Recovery from System Image without 8.1 Installation Medium possible?

Hi guys,
I have Windows 8.1 installed as an upgrade from Windows 8 Pro
(64-bit). Now my hard drive crashed, all data is lost. Fortunately I have a recent system image of the 8.1 installation on a backup drive. However,
I did not make a System Rescue DVD after the upgrade. I understood this was actually discouraged. My fault, but that's
the situation. When I try to restore the installation with the Windows 8 Pro DVD, I get the message that my 8.1 image file ist not compatible. Thanks for any advice!
Ralf

Hi  wittmarf,
Since the hard disk crashed and a new system is installed on your computer, system restore won’t work on the new system. However, you
can recovery the data from the previous system image.
To retrieve the file from former system backup image, you can refer to the link below for the detailed steps:

  • Can't Extract Files from System Image DVD

I recently created a Windows 7 system image onto DVD-RWs as my HDD was suspect.  The HDD was replaced under warranty. When I came to restore the system image I got up to the fourth DVD and the process would not go any further (could not read the DVD).
I then tried to extract some of the more important files from the first three disks that the restore process had read successfully.  I used the AttachVHD option under Computer management however for every .vhd file which I tried to attach I received a "The file or directory is corrupted anf unreadable" error message from the Virtual Disk Manager.
I also tried 7-Zip to extract files but received the message "Can not open file as archive" each time.
Can any one throw any light on why I can't read these .vfd files?

Only last night a user went through the same situation as you are going through. Details are important. For now I am assuming that your computer is Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit. If other post immediately to let me know.
    1. You need two files from Adobe, one .exe and the other .7z. If you have a 64 bit computer operating system
make sure the you see 64 in the name of the file.
    2. Assure that you have antivirus and firewall disabled.
    3. Right click the .exe file and select Run As Administrator. The double click the .exe to Run it. This will lead
you into the 7z which is the program.
If the desktop is not working as the destination for the Adobe Premiere Elements 12 Folder which will be present after the 7z has completed, then set it to Documents.
In the Adobe Premiere Elements 12 Folder, double click the PRE12 Folder to find the Setup.exe from which you will
    install the program.
I will be back in a moment to add the link to last night's thread where we went through what you are going through now.
Make sure at the onset that you have the right files to be used with your specific operating system.
    ATR
Add On...This is last night's thread on this type of issue
Premeire elements 12 will only download as files...

  • Can the 1841 router boot from system image from usbdisk?

I have a cisco1841 router with 32M CF card installed.
Now , i want boot a system image larger 32M from usbdisk.
First  i insert the 128M usb flash disk to the 1841 router and format it, then i can see the device from dir command.
Second copy the larger ios image from tftp to the usb disk and successed,i can see the image with " dir usbflash0:" command.
Third  i use this command "boot system " ,but there is no selection of  "usbflash0: "
Does someone tell me that can the cisco 1841 router  boot the system image from usb disk when reboot the router.
by the way the  System Bootstrap, Version 12.4(13r)T

I have test that , the 1841 router can boot from usb disk。
but there is a problem that when the router reload.
before the second " program load complete.........................."
there is about 3 minutes to wait.
So , the router boot from usb disk take long time than from CF card.
when use usb disk ,the hole progress of reloading the router will take about 300S.
    It's too long .
    Does something wrong?

  • Full recovery from disk "Windows cannot complete the installation"? stuck in loop!

I have a satellite A305-6916 in which the hard drive failed, and I did not have recovery media. I bought a new hard drive, and ordered recovery media. I installed the new hard drive...the old one was a WD 320gig that I replaced with a new WD640gig....and I booted the recovery disc. It went through the whole process for like an hour until it got just past where it said "please wait while windows sets up your computer" and then to the Vista splash screen, and then I got an error message with no number that said " Windows cannot complete the installation. To Install Windows on this computer, restart the installation" Then a message followed about Windows will not operate with the hardware on this computer. Now it just endlessly boots to the first message. I click ok, and it restarts, gets to the splash screen and displays the message. I was running vista 64bit with 4megs of ram. If they sent me the Vista32bit recovery disc, could this be my problem? The disc says it is 64bit????

    Hi R98,
I saw your post and I will be happy to help. Yes, you will need to do this on a different computer. As for the 32 or 64 bit question; you can't tell from the BIOS but you can use certain information to look up the processor but the install will have to go successfully first.

  • New Collection from links/images in current document - is this possible?

