Recovering from DHCP failure

Hi
I am on Windows 2008. Just wondering what kind of problems I can get into if my DHCP server fails. We are backing up the DHCP DB once a day and the lease period for some odd reason has been set to 1 day.
For the sake of discussion I want you to assume that I backed up my DB yesterday at 6 PM and my DHCP crashed today at 4 PM.
I can restore from my backup. But the entries in the backup could be stale.
There could be some IP Address that was allocated by the DHCP server today at 2 PM but is see as available in yesterday's backup. Post restoration, the server could try to lease out that IP Address to some other system. (I assume that the system that got
the address at 2 PM would not contact the DHCP server again until 2 AM in the morning (50% of its least period)
There could be some IP Address that was assigned to some system at 3 PM (just before the crash) or not assigned at all but the backup taken yesterday could show the IP Address against a different system with active lease. In this case, if I try to use the
DHCP log to identify a system on the network then I am likely to reach the incorrect system.
Is there some kind of reconciliation option where the DHCP could force all the clients to renew leases to get to some consistent state of the network?
Thanks
-GW

Hi,
Windows Server 2008 DHCP has both server-side and client-side conflict detection to prevent duplicate IP addresses on your network.
Client conflict detection
Client computers running Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0, Windows Millennium Edition, and Windows 98 automatically check to
determine if an IP address is already in use before using it.
After the DHCP client receives a lease from the DHCP server, the client sends an Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) request to the address that it has been assigned. If a reply to the ARP request
is received, the client has detected a conflict and sends a DHCPDecline message to the DHCP server. The DHCP server attaches a BAD_ADDRESS value to the IP address in the scope for the length of
the lease. The client then begins the lease process again, and is offered the next available address in the scope.
Server conflict detection
If your network includes older DHCP clients that do not perform conflict detection themselves, you can enable conflict detection on the DHCP server. By default, the Windows Server 2008 DHCP Server
service does not perform any conflict detection.
To detect conflicts, the DHCP server pings (sends an ICMP Echo message to) an IP address before offering that address to clients in a new lease. The DHCP server only pings addresses that have not
been successfully and previously leased. If a client requests a lease on an IP address that it already had or is requesting a renewal, the DHCP server does not ping the IP address.
If conflict detection is enabled, an administrator-defined number of pings are sent. The server waits 1 second for a reply. Because the time required for a client to obtain a lease is equal to the
number of pings used, choose this value carefully because it directly impacts the overall performance of the server. In general, one ping is sufficient.
If a response to the ping is received, a conflict is registered and that address is not offered to clients requesting a lease from the server. The DHCP server then attaches a BAD_ADDRESS value to
that IP address in the scope. The DHCP server then tries to lease the next available address. If the duplicate address is removed from the network, the BAD_ADDRESS value attached to the IP address
can be deleted from the scope’s list of active leases, and then the address returns to the pool. Addresses are marked as BAD_ADDRESS for the length of the lease for which the scope is configured.
If the BAD_ADDRESS entry is not manually removed, it will automatically be removed after a period of time equal to the lease time for the scope.
Note: In general, using server conflict detection only as a troubleshooting aid when you suspect that duplicate IP addresses are in use on your network. Each additional conflict detection attempt
adds to the time required to negotiate leases for DHCP clients.
Hope this helps.

  • Recovering from catastrophic failure - keys and media - help?

Not sure if this is the right place, but it looks like a good place to start...
    Situation is:
    - MacbookPro catastrophic failure.
    - Can't locate original media (not even sure of the version but I think it was a couple versions back of Creative Suite)
    - Foolishly didn't record License Keys other than electronically... on the failed computer
I'd love to reinstall on a soon-to-be-purchased new MacbookPro, but I haven't a clue how to round up the needed items (media and license keys).
Does Adobe have a way to find out what products I have registered?
Can they provide downloadable media images and license keys for those versions?
    Any other suggestions?
(Yes, I know... buy the new version, but looking to use license I already have since I'm staring at the cost of a new MacBookPro)
    Thanks to all.

