  • After refomatting HDD, reinstalling Vista plus service packs, recovering files from Microsoft backup and installing new copy of Firefox 3.6, Firefox will not run. Have deleted all old M0zilla profile folders and reinstalled Firefox again to no avail.

After computer would not boot and could not be repaired, I reformatted the HDD, reinstalled Vista plus all service packs and updates, recovered files from Microsoft backup and installed new copy of Firefox 3.6. Firefox will not run.
I have deleted all old M0zilla profile folders and reinstalled Firefox again to no avail.
After intallation was completed, the automatic startup just placed a small box on the screen "Import wiz". This just sat there with no activity. After I closed this box, none of the Firefox start buttons would open the program -- just the blue rotating icon for about 2 seconds then nothing.

If issue persists, due to sfc doesn't work, could you try to repair your system with the installation disk?

  • Time Capsule by default backup only data files and excludes program files like Photoshop, Lightroom, and MS Office, etc... right? or do I have to exclude manually?

Time Capsule by default backup only data files and excludes program files like Photoshop, Lightroom, and MS Office, etc... right since if crash I can reinstall and not want to take up disk space for applications that I have CD to reinstall?  Or do I have to manually exclude these?

Time Machine will back all files except files like caches, trash or temp files, you can select with file you would like to exclude by going into the Time Machine preferences.http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427

  • I lost a really important file (an iText Express document) randomly and then one day, a "recovered file" folder popped up and I assume it has to do with that, but the file just contains a doc with a bunch of coding. What do I do with that? HELP!!!

As the title question states, I lost a really important file with iText Express. I've been using iText Express for a year or two now because it's just the one application I downloaded for writing and saving documents. I was working on one for a few months and randomly one day last month, when I went to open it to resume editing my work, the file was gone! I searched my whole laptop and trash. Then one day, a "Recovered Files" folder popped up in the area my file used to be, so I assumed that was the file I lost being recovered and I felt relieved. But when I opened the folder, the document inside was a "SoftwareMap" document with a bunch of coding written in it. I don't understand what I'm supposed to do with that or how it's going to help me recover my file?!? I lost SO much work!!! If anyone has ANY idea what to do, how this happened, or if the coding is supposed to help me recover my file, PLEASE help!!!

No, I already tried looking at that. The file that recovered was not in the trash, it appeared in my documents folder. I opened it up and inside was an iText Express document with coding. Then inside of there, was and then and this "SoftwareMap" document contained a bunch of coding and symbols and words.

  • I have my mac's recovered files in my trash and i want to delete the items in my trash can i put my recovered files in a separate folder on my desktop and empty my trash or do they have to stay in my trash?

Empty the trash to release more HD space.
NOTE:  memory=RAM=hardware   Storage space & memory are 2 different things.

    Hi Dave,
    Welcome to Discussions!
FYI, it's not necessary to post your e-mail address, and in fact posting it as you've done leaves you susceptible to spam.
What is happening when you trying to recover those files? A bit more info would help us solve your particular problem.

  • Can I recover files deleted in trash and if so how?

    Hi everyone,
Blown it this time! in my haste to do things I have lost 7 years of photos. Can anyone reccomend any data recovery software? Or ideas on how to get it without buying. I am looking at Data Rescue 3 at present.
    Cheers
    paul

    Basics of File Recovery
    Files in Trash
If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location. OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. If a program does an immediate delete rather than moving files to the Trash, then the files are gone. Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When files are deleted only the directory entries, not the files themselves, is modified. The space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage, but the files are still on the drive. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten with recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Do I need to know what a "Recovered File" in trash is before emptying the trash?

I have seen several questions about Recovered Files in the trash and am guessing its safe to just dump the trash.  The files are "Image Debug" and "MaglevExpressTemp140".  I did a google search and know that I'm not the only one this has happened to and I'm pretty sure its not serious, but wondered if anyone knows what they are.
I'm thinking it might have something to do with scanning of some old photos I did earlier today on my HP C6280 All-in-One.  There was an HP software update a few days ago and its working fine, but maybe this is a bug that my mac just trashes.  If possible, I would like to understand what it is.  If its too technical, I'll just trash it whenever it shows up.  I have had a few unknown Recovered File folders show up in the past  and trashed them with no consequences that I know of.  thank you.
    laverne's mom

Thank you.  Nothing crashed at all which I guess is a good thing.  I just couldn't figure out where they came from and since the only things I did today besides being on a few forums that I am involved with was to scan some really old family photos to email or post on one of the forums.  So it is either something in the scanning or in Preview.  and like I said the HP software is the one most recently updated.  I'm going to trash them now so I don't have to think about it.  And will do it again if the reappear.

