Reconstruct on cyrus mailbox fails

I have a Mac Mini running Server 10.5.8.  It has 12 active mailboxes, no quotas and one user mailbox indicating -1072  Several days ago the server started hanging when that user's account started accumulating repetitive connections that fail to timeout and it soon hits the connection limit haltingth email service.  After searching the Apple forums and the larger web, I suspect the user's cyrus mailbox got corrupted during a failed IMAP sync (he is at a remote location with spotty service).
So far I have tried reconstructing the sngle user's mailbox with both recommended methods:
sudo /usr/bin/cyrus/bin/reconstruct -r user/(short name)
and
sudo mailbfr -m
Both methods hang before completion at a certain folder in the user's mailbox.  Perhaps relevant is the folder count in this user's mailbox is very large (the folder it hangs on is #126 of unknown total).
All other users mailboxes are OK and the server appears to run as expected when this user's account is off.  I want to fix the one user mailbox without losing data or messing with the other user's stuff. any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Looks like I may have solved it using a combination of Pterobyte's great advice in the forum, the mailbfr tool from Topicdesk and some creative cut and paste.
1.  Stop the services.
2.  Move the offending mailbox folder to the desktop (after permission changes) didn't delete it right away in case I needed it later.
3.  Opened the hung client (offline) and copied the messages out of the offending folder to a local "On my MAC" folder.
4.  Ran mailbfr -m username again and this time it succeeded (it restored the offending folder, empty) .  Followed it up with the recommended mailbfr actions to fix the quotas and permissions.
So far it appears to be working.

  • Cyrus reconstruct on single mailbox

Can someone please provide the proper syntax for reconstructing a single mailbox (for a single user) on a 10.4.6 box? As root user, I have tried:
    su cyrusimap
    reconstruct -r user_mailbox
But Terminal does not recognize that. I get "su: reconstruct: command not found". Also tried the following while in the /var/spool/imap/user/ dir:
    ./bin/reconstruct -r /var/spool/imap/user/user_mailbox
And terminal does not give an error but immediately jumps back to the command prompt leading me to believe it did nothing.
(Trying all this to solve problem on user account where they have not received any mail via Mail.app since yesterday at 2:30. Using SM I confirmed that messages are coming in and also that the message immediately after the last message the user received in Mail appears to be corrupt/spam. SM will error out when I tried to delete so I am thinking only option is to rebuild mailbox for this user.)
    Ben

This issue is still dogging me! I managed to grep, locate and delete the message I thought was suspect, along with 3 other messages that appeared in the error below. I confirmed that those message IDs are no longer in the user's mailbox but I am still getting the error below in SM and still no new mail in the Mail.app. Soooo, it looks as though SM is still trying to pull these messages into it's query. I have rebuilt the mailbox again using SA but is there some index file that needs to be rebuilt or deleted? SM does not appear to know that these messages are gone...

  • How do you remove a deleted user's cyrus mailbox?

    Hi everyone,
I am having a little trouble with a user's account on Mac OS X 10.4.8 Server. This is a short description of what has happened.
    1. Created a user in WGM.
    2. User then sends and recieves lots of email over a long period, with no apparent issues and uses the webmail interface as well as pop3 mail application on home PC (as expected!).
    3. User uses webmail one day and discovers a server error in red writing.
    4. Semi intelligent server admin guy (me) decides to delete the user account in WGM and then re-create the user in WGM in the hope of deleting the mailbox in the process.
    5. Semi intelligent server admin guy discovers that the delete/re-create procedure doesnt remove the mailbox so he decides to search apple support forums.
Hence the reason for this post. Can anybody show me how to delete the mailbox for a user, either in GUI server admin or WGM or even terminal?
Also I have tried adding the diradmin account to the list of cyrus admins in imapd.conf so that the IMAP application can access all mailboxes but I only get read access, so I cant delete it that way, well unless I skipped a step.
    Thanks in advance,
    Kyran McGlasson

