Recommended battery use

hi, i'm trying to make sure my battery life remains as effective as possible. i've read articles that mention doing a drain once a month or so, and i've been doing that.
but one thing i'm curious about is whether or not it's best to have your computer plugged into the power at all times?
the apple site recommends you don't - that an ideal way to use it would be to fully charge it, then use it on battery until it goes into the red, then recharge... but i've been getting the 'you are using reserver battery power' message quite a bit, which i wonder might not be a good thing.
so, which is better for your battery - plugged into power all the time, or only plugging in when needing to fully charge?
can anyone clarify this for me? thanks.

First, there's nothing wrong with using the computer on AC all the time. But if you do then once every two or three months you should recalibrate the battery according to Apple's instructions. If you never use the battery and do not recalibrate periodically then the battery will go dead on its own usually within 2-3 years.

  • HT1446 Battery use

I have Macbook Pro Retina Display. Should I plug in the wire at all time so that I don't use the battery or should I charge it to 100% then use it to maybe 10% then recharge it again to 100%? Which one is the best way to preserve the battery power? And which one is the best to preserve my battery?

You can leave it plugged in all the time if you want, ...and OFF.
*However if you dont plan on using it for a few hours, turn it OFF (plugged in or otherwise), ...*you dont want it both always plugged in AND in sleep mode
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
"Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time."
Keep it plugged in when near a socket so you keep the charging cycles DOWN on your LiPo (lithium polymer) cells / battery.
*Contrary to some myths out there, there is protection circuitry in your macbook and therefore you cannot 'overcharge' it when plugged in and already fully charged
You certainly CAN leave your macbook plugged in all the time, take it off charge and drain the battery down to 15 or 20% every couple of weeks or so.
LiPo (lithium polymer, same as in your macbook) batteries do not need conditioning. However...
LiPo batteries do NOT like to be dropped down to 15% or so often,....key word being "often"
A lot of battery experts call the use of LiPo cells the "80% Rule" ....meaning use 80% of the charge or so,.. then recharge them for longer overall life.
Never let your Macbook die from power, you can corrupt files that way, and the batteries do not like it.
The only quantified abuse seen to LiPo cells is instances when  often the cells are repeatedly drained very low.
Contrary to what some might say, LIPo batteries have an "ideal" break in period. First ten cycles or so, don't discharge down past 40% of the battery's capacity.
Same way you dont take a new car out and speed and rev the engine hard first 100 or so miles.
*Also, if youre going to store your macbook away for a few weeks or more,... make sure it has at least a 50% or so charge.
*Cycle count / use/ lifespan is one thing that cant be countered.
Proper treatment is another thing. Just because LiPo batteries dont need conditioning in general,.. does NOT mean they dont have an ideal use / recharge environment. Anything can be abused even if it doesnt need conditioning.
Just use and enjoy your new macbook,
    From Apple on batteries:
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1446
but really all you would keep in mind is --"consider 15-20% is the same as 0% and recharge it"
and best "tip" is if its near a socket, .....plug it in as long as you can (especially at home) since cycle count on the battery are the "miles that wear out the tires (battery)"
Important useful info on your Lithium cells as compiled from battery experts:
Heat increases battery performance but shortens life by a factor of two for every 10°C increase above 25–30°C (18°F above 77–86°F). This is yet another important reason for the cooling of any notebook, not just keeping the processor and GPU cool. Mavericks lower power tasking (app nap) and combined with the cool running Haswell processor both greatly protect battery life on your Macbook now more than ever before.
Good news: *Mavericks not only increases a single charge cycle for longer battery use off a full charge,… but also prolongs the overall long term life of the LiPo battery in a Macbook by reducing the load conditions the battery experiences from heavy peak-use.
Counting cycles is not conclusive because a discharge may vary in depth and there are no clearly defined standards of what constitutes a charge cycle on a Lithium Ion battery empirically. Similar to a mechanical device that wears out faster with heavy use, so also does the depth of discharge (DoD) determine the cycle count.
The shorter the discharge (low DoD), the longer the battery will last. If at all possible, avoid full discharges and charge the battery more often between uses. Partial discharge on Li-ion is fine.
Frequent HIGH depth of discharge rates (draining the battery very low) on a Lithium battery will hasten the lowering of maximum battery capacity.
Although better performing when warm, lithium polymer batteries live longer when kept cool.
Lithium cells prefer draining conditions at a steady pace rather than fast pulsed or quick discharges, …this fact is idealized now with the Haswell and Mavericks app-nap low power tasking for battery use.

  • I want to set up the Time Machine and I would love to use the Time  Capsule but since I already have a wireless router I need suggestions on  what other external disks Apple could recommend to use with the Time Machine and  how to configure that disk

I want to set up the Time Machine and I would love to use the Time
Capsule but since I already have a wireless router I need suggestions on
    what other
external disks Apple could recommend to use with the Time Machine and
    how to configure that disk.
A complication that I need to resolve is the fact that I am using Vmware
Fusion to be able to use Windows on my Mac. Now it seems that Time
Machine is not backing up my files
on that virtual Windows without additional configuration and my question
is whether you can advise me here or whether this is only a matter for
    the Fusion virtual machine.

