If the Mail.app has been LOST, it can be re-installed by applying the 10.6.8 version 1.1 combo update. But this update is quite large and it is usually not necessary:

  • Someone out there must be able to help me.

I am a spec ed teacher who does a lot of evals and IEP writing on my own time from home. My school uses a program called skyward. Since upgrading to leopard I can no longer log into school and work from home. The tech support (pc users) do not understand mac products and have tried to help but can't seem to be able to help me. They think safari might be the problem and have suggested using a different browser such as firefox. I tried it and still can't log on. Apple support says they can't help me and that it is a school problem call them. NO ONE WILL HELP ME!!!!! What should I do??? Who can I get in contact with? Can anyone please help me???

Do you know how to enable the Debug Menu so you can change the User Agent so as to tell the web site that you are using web browser B instead of A?
Does it require plug-in like Flash or javascript. There is a new version of flash though it doesn't solve everyone's problems.
You tried Firefox (2.0.0.11, there is 3.0 beta also). OmniWeb is what I use, and easy to configure. There is also Opera and Camino.
When "upgrading" to Leopard or a new version of any browser, it helps to clear out the cache files and folders and prefs from the old version first.
    /Users/account/Library/Caches/
Where you will find "Safari" and "Metadata" folders that are just temp files.
    These should help:

Install Tiger on an external drive and use that temporarily. You could even install Windows on your Mac via Parallels or Code Weaver for just this and use Microsoft Internet Explorer.

I tried mackeeper to recover files but it could not. Any other way any one has tried to recover a system library folder after OS upgrade?

No, it doesn't store a clone. You would have needed to make one with either SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner.
If the files were in your ~/Library folder then they may still be there. As I said, you can access it by
going to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library". I wouldn't think an upgrade would overwrite anything in ~/Library.
If you have a Time Machine backup you may also be able to use that to retrieve them.

the mute button is a switch you need to flip, not touch. if you look at it and see color, its on.

  • Recent firmware update prevents Snow Leopard downgrade?

I need Snow Leopard for my work, and will continue to need it for at least a year. Apple online chat was unable to confirm whether refurbs currently in the pipe would ship with SL or Lion, regardless of age. They basically indicated that my chances were about 50/50.
After reading user accounts of how to downgrade from Lion to Snow Leopard, I went ahead and purchased a refurb February 2011 15" 2.2GHz MacBook Pro from the Apple store. Sure enough, when the machine arrived, it was loaded with Lion.
I ran Software Update to make the OS current, backed it up via Time Machine, and then proceeded with the re-format/SL installation process. However, Snow Leopard would not install using any of the commonly described methods, and the symptoms were consistent with trying to load it onto a post-July 2011 machine.
After a couple of tries, I got a 'phone support agent on the line, who advised that when I ran Software Update, it loaded a recent firmware update that locks the machine down. He was evasive at first, but eventually confirmed that the machine was downgradeable when I received it, but was now effectively a Post-Lion machine, and could no longer be returned to it's as-shipped condition. He indicated that my only option was to return the machine for a refund.
I have a local independent repair facility looking into the situation at the moment, but they are pessimistic.
I was unable to find out when Apple first issued the new firmware load via Software Update, but I understand that people were still successfully downgrading to Snow Leopard as recently as December, 2011.
Assuming that the information I received from Apple is correct, they have closed the door on further Snow Leopard downgrades, at least on the MacBook Pro. Can anyone confirm if this is the case?

Apple is getting a lot of calls from people wanting to downgrade to Snow Leopard for several reasons, like that Lion is terrible and/or they need to run software that hasn't been updated or is avaialble on Lion.
Firmware updates apply to the machine itself, so it if's running Snow Leopard it gets the same firmware updates as a Lion machine.
I'm not ruling out the possibility that a change is preventing you from installing Snow Leopard on a compatible machine, however like to explore the possibility that you've used the wrong disk to do so.
You can't use the 10.6.3 white disk to install Snow Leopard. Early 2011 machines that came with Snow Leopard came with their own disks and hardware drivers that are not present on the 10.6.3 white disks.
Since your Mac is Snow Leopard capable, try calling Apple again and just say you need replacement Snow Leopard disks for your Early 2011 Mac.
If that isn't a option, you migh want to explore the "Procedure" of combining 10.6.3 with the 10.6.8 Combo Update, which when burned to disk, produces a bootable disk to install 10.6
Explore the links and info on this old thread written for the Early 2011-Mid 2011 period
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3264421?start=0&tstart=0
Another option is to get into contact with another Mac user who bought a Early 2011 Snow Leopard Mac of your exact make and model, get a copy of their disk.