Yes, I saw that but was a tad puzzled. I see in your help file that you advise creating a new user for imap administration, but (lazy me) I just plugged my server admin into the imapd.conf file and did not create a separate user. My thinking was that the OSX Server mail manual states:
1 In Server Admin, select Mail in the Computers & Services pane.
    2 Click Settings.
3 Select the General tab and select Enable IMAP, if it is not already checked.
4 Select an existing user or create a new user using Workgroup Manger to be an IMAP
    administrator.
5 If you have not created a user record for the mail administrator’s account, see the user
    management guide.
    6 Open /etc/imapd.conf in a text editor.
If you are not comfortable using a terminal text editor like emacs or vi, you can use
    TextEdit.
7 Find the line that reads “admins:”
8 Edit the line to add the UID number of the administrator account after the colon.
    9 Save your changes.
10 In your email client application, create an account that uses IMAP to connect to your
mail service using the mail administrator name.
For more information, see the man page for imapd.conf.
And therefore I didn't think a separate user necessary. However, even using their method, I cannot connect to the folders via a client, so I gather you are correct!
So, I create a separate user, name him "imapadmin" or some such, mod the imapd.conf file accordingly, restart, and then . . . how do I give my new imapadmin the necessary permissions?
I can, by the bye, delete folders using the direct Cyrus Admin method spelled out on pterobyte's site here:
    http://downloads.topicdesk.com/docs/ProperlyDeleting_OS_X_Server_MailUsers.pdf
Thanks for the quick reply (on a Saturday!) and for crafting this very cool GUI.

  • Majority of mailboxes fail to migrate to Exchange Online, Cutover Migration from Exchange 2010

Hi, hoping someone with Office 365 migration skills might be able to help with this one:
I have about 90 mailboxes in a Cutover migration batch process which only 4 mailbox succeed.
    The rest fail with error:
MapiExceptionLogonFailed: Unable to make connection to the server. ‎(hr=0x80040111, ec=1010)‎
I've done a bunch of searches on this error and it looks to be a permissions issue. But comparing the successful mailboxes to the rest, I can't see where the issue lies.
The endpoint uses the domain\Administrator account which has Full Access to all the mailboxes and I have run the powershell command to grant Receive As to the mailbox database.
    Any ideas?
    The full error is:

    Update:
I managed to fix this by creating a new admin account in Active Directory, assigning it the Receive As permission to the datastore
    "Add-ADPermission -Identity "Mailbox Database 0383061665" -User "iif.admin" -ExtendedRights Receive-As"
Then restarted the Mailbox Assistant service (which could have also fixed it I guess, not sure).
Edited the endpoint in O365 to use the new account then reran batch process.
All accounts now appear to be syncing properly.
    Hope this helps someone.

  • NXT communication mailbox fails

    Hi everyone,
I'm working with the Mindstorms 2.0 kit and using Labview 2009 SP1. I'm trying to get a message from my computer to the next using the mailbox VI. I've connected the NXT using USB. Now I'm trying the color sensor demo downloaded from here:
    http://decibel.ni.com/content/docs/DOC-11109
Now I've uploaded NXT_Client using the NXT [USB] instance. It says its 'running'. Now I load the PC_Host, switch back to Main Application Instance, and run. Then PC_Host gives me the message below.
Now I'm not sure why it says this, since the NXT_client is running.
It does however seems to work somewhat!? It gives me the right color, it just displays this error in every iteration of the loop.
I tried starting the NXT Shell, however, that just displays <0> when I run the PC_Host, and if I run the NXT_Client after the NXT Shell it just replaces it...
I'm not sure how this should work, but I'm not getting it to work. Anyone has any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
    Regards,
    Vincent

I have futher looked into this problem.
To me, it seems there is a bug in the labview VI's. During the program it will run into 'BlueTooth_Write_String.vi'. (Even though I'm communicating through USB... however, this doesn't seem to be an error). Which in turn invokes SendCmdToDebug.vi.
Now, send SendCmdToDebug has 'Request Reply' boolean, which is True by default. As you can see in the diagram True means also then checks for whether or not the NXTShell is running, and give an error if it isn't! Now it is unwired in  BT_Write_String, meaning it always checks whether or not NXTShell is running. But its not! my own program is trying to receive the command.
Did anyone else experience this problem? Is it not a bug? Please let me know.
    Regards,
    Vincent

  • Migration from Exchange 2007 to 2013 gives error "Failed to communicate with the mailbox database'

I have been trying to migrate several databases from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013. The migration started successfully, and many of the mailboxes moved successfully (about 70). The remaining mailboxes, failed. Looking deeper, we found a few issues; The

All of the issues listed above have been corrected, and all of the databases are mounted. Users are able to send and receive mail, but I can not migrate mail using the Migration Batch utility.
The destination server is a Hyper-V Guest running Server 2012, SP1, and Exchange 2013
The Source Server is Running Exchange 2007.
I have tried doing a test move to another destination server that is also Server 2012, and Exchange 2013, and the migration also failed.
I would appreciate any help you can give me!
    Thanks,
    Jon

