Recommendation for upgrading to R2

Trying to map out a plan for upgrading Service Manager 2012 SP1 RU2 to R2. All clients, whether installed locally on the workstation or via Citrix use the SP1 console. I believe all the clients are RTM SP1 so no rollups installed.
Servers are SP1 RU2 installed. We only have 4 servers. The Orchestrator which has already been upgraded to R2 because we don't use it now. The Data Warehouse, the Service Manager server itself and a self service portal on SharePoint.
Trying to figure out whether to upgrade the clients for and then servers or servers first and then circle back and upgrade clients. I tested the SP1 console again an R2 test sever and it seems to work just fine as does an R2 console against a Prod SP1 server.
Really confusing.
MS can't expect you to upgrade all your clients at once so there has to be compatibility between the product versions. Any suggestions on how to approach it?

  • Need Oracle 12c whitepaper recommendation for upgrade assessment

    Hi:  Good morning!
This is not an urgent request, but appreciate your recommendation!  I need documents about Oracle 12c (our os is IBM AIX power system, 6.1, 64 bit), because we are planning upgrade current oracle database 11.2.0.4 to 12c, we need a thorough assessment to 12c  since 12c introduced many innovative, new features, major component changes, as well as impact to java application.  The document I have so far is-
    1. database upgrade guide
    http://docs.oracle.com/database/121/UPGRD/preup.htm#UPGRD002
    2. Deprecated API (oracle database JDBC Java API Reference)
    https://docs.oracle.com/database/121/JAJDB/deprecated-list.html
    3. Tom Kytes Top 12 new features for Oracle 12c (from web).
There are many things to look for.  I want to know the major things I should focus in new features & impact to java application.
what document can provide me the info!
thank you very much in advance!

    Hi all:
Can anyone gives me advice after upgrade from 11.2.0.4 database to 12c database, which 'core-DB new features' impact to Java application more, and that we should focus on assessment?
There are too many new & innovative features introduced in 12c. Should I convert our single instance database (on non-cluster server) to 'CDB/PDB' during upgrade? Is it a 'Must-to-do' or not?  We have a physical standby DB, how to do with the standby?
Oracle Documents I reviewed are: 'Oracle 12c database document', 'Oracle 12c Java Developer's Guide'. I recommend this to our developers based on 'Oracle 12c Java Developer's Guide':
    Oracle JVM  (  JDK6, JDK7 support in 12)
[note:need to check jvm components for application: library manager, compiler, interpreter, class loader, server-side JDBC internal driver, server-side SQLJ, translator, system classes; Java stored procedure, SQLJ, JDBC, etc]
    2. Oracle Memory Space management      (         garbage collection)
    3. Multithreading
    4. Footprinting
    5. Dynamic class loading
    6. JNDI class support
    7. Auditing for Java ( alert/execute/audit/grant is enabled in auditing)
    8. Support for logging
    9. Support for customizing default java.security resource
    10. Improved for debugging
However, I may lost myself in core-DB new features for:
    1. advanced analytics features
    2. OLAP features
    3. Partitioning enhance
    4. Performance for zero effort
    5. Compression and Archiving features (depends on application tables design)
    6. Database Overall
       - Integrate With Operating System Processor Groups
       - Oracle Data Pump Support
       - Multitenant Architecture (Not sure)
       - PDBs Backup and Recovery  (Not sure)
       - PDBs Point-in-Time Recovery  (Not sure)
       - PDBs Resource Plans  (Not sure)
       - Utilities
    7. High Availability
       - Application Continuity
       - Transaction Guard
       - Logical Replication
       - Global Data Services
       - Online Operations
       - Oracle Data Guard Enhancements (Depends on our standby design)
    8. Manageability
       - PGA Size Limit
       - Resource Manager Runaway Query Management
       - Spot ADDM
    9. General
       - DBMS_QOPATCH
    10. Performance
    11. Security enhance
    12. Improve Security Manageability, Administration and Integration
        - Database vault
Is my above suggestion (text in red-color) correct?
    Thank you very much!

  • Recommendations for upgrade of iBook G4

    Dear Fellow Mac Users,
I have an old mac that works pretty well but I am thinking of upgrading some of the hardware to keep up with the new software upgrades from mac. Here are the specs:
    Model: iBook G4
OS: Mac OS X Ver. 10.4.11
    Processor: 1.2 Ghz PowerPC G4
    Memory: 256 MB Built-in
I am looking forward for your generous expert advice to also upgrade my mac user experience.
    Thanks!