  • Updated to Snow Leopard 10.6.7, now wireless won't work?

Today I installed the new Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.7 on my MacBook Pro, and now I cannot connect to wireless networks.  I've searched everywhere for answers all night to no avail.  Other macbooks and pc's can connect to the network just fine, so it's definitely the software.
When I open the network settings, the Airport appears in yellow instead of green and says "AirPort has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.26.111 and will not be able to connect to the internet".
I've tried turning the airport on and off, I've tried rebooting the router, rebooting the computer, rebooting the computer in safe mode, moving the System Configuration folder onto my desktop.  Nothing that I found anywhere on this forum has worked.
Now I understand that self assigned IP addresses starting with 169 will not be able to connect to the internet.  My question is what in the world can I do to get an IP address that will allow me to connect to the internet?

Hi! I have the same issue but mine doesn't  assign any ip address, just blank.  I have a brand new macbook.

  • I'm a novice's novice.  Installed Snow Leopard 10.6.3 but doesn't show in About this Mac

I installed Mac OS X Snow Leopard, a disk we bought online, twice, yet whne I put down "About this Mac" it reveals only Version 10.5.8, which does not suppport our new camera.
I don't know how to ask questions.  I am such a novice.  Help!  Thanks, a little ol lady in central Tucson.

Did you acquire the Snow Leopard disk directly from Apple for US$20?   (Or was this DVD installer disk acquired from somewhere else?)
If this is a Snow Leopard DVD, then when you insert the DVD disk into the optical drive, you should get the option to upgrade to 10.6, and — once you start that installation — OS X should ask a few questions and then "go away" for an hour or so, doing the software installation.
if you've gone through that sequence, then it would appear that whatever disk you're installing is not 10.6 Snow Leopard, but rather contains 10.5 Leopard.  Check with whomever sold you the disk, as a starting point.

  • Snow Leopard install: now MobileMe and Hotmail no longer working

    Hi everyone,
I'm having issues emailing since upgrading to Snow Leopard last friday.
I have 5 different email addresses, of which two are still working and three stopped working in Mail:
    * MobileMe account (stopped working)
    * 2 Hotmail accounts (stopped working)
    * Gmail account (still working)
    * XS4ALL webmail account (still working)
I've chatted with MobileMe support for quite some time and have tried the following, all to no avail:
    * taking the accounts offline/online manually
    * deleting the accounts from Mail and add new ones (with and without using SSL)
    * using LAN instead of wifi
    * using a few of my neighbors' unsecured wifi connections
    * changing ports
    * repairing disk permissions
    * creating new user account on MBP and then create mail account
    * the support agent even created a new MobileMe account
    * installing mozilla thunderbird
Basically, when i try to send emails from my MobileMe account or my hotmail accounts, OR when setting up a new account (either using Mail or Thunderbird), i get the message:
"cannot send message using the server [email protected]". If i continue the set up it says it was unable to connect to the smtp server.
Furthermore, something struck me after having deleted my MobileMe account and my two hotmail accounts from Mail. When i quit and relaunched Mail, an email that was in my outbox popped up saying it could not be sent because it couldn't connect to the smtp server, and asked me to manually select another server from a list. In that list the MobileMe account and the two hotmail accounts were still there! After having deleted them..
After all this, MobileMe support thought it was a Mail issue and said i would need to contact the OS X Mail support team. Haven't gotten around to that yet. However, since i get the exact problem in Thunderbird as in Mail, happening right after upgrading to SnowLeopard, I'm kinda thinking it's the OS itself.
Anyone any suggestions? I hope to not have to spend another evening w/ Apple support (however friendly they always are).
    Thanks!
    Tjade

I cannot set up my hotmail account. Keeps giving me this error:
"The Hotmail POP server “pop3.live.com” is not responding. Try checking the network connection, and that the server name is correct. Otherwise, the server might be temporarily unavailable. If you continue, you might not be able to receive messages.
Can't say it worked or not before the upgrade to Snow Leopard cause I didn't try to set it up prior.

