Recovering partitions

Well, I screwed up one of the HDDs that I have installed, causing the computer to not be able to recognize the filesystem type. The HDD was on sdb and had two partitions, one NTFS for Windows, and another Fat32 that I was storing media on. I did some reading around and found testdisk and I was able to get back into the Windows partition, but I've no idea how to find the media one. Does anyone have any ideas? This media one is the most important one for me to recover.
I tried photorec too, which comes with testdisk, but it was only pulling stuff from the windows partition, not the other one.

Amarildo wrote:I always save a copy of the MBR in case something goes wrong. Once deleted the partition table and couldn't get my partitions back, but I had a copy of it. It's also useful if you thing some malware is in the MBR (specially since you use Windows too).
This is good advice; however, most newer computers use the GUID Partition Table (GPT), not MBR, so backing up the MBR won't be of much use with them. To create a backup of a working GPT, I recommend using gdisk; its "b" option will back up the GPT data to a file. You can then restore the data using the "l" option on the recovery & transformation menu.
Of course, this doesn't help Somnus. I'm posting it just in the hope that somebody will follow this advice and be saved Somnus's pain in the future.
As to Somnus's problem, if you've recovered one partition, it's conceivable that you'll be able to recover the other just by creating a new partition in a suitable spot. If the recovered partition is the first one on the disk, and if they were both primary partitions, use fdisk (or gdisk if the disk was GPT) to create a new partition beginning on the first sector after the end of the existing partition. If the second partition was a logical partition, then I recommend creating a new primary partition with a gap of 2048 sectors. (I don't recommend creating a new logical partition because that requires writing data to the disk in an area that might hold filesystem data if you guess wrong about the partition sizes.) If the recovered partition is at the end of the disk, create your new primary partition beginning with sector 2048.
Once you create the partition, you can try mounting it. If that fails, though, do not use "fsck" or other recovery tools on the partition -- at least, not in a mode that changes data in the partition. A failure to mount the partition could indicate filesystem damage, but it could also be that you guessed wrong about where the partition begins. If you guessed wrong and use "fsck" to "fix" the data, you'll end up doing more damage. You could use "fsck" in a mode that scans but does not write data to see if it seems to think there's a real filesystem in the partition. Read the "fsck" man page (or, better, the "dosfsck" man page, since it's a FAT partition you're trying to recover) to learn about its options. I don't recall what they are, offhand.
This approach of guessing about where the partition begins is an act of desperation, but it sounds like you're at that point....

  • How to recover partition (with encrypted sparse bundle disk image) that won't mount?

I have a Late 2013 27" iMac running OS X 10.9.4.  I have an external drive that I use for Time Machine backups which also has an encrypted sparse bundle disk image.  Yesterday, the drive stopped showing up in Finder, so I went to Disk Utility and tried to mount it.  No go.  So I tried repairing it, and it said it couldn't.  I'm not worried about the Time Machine backup since my iMac is find so I can just make a backup to a new external drive.  However, the encrypted sparse bundle disk image has some files in it that I don't have elsewhere.  Is there a way to recover these files without sending it in to a drive recovery service (since those would cost a LOT of money)?

No such options.  As I mentioned in the post title and in my first post, the partition won't mount.

  • Ideacentre A720 - Recover Partition (One Key Recovery) doesn't boot

My System was without a SSD Drive, but I upgraded it by my own and everything was allright after I cloned the System to the SSD-drive. I keep the "LENOVO_PART" (20gb) on my HDD, and the rest of it was just for Data-storage.
2 Month later Iwanted to change my Partitions on the SSD so I did an imagebackup with the OneKey Recovery Software and at this time my OneKey Recovery Partition was still bootable. But after cleaning C: I couldn't boot the OKR-Parttion anymore due to the fact I couldn't load my imagebackup!!!
After installing Windows 7 new I realized the "LENOVE_PART" Partition is still there hidden and with the id 12, everything is as it should be, but i can't boot the recovery system to restore my old image.
What can I change to be able booting the recovery system again?

May be a hardware ram problem.
Test with Memtest or swap in known good ram.
Memtest is not infallible, so testing with other ram is best.
A repair shop may do this cheap?

