Recommendations for server rack temp monitoring?

Our server room isn't large, we only have one rack with two Xserves, an Xserve RAID and a few other things. But temperature is obviously a concern and I worry about the day when the portable AC unit kicks the bucket and I'm away from the office.
Does anyone have recommendations some kind of temp monitoring device with email notifications, maybe web monitoring?

At work, we use a rack-mount Senturion Environment Monitor, it monitors the temp, humidity, etc. It can send SMS and email alerts, and you can monitor it on the web, it just needs power and a network connection. We got it when our AC actually did kick the bucket and 50 servers overheated. :-/

  • Management Pack for Server 2008 OS Monitoring version 6.0.7296 cannot be installed or downloaded from the catalog

In our newly installed Operations Manager I'm trying to install the MP's for monitoring Windows Server 2008 OS through the catalog option. Every attempt (including downloading it through the OpsMgr console) fails with the following error:
Windows Server 2008 Operating System (Monitoring) did not pass the security verification.
The management pack cannot be downloaded and the temporary file has been deleted.
Could not load management pack [ID=Microsoft.Windows.Server.2008.Monitoring, Keytoken=31bf3856ad364e35, Version=6.0.7296].
This includes the required packs: "Windows Server Operating System Library v6.0.7296" and "Windows Server 2008 Operating System (Discovery) v6.0.7296".
The only option I found was downloading it directly from the website http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=9296 but I'm a bit anxious if it can't be downloaded from the catalog. Is this pack revoked? Or could there be something wrong
in our environment that prevents us from downloading it from the catalog?

I have the exact same issue - and when I select to download from the catalog, I get an error that the security certificate cannot be verified. I checked it, and it is valid till 2016, so I selected continue and then it works normally. however I do get the
    same list of errors.
The normal "manual" download is available, and if it was pulled by MS, they would block the download button there too ?
I downloaded the MP manually and installed it without any issues. same for the sharepoint 2010 MP 14.0.7135.5000 mp. installing via the catalog failed while the manual download was available and works OK.
(and the weird thing is - I downloaded / installed a few other updates via the catalog fine....)

  • Recommendations for Server Layout

    Hello Folks,
We currently have the Oracle 9i app server and since it has the infrastructure database in the same machine the filesystems are laid out according to the OFA (Optimal Flexible Architecture) guidelines. When I installed the Weblogic server I noticed that it just asks for one directory and the configuration is all in the files. So, assuming that I install the Weblogic Server + Oracle's Identity Management + Weblogic Portal should I just create one filesystem, e.g. /appserver for all these products or do you have some other recommendations? If, instead of Weblogic Portal I install the Oracle WebCenter Suite would your recommendations change? I just would like to plan out our server well before I do a full install and start developing portlets on it.
    Thanks,

  • Recommendations for server setup

I have two clients that are considering installing an Apple server. I've looked for, but apparently have missed, recommendations as to the hardware required for any given number of users on the network. One is a three person shop, which I assume a Mini will be plenty, but the other will have between 40 and 60. I don't want to steer them to an XServe when a Mac Pro will work, nor do I want to leave them underpowered and in need of an upgrade.
Any help in pointing me to the correct documentation or advice will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

I appreciate the input, but I think I may not have provided enough details. The larger client, the 40 to 60 user one, is a new client. I'm not sure as to what their needs are as I haven't had the opportunity to interview them in any detail. Based on what little they've said, I think Snow Leopard may be a good fit for them, that's why I'm looking to get more information, but I'm not even sure about that yet. It's a new company in a new building, so I need to dig deeper prior to making any recommendations. I have the necessary information for MS and *nix installations, along with over 14 years experience with each. But I have nothing in the way of documentation for OS X Server, and little experience beyond small installations in mixed environments. I don't want to assume, for example, that Postfix running on OS X has exactly the same behavior it does when running on *nix. While it may be the same, I want to see the documentation to prove it to me.
I'm not looking someone to say that I need a Mac Pro with 4GB of RAM and that will handle exactly 42 users and be adequate for the next 3.24 years. That's not what I intended to ask. Nor am I looking or someone to provide a guess at their end user's needs or network habits, I can get that information myself as I get more familiar with the client. Instead, I'm looking for documentation or advice as to where to look so that I can determine what's necessary. Once I have the documentation, I can formulate, based on my experience, a hopefully solid solution to their server needs. Again, I don't want to blindly recommend a XServer when a Mac Pro will be more than adequate. I'm comfortable with the Mini for the smaller client. I've worked with them for years and a Mini would be an upgrade to what they have now. It's just a matter of convincing them to spend the money. The larger client has way too may variables for me to just guess, that's why I want to review any available documentation that's more in depth than just the standard system requirements. I've Googled for several hours, but I just can't seem to find anything that goes beyond the basics.
Thanks again for the input, I guess I'll keep looking.