  • Can´t open/import any file like jpgs, tiffs, psd!?!

so strange, but my indesign cs5 does not support any files like normal jpgs and tiffs!!
    i cant open them...
i always get the info box: Cannot open the file "blabla.JPG". Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that.....
    hello?? jpg?? tiff?? psd?? pdf???
is something blocked?? no file AT ALL, there must be something wrong...thats for sure.
i reinstalled the whole application! really...i dont know what to do, i hope someone here can help me!
its frustrating!! all jpgs in the open dialog from indesign are grey when its on -all readable docs- in -all docs- its black to choose,
but nothing happens, just the fu¢≠}g info box shows up again.
strange thing is i used  it before and it worked, like half a year ago on my macbook. i transfered the the user and all applications to the imac
so its identical, photoshop and lightroom is working fine, just ID is making trouble.
    thx for your help guys!
    max

You have to have some inkling of InDesign before going to work with it. Do you have any previous experience with it? Are you aware of the Online Help? (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/indesign/cs/using/WSa285fff53dea4f8617383751001ea8cb3f-6bc4a.h tml in particular).
InDesign does not Open image files. To get an image into an InDesign document, you have to Place it.

  • Is it possible to reserve a space on the time capsule to use to share files like; music, pictures, or documents?

There are 4 Mac's in my house and I'd like to back up all of them to a time capsule, i know it is possible to do this. however i would also like to be able to dump files like; music, pictures, and documents onto the time capsule so that the others mac will be able to access these files when they want to. This will stop the need for me leaving my mac on whilst other macs access my hard drive, or passing USB sticks around the house.

With an ordinary disk you can partition it with Disk Utility to reserve space for various things. With the Time Capsule you cannot partition it because Disk Utility doesn't work on networked drives and AirPort Utility can only format an entire Time Capsule, not paritition it.
You can simply store the files you want to share on the Time Capsule and turn on file sharing, and it will do what you want. The only downside is that because you can't reserve space, eventually the Time Machine backup(s) on it will reduce the amount of available space to zero. This would eventually happen anyway whether you store your files on there or not, and then Time Machine starts deleting the oldest backups, but if you store your files on there and space goes to zero people won't be able to add files.
I'm not sure about the "not powered" part. For many months I stored an iTunes library and music on a USB hard drive that was powered off the Time Capsule USB port. Of course, I did this so that the music would be accessible anywhere in the home. I swear that the external drive never used its own power cable. It was a portable bus-powered USB enclosure with a laptop-sized drive in it, though, so it normally does not require a power cable. If the files you need to share aren't too large, you might think about plugging in a USB stick drive which would be very compact, needs little power, inexpensive, and has no moving parts to break or heat up.

  • Replacing recovered files from a crashed HD

I had a HD crash but could recover the files on the disk. Any website that explainse how I can put back the recovered files like for instance my contacts from Adressbook, Software, etc.
Or can any one explain where to put what files to get the closesed to my previous configuration?
    Many thanks,
    Werner

I would just copy them because Migration Assistant sets up a new account, which might cause you to have to move the files around.

  • What is this "recovered files"?

sometimes when I reboot.. or start the computer if it was off.. when it starts back up a file is in the trash named "recovered files". what is that and why is it there? the few times i've looked at it its always empty. is there any significance to it at all?

Hello, I am fairly new to Mac, only about a years experience, but I just got my mom a new iMac and ran into a similar problem with the iTunes library.
My mom and little sister are using the same computer and I set them up with different logins so they could each have their own desktop/prefs etc...but they wanted to have the same iTunes library so I had to put the library into a different spot than the normal "music" section. After a few days my little sister noticed it was difficult for her to navigate to the iTunes library folder to upload music to myspace etc. So I made an alias of the folder and put it into the "music" section on the Finders sidebar. After the next startup all the music was gone from iTunes, including her playlists. I paniced for a minute, but then realized the music was still there and just had to "add to library" to get it all back, no luck with the playlists though.
Long story short, maybe your music is still on your computer somewhere?
I'm still not sure why that happened though, can I not make an alias of a folder to keep elsewhere on the computer without the program "forgetting" where it is? I left the original folder in place.

  • Using the recovered files folder in the Trash for Flash CS5 files

I'm creating a complex animation (hand drawing every two frames on a Cintiq) in Flash CS5 and, despite saving, lost the day's work upon my Mac freezing - over 300 drawings, just gone.  The recovered files folder contains /tmp and .dat files, and I've found no guidance online as what to do with these.  Please help!

Those files in the recovered files folder happen when an APP crashes with unwritten data/files.
It's not very likely those tmp or dat files will be of any use, but if critical get HexEdit and open those files for a look...

We should work on why the crashes & loses are happening.