  • Restoring from recovering partition also MS Office bought from Dell

I bought from Dell a Vostro 3550 including a MS Office 2010 licence 3 years and half ago. The PC always worked fine but in the last few months its startup with Windows 7 Professional is getting slower and slower, while with Ubuntu (it is now a dual boot machine) performances continue to be good. So I decided to restore the original operating system from the recovery partition, but I'm not sure that this will restore not only Windows 7 Professional but also the legal and activated copy of MS Office I bought from Dell.
I was able to get  with Belarc Advisor and similar tools the activation key for MS Office, but I would like to know if
    - there are ways to check if in the recovery partition there is also what is required for restoring MS Office
    - from you experience when Dell sells Ms Office with one of its PCs, MS Office is included in the recovery partition too
Last point: I went to Dell download center by providing my service tag / express service code, but MS Office is not in the list of software I can download for my PC.
Thanks in advance for any help

Some paid software is in  My Dell Downloads. Office might not be in the restore partition, but as long as you have the key that came on the card you received with the computer, you can download from Office Downloads. The Belarc key might not be your individual key, but your Dell OEM generic key. That won't work. See if you have a sticker on the computer with the Office key.

See if you can download a copy before doing a restore. Also run a disk check to see if the drive is failing. And remember that after 3-4 years, restore to factory settings might not work at all. Have good copies of important files and all reinstallation media for programs.

  • Disk utility showing recover partition but not main partition

I have a Macbook Pro A1278 that has been dropped.  I pulled the hard drive and ran seatools on it to verify it has no physical defects.  The disk utility shows the recovery partition but not the main partition.  It infrequently will boot to the users partition.  I usually get the flashing folder with a question mark in it.  What is the next step to try to backup the data on the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • How to recover partition with osx after install

yea so i decided to install win 7 using bootcamp and made a partition for 50gigs. after following instructions the win 7 install menu came up were the partitions are located, and on the bottom it showed the partition i made for 50gigs that read (bootcamp partition) or something similar, anyways i clicked on it and it told me that win 7 could not be installed on that partition. so i clicked on advanced and then clicked on "format" again to reformat the partition again. after win 7 was installed succesfully and a few reboots later i cannot access or even see osx anymore. i know what and why its not showing up i just dont know how to reinstall the bootloader to access the partition again. does any dual boot loader work ok or what is the best way to make this work. thank you for any help in advanced.

When starting the system hold down the Option/Alt key to get a boot selection screen. Select Mac OS X to boot from. If by chance there is no OS X boot selection then you formatted the wrong partition and wiped out OS X. If that is the case you'll need to start over reinstalling OS X or restore from your Time Machine backup.

Hi I changed my mind and will comment!http://pcsupport.about.com/b/2009/05/25/sfc-scannow-repairs-windows-files-the-easy-way.htm
SFC /scannow is a super-useful command you can use in any Windows version since Windows 2000. When the SFC (System File Checker) command is used with the /scannow switch, the tool will scan all of the important Windows files on your computer and replace them as necessary.
"Missing and corrupt operating system files (like many DLL files) are arguably the biggest cause of major Windows issues. Considering that, plus the fact that SFC /scannnow is completely automatic and very easy to use, the tool should usually be one of your first troubleshooting steps."
Use SFC /scannow to Repair Protected Windows Files
PS I don't think you can say negative.

  • Do you have to down load from the internet using apple's recover partition, every time you need to do a clean install? or can you make a copy of Mt Lion onto a USB stick and install off that?

Do you have to down load Mountain Lion from the internet every time you need to do a clean install? or can you make a copy of Mt Lion onto a USB stick and install off that?
    Thanks

Yes you can make a USB stick of Lion or Mt Lion. Use Lion Disk Maker after you download OS X from the internet.
For Lion you have to point the download to an external drive and watch when it completes and reboots the system to start the install disconnect the external. If you bought Mt Lion from the Mac App Store then you can download it from there and just cancel the install when it comes up on the desktop.
If you are downloading from the Recovery HD or from the Online Internet Recovery system, slightly different then the built in Recovery HD, then again you need to point it to an external drive and discoonect that drive when the system reboots to start the real install.
Then use Lion disk maker to create either a DVD disc or USB thumb of the install files.

