Recommend me an audio interface

I need an audio interface - PCI, Firewire or USB-2 - with a bunch of inputs and outputs (min. 6 in, 4 out), a couple of universal XLR/minijack input jacks with good pre-amps and, here's the clincher, separate level controls for headphones and monitor output.
Does anyone know of anything that suits my needs?

I agree, I would stay away from M-Audio and definitely from Digidesign. I really want to recommend Metric Halo and the RME Fireface, but they are both out of your budget and do not give you separate headphone and monitor knobs on the physical interface (except the ULN2 which is limited in i/o options).
I would look into Presonus first, and MOTU second. I think the converters on the Presonus interfaces are slightly better. But MOTU interfaces are pretty solid and have good drivers.
Good luck.

  • Please recommend the best audio interface not the firebox!!!!

i am not sure if this unit is doing what i want it to do.
what audio interface are you using (firewire) to record external synth/guitar
and recording out of its audio outs to a recording device like a minidisc at the same time monitors are connected to it. The firebox is eccentric, sometimes the drivers are there in the midi audio and sometimes they arent.
which brand are you using with consistent results?
its always hit and miss with this firebox. im using OS 10.4.11 and just upgraded the new software mixer and control at its web site.
garageband has gotten so good now its the audio interface failing me.
    thanks

I use the M-Audio Firewire solo. It's super reliable and I think it's got everything you need. As long as your drivers are good, you're good to go. Just make sure that you DO NOT plug it in when the computer is on (as with all firewire products)! I ruined one that way.. then turned around and bought another one.
    Love the thing.

  • Audio Interface recommendation?

I just bought logic pro sutdio for my macbook pro. I'm looking for a recommendation for an Audio interface.
Preferably good quality / low price / 2 inputs ok / include USB interface.
    Any suggestions?
My friend likes the Apogee Duet, but it's kind of expensive.

Interesting. I've heard great things about the Duet, but not THAT specifically. My MOTU sometimes makes me breakfast and tells me I'm cool. It's nice to hear.
Actually the MOTU seems to have more expandablility than the Duet (as I can tell, I haven't used the Duet). The MOTU has 10 analog outs, MIDI, S/Pdif, and 6 1/4 inch ins, as well as the stuff that the Duet has, XLR's, headphones, main outs, etc. You can actually use it as an analog to digital converter/mixer, without a computer.
Anyway, I've heard the Duet is a great piece. If you need more ins and outs like me, check out Ultralite.
    Good Luck!

  • 5.1 Surround Sound monitoring audio interface suggestions

I will be editing some live theatricals for Blue Ray, and want to use 5.1 Surround Sound tracks edited in Sound Track Pro. But I need an Audio Interface to be able to monitor the 6 channels of output in the editing, before I burn the Blu Rays. Does anyone have a manufacturer / model recommendation for an audio interface that will allow me to monitor this surround sound mix on my Mac?
I have speakers, and will need to get an amp, or will one of the Bose systems connect with this inrerface? And I don't need multi-channel input as much as output. I'm a newbie - your advice would be much appreciated.

I use the Focusrite Sapphire for 5.1 surround editing in Soundtrack Pro. Works very well. Very simple to set up and use. Good interface software and they keep updates posted on their website.
For monitors I use the M-Audio LX4's. You can buy them in a surround package with powered woofer. They are small but are good quality. Not sure if they are still made as I got mine a few years ago.
    Good luck.
This set up gives me realtime monitoring from SP.

  • Audio Interface for monitoring, mixing 5.1 St Surround in FCP and Sd Tr Pro

I'm a fairly newbie with FCP and Sound Track Pro, and I am doing mostly long form, live event HDV recordings and editing. I'm about to start doing 5.1 Stereo Surround shooting and burning to Blu Ray. What do you recommend for an audio interface for my G4 PowerBook running Leopard w/2GB ram, to monitor/mix my 5.1 audio tracks in Sound Track Pro (since I can't monitor 5.1 in FCP?) I will likely be recording the tracks on the new Sound Devices 788T and inporting them into FCP and/or STP via firewire, but I need to monitor my mix before I burn to Blu Ray discs using Toast 10 and my LaCie BR burner.
Also has anyone found a way to use Bose 5.1 monitor speaker system? It would work fine for the BR player, but what about using with the Mac G4 PowerBook - do I need a digital audio - audio interface?

