Recovery HD fails to install OS X Lion

I tried reinstalling Lion on my Mac using Recovery HD but it always fails. After failing a couple of times I tried resetting the PRAM but still the same result. I also tried erasing the volume but when it's about to finish I get a message saying that "os x could not be installed. Try again." If you need more info about the situation just ask. I would really appreciate any help, since my MacBook has no OS right now i can't do anything with it.

This may be a bit beyond my expertise, but the first thing that came to my mind is:
So you say your hard drive does not currently have any OS installed - is that correct?
Do you have any bootable backup (clone) or any other external stick, drive, or whatever with a bootable OS on it? If you do not, I don't know that you can recover without being able to boot at all and my only suggestion would be that you make an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar. Hopefully someone will be able to come up with a different idea.

Don't know if this is a Lion only issue or what.  I've sent the full log to palmlevel3.  Hope this keeps someone from ripping their hair out, like I did...
Post relates to: HP TouchPad (WiFi)

this issue was particularly upsetting today, as my phone was at 100% last night, during the night Irene knocked our power out, and apparently something about this drained by battery to only 40% when I woke up. Luckily my laptop is charged, so I can usb charge my phone, but I had hoped to use that later in the day, not first thing in the morning.
hopefully a resolution to this is being worked on.

The recovery disk I just got in and went through the entire process and it still failed to install giving me an error message.

I would suggest attempting the recovery again and follow the instructions in the following link:

Note: if you have any peripherals attached during the recovery it could cause it to fail.

  • Recovery/System Restore-Fresh Install of Mountain Lion

I needed to execute a recovery... wanted to wipe all of my data and install a fresh copy of Mountain Lion. I use an apple Bluetooth keyboard however the "Command-R" functions doesn't work because the keyboard doesn't connect until the Mac until it fully reboots; by then its too late and my desktop is on the screen. The workaround was to use a wired keyboard and hold the Option (Apple Keyboard) or Alt (Windows Keyboard) button until the option came up which allowed me to choose the recovery method.
    Thanks

Thanks for the tip/post, good work!

  • Mac OSX recovery after failing to install Windows?

    Here's the story.
    1) I install the bootcamp assistant and create a 10GB partition.
    2) I burn the drivers CD and click 'install windows'.
    3) The install fails a couple of times.
    4) Finally I'm asked on what partition I want to install Windows.
    5) There is only one choice, which bothers me, but I don't want to start all over again so I take the risk. I also choose the Fast NTFS Formatting.
    6) The Setup continues, then it says: 'this part of the setup has been completed. press any key'.
    7) The screen goes black for a very long time.
    8) I reboot a couple of times. The setup wants to start again from scratch.
    9) Fed up I reboot and press option to use OSX to delete the partition.
    10) A white screen and a cursor appear, yet no options.
    11) When I insert the OSX boot disk, I get an error: "no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key".
    It stays this way.
    - Have I really deleted everything on my HD?
    - Is there a way to recover what I have lost?
    - If not, how can I format my whole HD and delete the partitions as well?

Just an idea for you. There is an entire Apple Discussion forum dedicated to Boot Camp and Windows XP.
Whereas, not everyone here with an Intel iMac has installed, tried to install or has experience with BC & XP, everyone there has or at least has an interest. You may attract help more quickly there.

  • I recently attempted to re-install Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro late 2012 model and the internet recovery is failing.

I recently attempted to re-install Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro late 2012 model and the internet recovery is failing. I have absolutely no clue what to do here. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
    - Currently if I boot it up there is a flashing folder icon with a question mark in it. I am assuming this means there is no OS because I wiped the SSD and tried to reinstall Mountain Lion
    - When I hold Command+R, it prompts me to Choose Network... the problem with this is the wifi constantly is disconnecting. The Retina 2012 does not have an ethernet port so i have considered buying the attachment then returning when done.
Once again Thank you in advance.
    Best.