  • Trying to recover data from partition

Hello, yesterday I ran into serious issues with the mac which had lead me to do a forced shut down, after which, the mac has only been able to boot through the recovery mode (cmd+control+p+r) that takes a while to complete. Leaving the mac to load by itself without holding the keys after the chime, would lead to the apple logo "loading" for hours on end with no sign of progress.
Once the recovery mode has finished "setting up" there are several options. Naturally, I wanted to recover all the data on my interal HD before I do any wipes. In Disk Utility, the partition for my internal hardrive is grayed out and I have not been able to access it through the application. In terminal the drive is known as disk0s2, and have had no luck accessing it either.
Here's the current issue..So after an hour of looking around, there are solutions on the web to use recovery software. One of them is testDisk. I placed files for that program on my external hardrive (through another mac pc) and I'm trying to access the files via terminal on my faulty macbook. In terminal, after cd'ing to the directory, and typing ./testdisk I get the message: Illegal Instruction set 4.
Online sources have mentioned a flag -mmacosx-version-min=10.x
but it has not done anything to change the problem. My macbook is running with an OS X version is 10.7.5. testDisk version is 7.0. I've been trying to run with administrator privilege using sudo command but it appears that the command is not available in recovery mode..
So given that I'm running the mac on 'recovery mode' with limited choices, what is the best way to go about recovering partition data from my internal hardrive? Am I on the right path?

...the mac has only been able to boot through the recovery mode (cmd+control+p+r)
This is NOT the recovery mode. This is resetting the PRAM.
Boot into the Recovery Drive by holding down Command R when restarting.
Run Repair Drive and Repair Permissions using Disk Utility in Recovery.
    Restart
Hold down the Shift key as described below. This is a safe boot mode. This will do some extra clean up on your Mac.
    Safe boot
    *  shutdown
    *  start the Mac and *wait* for the startup chime to sound
    *  after the sound, press and hold down the shift key
    *  keep holding and *wait* until the grey  Apple logo appears
    *  now release the shift key and just wait (it could take a few minutes)
    *  eventually the login screen appears with the words SAFE BOOT
    *  continue to log into your account.
Can you log in via safe boot mode?
If yes, you might want to consider running the combo updater over your install to refresh your files.
OS X Lion Update 10.7.5 (Client Combo) 1.91 GB
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1582
MORE INFO ON WHY RUNNING COMBO FIXES ISSUES
Apple updates available from the Software Update application are incremental updates. Delta updates are also incremental updates and are available from Apple Downloads (software updates are generally smaller than delta updates). The Combo updates contain all incremental updates and will update files that could have become corrupted.
Combo updaters will install on the same version as they're applying--no need to roll back or do a clean install. So if you think you've got a borked 10.7.5 install from a regular update, just run the 10.7.5  Combo Updater on that system.
"Delta" updaters can only take you from one version to the next. For example: 10.7.4 to 10.7.5 . If somehow the 10.7.5  is missing something it should have, and that something isn't changed between 10.7.4  and 10.7.5  it will still be stale after the delta update.

  • Deleted partition by accident MUST recover

I had a hard drive that I put in an external enclosure for USB 2.0 and used it on my Mac
Its 320 GB. I had half partitioned for NTFS and half free. I wanted to make a mac partition out of the free part and somehow ended up partitioning the whole drive as free space. I have data I must recover. I tried hooking it up to windows and using Partition Magic's Recover Partition feature with no luck.

    Glad to help.

  • Need help with recovering data from a truecrypt HDD

I have done something stupid, I have run fdisk on my truecrypt hdd by mistake, and created 2 new partition. the 1st one on 67mb and the 2sd for the rest of the hdd.
Can someone plz help me with restoring the data? I am not really sure there to begin.

Get testdisk.  I use Parted Magic to recover partitions with Testdisk.  So long as you can decrypt the resurrected partitions AND provided you have NOT written to those two partitions after they were fdisk'ed you should be able to recover from this mess.  I really recommend PartedMagic for this sort of thing only because it has a good interface and a lot of other tools in one place.
Testdisk isn't hard to use and there are mini-tutorials out there if you're really stuck such as these links from our wiki:

  • Booting Windows 8.1, blinking underscore problem - with data already on partition.