You'll need an audio-interface with at least 6 outputs. They should be connected to a surround processor or AV-Receiver with multichannel inputs. In line with your budget you could use M-Audio, Focusrite or Apogee products for that, they work with STP & Protools.
When monitoring, you cannot use the Bose system, because S/Pdif is for encoded audio only.

  • Recommendations for intel compatible midi and audio interfaces?

Right now I'm looking for recommendations on a small and cheap midi interface that already has Universal drivers.
Also, what audio interfaces are people using with intel macs? Who has drivers ready besides MOTU?

I've got an m-audio firewire 410, which is supposed to be a compatable interface, but the midi doesn't seem to work at all and the headphone cue only works when you monitor the aux sends.
-Know that even if you get one of the compatible interfaces, you may have to wait for a driver update before it functions at 100%.

  • Recommendations for audio interface with new mac pro to avoid latency?

    Hi friends,
I have a new Mac Pro on order for editing video in FCPX, but Presonus says my older Presonus Firebox won't work with Mavericks and the new Mac Pro. Do you have a recommendation for a replacement?
I only use the interface to drive 2 powered expternal speakers and a headset, so I don't need something super sophisticated.
As I read about units, almost all come with USB 2.0 connections. But the new Mac Pro only offers USB, Thunderbolt 2, Dual Gigabit Ethernet, and HDMI 1.4 Ultra HD inputs. If I can't find a fairly inexpensive audio interface with USB 3.0, I'd have to go through another connection to get into the Mac Pro.
The key for me is to make sure and avoid latency, a critical issue for editing video.
Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks. Duncan

    Thanks Mark and Smokerz,
Your point about USB2 working in USB3 ports is something I wasn't aware of. That opens a lot of doors for me. And I'll look into the Yamaha sound board as one possibility.
Thank you both for helping me.

  • Please recommend audio interface /soundcard

I need a good audio interface / soundcard for my Power Mac G5.
    My criteria are as follows:
Must work perfectly with the G5 in OS 10.4.
Must have excellent A/D and D/A convertors
Must have digital in/out and balanced line in/out
    Must have 1/4'' headphone out
    Must support a minimum of 24bit, 48kHz
I do not need any pre-amps or bundled software, I don't need it to be portable, and I only need stereo in/out.
The D/A and A/D convertors are the most important feature for me, so must be low noise, flat signal response, low harmonic distortion etc.
I would also like it to be cheap, certainly no more than £200 ($368 / €291).
I am not sure whether PCI Express, Firewire or USB would be best; - I am willing to consider them all.
    What I have already:
Studio Projects VTB1 pre-amp (male XLR balanced out)
Yamaha MSP3 speakers (female XLR balanced OR female 1/4'' TRS balanced)
    I use Logic Pro 7.1.1
What audio interface / soundcard do you recommend? - Please give me some options for me to investigate further. All responses are much appreciated.
    Thanks.

These companies have firewire devices for ~$300-$500:
    http://www.alesis.com/

Get firewire, not USB2. I don't know of any PCI Express audio devices except for Pro Tool's new hardware (expensive).