Any update if you have resolved the issue.
Not similar, but this thread can be helpful while you migrate the mailboxes from exchange 2007 to 2013. • Single Mailbox Move to 2013 Fails with Job Hasnt Made Progress Since Error

I migrated from 2010 to 2013 and only one mailbox fails to move.  I can move it within the 2010 mailbox databases but I cannot get it to migrate to a 2013 database.  The migration takes a loong time to move the 500MB mailbox and eventually will
fail with an error stating the following
"This job hasn't made progress since {date / time}.  I have tried to move it several times and it fails with the same error each time.  All other mailboxes in the entire environment have been successful with no issues.  I moved it to
another 2010 mailbox database with no issues but the 2013 move failed again afterwards.
Any ideas what the issue could be?

thanks for the idea.  I ran it and got the info below.  That error seems interesting.  I looked it up and found this:  https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/exchange/en-US/5da9b81d-8665-4476-954c-98d1a8418ab1/exchange-2013-mailbox-newmoverequest-from-exchange-2007-sp3-transient-error-invalid-parent-folder?forum=exchangesvradmin
Deleted that and re-running the migration to see if it fixed it.

  • Warning: Failed to clean up the source mailbox after the move

    Hi!
After moving a mailbox between databases (EMC or EMS), there is a warning: Warning: Failed to clean up the source mailbox after the move. Erro details: MapiExceptionUnexpectedMailboxState: Unable to delete mailbox. (hr=0x80004005, ec=2634).
Users can successfully access mailboxes, but these mailboxes stay in disconected mailbox node on EMC, and it is shown on EMS afer command [PS] C:\> Get-MailboxDatabase | Get-MailboxStatistics | where {$_.DisconnectReason -ne $null} and their databases are
    the old ones.
We have recently upgraded from SP2 to SP2 RU4, but we´re not sure when this problem started.
    Our Environment:
    Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1
Windows Roles: File Services, Web Server (IIS)
Exchange Server 14.02.0318.001 (Build 247.5) Roles MBX, DAG with one more MBX identical Server
Antivirus: Forefront Endpoint Protection Version: 2.1.1116.0
    Virtualization: Yes – Hyper-V
Applications: Backup Agent CA, SCCM Agent, SCOM Agent, HP Management Tools
    Any idea?
    Thankyou in advance!
    Fabio Martins MCDST/MCSA Brasil!!!

I recently upgraded our Exchange 2010 servers (CAS/HUB and MBX) from SP1 to SP3 RU6 and now I'm encountering this issue when doing mailbox moves. I opened a support case with Microsoft and it appears that they are aware that SP 3 RU1 doesn't fix
the issue in all cases. Below is the response I received from the support engineer.
    =====
Based on my research and case experience, we have several customers report that even if they are running Exchange 2010 SP3 RU1 or later version(for example, one of customer is running Exchange 2010 SP3 RU4 and another is also in CU6 environment), they also
have such issue. When they move mailbox, it completed with warning message that source mailbox can’t be cleaned up after the mailbox move operation. This issue occurs because the Mailbox Replication service does not check a certain flag when you move the mailbox.
Additionally, a move process for a mailbox that fails takes 30 seconds by default. When a move process for a mailbox fails, the Mailbox Replication service tries five more times to move the mailbox. Therefore, there is a 2.5 minute delay for each mailbox move
process when you move many mailboxes at the same time.
Currently, the workaround is to remove the “SoftDeleted” mailboxes manually after move the mailbox using the command you shared to us.
    ==========================================
    1.    List all disconnected mailboxes in a database and display DisconnectReason if its SoftDeleted or Disabled
    Get-MailboxStatistics -Database "DB9" | Where-Object {$_.DisconnectDate -Notlike $NULL} | Format-Table DisplayName, DisconnectDate, MailboxGuid, DisconnectReason –Wrap
    2.    Remove a specific softdeleted mailbox
Remove-StoreMailbox -database “DB9” -identity “User Alias here” -MailboxState SoftDeleted
    ==========================================
And as I know, it has no impact on the mailbox usage, so we can ignore the warning message currently. Please rest assured that once we got more information about the issue, we will inform you ASAP.