Our team includes PC and Mac users.
    We have CS5.5 - InDesign v7.5.3
    I'm currently running Win7
This might be a post for the Bridge forum, but since we want the workflow to begin with InDesign...
I did try searching here, there, and within Exchange forums.
What we'd like to be able to do is open a document in InDesign that has dozens of links, and by some magical autmotaed (or even manual) process, be able to create a collection - not a snippet - of the linked files.  I've tried several ways to get this to happen both from within ID and Bridge, no luck.
    Is there a way?
    Maybe a script?
    -Rick

Thanks for the quick reply.  I don't want to package or export linked images using the "Copy Links to..." option from the links panel.  What either of those options would do would in fact create copies of the images.
Instead, I want to maintain their original locations, maintain links, etc..
So, by the term "collection" in my question what I meant to say is a Bridge Collection (as seen in Bridge or in the Mini Bridge panel).  I want to generate such a collection from the items I choose that already are placed within an InDesign document.  I've attempted selecting from the Links Panel in ID, selecting from the document itself and dragging in to a pre-existing collection, but this seems to only result in an InDesign Snippet file.  I checked contextual menus and panel menus.  I also tried the drag operation with various modifier keys just hoping.    No luck.
I'm thinking there should be a script or plugin for this... but alas have not found it.

  • Is Data recovery from a damaged DVB-3000 COT notebook/laptop possible?

I replaced a  hard drive for a DVB-3000 COT notebook/laptop. There are no additional cables to plug the old drive to attempt data recovery. Are there any external adaptors to attempt data recovery? Will I need software?
Any advise or link is appreciated

    Hi,
If you wish to use your old HDD as an external HDD to recover data, you can use one of the external enclosure like one of these:
      External Enclosures for HDD's
My suggestion, spend few dollars more to get the one with USB 3.0

  • Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) Create a System Image Failure (error code: 0x80780119)

    Hello,
I recently bought a new 1 TB hard drive, and I want to move everything from my original 250 GB to the new one. I have read from numerous sources that Creating a System Image through Windows 7, and then restoring that system image using the Windows 7 OS disc,
is the safest way to do so. My problem lies in creating the system image. I have looked up the error code and found that the usual problem is not having enough space, specifically on the System Reserved partition of the drive.
On the original 250 GB hard drive, the C: partition has 45 GB of free space, while the System Reserved partition has 69 MB of free space. On the new 1 TB hard drive, the only partition has 747 GB of free space (this is because I was originally going to manually
move only certain files, such as games, but halfway I decided that I want to move everything over).
On the 250 GB hard drive, the main partition that houses the OS and my other files is, as I said above, labeled C:. The System Reserved partition, also on the 250 GB hard drive is labeled G:. The only partition on the new 1 TB hard drive is labeled F:.
From what I can tell, based on similar questions and their responses as well as the information given from the system image error, I should be able to create the system image without any problems. When I try to create the image (I check the boxes for both
partitions, C: and G: when asked what drives to create an image of), I receive the same error code, 0x80780119, along with the message about not having enough space on one of the volumes.
I'm all out of ideas, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you for your help,
    Joshua Ratliff

    Hi,
Regarding this issue, try to refer to the following articles which would give you some hints:

  • Remote Install of OEL from DVD image?

I have a linux server that has CentOS 5.3 64 bit installed. I do not have physical access to it. I can't mount a DVD.
But I do have access to ssh, yum and can install anything on it.
Can I download the Oracle Enterprise Linux 64 bit DVD image from OUL Network and install from the image without creating a DVD and putting it in the drive?
    Is there a simple solution?
    Thanks
    SG

Please visit the http://linux.oracle.com site and follow the link to download a new "up2date" RPM package in the "Switching From Red Hat Network" link.
Install it on your server and:
    # /usr/sbin/up2dateand take a nap.
If you do not have a ULN subscription, you can do a network-based install using the:
boot: linux askmethodtechnique; Google for "linux askmethod" for details. There are also detailed steps in the Red Hat installation guide over at http://www.redhat.com if you prefer.

  • System image restore before ever opening cs6 loaded by reseller.

I restored my computer from a system image before registering my product ior creating an adobe id.

I don't know where to start. I bought the computer from a reseller all wiped and loaded with cs6. cs6 showed in my list of programs. after a restore from system image all the cs6 contents are in a folder and there is now right click for RUN to install. I haven't done anything yet I don't want to make a mistake. I don't have a product id or anything but I assume the it at the store did when he loaded it for me as a bonus to seal our deal. I can not ask him for it anylonger.

Is it possible to read just a single character from
System.in without the user having to hit "Enter" to
    accept the character?
Thanks. No, System.in is a stream which only gets things put into it when the user hits Enter. If you want to directly interact with the keyboard (not System.in), then you need a GUI-type of app, or use a 3rd-party API such as you could find if you searched the internet for "java curses".

  • How to uninstall new preference panes from system preferences?