There is nothing to do if you don't have a reliable Internet connection unless you have a copy of the Mountain Lion installer application from when you first installed it.
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

Mountain Lion fails to install saying it cannot create the recovery; I had a similar problem with Lion and the Apple Store that helped me resolve it gave me an installable version of Mountain Lion on a flash drive for my inconvenience....is there some trick I am missing or do I need to make an appointment with a genius...

I have the MacIntosh volume and the Boot Camp partition only.  I know that when I installed Lion, I had to go through a whole back-up and recovery of Windows and then re-format the drive.
The tech at the Apple Store had a previous life as a MSCE and was very helpful.  I believe he even said that I should not have htis problem with Mountain Lion which is why they gave me the flash with it onboard.  I was in the process of starting a new job when I went to Lion, so I have waited to do this next and probably last upgrade to this old MBP since I doubt Apple will support this MBP in Maverick.
I do not have another installation, so that is not an option.  I will try to create an external, I have plenty of hard drives around and see if I can get it done that way.  It might take me a week or two to get back to it, but I will comment back upon completion of that effort.  Thanks for your help....Dave Iverson

  • Mountain Lion fails to install

I have been trying to install mountain lion for a while now. just donloaded the updated version but it still fails.
it fails after trying to install it and says the system will now restart and return to the previous OS (lion).
I have tried booting to the recovery HD to see what i can do but it just starts installing ML but doesnt seem to go anywhere.
Tried a clean install but it doesnt come up with the options to format, it just tries to install but fails.
If anyone knows of any other options for me to try it would be mighty helpful.

I'm having a similar problem. The update downloaded quickly. It looked small. The computer asked to restart and install. I've been looking at the spinning gray spokes for about an hour. Twice the computer has gone to sleep, and I had to wake it up.
I'm using a FileVault disc protection and I'm afraid of forcing a restart. I'm not sure a full install of mountain lion took this long.... But I was able to walk away from that. Here, it seems to go to sleep on me if I don't periodically poke the keyboard.

When I updated to iOS 8.1 on my iPad 2 it failed when installing it's in recovery mode and when I go to iTunes to restore it downloads the update to about 900 Mbps then gives me error 9006

    Hi Willy,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The article below provides information about specific update and restore alerts, including the 9006 alert that you saw when attempting to update your iPad 2 to iOS 8.1. Try using the instructions provided to see if the issue is caused by a conflict with the security software on your computer.
Resolve iOS update and restore errors
    Check your security software
Related errors: 2, 4, 6, 9, 1000, 1611, 9006. Sometimes security software can prevent your device from communicating with either the Apple update server or with your device.
Check your security software and settings to make sure that they aren't preventing a connection to the Apple servers.
    I hope this helps,

  • OSX Mountain Lion fails to install on 2009/2010 MacPro

I have a Dual Xeon dual cores MACPro and just got the new OS however it fails to install on the MACPro with the error message  "Mountain Lion is not compatible with this computer"
My current OS is 10.7.4, does anyone have any imput on this issue has this been seen by anyone else?
    Any help would be apreciated.

Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
I'm guessing that you have a Mac Pro 1,1 or 2,1 model from 2006/7. They cannot run Mountain Lion.

  • Mountain Lion Failed to Install

In the middle of the install OSX mountain lion jumps to a recovery screen and cancels the install. When I restart the computer I am able to go right back to my normal desktop with nothing lost.
Any thoughts- There is no error message.

I'm having a similar problem installing Mountain Lion on my older MacBook Pro (mid to late 2007).  When I begin the install and choose my internal HD, I get the message "This disk is used for Time Machine backups."  That's not true - I have Time Machine completely turned off.  I've gone to Disk Utility and used Verify and Repair Disk. It did some repairs and now shows that the disk is fixed. However, the new system will still not install. I don't have File Vault on either.  Any suggestions for me?

  • Rescue and Recovery FAILS TO INSTALL!!!

