Recording directly to external hard drive.

So i have an external hard drive (with fire wire 800) plugged into my laptop and then i plug the camera into the external to record directly onto the hard drive instead of recording to my laptop.  the camera ejects the external and forces me to have to record onto the laptop.  how do i bypass this in order to record onto the external hard drive?

Even if the camera allowed you to connect directly to the external, that would be inadvisable because the data stream would have to travel both directions on the cable between the external and the computer: from the external to the computer to get to OL, then back again to be recorded. FireWire is not designed for such bidirectional data transfer. This configuration will likely produce latency of up to 2 seconds and can even result in dropped frames.
So the recommended configuration is to connect both the camera and the external drive to Firewire ports, ideally on separate IEEE1394 busses. Then, in order to record to the external, simply create your OnLocation project on the external drive.

  • Downloading photos directly to external hard drive.

I was wondering: Is there any way of downloading photos from camera using iPhoto directly to external hard drive, similar to the way you can do it with iMovie files.

Mount the camera ot the desktop and drag the photos to disk - or use image capture (in your applications folder) - in the Image Capture preferences (or the iPhoto preferences) you can select the action to be taken when a comera is connected

  • I want to record video using iphone5 but save direct to external hard drive

I want to film an interview and for convenience I want to use my iphone5.
But I only currently only have enough space on the phone to store a few minutes of video on my camera roll
Can I somehow plug in an external hard drive or any other device and save direct to this (by-passing the phones' internal memory) so I can use the phone's camera to record over an hour's worth of video?
    Thanks

Well, I am not aware of any smartphone device that is able to attach an external drive. I am aware of some that allow for the insertion of memory sticks, but I'm not sure that would provide you with the memory you would need for the project you are trying to do. And with them, you would have to see if it is possible to bypass internal memory and go straight to the external.

  • How do I record to a external hard drive?

I want to record my projects to an external firewire hard drive, but I can't seem to find the option in the preferences?

There is no "option" per se. When you start recording audio in Logic, it will ask you to set your record path. .. from there, just as you would find a file to attach to an e-mail, find your external hard drive and direct the audio to there. Also in the File menu in Logic, you have the option to save your session as a "project." That will consolidate all of your audio (and samples if you wish) into one folder along w/ your session file, and you can go to "save as" and choose to send everything to your external hard drive. Just think "email attachment." Its that easy.

  • How can I change the source file so it is direct from external hard drive?

I am trying to make a movie on imovie of a snowboarding trip that I went on, there is around 80 to 100 gig of mp4 movies that will not fit on my computer that I have stored on my external harddrive. I had the movie half finished then found I could do no more as I had no space left in my mac. I had to delete everything and start again but I'm not doing this until I can find a way of changing the source file so I can take them direct from my external hard drive as to not use up all my computers available space. I have moved imovie to my external hard drive but it still tries to read from a movie file on my mac, how can I change that so it will read from a source file on my external hard drive, is it possible?? Can someone help me??

Hi Bengt, Thanks for your input, much appreciated.
I have a WD 1TIG hard drive and are using usb connection, is it possible to use fire wire with these? I have had trouble with a lot of the videos I Imported, once they downloaded the file in the viewer window showed up blank and when I mouse over them it places a picture of another file in the window and wont drag and drop into the movie window, like their corrupted or something? Had to delete just about all of them and start again. Also is it possible to select a bunch of videos in the viewer window as to change the dates to the correct dates? All I have been able to do is "select all" which is no help.

  • Can I back up ipod touch directly to external hard drive - bypass using computer?

I am trying to figure out if it is possible to back up my ipod touch to an external hard drive directly.  I know it is possible connecting the external to the computer and doing the simple drag and drop but would rather just by pass connecting to the computer and use the ipod directly.  If it is possible, any suggestions?

I am trying to figure out if it is possible to back up my ipod touch to an external hard drive directly.
    it isn't.
but you can back up the "backup folder" to an external. you will find the location of it in this support article -> About Backups

  • Set up to save directly to external Hard Drive so cannot have separate 'back up'I now want to reverse i.e save to internal Hard Drive and 'back up' on external 'hard Drive'. Please advise me how to do this.

Macbook Air 13 inch purchased October 2013. set up to save [mainly photos] to external 'hard drive' i.e. not saved to internal hard drive. Cannot find easy way to create 'back up'. Please advise how I can reverse i.e save directly to internal 'hard drive' and 'back up on external 'hard drive'

For backing up your data I recommend that you use Time machine:

When you import images or create other data files, file them in the appropriate places on your internal drive, don't delete them and let Time machine back them up.

  • Trouble importing movie directly to external hard drive

I have an externall hard drive that I purchased for the purpose of starting an iMovie project on it and then importing movies directly from my camera onto it (via my iMac). I have read on the discussion boards that other people are able to do this. When I try to do it, the movie stutters and has gaps.
I traded out fire wires in case it was that. I also erased the external hard drive and that didn't help either.
The hard drive is an OWC with 400 fire wire on it. Any ideas of what would cause this problem?
    Thank you in advance.

I have a canon zr 50, which worked fine before the upgrade to tiger and imovie HD, since the upgrade this camera no longrer works or is supported? http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/camcorders.html the zr 40, and 45 are supported which are the same camera but the top of the line zr 50 which only adds an accesory shoe is not. This camera is not old by any standards and barely has a scratch on it and Apple wants me to buy a new camera just so it is supported? What gives?

