Recording realtime automation in GB 10.0.3

Hi,
Does GB record automation in realtime? - I am a guitarist and using an Apogee GiO with expression pedal I am able to play in GB using all the MIDI functions of the GiO including the expression pedal which is used for Wah and Whammy pedals etc - This all works perfectly and I can hear and see the pedals movements in Pedalboard and in Smart controls.
However, while I record a track I continue to see and hear the Wah pedal movements etc BUT when I replay the recording NONE of these movements are heard and NONE are shown in the Automation line (it is just a straight line over the audio).
The use of Wah and Whammy pedals is such an important and personal style unique to each player that I cannot beleive that Apple expect you to put these movements in manually - I would imagine it would be the same for Keyboard players using Mod wheels etc ...
The MIDI info is getting to GB as I can see and hear the Wah/whammy pedals working along with the pedals On/Off functions and the GB transport controls all work. It´s just when recording these changes are not captured.
Have I missed something obvious?
Many thanks
Mike

Mike, you have to make a very important distinction between "recording Track Automation" and "recording MIDI Events"
Track Automation
When you record track automation online (yes Logic can do that), you move the onscreen controller (Fader, Knob, etc) on your DAW, or use an external controller (Control Surface) to remotely move those onscreen controller. What is record are so-called "Fader Events". You can also create those Fader Events offline, by manually drawing those Automation Control Points (which are the representation of those Fader Events).
MID Recording
When you use a MIDI Controller, you record its MIDI signals as individual MIDI Events in GarageBand (or Logic). These MIDI Events are the notes you play on the keyboard or any controller (PitchWheel, ModWheel, etc) on a MIDI Keyboard. The important thing is that these are all MIDI Events that you can edit in the Piano Roll. When looking, for example, in the MIDI Draw Area of the Piano Roll Editor, you can see the MIDI Events for the ModWheel (CC#1). Although they look like automation at a (Control Points creating a continuous curve)., these are just MIDI Events
Here is a screenshot of GarageBand that shows Track Automation and MIDI Recording, both look like "automation", but they are different.
Attention
Many Control Surfaces use MIDI as the protocol to send and receive data. This could lead to some confusion. Although you would send a MIDI signal from your controller to the GarageBand/Logic, you are not recording that MIDI signal. That signal is only used to remotely move specific onscreen controls in GarageBand/Logic. Only the Fader Events related to specific controls (and even controls on the Smart Controls) are recorded in the Track Automation and visible as an Automation Curve on the Track Lane.
I hope that explanation is not too complicated/confusing. I explain all that in great detail with lots of graphics in my manuals "GarageBand X - How it Works" and "Logic Pro X - How it Works".
Hope that helps

  • Possible to record solo automation from a MIDI controller?

I am using a Novation SL MKII midi controller with Automap in Logic Pro 9.  I am trying to figure out how to record the solo automation feature from the MIDI input.  I select the track, and then select the 'Solo' section from the automation tools.  I then select Touch or Latch. (I've tried both)  When I push the MIDI button I can see that it does change the state of the track from solo on/off successfully, so the input is working fine.  But as I try to record it, nothing happens, no information about the state change is actually recorded.
Here's the strangest part, it works fine when I record mute automation... but not solo.  Any common reason this is occurring?

Well, I don't know much about the kit you are using, but I do kow a bit about the midisport as I use one for my live setup. It should appear in the environment under clicks and ports. As for start and stop, although I have never tried this, I imagine it's possible through key command setup. Here you ought to be able to select play, learn the asignment and press the button. I'm not certain that this will work, and I'm pretty sure that some transport items won't work (like RTZ) but surely it should work. All I can say is give it a try!
If any of this doesn't make sense, I suggest a read of the manual about key commands. They are part of what makes Logic so powerful, and you should note that Logic has some functions not available any other way that are very powerful. Equally, if you want to start having fun with MIDI, a readup on the environment will help too. Ah, the possibilities are almost endless...
Any qs on it, don't hesitate to post back. I hop these pointers might help you on your way,
    Best, Fred

  • Automation Record Problem

    Hi all,
I've got a strange problem with Logic not recording any automation coming from external controllers. I'm putting the track in question into "Touch" mode and the controller is altering the sound exactly as expected, but there is no automtion recorded. Am I missing something? it was working fine before I upgraded to 7. Thanks in advance.
    Using Logic 7.1

    Hi,
u might like to check out this Environment. It lets u convert CC to Trackautomation Events. This enabels you to record external CC´s to Logics Track Automation. And NO its no bug.
External/internal midi CCs to track automation
miditrackauto.lso.sit — a simple example of an environment workaround for recording external (synth modwheel etc) or internal (environment faders) midi CCs to track automation for midi instruments.