I also have an iBook G4, running OS 10.4.11, with 800 MHz PowerPC G4 processor, and the original 256MB DDR SDRAM memory. I've already upgraded the operating system once, and I'm wondering if it's really worth my while to upgrade (fill empty memory slot w/640MB max. vs. 1.25 GB per recommendations in this post??) hardware and software again. Can I? Should I? Or, am I better off going to a new computer at this point? I'm curious to the opinions of similar users trying to stretch the use of their computer. I've had this one 5 years, and enjoyed the small sized laptop immensely. But, I am getting frustrated with the slowness of it all. The hard drive had reached maximum capacity, so I moved photos and music to an external hard drive. But I don't think it helped with anything speed-wise, even securely emptying trash. Any other suggestions? I'm also having frequent trouble with Safari locking up and watching video in Safari - runs really slow. Thanks in advance for sharing your input!
Your machine apparently comes with 128 MB permanently soldered onto the main board. The standard configuration was apparently a 128 MB module pre-installed for 256 MB total. Apple officially declared that it would max out at 640 MB, although unofficially it can handle a 1 GB module for a total of 1152 MB (1-1/8 GB).
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/stats/ibookg4_80012.html
The following upgrade should work. I personally have one of these for my iBook G4 1.42:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145068
Your machine won't load Leopard without some sort of third-party hack. The retail copy of Leopard would just refuse to upgrade on your machine. It requires that the machine be at least a G4 running at 867 MHz.
Running any kind of high-def video is a no go. Even with my iBook G4 1.42 maxed with memory, it massively drops frames with high-def video. It noticeably slows down when running several embedded web page Java or Flash apps. The PowerPC G4 processor was dated a long, long time ago. The switch to dual-core Intel processors was the best thing Apple did for the usability of their portable computing, since it was clear that IBM was never going to be able to produce a G5 processor suitable for portable computing. I mean - the initial Power Mac G5 desktops ran so hot and used so much power that they had to be liquid cooled.
I wouldn't say that you need to get rid of it, but if you can afford it, maybe a new or even used MacBook would make many of those performance problems go away. The new white MacBook is a killer deal at $999, and it would be cheap and easy to upgrade the hard drive.

  • Performance Recommendations for Upgrade from 2009 MBP

i am looking to upgrade from a 13" 2009 MBP which I am using to run Parallels 7 (among other things) and which i have not been happy with performance-wise. I went ahead and put a full 8 GB of RAM in it and still too many hangs and delays. I am however pretty happy with my old Mac Pro.
Can anyone help me with recommendations on buying a new laptop? I mean, I don't really see myself running computationally intensive operations and this thing is pretty much a drag.
Also, battery life is 3 hours with it just sitting there with no apps running which means when i use it I am under 2 hours and that just seems inexusable to me.
    TIA

and also Wikipedia Intel processors line up, to see what's coming next.
When the time is right, buy the most powerful hardware you can afford and good case like a MacTruck.
Take good care of your hardware because you need to make it last 5-7 years or even more.

  • Recommendations for upgrade & migration path/documentation

I have a client running portal 3.0.9.8.0 and Forms/Reports 6i on Windows 2000. The repository database is running on some flavor of HP unix, HPUX I believe.
They want to upgrade portal and reports to the latest, but not forms (apparently there is some functionality that they use that is no longer present in the more recent version). They also want to move the portal and reports to a second unix box...
and they only want ot give me one day of downtime to accomplish this (Sunday of course).
Would it be better to migrate the midtier ot unix and then upgrade, or upgrade and then migrate to unix? I'm thinking probably the latter since getting the older installation media for HPUX might be a challenge...
Also, can I just move the .rdf files and recompile on the HP machine, or is there something more that needs to be done there? Not finding a lot of documentation on migrating reports... mostly just seeing forms.
Can anyone point me to some good documentation?
    TIA
    Marion

GPS is actually easy and quick for the most part - typically an event easily assigns to a single location so you open the info pane for the event and assign the GPS to the whole event at once
In other instances when you are moving you still can assign a location to the first photo in a location, copy the photo (edit menu ==> copy or Command-C) and select the remaining photos at that location and paste the location (edit menu ==> paste location)
Of course I got a GPS camera which is even better  - and reason to get a new camera
The places display is fun - especially on the iPad - and the maps for books are great for vacations

  • Recommendations for upgrading to snow leopard

Any recommendations/suggestions prior to upgrading from tiger to snow leopard?

As Allan already said, you should have a complete backup - whenever doing a major upgrade, it is recommended that you make sure you have your contents backed up. In case of failure (doesn't necessarily happen, but could.....), at least you haven't lost all your stuff.
So, either get an external hard drive and create a bootable clone (that means you use SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner to copy all the info to the external and it will be bootable so you can boot from that external in case of a major hiccup with your internal drive) or, at the very least, get a smaller drive and copy (simply drag and drop) your own files over.
Run verify disk BEFORE install: Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility; highlight your drive and click on verify disk.
Repair Permissions: do AFTER upgrade: same path; this time click on Repair Permissions.

  • Recommendations for upgrading from Tiger

    I have Tiger 10.4.11
    Model Name: iMac
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
I have an unopened version 10.5 Leopard. Should I start by installing that, then the upgrade of Snow Leopard? Or should I buy the $169 upgrade of Snow Leopard & star there? Any input would be appreciated! Thank you!