  • CS4, Adobe Updater, and Snow Leopard

Hello, all.  I have installed my copy of CS4 onto a fresh install of Snow Leopard.  The adobe updater does not recognize any new updates.  I did, however, go to the updates section and download the newest version of camera raw and CS4 11.0.1.
Has anyone else been able to update CS4?  Any suggestions?  If I recall, I believe there were Bridge updates, etc, since the original release of CS4.  I have the original DMG of CS4 for Photoshop, without the patches.
    Thanks,

I am also in the camp of not receiving new updates from Adobe Updater in Snow Leopard.  I did a fresh install as was mentioned earlier as well (erase the disk, install Snow Leopard, followed by Software Update to get 10.6.1 and then installed CS4).  Adobe Updater didn't find any updates... Then I installed most (if not all by hand) and then Camera Raw 5.5 came out and I still didn't see any updates.  I did end up installing that one by hand as well, but before I did that I lookad at the aum.log file and saw these messages around the Camera Raw queries...
2009-09-21T04:08:50: GetAppIDUpdates: getting available update info for AppID: cameraraw5
    2009-09-21T04:08:50: Could not find AMT folder at: = /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Camera Raw 5/Contents/Resources
    2009-09-21T04:08:51: Could not find AMT folder at: = /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Camera Raw 5/Contents/Resources
2009-09-21T04:08:51: GetAppIDUpdates: getting .upd file: http://swupmf.adobe.com/manifest/60/mac/cameraraw5.upd
    2009-09-21T04:08:51: GetAppIDUpdates: MFS_New - parsing new .upd file = 1
But then again I see those same messages in my 10.5.7 system that works fine... So it doesn't look like it logs anything to explain why its not finding any updates.
I may try uninstalling and reinstalling just to see if that helps... Would be nice to get a resolution to this.

After updating to snow leopard and trying to delete mackeeper, Flash player is being blocked and will not allow me to view utubes. Can anyone help?

Here are instructions for eradicating MacKeeper - you may need to re-install it to uninstall it fully:

Regarding Flash - there are many reports on here that v13.x isn't working for a lot of people. distractme in the following thread posted instructions on how to install the previous version, which should work whilst Adobe work on a fix:

  • My iomega stopped backing up files. This happened around the time I updated to Snow Leopard. Any fixes?

My iomega stopped backing up files around the time I updated tp Snow Leopard. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Aside from hitting it with a baseball bat I would really like to find a solution. My time machine just says no disk detected. Help?
    Severly tech disoriented

If the light will not turn on the TC is dead. No matter that the hard disk is running.. it should only run at start up or when it is accessed not constantly.. that means the board in the TC has failed. Apple do not repair them.. They will replace it under warranty or applecare.
If you have gone over the 12month warranty it will still be covered if you have applecare on any computer or an Apple TV. In fact the cost of the apple TV plus apple care is still cheaper than buying a new TC.. so it is a route some people are taking.. certainly depends.. in some places like Europe or Australia now, there is a recognition that statutory warranty must be longer on a product that is premium to the market. 12months is not good enough. Apple will sometimes listen.
They might be fixable but I do not know how.

  • Updated to Snow Leopard and now my picture looks bad on my HD TV... help?

    Hey guys and gals.
So I have a MBP 1.3ghz 15" 4 gb RAM and running Snow Leopard.
I have always used my DVI to Composite/S-Video adapter to watch movies on TV. I just recently updated to Snow Leopard from 10.4 and for some reason it looks like my resolution is all jacked up. I see that my resolution options have decreased on the video preferences and no matter which one I use I get a real bad blur and sometimes a distorted B&W picture on my tv.
    Any ideas?
    TIA
    A

Hello. I don't know what part of the world you're in but if you're in North America TVs typically operate on the NTSC format and if you're in another part of the world PAL is used. If you have an option in System Preferences, make sure the appropriate choice is selected.