  • Recommend midi/audio interface

I am just getting back into home recording and have the following setup:
    Mackie 1604VLZpro mixer
    Akai S5000
    Various keyboards
    Effects.
    Guitars
    Vocal mic
I want to purchase a suitable midi/audio interface to work with my G5 DP1.8 / OSX 10.3.9. I am thinking of buying Logic express or pro, haven’t decided yet.
Can anyone recommend a suitable interface that would work well with my setup.
Could the audio, guitars and vocals, be routed back through my mixer independently once recorded into logic?
    Cheers
    Rob

Check on the Alesis io14 or io26 -- I read all the forums and this one is coming up as the best, especially at the price. Also recommended by my pro audio guru friend (not a salesperson). I bought it and it worked immediately with my MacBook Pro.....for both audio and MIDI. It's in your price range, and believe me the io26, in particular, is a lot of high-end audio for the money. It's light, compact, but most of all it has some of the best components and construction you can buy.
The following link is to a Harmony Central pro review of the io26. Review is located at http://acapella.harmony-central.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1562285
It's a long thread, dating back to its introduction in March, 07, and there is some discussion of early problems with certain computers and sequencing software. If you read through the entire thread you'll see they were resolved and that the reviews are very, very positive---especially the pro audio review by the Harmony Central reviewer.

  • Yamaha MO8 and Korg Volcas with Logic Pro X- recommendations for mixer and audio interface

I plan to use Logic Pro X to access and configure the patch list for my Yamaha MO8 workstation. The Steinberg software I downloaded previously didn't work and never allowed me to configure the sounds. From what I've heard, I was told to use a cheap mixer or a Audio/MIDI interface (like the Scarlett 2i2 or 4i4). The Yamaha MO8 will be used as a master and has MIDI IN, OUT, and THRU. I also have the Korg Volca synths to use as slaves (they only have the MIDI IN port), and plan to connect them to the MIDI THRU on the keyboard. I already have the Yamaha USB driver installed, and the Mac recognizes the device. I also have the Portmidi app and wonder if that will allow me to see the patch list (with the actual names, not numbers).
What mixer and audio/MIDI interface do you recommend to use the Yamaha MO8 and the Korg Volcas? Just to be clear, I don't want to use software synths, but would like to use the external instruments to get the audio (which I know can be selected through the Environment Panel on Logic Pro X).

Anything with 2 audio inputs and 2 MIDI outs.
-Out HP jack of Volca-1/8 to 1/4 adapter into Audio interface 1 (For any that are stereo use both 1 and 2 and use a Y splitter in addition to 1/8 to 1/4 adapters.
-Midi out from interface to Midi in of volca (Or buy a USB to MIDI interface for about $35)
-When starting up the volcas hold down the "Memory button" the LED will tell you what MIDI channel it is set to, you can change it if you wish)
-Create external MIDI track and set it to the same channel as the Volca (Only if you want to do sequencing in the DAW, if thee Volca sequencer is handling it then not necessary)
-Patch together the Volcas via the "synch out/Synch in" jacks to insure they are synched
-Record them all together or one at a time, depending on how many simultaneous tracks your interface can handle.

  • Recommend me a hardware audio interface?

I've got a Macintosh dual G5 with your standard 1/8" audio out jack and optical audio out. I imagine the G5, by default, is generally very low latency when it comes to audio processing.
But i get the feeling I should have some kind of larger scale audio interface for my mac. I'm thinking of something like these. Can anyone make a recommendation? For these or for any others?

A lot depends on what kind of recording you want to do and what your budget is.
I am very happy with my Presonus FirePod - 8 mic pre-amps, inputs can be set-up for instrument level (2 inputs), line level (6 inputs ) or microphones (up to 8) with or without phantom power. Good A to D and D to A conversion. Runs about $600 new.

I have heard good things about the M-Audio Project Mix I/0. 8 mic / line inputs. 8 mic pre-amps. Good A to D and D to A. Plus an extensive control surface with touch sensitive motorized faders that integrates well with Logic. Runs about $1250 new.

  • What audio interface would you recommend for Garageband?

I'm a new Garageband user, and I would love to have some help in choosing an audio interface for.
Is there an interface that is widely considered the "garageband interface"? Are there interfaces for Garageband that have phantom power?
I'm looking for something that is reasonable in price. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!

I'm another "I'd stay away from Behringer" person!
For an inexpensive Garagebandy interface, I'd check out M-Audio and PreSonus.