  • Recreate user account in Workgroup Manager, empty mailbox

We have OS X 10.3.8 Server version. Postfix mail server.
We have a user/account with email problems and a huge mailbox. He (user: gordon) had over 16000 emails in his mailbox (/var/spool/imap/user/gordon). All other mail users on this server work fine, including newly created user accounts.
Our solutions was to try and delete all mail from his mailbox via Terminal. This did not seem to decrease the size of his mailbox. Our next idea was to delete this user in Workgroup Manager and then re-created this user. Hoping to created an new mail setup and empty mailbox. This idea failed aswell.
How does one basically purge an old account/user in Workgroup Manager, and then, recreate that same user name and effectively recreate the user with a new account, including a new/empty mailbox?
      Mac OS X (10.3.8)

cyradm is not part of 10.3.x
To use it you would have to install it first. See here:
    http://www.afp548.com/article.php?story=20040814204411280&query=cyradm
And then follow the instructions given beforehand.
Having said that, your issue can be resolved differently. You deleted all mail manually in the file system (not a good idea, but what is done is done). So the mail is actually gone. What you are seing is Cyrus' index. Since you deleted manually the index didn't get updated. To get rid of the problem either reconstruct that users mailbox throgh Server Admin - > Mail or alternatively run:
    sudo -u cyrus reconstruct -r user/gordon (assuming that's the user's name)

  • Mail / Cyrus Config Error -- Please help!

Dang, I have yet to get an answer on anything through this site!!!
Setting up Leopard Server 10.5. Have core services all running successfully, but stumbling on e-mail.
Machine is broadway.local. Main domain is dsop.com, but I don't think that is major issue here. (It is config'd as a virtual domain and users can login.)
Through POP or IMAP, users can authenticate. But they cannot access mail. As example, IMAP log shows...

If I switch to draft, I can compose a message and logs show that it is sending. (I am waiting on someone (anyone) to call to tell me they got it!)
Start/stop of mail, as well as reboot of server, have not helped.
I have limited UNIX knowledge, though I am in IT by trade. So take the middle road on tech explanations, please. I can temporarily be reached at [email protected]
    Any ideas?

Though I can't say that this is your issue, but I would check the permissions on the folders. The _cyrus user should be the owner of all the folders inside the "user" folder.
I would also try to do a complete reconstruct on the mailboxes. You can either use.
mailbfr: found at the link below.
    http://osx.topicdesk.com/content/view/41/41/
Or you can attempt to use this:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107996
But modify the user name cyrusimap with _cyrus.
reconstructing mailboxes should create the cyrus.header and other cyrus.* files in the mailbox folders.
I find that mailbfr works pretty good and they say it has support for 10.5

  • Broken mailbox - 10.4.6 server

    Hi
One of my users had a broken mailbox, so I tried to Reconstruct it in Server Admin. This appeared to do nothing at all! I also tried running reconstruct from the command-line in Terminal (/usr/bin/cyrus/bin/reconstruct daxxxx) but this didn't appear to do anything either!
As the user hadn't too many new messages in the mailbox, he was quite happy for me to delete and recreate the user account. The bad news is that although the user account in Workgroup Manager was deleted, the mailbox account was not. So when I added a new user with the same name (so as not to have to change the email address), this simply picked up the old broken mailbox! (This one wouldn't reconstruct either).
The end result is that I have had to set up a totally different user account and forward the email from the original account to this one. Whilst this works, it's not the solution I wanted.
What could I have done to either reconstruct the original mailbox properly or completely deleted and re-instated the user account?
Thanks for your help on this one.
    Richard.
PS the instructions for recreating the mailboxes on 10.3 server is said in the documentation not to work on 10.4 server, so I didn't try them, although I have used them in the past on 10.3 server.

Thanks for the advice. It's taken me a while to get back to this one.
The single sheet PDF by Ben Masters proved to be the most useful advice, although I had to make some changes in order to delete the broken mailbox.
First, I had to Stop and Start Mail in order to get the admin change in /etc/imapd.conf to take effect.
Second, where the original document gave user/testuser in the cyradm commands, I had to substitute 'Other Users'/testuser. This is because the lm command results showed as
    Other Users/testuser
    Other Users/testuser1
    and so on.
Third, the sam and dm commands wouldn't work because the permissions on the items in the broken mailbox were set as 600. Once I did a chmod to 777 the sam and dm commands worked properly and I was finally rid of the broken mailbox.
I hope that other visitors here may find these comments helpful.