I recently got a new mouse from Logitech, and I installed the downloadable drivers to take advantage of some of the extra features. However, it doesn't work well at all, and it's added a new preference pane titled "Logitech Control Center" that completely overrides my preferences in the "Keyboard and Mouse" settings. Does anyone know how to uninstall new preference panes that are not factory-installed? I noticed that I can right-click the Logitech Control Center icon, and an option comes up for me to "Remove the preference pane," but I'm not sure if this will simply remove the icon from System Preferences without actually uninstalling anything. If anyone can give me some help I'd greatly appreciate it!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It will only remove the pref pane but will not uninstall anything.
I'm not familiar with the Logitech software, but I'd use Spotlight to search for it and delete whatever whatever you find. Or, better yet or use Logitech support.

  • System Image Recovery from Network Drive - not found

    Hello all!
I have been routinely backuping my OS and important files using Windows 7 backup on a NAS. It just so happened that I needed to re-image my OS drive and I got into the Windows 8 recovery boot sequence.
I booted from a windows 8 USB stick and Under the Advanced tools I selected the System Image Recovery and tried to look for the system image on the network path. Although the prompt said it was connecting to the network , the network share was
not found. the command prompt couldn't ping google.com and netsh wlan <SSID> command did not work in hopes of connecting to my local wifi.
Is there a way to connect to the wifi network where my NAS is connected to in order to re-image from the system image found on the NAS? Luckily , there was an older image on a separate local HDD that I could re-image from but I would prefer if
I could connect to the NAS during the recovery process.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
First, I have to say that in WinRE, http and wifi is not supported, that's why you cannot ping google and connect to wifi.
To access NAS, we have to make sure that your network connection is wired, and try to manually location the NAS via
    \\IP address\...
I will check if the Windows 7 image backup can be restored in WinRE of Windows 8, and update your soon.
    Edit:
I have tried this, and it appeared that to restore Windows 7 image backup on this computer from Windows 8 winRE is not supported.
    see following error:

  • Missing partitions after running Recovery from previous System Image Backup in Windows 8.1

After running Recovery from a recent Sytem Image Backup the LRS_ESP partition is now missing and the Used space on the  PBR_DRV partition is reported as 95.20MB while it previously reported 9.52GB in use. The WINRE_DRV, SYSTEM_DRV, Windows8_OS and D:LENOVO partions appear to be OK.
I ran the Recover after replacing the original 500GB HDD with a 1TB. Any details/links/recommendations on recreating/correcting the LRS_ESP and PBR_DRV partitions? Thanks!

Here are the before and after partition details obtained through Partition Wizard:

  • When HP Recovery isn't available... system image using Windows 8 as backup?