  • Back up photos and video directly to external hard drive?

I need to back up my photos and video from my iPhone 3GS to my external hard drive, not iPhoto on my Mac because I don't have much space left on my computer. I really can't back up to my computer and then transfer it all to the hard drive. Is there a way to do this? If so, could you please be specific with directions and settings? Greatly appreciated!

    No.
Photos and videos in your iPhone's camera roll must be imported by an application on your computer as with any other digital camera.
If your computer's hard drive is that low on available storage capacity, you need to move other data to an external hard drive.
You can store your iTunes library and your iPhoto library on an external drive along with any data that you don't access very often. You computer's hats drive should have about 10% free.
Or invest in a new internal drive with much greater storage capacity.

  • Cannot open image direct from external hard drive in Elements 9

I have recently upgraded from Elements 8 to 9 and when I search for an image in my external hard drive (where all my photos are stored!) I used to be able to double click on it and it opened in E8. When I try this in E9 I get a message: 'Photo image on hard drive 2671Jpg is not a valid win 32 application' and I cannot access my photo. Even if I right-click to 'Open with Elements 9', I get the same message.
    How do i fix this?

    Hi
    Thanks for your suggestion.
However , right clicking opens PSE 9 (not editor) and this does not work.
Get the same message each time.

  • Recording onto external hard drives

I have been having trouble recording guitar with direct input. (I am probably getting the apogee one soon) The sound is in perfect time when I record it but when I play it back it is off time, and needs to be nudged to sound correct again. I have also been recording onto an external hard drive lately, will this effect the problem in any way? Do any of you record onto external drives or do you use the computers built in hard drive?

Sorry for the miss communication, the off timing occurs when I record onto my macbook pros internal hard drive (and that was with garageband but I am now using logic express). I don't know what the rotational speed is, but I have three external hard drives, is there a way to tell? Do you record onto an external drive or the built in drive?
    Thanks, Jv-

  • Recording on garageband with an external hard drive?

Hey guys I heard someone mention something about recording onto an external hard drive, can someone explain everything I need to know about this? including the benefits, reasons for, and cons of doing it? I'm pretty confused about it all
    Thanks a lot.
    Btw, I have a laCie 500gb drive

assuming it's a fast (7200 rpm drive in a FireWire case), it may allow you to record more audio tracks. laptops, for instance, typically have slow (5400 RPM) drives, reducing the useable bandwidth. even a fast drive in a desktop could get bogged down by other processes.

    you have to buy something.
i'll add an implied "how do i use it?"
create a project on, or move a project to, that drive, that's it.

  • External Hard drives

I didn't see any forum that was directed toward external hard drives...
Im looking to get either a Seagate 1TB external hard drive or a Western Digital 1TB hard drive. I currently have a 500 GB seagate HD but I need more space for back up. Any suggestions on which is better between Seagate and Western Digital?

Personally, of the two, I've found the Seagates to be the more reliable, Chester.
My other strong recommendation would be that you get one which is firewire capable , rather than simply USB.
But don't stick with those two brands. Have a look at http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/ and http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/owc-neptune-drives/ for example.
The OWC mercurys , in particular, are used by many of the long term Mac people here and have a very good reputation. The Neptune's make use of a good chipset in their "bridge" and are very good value for money compared to other drives of similar or lesser quality. They are at least on a par with the external offerings from some of the "name" manufacturers.
But whatever you get , get firewire. The transfer rates, even with FW400, are close to twice as fast as those you will achieve over USB when connected to an iMac G5.
    Cheers

  • TS3834 External Hard Drive

I am currently using a Mac Book that has only (2) USB ports.  Is it worth it to record to an external hard drive, given my limited interface choices?  I am just doing some home recording projects that require recording one track at a time, but I am playing back 12 or so on a typical project.
    Thanks,

If you are streaming audio then you need something faster than a USB drive such as a Firewire 800 port. If you have a MacBook rather than a MacBook Pro, then you probably do not have a Firewire port. You will likely find the results will be better recording to your hard drive, then copying the files to an external drive for storage.

  • Jumbled Logic Files on External Hard Drive

    Hi all,
I have been very nervous to record to my external hard drive lately, because I will do a project, save all the tracks and the project file to my external drive, and occasionally when I go back to re-open the project, there is a different sound clip where another clip was supposed to be.
Even stranger, when I go to my external drive and browse the files, I can pinpoint the file that has changed, and when I single-click on the file, the name suddenly changes to a different file when it becomes highlighted! If I start clicking around on the files in the finder they just get all jumbled up.
I know that all the files are still there, but it seems to be confusing what or where they are.
Even stranger yet, this happened to me on both a PowerMac G4 and a new MacBook AND it happened on TWO different external drives!
The drives were a Maxtor 7200rpm 80gig drive and a newer Western Digital MyBook 250 Gig drive. I thought the new HD would surely solve the problem, but it still happens with some projects!
Has anyone ever heard of this or anything like it? I have been recording to the internal drive lately out of fear of mixing up files!

Did you check the drives with Disk Utility and make sure they are formatted as Mac OS (extended)? Do you receive any odd messages when you run the utility?
Also, if you have Disk Warrior, run it. There may be some VIB/directory issues, although it seems unlikely that that it would happen on two different drives.
Have you added any 3rd. party utilities, hacks, or other gadgets around the time the problems started?