If you have Leo then start by installing it using Archive and Install option:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
After you have a successful Leo system running you will need to purchase Snow Leopard ($29.00) which can be used to upgrade the Leo system.
    Also do this:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions on your current system.
    2. Make and test a bootable clone of your existing system before doing any upgrades.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the backup drive.
    Source means the startup drive.

    I am using os x 10.4.11.
Do I need to upgrade to 10.5.xx? Will this platform suport 10.6.xx? If 10.6 will work do I need to install 10.5 first?

Hi. Your computer can be upgraded to either Leopard 10.5 or Snow Leopard 10.6. 10.6 will be much easier to find and will be less expensive. Leopard is not required prior to upgrading to Snow Leopard.

  • Clone Hard Drive for Upgrade & other recommendations...

I have a MB Pro 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo w/ a 160 GB 7200 RPM Harddrive. I am about out of room and would like to do a HD upgrade. I have a 40GB BootCamp partition w/ Windoze XP installed and run Parallels.
I really don't want to have to reinstall everything. Not even a bit. So, I am wondering if I can get a hard drive and install it in an external enclosure, clone it somehow, and then swap it out. Will that work? And is there a special piece of software I would need to do it?
Also, what is the best recommendation for a new Hard Drive? I'm thinking 500 GB...
    OK, thanks for any help...

Yes, it will. You can do it either way, this is, you can install the HDD, place the replaced drive in an enclosure and clone, or place the new HDD in an enclosure, format and clone. Test boot, then swap in the drive.
And is there a special piece of software I would need to do it?
Both SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner are both excellent. You can then use either for regular updates. SuperDuper requires registration for $28 to unlock all the features. CCC is donation ware.
what is the best recommendation for a new Hard Drive? I'm thinking 500 GB...
500 GB will take a while to fill up, and will be great. Seagate recently came out with a 500 GB 7200 rpm drive that is available at OWC.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.

I upgraded to OS8 for my Iphone 5 and now I have no access to e-mail and several apps. How can I address this problem? For those who have an iphone 5 I recommend not upgrading to the new OS until these bugs are resolved.

I foolishly downloaded OS8 on my iPhone 4S. It not only greyed out my wifi button making it impossiblr to use wifi, but bluetooth connection doesn't work either. I reset the phone to factory settings but that did nothing apart from loose all my photos and contacts. OS 8 was still on after too. Apple say it is a problem but the download only brought the fact the hardware was faulty to the fore, but not being under warranty , the repair would cost £166 that I would have to pay. Totally unacceptable. If the problem was known and they knew it would cause problems on older models, why have it bob up on iTUNES for download.
Don;t download it guys, APPLE aren't admitting culpability and it will cost you a fortune to put right!!

  • Recommendations for Help Desk (issue tracking) program for Mac OS

    Hello all
Any recommendations for a help desk software to be mainly used for issue tracking/ticket management applications for Mac OS?
I prefer for the app to run local on the Mac so no web or server software.
    Thank you

I also use CS5 (Design Suite) on a Mac. When I upgraded to Lion, Illustrator did not crash for me, but it (and Photoshop) was acting squirrelly and some of the features did not work at all. After six weeks, I reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled Snow Leopard. Now everything works perfectly.
The other thing I did was to partition my hard drive so that I can reinstall Lion on the new partition. That way, I can run either operating system and run application programs on the OS that is most appropriate for it. I have no problems moving files between the partitions.
Not the most attractive solution, but I am very satisfied. Just my two cents...!
    Good luck!

  • Current recommendation for a hosting partner?

I found a good convo here from 2013 that yielded one recommendation, and a few stay-away-froms. But that was two years ago. Much can change! Who would you recommend for a good hosting partner today?
My husband's small business is besieged by what is likely a routing or peering issue at Cogent. Regardless, neither our host, Newtek (previously Crystaltech), nor our service provider are willing to help -- not that these situations can be solved, from what I've heard from networking pros and others on the 'net complaining about similar problems. (And by help, I mean having someone in their network ops group call someone down the line in hopes of getting the attention necessary to solve the problem.)
We don't have a choice in service providers due to his location. So, it looks like my best bet in solving the problem is going to be switching hosts. I don't want to -- we've been with them for like 15 years, no kidding! But... this problem has grown from something that popped up briefly once or twice in the morning to a more often than not we can't get to our services and trace routes die MOST of the time.
Vivio Technologies (viviotech.net) got the nod in the last thread. Any additional recommendations? Or, nightmares to avoid?
    Thanks!

For some sites I host on the side I use Hostek and I cannot say enough good things about them. Uptime has been great. Support on a few issues I did have has been even better.
Avoid Intermedia.net -- their CF support is CF8 (maybe 9) and I don't get any indication that they intent to upgrade. I would also avoid HostMySite.com if your site requires any security -- specifically keeping up with O/S patches.