I just installed windows, and every time I try to install Rescue and Recovery, it fails, I have tried running it as administrator, tried redownloading it... Nothing works, I cant install it from safe-mode because the services it starts, obviously, arent allowed to start. It never goes to a not-responding state, it just sits there... and I have let it run for 2 hours, and it never goes anywhere. Anyone have this issue or a fix for it. Its on a thinkpad T61p 6460-8WU, Vista Ultimate (not business). Help?
EDIT: I downloaded RnR 4.2 and instead of the above I get, There is not enough space on the computer to Install or Upgrade the Rescue and Recovery environment. And on various places the suggested fix is to "remove the secondary harddrive" well, I dont have a secondary hard drive, I tried it after taking out the cd drive and rebooting and still no dice. This is frustrating.
Message Edited by hibrad2005 on 04-24-2008 11:58 AM

I had the same problem trying to install R & R 4.2 (I had 4.0 already installed). I was told that the
"not enough space" referred to the hidden service partition, and that should be 4 Gb on my 80 Gb hard
disk. I had my hard disk repartitioned to make it so, and R & R 4.2 then installed properly.
That 4 Gb partition now shows 3.58 Gb free space, so making it 4 Gb was a little bit of overkill.

  • Troubel whit installing Mac os Lion, cant innstall osLion on this machine because no recovery

How do I install mac os lion? get the fault message cant insall mac os on this machine. no recovery

What to do if the installer warns that no Recovery HD can be created
Some disk partition configurations may result in the OS X Lion installer reporting that it could not create a Recovery HD. In these situations, even if you are permitted to continue the install, you should quit the install and create an external, bootable OS X Lion hard drive with a Recovery HD, first. You will be able to return to the upgrade to OS X Lion on your computer's boot drive after creating the external Recovery HD.
    Important notes
Your storage device must have at least 13 GB available (after formatting) to install Lion and an Internet Restore partition.
These steps will erase and reformat the storage device. This article will instruct you on setting up the storage device to use the GUID partition scheme and the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, which are required to install Lion and an Internet Restore partition on your external storage device. You should back up any important files that are on the device to a different drive.
This procedure will install a version of the OS X Lion that is compatible with the Mac it was created with. Using this Lion system with a different kind of Mac may produce unpredictable results.
Your computer's serial number will be sent to Apple to help authenticate your request to download and install OS X Lion.

  • Cannot redownload Moutain lion installer after a corruptd intaller failed to install.

    Hi All,
I'm trying to upgrade to Mountain lion from Lion (10.7.4)
Here is what I have done so far.
I downloaded Mountain Lion but the corrupted installer failed to install.
It suggested to delete the copy and go to puchases on App store and redownload it.
But the App store's "downloaded" button did not change to "install" after moving the installer app to trash.
So I emptied the trash and restarted my macbook and went to App store.
This time, it showed "Buy App" button instead of "Downloaded" so I clicked it and it said I purchased the OS and suggested to redownload after clicking "ok" to the  popup.
It started downloading but finished it in 2 seconds without actually downloading and installing and then the button goes to "installed" on purchases on App store.
What am I supposed to do? How do I redownload the OS and install it.
    Please help.
    Young

I talked to the technical support at Apple and he couldn't figure it out either.
I keep seeing downloading finishes in a second and the button changes to "downloaded".
I see OS X Mountain Lion icon at Lauchpad with progress bar showing full and just hanging there.
    Update
I'm noticing after some minutes I see it silently completes downloading and 4.31 GB installer is put into Applications folder. Then it starts installation but I get the following error msg.
"This copy of the Install OS X Mountain Lion.app application can't be verified. It may have been corrupted or tampered with during downloading."
I'm not so sure whether the downloaded installer is actually 4.31GB long file because downloading seems taking less than 10 minutes which I think is too short to download the whole thing even at my work with fast internet speed.
    Any new ideas?