    Thanks Mylenium.
It dumps me to a series of questions trying to isolate my problem (none of which matches) before it dumps me at a page saying my support options are the forums.
    Any other ideas?

    Hi,
    Try the following.
Shut down the notebook.  Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.  Insert your installation disc.  Select Boot Options ( usually f9 ).  Use the arrow key to highlight the CD/DVD drive and hit enter - you may also get a prompt to 'Press any key to continue'.

ATI Radeon 64 DDR VIVO AGP4x
    500 MB DDR PC2100 (266)
    80 GB HD ATA100
    Windows XP SP1
The system just locks up, Dark screen and after a while turns to 640 x 480 4bit mode and says:
"Microsoft Windows detected and recovered from a device failure. Please save your work and reboot to restore full functionality."
From other forums same thing happens in Gigabyte, asus and via. It looks like asus has allready made a new bios update for there board I hope MSI do the same thing soone  ;(  ;( .
Aparently 8X havent been fully exploted and there are some glitches. On top of that Windows XP and 2000 have some reflesh problems over 60 Hz (as it says in ati web)
Mean while is up to us to look for workarounds until they do there job.  If the Mobos (motherboard) makers dont make the change then it will have to be up to ATI.
Aparrently disabling the Fastwrite on windows helps a lot.  So far I have had this problem making a data backup on a DVD-R so two DVD-R wasted.
If you want more info on where I got all this go to:
    http://www.rage3d.com/board/showindex.php?s=&threadid=33662452
It looks like NVidia is having the same problem too but sorry cant help you there. go to this link to see if they can help you:
http://www.tek-tips.com and search for weirdest video card problem   thread749-458930

Your video card doesn't support AGP 8x, so that shouldn't be a factor at all.   Does SmartGart report it running at 4x?
Did you do a clean install of XP when you started using your mobo?
Has this problem only occured when using your DVD burner?  If so, the problem may lie with that.
Only other suggestion... maybe time for a new video card?

    Hi all,
Had a software failure while upgrading the fabric interconnects. Does anyone know the process to recover from a software failure.
Ive copied up the kickstart and system images, from the loader prompt ive booted the kickstart image and then loaded the system image but the fabric interconnect still reboots to the "switch(boot)" prompt.

    Hi Robert,
Thanks for the tips, but unfortunately im still stuck on the switch(boot): prompt.
The bootflash: only has 2 files in it, the kickstart and system image.

I am installing CCM 8.6.1 on an MCS7835I3 platform. The platform came with CCM 8.6.1 preloaded on the harddrive. During the installation linux detected some compenents like NIC, Raid, and USB.
then after checking some components i face below error
"The installtion has failed and must be restarted to recover from the faliure.
You may dump diagnostic information at this time to a USB storage key. Would you like to dump diagnostic information"
I am try to figure out what is causing this message.
    Pls help me!!

    Hi
It seems to me that your server did not begin the CUCM installation. If you already have pre-loaded CUCM media in the server hard disk then you should first check the boot sequence on the server. Make sure that the first option is the hard disk.
    Once confirmed, restart the server.
If you still face the issue, then i suggest that you install CUCM from CD.
Below is the installation document. Do check the server compatibility and hardware requirements.

  • Recovering from a partial RT Image

We use the RT Replication VI to setup our RT controllers.  Recently we
had the imaging process get interrupted due to a network failure.
After the failure we could no longer see the RT controller in MAX.  In
order to get it back up and running, we had to format the CF card (we
are using the 8145RT card).  Is there a way to recover from a partial
install other then formating the CF card?  I was hoping that putting
the controller in User-Defined Safe Mode would allow it to reappear in
MAX, but it doesn't.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

We were able to reproduce the issue.  Below is the serial output from the unit after the issues has ocurred.  The S3 switch for user-defined safe mode is enabled.