  • Reconstruct problem

    Hi all,
I'm having problems with reconstruct. In many mailboxes, when I execute it, the command does not make anything. For example:
    sh-3.2# /usr/bin/cyrus/bin/reconstruct -r -f user/userdomaines
but with other mailboxes, the reconstruct works fine. For example:
    sh-3.2# /usr/bin/cyrus/bin/reconstruct -r -f user/userdomaincom
    user/userdomaincom
    user/userdomaincom/Anteriores
    user/userdomaincom/Borradores
    user/userdomaincom/Enviados
    user/userdomaincom/Papelera
    user/userdomaincom/SPAM
    user/userdomaincom/sent-mail
What's the problem? Maybe I have the cyrus database corrupted?
    Thanks for all,
    Álvaro

    Hi,
Previously, I used the following sintax:
    sh-3.2# /usr/bin/cyrus/bin/reconstruct -r -f user/userdomaines
but with some mailboxes, the command dont make anything, maybe because the mailbox isnt in the Cyrus DB, but with that command it was added to the Cyrus DB, is that correct? I think so.
Now, I've need to use the following sintax:
    sh-3.2# /usr/bin/cyrus/bin/reconstruct -r -f *-p defaul*t user/userdomaines
I dont know why, but the reconstruct said me that discovered a new mailbox with its directories....
I think that -f option not work propertly. With -p option, reconstruct forgets the mailboxes created in Cyrus DB and add new ones in the directory that you specify, in this case the "default mailstore location" and then make the reconstruct.
I dont know ... but works fine :s., and for that reason, I'd like an rasonable explanation
    Thanks.

  • Cyradm and cyrus-quota problems

I've been getting a cyrus-quota crash every night for a while. Here's part of the crash report:
    +Process: cyrus-quota [28870]+
    +Path: /usr/bin/cyrus/bin/cyrus-quota+
    +Identifier: cyrus-quota+

    +2 cyrus-quota 0x00001ee6 start 54+
I'm thinking it's a problem with one of the cyrus mailboxes being corrupted. I've tried stopping the Mail services and issuing:
    *sudo -u cyrusimap /usr/bin/cyrus/bin/cyrus-quota -f*
    *sudo -u cyrusimap /usr/bin/cyrus/bin/ctl_cyrusdb -r*
    *sudo /usr/bin/cyrus/bin/reconstruct*
But the crashes persist. I wanted to go in with cyradm and weed out unnecessary mailboxes to see if that helps, but I'm unable to login with the cyradm tool:
    *cd /usr/bin/cyrus/admin/*
    *./cyradm -user cyrusimap localhost*
    Password:
*cyradm: cannot authenticate to server with as cyrusimap*
I've tried setting the password for the cyrusimap user, using *passwd cyrusimap*, thinking it might be an authentication problem, but I still can't login. I read usually cyrus uses sasl to check passwords, but there's no mention of saslpwcheckmethod in /etc/imapd.conf. Does OS X handle passwords differently?
Any help on using cyradm or with cyrus-quota crashes?

Ok, I seemed to have resolved this in my case.
The crash appears (for me atleast) to have been caused by mailboxes in the mail store that did NOT have a quota set.
If you execute 'sudo -u _cyrus /usr/bin/cyrus/bin/cyrus-quota it will list quotas on all mailboxes. Look down the list of users which should be something like this: -
    Quota %Used Used Root
    10240 65 6726 user/fred
    10240 0 0 user/bert
    0 15684 user/ernie
In the example above, ernie has no quota set. This seems to cause the 'cyrus-quota -q' crash (maybe a bug where a 'null' value is causing cyrus-quota to bomb-out?).
I resolved it by setting a quota for EVERY user, reconstructing the cyrus db and then fixing quotas via the following steps (please note this is for 10.5 Server only and will not work on earlier versions). Make sure you have a backup of everything first.
1 - Open WGM and ensure ALL users have a quota (I set a high number for those who dont actually need to be quota'd eg. 2gb) Apply changes and quit.
2 - Stop Mail service in server admin
open a Terminal and issue the following commands:
    3 - sudo mv /var/imap /var/imap.old
    4 - sudo mkdir /var/imap
    5 - sudo /usr/bin/cyrus/tools/mkimap
    6 - sudo chown -R _cyrus:mail /var/imap
    7 - sudo /usr/bin/cyrus/bin/reconstruct -i
    8 - sudo -u _cyrus /usr/bin/cyrus/bin/cyrus-quota -f
9 - check all accounts listed have THREE numbers beside them, Quota, Used% and Used.
10 - test it with sudo -u _cyrus /usr/bin/cyrus/bin/cyrus-quota -q (if all is well it will just return a prompt with no error messages).
11 - Start the mail service back up in Server Admin and test thoroughly.
N.B. For me, I HAD to rebuild the database first (Steps 3 - 7), you MAY be able to skip these steps which would preserve the seen-state of your users email.
    Good luck.