Would like to start out with a big shout out to Paul T for his VERY useful thread here !    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-Systems-and-Software/Windows-8-Product-Key-for-Pavilion-G6/m-p/3882966/highlight/false#M205987 A friend's family asked me to work on their laptop since I know more about computers than they do ... they're very good people, was happy to help them out but true to form like a lot of PC users they didn't bother keeping ANY of the documentation that came with the laptop (HP Pavilion g6-2298nr ), nor did they bother to burn recovery DVD's using HP's built in recovery software program that comes standard on the laptops... if I'm interpreting what HP's website had to say about the laptop , model HP Pavilion g6-2298nr, correctly, according to it's serial number it no longer qualifies for free tech support and I'd have to pay HP a fee just to talk to someone and order  the recovery DVD's  (friend's family bought it back in Dec 2014  so to me it seems REALLY strange that I wouldn't be able to just order the recovery DVD's without having to pay tech support a fee just to ask to order  the recover DVD's !  .. but anyways...)...  This is where having the product key "built into" the BIOS really comes in handy !   I crossed my fingers, used the method mentioned in the thread linked above, and it worked !    ... have to admit it was a bit strange at first not using the product key sticker like the old days but I can see how this works better in the long run - helps to prevent piracy, you don't have to worry if someone who doesn't realize the importance of the product key sticker peels it off and throws it away ... Unfortunately it looks like when you reinstall Windows this way you lose the HP Backup and Recovery Program     ... in this case my friend's family had the misfortune of paying someone to repair this laptop who didn't bother to tell them " Hey, I replaced the hard drive that's going bad but if you don't get a laptop cooler for this sucker the laptop's just going to overheat again ! " ... sure enough, the money they paid this so called "tech repair" person went down the drain when the laptop fried a second hard drive, or maybe the tech saddled them with a bad hard drive who knows? (the tech bought an OEM hard drive off ebay) ... ... sorry to sound harsh about this tech guy, I will admit I only worked in the PC repair field for a few months over a decade ago before leaving it to be a stay-at-home-dad (wife is a pharmacist so I'm lucky enough to be able to stay home) so my experience is VERY limited compared to other people .. but back then  I always treated my customers the way I'd treat a friend, and if it's a friend you offer advice on how to prevent problems like this in the future... this laptop gets HOT like you wouldn't believe , I have it sitting on a very reliable laptop cooler (thick slab of aluminum that does a great job as a heatsink with fans, this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834953038 and I've let my friend's family know in no uncertain terms they need to order this laptop cooler if they're going to use this laptop) ...  The hard drive  replacement I installed seems to be working fine but of course it's not an "official WD hard drive" .... when I tried to install the photolink cyberdirector software for example at the link below got  a " this isn't a WD hard drive so can't install this software" error message...  http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-pavilion-g6-2200-notebook-pc-series/5296082/model/5333338#Z7_3054ICK0K8UDA0AQC11TA930O2 which is fine I really don't think my friend's family will care about that program... but it makes me wonder, even if I trusted the download at this link below http://www.techspot.com/downloads/5190-hp-backup-and-recovery-manager.html if the HP Backup and Recovery manager program would even work to begin with since it's not an official WD hard drive (I also ordered an OEM hard  drive  off ebay    .. but not charging my friend's family for the hard drive since they've been good to my munchkins and didn't want them to pay through the nose for a more  expensive hard drive so of course I wanted to minimize my own expenses...)... also I think that sort of program relies on a " C " and " D " drive being set up like it was when the laptop shipped with the original hard drive and saves a backup copy on the " D " drive.. I suppose I could use disk management to create a different partition, label it " D " and see if HP Backup and Recovery worked but it seems a bit.. iffy... not to mention that I feel uncomfortable downloading something that isn't directly on HP's website as an "official" download...  I  know that Windows 8 has a "system image"  utility built into it that lets you make just that.. a system image.. like I said my friend's family are good people but I'm guessing sooner or later they're going to screw this laptop up again like a lot of computer users do .. it would be nice if I could burn a system image of what's on the laptop right now onto DVD and hang onto it so when they come back to me in the future hollering "Help , laptop isn't working again ! " I can just restore from the system image on DVD rather than having to go through the hassle of reinstalling Windows, graphics/audio/et cetera drivers, zillion and one Windows updates et cetera all over  again. What I'm wondering is... would this even work?    I've never tried to use system image in a situation like this with the product key being "built into" the BIOS , that sort of thing is brand new to me... is it worth burning the DVD's and hanging onto them just in case?  Sorry for the long essay and thanks in advance to anyone who actually takes the time to read all of this !

Thanks man it's really helpful to know that someone else has used this exact same method successfully to back up their HP computers !      Will do just that... yep, yep I know it'll be at least 10 DVD's or something crazy like that after all those windows updates download    ... problem with using an external hard drive is I can't convince my friend's family to buy one no matter how many times I warn them it's not "if" your PC gets messed up it's " when "    ..... and my external hard drives are all in use with system image backups of my own PC's ... so will burn the DVD's for 'em then just hang on to them and wait for the inevitable   And thanks for the kind words about my work for them too !    .. it's a lot of effort but they've been super nice to me so it's the least I can do  ... they're actually parents of one of my daughter's best friends and  they've taken my munchkin out to various places and flat out refused to let me pay them back for it so it feels good to be able to help them out this way... though I wish they'd come to me first instead of letting themselves get ripped off by the so called PC tech I mentioned earlier (would it have killed the guy to burn them a set of recovery DVD's?   Heck if he wanted to be selfish and greedy he could have just offered it to them for an "additional fee" but it would have saved them and me a lot of trouble !    Though I'm not sure if the recovery DVD's would cooperate given that it's not an "official HP hard drive" I put in there? ) It occured to me that if I call tech support they probably can't charge me if I don't give them a credit card number   .. so I did (1-888-698-3762).. they said the warranty on this laptop expired Dec 2013 !     Friend's family said they bought it in Dec 2014 from QVC, hope QVC didn't sell them a used laptop !   ... HP wanted over a hundred dollars for an "official" HP hard drive said no thanks to that... HP says despite me putting in a non-HP hard drive that recovery DVD's should work ... HP wanted  $     for recovery DVD's (tried to help me order recovery  DVD's off  HP website, they couldn't find the link on there to them either for some reason... maybe 'cause laptop is an older model??? ) ...  HP asked for thirty dollars (cheapest option!) for recovery DVD's ... but mentioned that if the laptop really was purchased Dec 2014 and if I e-mail them proof of purchase they'll ship out recovery DVD's for free instead since it would be within it's one year warranty period.. I'm waiting on the friend's family to give me the proof of purchase for me to scan and e-mail  to HP ... though I think I'm going to go ahead and use system image to burn the DVD's first THEN run the HP recovery DVD's (if they do in fact turn out ot be free) in case the HP rep made a mistake and the HP recovery DVD's don't like the "unofficial" HP hard drive on this laptop...