  • Can bad PRAM (CMOS) battery be "guilty" for MBP not recovering from sleep?

I have MBP 4.1 (last with removable battery) and it wont recover from sleep... i tried reseting SMC but no effect (three months ago SMC reset worked well for me). I tried removing/inserting RAM, HDD, CMOS Battery but nothing can make my MBP recover from sleep . Does anyone have expirience similar to mine? Solutions? Suggestions?

I would not expect a dead PRAM battery to casue that. If it did, zapping the PRAM would restore function until the computer was again deprived of all power--wall and main battery.
Can the computer run at all? If you can get it to wake up, that is a different set of issues than one that will not wake up at all.
If it won't wake up at  all: Remember that the MacBook Pro 4,1 had the dreaded "Nvidea curse." The Geforce 8600M GT video chipset was prone to failure due to improper manufacturing by Nvidea. Apple had a repair program to fix this at no cost to you but it expired in Dec 2012. Mine waited until June 2013 to die. It's still dead.
The only cure for the "Curse" is a new logic board. An Apple service provider may still have the hardware tester that positively identifies if the video chipset has failed.
If you can get the computer running: there was a sleep issue with mine (3,1 but same logic board architecture) but it went away when I upgraded from 10.5 to 10.6. Still, worth checking if you get the comptuer running. Open Network preferences and select Wi-Fi. When that screen comes up, click the Advanced button--it should come up with the WiFi tab active; if not, make is so.
Now delete any wireless networks you don't use on at least a weekly basis. My old MBP refused to wake from sleep and required a restart. A check of the system log showed the computer was trying to a connect to the wifi network at a lodge I'd stayed in a month before and 50 miles away. Deleting that "remembered network" cured the problem

  • Kodo not recovering from bad connection in new MySQL driver

    Hi,
I'm using kodo 2.4.1 and the latest stable MySQL driver 3.0.6. After
leaving the application inactive for a few hours, the connection to
mysql is no longer usable. This did not occur with MySQL version 2.0.14
(as I believe Kodo weren't reusing the connections).
Are there any properties that I could set, so Kodo can keep the
connection active or recover from the problem?
    Makas

Ok, thanks Marc, like I said though, I am now re-using MySQL 2.0.14
driver. I'm not sure if I'm gaining any advantages with MySQL 3.0.6 anyway.
But I'll probably upgrade it after the next Kodo is released.

    Makas-
Sorry ... I didn't test the property I sent. The problem is that our
options parsing does not deal with spaces (this will be fixed in the
    next release).
Instead of ValidateConnectionSQL="SELECT 1", you should be able to use
ValidateConnectionSQL=SELECT(1), which does not contain spaces.

    Marc,
Using the properties you wrote, kodo doesn't seems to be able to parse
it. I've also tried various other combinations with no success. I'm now
going to use the older mysql driver.
    Marc Prud'hommeaux wrote:

Kodo should be re-using the MySQL Connection in exactly the same way,
regardless of the version. The problem is that it looks like MySQL people
slipped in an "optimization" into 3.0.6 whereby Connection.isClosed()
does not actually test the state of the Connection, but instead just
returns true if and only if Connection.close() has been invoked.
You can get around this by specifying some SQL to validate the
Connections. The following property should do the trick:
    com.solarmetric.kodo.impl.jdbc.DictionaryProperties=\
    ValidateConnections=true \
    ValidateConnectionSQL="SELECT 1"
Please let us know if the problem persists.

    Hi Marc,
Here're the stack trace of the exception and the kodo properties. There
isn't any long running transaction. The application is basically left
idle for some time and subsequent connections fails. It could be
connections obtained from the pool, but I'm not sure.
I will re-use mysql 2.0.14 for now. Please let me know if I'm missing
any other properties or if you need more info.