If you want to use Time Capsule you can.. you simply bridge it and plug it into the existing router.. wireless can be either turned off or used to reinforce the existing wireless.. eg use 5ghz in the TC which is much faster than your 2.4ghz.
You can also use a NAS.. many brands available but the top brands are synology, qnap and netgear readynas  series. These will all do Time Machine backups although how well always depends on Apple sticking to a standard. There are cheaper ones.. I bought a single disk zyxel which was rebadged and sold through my local supermarket. It actually works very well for TM at least on Snow Leopard. Major changes were made in Lion and again ML so do not instantly think it will work on later versions. I haven't tried it yet with those versions.
Any external drive can be plugged into the mac. Use the one with the fastest connection or cheapest price according to your budget. USB2 drives are cheap and plentiful. But no where near as fast as USB3 or FW800. So just pick whichever suits the ports on your Mac. Interesting Apple finally moved to USB3 on their latest computers.
TM should exclude the VM partition file.. it is useless backing it up from Mac OS side.. and will slow TM as it needs to backup that partition everyday for no purpose.. TM cannot see the files inside it to backup just the changes.
You need to backup windows from windows. Use MSbackup to external drive.. if you have pro or ultimate versions you can backup to network drive. But MSbackup is a dog.. at least until the latest version it cannot restore the partition without first loading windows. There are about a zillion backup software versions for windows.. look up reviews and buy one which works for you. I use a free one Macrium Reflect which does full disk backups and is easy to restore.. to do incremental backups though you have to pay for it.

  • Is it not recommended to use a partitioned external hard drive for time machine?

    1. i hv a 1 tb seagate  back up plus hard disc ..,,i want to make partitions for  using it for time machine, mac, and window repectively . is it not recommended to use a partitioned drive for time machine? some where i have red that time machine wont be able to restore data from external partioned hard drive  in case internal hard drive crashes.
    2. if i use the seagate back up plus 1tb for mac only and use time machine to take backup (roughly 250 GB) , then the rest space i cant use to transfer movies, pictures from a PC
    3. how should i best use the seagate back up plus hard drive (not seagate back up plus for mac) in a way that i use it for back up , and to work with both mac and PC?

I use a partitioned external drive for Time Machine as well as other things.
How you partition it is a function of yoru needs.

  • Is it recommended to use HSRP or multiple default between Core Layer Switch and Customer Edge Router?

My client is asking me for following
Client is using Router as edge device. 2  WAN links from different service provider ( each 20 Mbps)  are getting terminated on the router. There are internal servers present in the network. Client want to make setup such that even if one wan link fails  internet users should be able to access web server. Moreover if the edge router fails there should be secondary edge device so that there is device redundancy ?
As per my understanding, in this scenario we need to do static one - to - one natting(belonging to WAN interface subnet). If we use two routers as Customer edge ans if we connect core layer switch to these two router, is it recommended to use HSRP/VRRP/GLBP or two default route on core switch pointing to two routers with equal ad value. we will also track the wan link with help of ip sla.
which is recommended solution  Router redundancy protocol or Default routes.?

Just had another read of this post and some other points have come up.
    1) I assumed your secondary link was for redundancy but you talk about terminating both SP links on the same router in your first paragraph.
Did you mean this or are you going to be terminating a link per router ?
    2) are you using the second router purely for backup ?
    3) something you didn't ask about but is relevant is the IP addressing. Are you using provider independent addressing or does each SP provide you with an address block.
If it is the second then you are going to have an issue with the web server. The problem is which provider's IP do you use for the web server ie.
if you use the primary provider IP then that will be the DNS record on the internet. If the primary router fails then the IP address will change on the secondary router but DNS will still be handing out the primary IP.
If you enter both IPs (primary and secondary) into DNS then you would get load balancing but this means both links will be used and the secondary would not just be backup.
In addition if one of the links fails then DNS does not know this so it will still be handing out the failed address as well as the address that is still up which means some connections will work and some won't.

I need to clarify how I can use adobe as a host for my site for free. I see where business catalyst is supposed to be temporary as well as it is recommended to use as the better alternative to launch my muse site. But then I have to use the long extension of "businesscatalyst" in addition to the domain name I'd prefer. How exactly can I take it live? do I have to use a third party hosting?

    Hi,
Once you are done with your sitet, Click on Publish in Muse, select New Site from the drop down, It will ask you a name for your site, which will be used for  site url, you will get a url like mysite.businesscatalyst.com, then go to the browser and login to the admin panel, mysite.businesscatalyst.com/admin and on Dashboard, click Launch site. This will push your site live, and you can then add your custom domain.
Also make sure that you have completed all these actions mentioned here

  • Monitor Recommendations for Use with Captivate

Anyone have any monitor recommendations for use with Captivate? Size and resolution?

The formal adobe  recommendation is as posted 1024x768 is fine.
But, monitors are not that expensive, so for productivity and better work environment I recommend at least one wide screen 22" with resolution  1600X1200 or more  and that supports 1080 for video.
You need the  wide screen ( or  two monitors) so you can work with all the tools in one view.