  • Backup routines for server

    Hi
I'm finding it hard to understand leopard server and time machine. I have noted that Time Machine is not recommended for "advanced servers", but I have also noted that in the documentation for ical server apple states the following
"The Mac OS C v10.5 Time Machine feature is not recommended for server file and system backup of advanced configuration servers"
Since english is not my native language I'm led to wonder if that line exclusively refers to "advanced configuration servers"? If so can i draw the conclusion that apple recommends Time Machine for other configurations than advanced server? And finally, what is it about "advanced server" that makes it unsuitable for Time Machine? If I have time machine set to advanced server but only have standard server services activated why should that be a problem?
I understand that the forum primarily deals with "problems" and that one rarely sees posts saying things work. That being said, are there many that successfully use Time Machine for their server?
    Thanks

    Hi
Just an opinion but if you are not using the Mail Service then I don't see why not? I've a feeling its safe to use even if the Server is an OD Master. However if all you want are standard File Services then you should be able to configure a sharepoint for Time Machine backup and point clients to it:
    http://lists.apple.com/archives/macos-x-server/2007/Dec/msg00051.html
Possibly the three types of Server 'Roles' may be confusing people? Standard does not necessarily mean 'Simple'. If you want 'Simple' select Advanced. If all you want is AFP or SMB or both, enable the Services (no need for DNS) and you are done. Only Advanced gives you control over all the services. Yes the system log will bleat 'DNS host name not found run repair utility etc' every few seconds but it won't stop the server from working. As an added 'bonus' selecting Authentication Method to Standard (PasswordServer) should stop AFP disconnects as reported on these forums.

I'm looking for a new monitor for my Powermac G4 450 MHz AGP (sawtooth).
I'm currently using a Formac Gallery 1740 after 6 years it's starting to faded out on me.
I'd really appreciate any suggestion or Recommendations for a new one.

I'm using a 17" LCD, Acer model AL1706 on my G4 400MHz AGP. Was plug 'n play and has been flawless over the years. I'm sure the current model numbers are different.

  • Hardware sizing recommendations for B2B Server

My customer Welch Foods Inc. is on 11i Oracle eBusiness Suite and is planning to uptake the latest 1Sync integration features in the PIM product. For out-of-box AS2 connectivity with 1Sync - they are planning to use Oracle B2B Integration Server 10.1.2.3.
They have an average transaction volume of 30 transactions per month. One time - initial load of 20,000 transactions.
Based on the above estimates, they are looking for hardware sizing recommendations for the B2B server.
    Your assistance is much appreciated.
    Asmi Maharishi
    SDM for Welch Foods.

    Thanks for your reply!
Here are the responses to your queries:
    1. Is B2B instance going to run alone in a box
Yes, B2B instance will run alone on a box.2. what will be the size of message
Messages can be anywhere from 5-20 KB3. how many messages will be part of a transaction.
It should be 2 - Registration and publication. But sometimes it depends on how successful the first “registration” goes. Typically we get one or two errors that the users go into PLM, correct and re-send.However, Looking at your current requirement, 30 transaction per month, we can easily address in a 4 GB machine itself.
Additionally, Oracle B2B supports 10+ messages per second in 32GB, 4 processor machine.
Memory suggested above is 4GB, does that take into account memory used by the 10G App server foot print or this is only to take care of messages? Also, how many Processors (Risk IBM) will be needed?

  • Monitor Recommendations for Use with Captivate

Anyone have any monitor recommendations for use with Captivate? Size and resolution?

The formal adobe  recommendation is as posted 1024x768 is fine.
But, monitors are not that expensive, so for productivity and better work environment I recommend at least one wide screen 22" with resolution  1600X1200 or more  and that supports 1080 for video.
You need the  wide screen ( or  two monitors) so you can work with all the tools in one view.