  • How DO I record AUTOMATION, e.g. Absynth 4 Performance Pane?

Okay, so I am coming from Nuendo, and in the Steinberg world, you hit record then move anything on any instrument and it records it, plain and simple.
How do I do the same for Logic?
Right now, I recorded a few notes in Absynth and in the Perform PANE there are many CC controls that you can move - basically, I want to record them in real time and play them back.
How is this done in logic?
    Thanks

Turn Automation view on in Logic's local "view" menue - set your track to latch in the track header's automation menue - hit record - move the sliders in Absynth - this will be recorded into Automation event lists. Very easy and straight forward.
If your Macros are assigned to Midi Controllers you can record those Midi Controller events onto the Absynth track also by just hitting record, a new Region will be recorded containing only Midi Controller events as soon as you you move your Midi Controllers.
If you want to draw in Automation nodes into one of the Absynth parameters choose a parameter from the Automation menue in the trackheader and draw in the nodes with your mouse.

  • Smooth automation recording option with Virus TI ???

    Hello.
Im using Virus TI with logic 8 .
For example when i record cutoff automation , it will write the automation step by step , and not a cruve as it should i don't know if i make myself clear . If i turn the know from down to up in a regular way , it will record the automation step and not a curve , so it means i have to re write automation because when i playback it doesnt sound the same .
So is there an option that allows to smooth automation recording so when i record it will show a curve and not one dot every step of the automation ???
By the way i also use a novation remote midi controller and i don't have this issue with it , this happens only with the Virus TI plugin.
omg i hope someone understands and has a solution .

Yeah that's a known problem with some 3rd party plugins. Assign the different sounds to different Outputs/Auxes instead, and write your Automation into the Auxes.

  • Controller assignments(axiom49) automating mutes assignments get scrambled up?

i have an axiom 49...so when I am in the arrange or mixer window, I hit Apple+L for learn mode.  I want to be able to record mute automation realtime using my keyboard as the controller. So I select the mute on track one, the hit(for example) a white key. then go on down the line of tracks and assingn them side by side on my keyboard.  so that each key represents the mute of each sequential track...but when i exit the window, like the first 4 or 5 tracks no longer respond and the tracks that do respond, are responding to the wrong keys...like everything got shifted over?  does any body have any help on this issue?

    Hi Mike,
Have you set the right MIDI channels for the tracks in the inspector? Or are they still set to 'all' (default)?
Deleting the .cs means deleting your control surfaces settings (cs stands for control surfaces).
Also make sure that no CC's are filtered out. See File>Project Settings>Midi>Input Filter.
    regards, Erik.

  • A better way to make Automator mount a volume?

I made an Automator application, using the Record function, to mount a volume on a drive connected to my Mini. I also made a similar one to eject it. I use them as Calendar-triggered events as part of my backup scheme.
They work well ... until I restart the Mini, when occasionally my two connected drives will mount in a different order. What happens then is that the sequence of mouse clicks recorded in Automator don’t find the correct volume.
I wonder if there’s a better way to automate the mounting of a currently ejected disc (and later its ejection). Automator, as far as I can see, does not have the actions I need. It has Ask For/Connect to/Get specified Servers, but they seem only to be for network-connected stuff.
    Anyone know a better way?

    Welcome to Unix.
The key part of that shell script code is the test for the existence of the mount point (if [ -e /Volumes/dbamp ]), followed by a conditional block that — in the "else" section involved when the mount point wasn't found — creates it, and then mounts an AFP file system on that mount point.  Most of the rest of the baggage in that script is used to get the mysqldump database dumps over onto the target disk, once it's been mounted.
Here's a very quick overview of the basics of scripting , Apple's introduction to the command line manual, there's a generic bash intro (which is good, but doesn't line up exactly with how bash is implemented on OS X) and O'Reilly has some reasonable books on bash and bash scripting.  Once you know and are comfortable with the basics, there are advanced bash guides available.