Is Kodo idle during a long-running transaction, or does the error occur
when a new Connection is allocated? If the former, then there is nothing
we can do: MySQL shouldn't be dropping an open Connection while a
transaction is active. If the latter, then the property
    com.solarmetric.kodo.impl.jdbc.ConnectionTestTimeout specified the
number of seconds between which the connection should be tested for
valididty when removed from the pool.
    See also:
    http://docs.solarmetric.com/manual.html#com.solarmetric.kodo.impl.jdbc.ConnectionTestTimeout
If this does not help, can you let us know your properties and some
    details about your application?

    Hi,
I'm using kodo 2.4.1 and the latest stable MySQL driver 3.0.6. After

(as I believe Kodo weren't reusing the connections).
Are there any properties that I could set, so Kodo can keep the

  • Recovering from various disasters

    Hello,
I'm trying to put together a plan to recover from potential OVM failures, but I'm unclear about a number of points. Any suggestions and clarifications would be most welcome.
    Guest:
We're installing a backup agent on all the VM's (Red Hat and Oracle Linux). If the VM was somehow completely lost, we plan to re-create it, do a fresh o/s install, and restore the filesystems from backup.
    VM Manager:
It runs as VM. To recover from a problem, we plan to reinstall the VM Manager using the same UUID, rather than backing it up. If we were to back it up, are there critical configuration files we should back up?
    Database:
This is exported and backed up regularly.
    Oracle VM Server:
I'm not sure about this one. If we somehow lost one server (we have a 3-node cluster), if we just reinstall Oracle VM Server with the same ip and hostname would all be well after I rediscovered it? As long as the other two nodes were up and running, would the rebuilt server be added to the ocfs2 cluster when it's rediscovered?
Also, what information is in the server pool filesystem and the database? How do you all back up the server pool filesystem (or do you?) ? We can't install our backup agent on the Oracle VM Servers.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

there is no need to backup the Oracel VM Server .
if something wrong with the OVS,not the ocfs2,you may wipe the db for the OVS,and the restart the agent then reboot the OVS.The ovs would be fresh as you just installed it

  • Cannot recover from lost of all the controlfiles without resetlogs?

Cannot recover from lost of all the controlfiles without resetlogs?
I have an Oracle10g (10.2.0.1) database(on RHEL5.0 system) DB10G with a recovery catalog database RCATALLOG. The RCATALOG database is synchronized with theDB10G database.
Then I lost all the current controlfiles and I make the following steps:
    SQL> shutdown abort;
    ORACLE instance shut down.
    SQL> startup nomount;
    ORACLE instance started.
    [oracle@hostp db10g]$ rman target / catalog rman/oracle@rcatalog
    RMAN> restore controlfile;
    RMAN> alter database mount;
    RMAN> r*ecover database;*
    RMAN> alter database open;

Because I did not restore the the controlfiles from the backups, I do not need to open the database with open resetlogs.
Why I cannot open the database without resetlogs? Is any step wrong?
    Thank you

    Hi,
You restored the controlfile from backup but not the full DB. The Database files header are not sinchronized with your controlfile.
    Follow the following steps:
    1) Mount your Database and create a backup of the controlfile using:
SQL>ALTER DATABASE BACKUP CONTROLFILE TO TRACE;2) Modify the trace file and recreate the controlfile.
    3) At this stage your database is mounted. You need to recover it.
    SQL> recover database;
Media recovery complete.4)Open the database after recovery completes.
    SQL> alter database open;
Database altered.Done, any problem you can use this link for reference:

  • Has anyone been able to recover from an error -1 when restoring an Iphone 4

Is there a way to recover from an error -1 when trying to restore an Iphone 4 or is this a hardware issue?  I have a friends Iphone 4 (GSM) and everytime I try to restore I get an unknown error -1 message at the very end of the restore.  Not much info is known about this error, I couldn't find anything online.  I've updated to the latest Itunes, cleared out the host files of computer and tried to recover with latest 6.1.3 OS, PLEASE HELP!

Error 1 or -1 indicates a serious hardware failure.
Take the device to Apple for evaluation and possible replacement.