So I updated my OS X software from the App Store (just a newer version of Yosemite than before) not too long ago.  I wanted to boot into windows because I had certain data and applications on there I needed that have no version for Mac.  So I tried booting, but when I boot the windows partition, nothing goes beyond the blinking underscore.  I tried researching the problem; people have had the issue with the blinking underscore, but that is when they tried installing windows [there was no data on the line].  I however installed windows quite a while back and it is stacked with data that is pretty important for me.  If there was a way for me to transfer the data to an external drive or the Mac partition as backup, I'd gladly just re-install windows.  But there's data, I need the data on that partition.  I know it's 100% possible to get the data, but I'm not sure anyone has found a way yet[?].  I've seen solutions that require things like gdisk, but the problem where that stuff would be required is a little different from mine; their partition wouldn't show as being bootable at all, so I didn't try that method (I'm just being cautious, Macs aren't my specialty ) However, in Disk Utility, the partition is labeled as disk0s4, which is similar to those other problems people have had in the past.  If possible, can somebody point me in the right direction, or maybe even walk me through it?  I'd greatly appreciate it.  And if my problem does get solved, can someone suggest a safe way of updating OS X without it corrupting my data on other partitions?

Well the only update other than Yosemite would be Autodesk Sketchbook from the app store, but I doubt that it would have to do with bootcamp, so no, there were no updates other than a new version of Yosemite.  And have testdisk, but do I need to search for lost partitions?  That's an option I can see here. If I need to look specifically for NTFS headers, then maybe I'd needs steps on how to do that.

  • Recovery Partition mandatory for File Vault and unencrypted TM Backup?

I recently had to setup my Macbook Pro from scratch meaning erasing the whole disk and start from there.
The update to Lion took already place a while ago and I had File Vault active. After making a last backup using
TM I erased the disk and all partitions including Recovery partition and used the Leopard system DVD to boot
    the machine.
From there I used the restore function to restore my TM backup to the MacBook. However, as the drive was
not partioned and not formated, I had to do this manually. Apparently, the recovery process via TM does not include
that. After system recovery, I booted from the Macbook and all apps and configuration seemed ok.
I was a little surprised to see that I was able to do this recovery without being asked for ID and password of the user's File Vault access
or the File Vault recovery key. All I needed was the TM ID and password (which is different from the owners ID and password)
I am not sure if this is supposed to work like this but I looks rather easy to gain access to application an data of another user if that
    is all it takes?
Now booting Lion again, I checked File Vault and noticed it was disabled although it was enabled for quite a while and long time
before I took the latest backup. I could not turn it on, after providing a recovery key and asking me wether I wanted to write it down
or safe it with Apple which I declined I wanted to reboot the notebook to start encryption but stopped saying my partition or volume
would not support File Vault. This was GUID and MacOS Extended Journal partition and volume which to my knowledge would
certainly support File Vault. In fact this is basically what I had before when File Vault was turned on and running.
I called Apple support a few times. The second agent told me that it does not work because there is not recovery partition on my
system but there was when I took the latest backup and I do have other means to get the recovery screen. Anyway it seems that
File Vault required a local Recovery partition and I was wondering if anyone can tell me why this dependency exist. If I write down the
recovery key, why would I need it to be stored on my disk as well?
Also, if anyone has an idea if there is a way of creating a local recovery partition without having to go through the lenghty process of installing
Leopard then upgrade to Lion and install all the apps and configure the OS again, would be great? I assume when I am back on Lion and use the TM
backup for recovery, I probably end up with having the Recovery partition deleted and start from scratch again.
I am a little concerned about the fact that it seems so easy to gain access to a protected backup and that the TM restore process does not include
restoring partition and volumes as well. Who knows how many other dependencies exist and users have to reinstall their system again after recovery.
I was following the recovery instruction of Apple but perhaps someone knows a better way to do this?

Just an update, I went ahead and installed Lion again over the existing TM restored installation using the Lion Update file and at least File Vault is working. Interestingly, I still do not have a Recover partition so obviously something new for Apple Support to learn.

  • User Tip: MBPr + USB issue and how to recover hard drives.