  • Battery uses with iOS 4.2

    Hi,
I have noticed a battery use issue after upgrading to iOS 4.2 My iphone and ipad battery is draining quicker than it did before the upgrade. For example, if my iphone (Model 3GS, 1.5 year old) was charged full and left idle for 24 Hrs, the charge drops just a few percent. I used to get 90-96% charge remaining after one day idle. Similarly, in ipad too, the charge will retain 85-95% if left one week idle after full charge. But after updating to iOS 4.2, the battery is draining quickly. iphone charge drops to approx 80-85% if left idle for one day and by 3rd day it drops to 20% if left idle. Similarly in ipad too the charge is dropping faster too. If kept idle for one week charge drops to some 70%. Did any one notice this? I am unhappy with this issue as it requires me to charge the devices quickly. Also the drain in charge is unreasonable as i have not used any extra feature which may use more energy.
    Thanks,
    N

Are you sure? I'm using 4.2.1 and don't have any battery issues with mine.
Did you check that nothing is running in the background? Some apps like Skype can still run in background even if you exit out of the app.
    Also try this:
Delete your mail account by going to Settings > Mail. Once deleted, do a hard reset, by holding the home button and the power button for 10-15 seconds until apple logo appears. Then re-set up your mail account. Sometimes the mail server can get stuck.

  • Speakers for the iPod running on batt, do they cut battery use in half?

I know that volume has a lot to do with battery drain on a battery radio, and I imagine it is the same with the iPod. How much drain do speakers (the kind specifically made for the iPod) cause? Do they cut the battery useful time down to 2 hours? 1 hour? before needing to be re-charged?
I'm interested, but not if they are a huge drain on battery life. How do they compare with drain caused by ear buds?
Let's say all of this would be at a moderate volume, not loud.
Thanks for any input on this,
    Ken

No one can give you a definite answer on this. Every speaker uses electricity at a different level so the only way to know is to call the manufacturer and test them out yourself. I can say that it will drain a lot of your iPod's batteries if it uses your iPods batteries in the first place. Usually speakers have a power source of its own so you can plug the speaker's adaptor to a outlet on the wall.

With all of the applications available, what other applications recommended to use along with Captivate 8.  I do not heed to install all of them, just what I need.

Personally I use both Photoshop and Audition (both in CC) a lot when using Captivate 8. There is roundtripping possible with those two Adobe applications. If you have a CC subscription try it out! And when needing HTML5 output, you can insert published Edge Animate files, to replace former Flash animations. As you can see in CP8, Edge Inspect can be used to test the output on mobile devices without having to publish or to deploy on a webserver.

  • Battery use by the APP GPS Status & Toolbox...What's Up with this APP???

    Thursday - 12/15/2011
    All,
When I turned on my phone this morning I decided to check my battery usage and what a surprise.  But first let me say that in all the time my Charge had Froyo 2.2.1 and also using GB 2.3.6 my battery usage ALWAYS had "Display" as the biggest user of the battery.  See attached Screen Shot
This morning the APP GPS Status was the biggest user of the battery even more than Display.  I did check to see if GPS Status was running and it was NOT running.  I have not even used GPS Status for several days.
What's up, does anyone know???  I hope this APP is not a stealth off spring of CarrierIQ!
    JerryF
PS,  After using the phone I re-checked battery usage about 3 hours later and Display was again the biggest user at 51% and now GPS Status is in second place at 19%.

    Richs10 and OTHERS,
I think I figured it out and it appears that GPS & Toolbox is NOT constantly running and is no longer using battery power.  It seems that once you use an APP it appears in the "Battery USE" display.  Look at settings>about phone>battery use if you want to see your Battery Use display.  Therefore, when you use an APP and it used a lot of battery juice it goes to the top of the Battery Usage list even though it is NO LONGER running.
It stays there until some other APP tops it as the biggest user or battery power or the Battery Use list is reset..
That said, go to the following URL because I found a way to reset my Battery Use display and GPS & Tool Box disappeared from my Battery Use list because it was no longer running.

PS,  NOTE TO OTHERS:  If you don't understand this, start at the beginning and read the post that started this thread.

What color is recommended to use on a black background for credits or thank yous in a video?
    Thank you for your help.

If it is not too distracting, I like to overlay the credits on a still scene that sort of sums up the whole movie....just so the credits are not overshadowed by the background. That worked well for a movie of a little league baseball game and my favorite baseball little leaguer.
Another time, for a birthday celebration for a retired very special person, I used rolling credits against just a smiling face of the birthday person with a chiming like version of happy birthday music. I kept everything light and readable with a balance between face and credits. Then as the credits ended, I eased into a thank you to him title followed by cameo shots of faces with names (about 3 cameos per image) of all the people who attended the gathering for this special person. So many times as the years go by there will be a person watching the video and asking who is that? So, my cameos were gently placed and presented and served the purpose of letting everyone know/remember who was who.
I tend to let the work direct me in all decisions in creating the credits. Probably white is the generalized answer for lettering against a black background. Just white rolling credits on black does not necessarily grab by attention. But that is a generalization that may not apply to your specific project.
    Just some thoughts.