  • Monitor recommendations for PS/CS5.5 print work

Hopefully this won't be retreading old ground too much, but I'm looking for monitor recommendations for using with CS5.5 for print work in Photoshop and InDesign mainly on a new Mac Mini. I've got a Spyder 3 for calibration already so that side of things is covered - the Apple Thunderbolt display is a bit of range financially, plus I'm not sure about the glossy screen myself, ideally I'd be looking to spend no more than £500 and size wise about 24" would be the ideal size due to the amount of deskspace available to me. TIA for any/all help/recommendations!

    For starters look heere:
    http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/
The degree of perfection is dependent on your final needs. A studio doing catalog work is going to need a monitor all the way up to top providers like Eizo. for my needs where I output to an Epson 3800 and bigger, I find the dell u2412 to be ideal, and at your price category, maybe 2 will fit the budget.
The 2412 does not cover the full Adobe RGB gamut, but it does cover sRGB IEC 61966-2-1:1999, the current preference for  online color. I use it because correcting the monitor to match the print for b&w is paramount, and the best monitors for this use LED backlight. The u2412 is admirable for this especially at it's price point.
I also use a 2nd monitor but it is a smaller 4:3 aspect ratio. It's use is strictly for tools and such.
The 2412 is a 16:10 aspect ratio and is far better, imo, for graphics work. Also (and maybe especially!) it is very close to the golden mean ratio giving it a wonderful presentation format. Check it out where you see 16:9 and 16:10 side by side.
When I am working closely with adjustment layers I have enough room on my screen to pull over the specific palette next to the image while tweaking, a big help without losing the ability to fill the screen later if you wish. Simply move the palette back to it's home on the other screen.
    Good Luck!

  • I need a recommendation for a 24" monitor for my late 2013 MacBook Pro

I need a recommendation for a 24" professional photography monitor for my late 2013 MacBook Pro.  I am looking for a monitor that plays well with my 13" late 2013 Macbook pro.  I tryed the Dell U2413 and found after the fact that it did not work well with my Macbook pro.  Read up on the Asus PA 249Q, It also seems to have problems with my Macbook Pro.  Apple display is larger than i want.  Looking for recommendations for compatable IPS monitor for use with Aperture. buget is $300 to $800.
    Anybody happy with thiers?

Any monitor will work. Decide what specs work best for your needs and get that monitor.

  • The Server Core installation option is recommended for servers running Hyper-V

  • Which of the two monitors do you recommend for Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5:  EIZO CG 277 Coloredge o

    HI,
Which of the two monitors do you recommend for Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5:
EIZO CG 277 Coloredge or NEC PA-272W.
Thanks in advance for your reply.

It depends on where you are. Things are very different in Europe (Italy?) compared to the US situation.
The price difference between comparable NEC/Eizo models in Europe actually goes in Eizo's favor. The regular NEC PA272 in Europe cannot be hardware calibrated (it has a firmware lock) and the comparable offering would be either the NEC Spectraview 272 or the Spectraview Reference 272. These are more expensive than the Eizo CG277.
Note that the European PA272 can be hardware calibrated with the US Spectraview II software - but that software cannot be bought in Europe and has to be imported from the US.
All these displays are top reference quality. As for calibration software, which is a very important part in the equation, my vote goes to Eizo's ColorNavigator (I have a CG246). It is a superb piece of well thought-out software. The US Spectraview II - which I also happen to have - is a very, very close second, but the European Spectraview Profiler software that you get with the EU NEC units isn't all that impressive.
Photoshop supports a 10 bit display pipeline, with either display, as long as you have a video card that also supports it. Lightroom doesn't support it.

  • What ideal Win Server and Hardware are recommended for 11g DBs

What best Win Server and Hardware are recommended for 11g DBs?
    - Processor
    - Memory
    - Storage
    - Network
    - Etc...
    Following is the scenario:
    - The server will be for development and test DBs
    - More than one databases will be installed each for each project
    - Maximum 4 databases will be accessed each time
    - Maximum DB size for each DB will be in couple of GBs.

Which version of 11g ? For 11gR2, see the requirements here - http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e16773/reqs.htm#i1011417
Any server that exceeds these requirement will suffice. Obviously the more the number of processors, the faster the processors, the more the RAM, the more the disk etc etc, the better.