  • Recording fios tv to DVD recorder with tivo/fios cablecard

ok this post is for my dad....and if ur thinking why the hack does he want a dvd recorder when they already have a tivo...don't ask my dad is kinda weird he still "tapes" shows on VHS tapes using vcr, and tapes radio shows on cassettes....then again he also still pyas his bills with a pen, a check and the us postal service.....
anyway, I didn't know much about the world of dvd recorders before a couple days ago, so I have a few questions before and if I actually decide to get him one.
Question 1: we currently have an HD TV with an HD tivo connected and a multistream verizon fios cablecard. My question is regarding copyright limitations....what prevents you from just recording any tv program onto dvd, as you still can onto a VHS? and what percentage of the channels/shows have this protection? like would he only be able to record from the original 12 or so broadcast channels? this is my main concern....he watched a lot of the sports channels like espn espn2 golf channel nbatv etc....
Question 2: also, when doing my research I thought of another benefit a dvd recorder may have. I have been putting all the family home videos which are on vhs onto dvd, but it's a bit of a process. I use an external usb capture device made by Hauppage hooked up to the VCR then the computer captures it realtime and generates an mpeg video file on my hard drive, THEN I have to spend the 1 or 2 hours it takes to convert to DVD format and burn with Nero so it can be played on a regular DVD player......so....question being....
can a standalone DVD recorder hook up to a VCR to transfer video direct to a DVD, or do you have to buy a DVD recorder with a built in VHS deck?
Question 3: oh and someone once told me that you can only play the recorded DVD's on the recorder, and not other regular DVD players...I couldn't believe this was actually true...but was he right?
    TIA!

    Answers:
Question 1: if the DVD recorder is connected to the TIVO there shouldn't be anything prohibiting him from recording. The signal sent out from the TIVO is an unencrypted feed that can be processed by anything (TV, VCR, DVD recorder, ETC). As long as theres no restrictions within the DVD recorder itself, you should be fine to record anything. This also means you have to record realtime (press play on TIVO and record on the DVD recorder and wait the amount of time for the event to end before pressing stop)
Question 2: You would need to talk to the tech support for your DVD recorder. Its going to depend on what types of video streams and formats it will accept as a source
Question 3nce again this is a question for the DVD recorder tech support, not Verizon. It depends on the file format that the recorder saevs the file as. Not only that, but different players also can read different formats. So you have to take a look at the recorder and the dvd play back device

  • How do I create text with Automator

I am trying to create a very simple macro, or text substation. I would like to hit 5 on my keyboard, and have a long text message appear, like a signature line at the end of an email. When I use record in Automator, it works. However, I cannot get the macro itself to execute.
Thanks in advance for your help.

AppleScripts do not, typically, trigger based on arbitrary events (such as a keypress), so there's no direct way to invoke your script in the way you describe.
(notwithstanding, of course, that your proposal would prevent you from ever typing '5' again).
If you want simple text substitution then check Keyboard preferences (System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Text) and create a new shortcut that the OS will automatically replace with a block of text.
If you want more involved actions then you may need some external app such as Keyboard Maestro or QuicKeys, both of which can perform actions based on specific keystrokes.

  • Recorded action (in word:mac 2008) not working

Hello. Here's what I do: I create a new workflow in Automator (cmd-N) and choose 'Custom' as starting point. Then, I open a .doc (from word:mac 2008), then start recording, back to the .doc click somewhere into the open .doc window), click into a footnote, press cmd-A (selects all footnotes), choose Convert to Endnote from the contextual menu, save and close. (What I get is an action with three blank steps, namely step 1, 2, and 4. 1 would be clicking into the .doc window, 2 clicking into the footnote. 3 is: Press cmd-A. 4 is blank again, and I am clueless about what this one might be. 5 is Convert to Endnote, etc.)
I rename the action, and save it as an application. Then I drop the same file who's copy I used to record the action onto that application. In the menu bar (top of my screen), it says 'Watch me Do' for a little while (red octagon next to it), then disppears. I open this file I had dropped on the app, it's unchanged.
Appears to me I'm missing something so fundamental it's not covered by tutorials. Any advise? Thanks a lot.