I did want to share this in case someone runs into this problem:
Since I bought this MPBr in June it has "destroyed" my external USB drives on at least 7 ocassions. By "destroyed" I mean this: Either during a "Wake up failure" or ususally after reboot the drives suddenly were not "recognized" and I would get that dreaded "Initialize, Eject or Ignore" screen we all fear. When it happened and I tried all the standard repair tools (TechTool Pro, Disk Warrior, Data Rescue, etc) most often I ended up wiping the drives since they didn't hold much data, the important stuff safely away inside firewire drives not connected to the MPRr.
    That was until last week.
    A fact checklist:
All the drives were from different makers and different ages (some brand new, some 1-2 years old).  Made no difference.
The drives were both powered and unpowered. Made no difference.
The "destruction" would happen either when the computer went to sleep or simply when trying to use a USB hub.
I tried 5 different USB hub models. All of them did the same thing.
To avoid issues, I was reduced to NOT using USB hubs (or even trying) and unplugging EVERYTHING at the end of the day.
An assistant who was not aware of these problems made the horrible mistake of getting a USB hub and pluging these drives which now held VERY IMPORTANT information, some backed up, some which it had not been backed up yet. Almost INSTANTLY all the drives went bad: Unrecognized. Now, I really couldn't get mad at her because - let's be honest- using a USB hub is not "up there" in the scale of "dangeorus activities" in the computing the world, but it left me  3 dead large size USB drives..And they all had the same problem:
When plugged in, the system would simply not recognize them.
Pluging them into an older mac or another mac had the same response.
In a few occassions the drives would actually appear briefly and disappear again. We are talking seconds here.
NONE of the repair tools could fix them: TechTool Pro, Disk Warrior and fdsk were helpless.
Data Rescue could actually see the partitions greyed out but could not access them
After some digging around it seems whatever is happening with MBPr's USB/Mac OSX/Firmaware is destroying the PARTITION TABLES of USB drives. The data is still there, the system simply cannot access it.
Eventually I came up with the solution which involves recovering the partition tables via Terminal using an open source program TestDisk. The name of "Stellar Phoenix Recovery" software also popped into from time to time (which I do remember from the old days), but I could not find an actual example of a succesful recovery.
    What you will need:
This program runs in the Terminal with a very basic interface that uses arrow keys, enter and a few letters. That said, if you have never used Terminal or are not familiar with the terminology I suggest you find someone who does.
Get the software here: TestDisk - http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk  If everything goes well, this will be the one time you will truly be motivated to donate some cash. The euphory alone will do it. I know it for me, that's for sure.
For my recovery I followed this step-by-step tutorial by Perro Hunter, but BE AWARE that it was written at an earlier date as apparently some of the features that the tutorial mentions as "not working yet" are now.
    http://perrohunter.com/repair-a-mac-os-x-hfs-partition-table/
In my case I did not need to go past step 7, which is good because the warning it gives is pretty  bone-chilling. In my case the software was able to write the recovered partition tables by itself and then when I restarted....the drives were there.  DO NOT IGNORE THE BACK UP AND LOG INSTRUCTIONS. EVER.
Keep in mind that my drives were formatted as Mac OS X HFS+ / GUID partitions. I have no idea how it will work with other types of formatting. The process itself is very fast. if IN DOUBT, just quit terminal and start over (I did twice until I finally figure out what I was doing). Also, take screen shots as you move along the steps it helps.
Needless to say, after recovery use Disk Utility, Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro to get the drives back in shape, and if possible, back up everything and wipe them clean which is what I did just to be sure.
I hope that helps somebody and good luck to you in the process.

Someone tried to follow this information and perro hunter's blog was not loading.

When i clicked on the hard drive in the sidebar that it was only 300gbs, which is the size of my os x partition.
I then went to the partition menu and i could not change anything there. I can't resize anything or repartition anything.
I've tried to do multiple things in terminal from recovery and bootable disk but to no avail. It still won't work. The thing is that when i type diskutil list into terminal i get
    /dev/disk0

/dev/disk0 is the internal hard drive that i want to reformat, /dev/disk1 i don't know what that is. It could be an internal thing in the drive? And /dev/disk2 is my external hard drive that is running mavericks that i writing this on.
I've tried resetting PRAM and SMC but that didn't help.
Didn't know if reinstalling the OS would help?
What i want to get is to reformat /dev/disk0 so that i have a 500gb hard drive that i can then do a clean install of yosemite on and then possibly make an ubuntu partition later. PLEASE HELP!!!

And, this was from the Internet Recovery utilities window, right? OK, this next suggestion depends on which MBA model you have. Check the link below. If your model came with Lion pre-installed then it is capable of using Internet Recovery. If it came with a late version of Snow Leopard it can be upgraded via a firmware update. You will find this in the link below.
Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Once the Utility Menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Now try removing the partition again. If you have the same error, then do the following:
From the screen's menubar select Terminal from the Utilities menu. Enter the following at the prompt:
         diskutil list
Press RETURN. You should see a display of your devices. Next enter:
         diskutil unmountDisk force /dev/disk0
Press RETURN. Now, if this works your internal drive should be unmounted. Return to Disk Utility and try the process of removing the partition.