    that works, thanks.
Each action consists of two parts: one that starts with ––, then names the action (blank if no name for this step appears in automator), and the second that entails the description of the action itself.
I record the sequence again, leaving out the first click into the .doc, clicking into the footnote straight. Then I highlight all actions recorded by automator, copy, and paste into Script Editor. This is what I get:
    delay 1.727666
    set timeoutSeconds to 2.000000
set uiScript to "click UI Element \"Document Pane\" of window 2 of application process \"Word\""
    my doWithTimeout( uiScript, timeoutSeconds )
    delay 1.815997
    set timeoutSeconds to 2.000000
set uiScript to "click UI Element \"Document Pane\" of window 4 of application process \"Word\""
    my doWithTimeout( uiScript, timeoutSeconds )
    -- Press ⌘A
    delay 0.135988
    set timeoutSeconds to 2.000000
set uiScript to "keystroke \"a\" using command down"
    my doWithTimeout( uiScript, timeoutSeconds )
    delay 1.657981
    set timeoutSeconds to 2.000000
set uiScript to "click UI Element \"Document Pane\" of window 4 of application process \"Word\""
    my doWithTimeout( uiScript, timeoutSeconds )
    -- Convert to Endnote
    delay 5.327995
    set timeoutSeconds to 2.000000
set uiScript to "click menu item \"Convert to Endnote\" of menu 1 of UI element 1 of application process \"Word\""
    my doWithTimeout( uiScript, timeoutSeconds )
    -- Press ⌘S
    delay 1.840010
    set timeoutSeconds to 2.000000
set uiScript to "keystroke \"s\" using command down"
    my doWithTimeout( uiScript, timeoutSeconds )
    -- Press ⌘W
    delay 2.583996
    set timeoutSeconds to 2.000000
set uiScript to "keystroke \"w\" using command down"
    my doWithTimeout( uiScript, timeoutSeconds )
    on doWithTimeout(uiScript, timeoutSeconds)
set endDate to (current date) + timeoutSeconds
    repeat
    try
run script "tell application \"System Events\"
    " & uiScript & "
    end tell"
    exit repeat
    on error errorMessage
if ((current date) > endDate) then
error "Can not " & uiScript
    end if
    end try
    end repeat
    end doWithTimeout
That makes me ask two questions:
First: Why does it talk of window 2 and 4, when I had only one window open, and what I did while recording was one click into the footnote section and then go straight ⌘A?
Second: Automator doesn't realize that it's a footnote I click into, and that consequently pressing ⌘A selects all footnotes (not the whole main text). Since that doesn't seem recordable, a first step might be to write it manually—if such a thing is possible. Since Microsoft has deprecated VBA Macros and recommends using Apple Script instead, I hope it might. Is it? Or how else?
    Thanks

  • Anyone else had this problem with automation?

Its quite basic... and there is nothing on this in the manual that i can find in the automation section at all... I have an FM8 track recorded via midi on an instrument track... I put the automation in touch... I press play and record automation in this case on the talk wah "size" and it functions properly (when i let go it resumes the position it was in, and it records the automation data=I can make it visible) The automation will play until i try to record another pass of automation using a different parameter on FM8 which was "mouth" rather than "size" this time... when i try to record the second pass of automation it appears to be playing the other parameter's automation i had just recorded until i actually start automating the new parameter... then it stops playing any previously recorded automation and wont play back ANY automation from there on out... is this a bug anyone has encountered? I just made the switch from pro-tools to logic cuz i hate digi design... but should i upgrade to logic 8 since i bought 7 after august 1st before 8 came out? any suggestions in the meantime would greatly help... i have a deadline for this song by this sunday and this effect really adds alot, it would be greatly appreciated if anyone has encountered this.. and if you cant answer my first question then maybe you know how to record an instrument track to an audio track to where i could perform the effects manually as its recording to an audio track... So far any bussing techniques i know have failed despite the level showing up as if there were signal.. any help would be greatly appreciated
    Desperate Composer

I rarely record automation, and when I do I never do a second pass (usually hand draw automation in) but I have had problems with Logic 7 no longer playing back automation. I've been told its fixed in Logic 8, but in the mean time here is a work around.
Select the region where the automation is (if there is no region, create one using the pencil tool and expand it to cover all automation) and go OPTIONS menu -> TRACK AUTOMATION -> "Move current track data to region data." Now everything should play back as expected. If you want to edit the data, simply select "move current region data to track data" and edit away.
For some reason, Logic 7 will sometimes stop reading track automation data, but I have yet to have it stop reading region automation. This is a bug, and according to other users, has been fixed in Logic 8. Hope this helps until we eventually upgrade

  • Automator ID3 tags

    Hi,
I'm trying to organise my beatport files according to release date in Itunes.
The filenames hold numbers, for example:
    379980Electrostatic_OriginalRemastered.mp3
The problem is that Itunes doesn't provide a way to order the files according to filename, so I want to use Automator to copy the filename of each file into a ID3 textfield of the file in Itunes (for instance 'composer' or 'group'). This way, if I buy new tracks that are older, the automation will allow me to file them correctly.
Can someone help me through this? I tried:
In Itunes: click on file > show in Finder
In Finder: copy name of file
In Itunes: click on file > show info > paste name of file
The copying and pasting per file is not working, in Automator it just remembers to copy a certain text (from the basic file I recorded the automation).

The first thing that comes to mind probably doesn't help with Automation, but it might help you keep your data fields clean.
You mentioned using the Group or Composer tags. Have you considered using the sorting options for the file? In the info window for a file, the middle tab (fourth) named "Sorting" has the option to specify an alternate name for sorting purposes so you don't have to change the name of the song or misuse one of the other data fields.
So, if you place the number (I'm guessing that's what you are using from the file name) in the "Sort Name" field, it will sort properly when you sort by name of song in a playlist, even though it might look out of order since you'll only see the actually name.
As for doing large batches of files, I'd suggest AppleScript for setting the tags. While using Automator for collecting or providing the list of songs is what I often prefer, in this case I'd instead suggest having just a pure AppleScript script to use from the script menu in iTunes. That way, when you add more songs, you can select them and then select the same script from the iTunes script menu to instantly set up the sorting tag for them.
You can open Script Editor (Spotlight it) and then use it to open iTunes dictionary (File menu, if it's not in the dictionary Library window). Hopefully it has something in there for setting the sorting tags. I'm just a little too busy to dig around in there right now.
You might also consider checking out the AppleScript forums with this, since iTunes gets scripted all of the time. I'm sure its script menu has something to do with that.

  • Automation problem

I am just trying to record simple automation through a few 3rd party plug ins such as FM 8, Jupiter 8v, predator, etc, using my oxygen 49 midi controller. And I assign the knobs or faders on my controller to the parameters I want to change, and it does indeed control the parameter... However.... it wont record the midi automation data unless I move the parameter with the mouse. Then it will record all the automation data and works perfect. It is only with the controller that it doesnt record (even tho Im watching it move and hearing the sound be affected, it doesnt record the automation data if im using the controller)
I was told by someone that it could have something to do with "quick automation" and not being able to use the CC's to record automation (which doesnt seem to make sense to me and i cant find anything about "quick automation" in the manual)
Anyone know anything about this problem?

Actually the AQA was already off and there was no definied AQA. Once I defined it.. I was able to go into whatever plug in I needed to modulate.. move it once on the mouse so that it would show up quickly in the automation menu list.. select it in the list.. then in touch, write or latch it will automatically record the parameter i have selected once i started moving the knob or lever I assigned to the AQA. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction in the manual. I still havent figured out how to be able to modulate multiple parameters at one time in one pass though. Any ideas on that?

  • Automation with MS20 Controller

    Hi,
I'm using logic pro (latest version) with the Korg legacy collection - mainly the ms20 - and the ms20 midi controller.
I thought i would be able to do automation in logic like normal - use 'Touch' or 'Latch' mode then twiddle the knobs on the ms20 controller and my automation would be there in logic.
But it seems i have to record the automation in which i really don't like.
Is there a way i can do it the normal way, by using latch/touch mode?
I have an access virus ti and that is able to do automation the normal way.
Thank you for any help and ideas.
    Tom

The easiest thing to do is using the default parameters of the MK-449C and assign those to the Logic parameters you wish to control. Check out Logic's manual at page 498 for learning how to program new assignments for unsupported control surfaces.
