Red light - network accounts

Hi
My server is an Apple Intel Xserve running 10.5.8
I have cloned this to a test system and am testing upgrading/migration etc to 10.6.3 .
The server auto migration has given me no end of probs, so have discarded that for the moment. (Haven't looked at manual migration yet)
The upgrade method seems to have worked successfully.
All services seem to be up.
However - Using a 10.6 client - The "Networked accounts" is showing green and available and I can log in as a "user"
but
A 10.4 user (and I have a few for legacy reasons) binds to the Server in LDAP and can be seen in WGM in computers.
I can also see the correct search paths on the client.
But "networked accounts" is showing RED and I cannot login as a "user"
Any help that can be offered would be appreciated
Tony

I have no idea how to keep it connected, but you should have no problems logging back in to the network.  The upside to haveing the WIFI shut down when you are logged out is that nobody can remotely connect to your system over WIFI.  A wired ethernet connection remains active.
The red light is more informative that indicating you have a problem.  I have the same symptoms with my work network and have no problems.  The network accounts problem is for those that are setup to have no local login and require a network connection for authentication.  Is this what you have?

    Hello NotAppleSavy,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like the computer wont connect to networks. I see you have used network diagnostic. I would recommend that you read this article, there are a lot of other things you can do in this article that may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.

  • Network Accounts - Red Dot disappeared?

    Afternoon all
We have 12x iMacs on an Active Directory network. We have the usual 1-2 minute wait after boot before network accounts are available - however 10.8 gave us that red dot that clears once accounts are available, but in Mavericks there's a pop-up warning that disappears, but no red dot, so you can't tell when the problem has cleared and when you are able to log on.
Is this an option or has it been removed entirely?
    Thanks, Tom

I do believe it's fairly normal... one of the crazy things about a fully cooperative multitasking OS, it can try to connect before the Interfaces are up & ready.
Found a work-around. This command adds a delay, in this case 45 seconds, before displaying the Login Window.
defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow StartupDelay -int 45
If the Login Window UI detects that the network servers are available when it starts, it will skip the delay, also if network servers become available before the delay expires, the Login Window UI cancels the delay and displays.

I have a Samsung Network Extender, model SCS-2U01, and for the past two weeks, the SYS light has gone from solid blue to a blinking red light, disconnecting me from my business calls. In reading the forums, it was mentioned that Verizon had to reset something on their end to fix the issue. Would you be able to confirm if something needs to be reset to fix the issue? Thank you!

First, try the normal stuff: power cycle your modem, router, and NE allowing time for each component to stabilize before turning on the next in sequence modem > router > NE. If necessary, try resetting your modem and router. If it still doesn’t work verify it is listed in MyVerizon and then calling Verizon Wireless Customer Service at (800) 922-0204. Good luck!

I have Realteks network card, I modprobe the 8139too, and I see red light on the card and it is not shown on ifconfig. What that red light means?

  • Network Accounts Available Indicator

I need to better understand the "Network Accounts Available" indicator light. We have eMacs and put in new Cisco GB switches. When we start from a cold boot, it usually takes about 3 -4 minutes for this indicator light to turn from red to green. If I turn AFP off on the XServe, it still takes the same amount of time for this indicator light to change but if you try to log in, you cannot do it because AFP is turned off. I understand that the users cannot login because AFP is disabled. We tried to force the switch and the workstation to 100baseTX / full-duplex and there were not any consistent changes in time.
So my question is, what exactly is it telling us? Is it the time it takes to establish a connection from the eMac to the server? Is it the amount of time it takes to auto-negotiate to the first switch that it is connected? Is it an issue that the NIC card is having trying to auto-negotiate with a Gigabit switch? I really need some input because we are starting to put more Gigabit switches in our schools and we still have a lot of eMacs.
All responses are more than welcome.
    Our hardware is:
    eMacs - OS 10.4.6 - 10.4.11, 256 or 512 MB RAM, 1GB PPC processor
    Switches - Cisco 3560, 4500, & 6500
Server - OS 10.4.11, 2 GB RAM, PowerPC G4 processor

Is the Ethernet Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations? That is the search order for connections.
Do you have proper DNS Servers & Search Domain entered in the Network>TCP/IP tab for Ethernet?

I'm having exact same error code right after updating imac to 10.5.6 from 10.5.4. Trying to save to 10.4.11 server running basic file sharing (not server version) produces error: "The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in xxxx could not be read or written. (Error code -36)."
Transfering a file to the network volume produces a stall for about 2 minutes with no visible warning or spinning beachball, then comes back with error.
I'm able to create a folder on the remote volume, have double checked permissions, and copying from remote volume works fine.

  • Active Directory - Network Accounts Unavailable after reboot

The issue I'm having with Snow Leopard is that I can bind accounts to AD and on the first boot it works perfectly. It shows Network Accounts Available and I can login using an AD account. After I reboot and on every boot after the first it then shows Network Accounts Unavailable. I logged in as local admin and it shows it is bound to the domain and it has a green light under the Directory Utility for the domain.
Here are the main bits of info regarding this problem:
    1. Computer is bound to domain on first boot using Deploy Studio's firstboot script. This works brilliantly on 10.5 and only became a problem on 10.6.
    2. On first boot, it binds to the domain correctly and shows Network Accounts Available. I can log in using a network account and everything is peachy.
    3. If I reboot the machine, the status on the loginbox changes to Network Accounts Unavailable and has a red light.
    4. If I've logged in to an AD account on first boot, it will log in even with the red light present (it is a mobile account). This is working properly.
    5. If I try to log in using an account that has never logged in before, it will not log it in.
    6. If I login in as local admin and check the Directory Utility, it shows the machine as being properly bound to the domain and has a green light even thought the login box shows a red one.
These are all the facts surrounding this issue that I have at the moment. I am booting up a 10.5 image right now that is freshly imaged and will report back its behavior using the same AD binding script that is being used on the 10.6 image.

Quick Update on the 10.5 AD Binding test I said I was doing.
Every time I reboot on 10.5, it says Network Accounts Unavailable for a few seconds and then switches to Network Accounts Available.
On Snow Leopard, it never switches to Network Accounts Available, it stays stuck on unavailable.
    Thanks in advance,
    Nate

  • Lion Clients 10.7.4 show network accounts are unavailable and server is not responding when binding to Snow Leopard server 10.6.8

    Hello,
I am running Snow Leopard Server 10.6.8 and my clients are Lion 10.7.4.  While testing I had no issues binding 10.7.4 to our 10.6.8 server's OD.  I created a 10.7.4 image to push to all of our machines and in the beginning of last week I was able to push the image and get the machines to bind with OD and apply preferences on these machines through workgroup manager.  Towards the end of the week though this stopped working.  Now any time I bind a 10.7.4 client to OD it allows me to perform an authenticated bind and the machine shows up in workgroup manager but immediatley after binding the client the status jelly next to the OD server in the directory list is red and says "This server is not responding".  If I reboot the client I get a notification that "Network accounts are unavailable" at the login screen.  My preferences from workgroup manager are also not applying, which is my main concern because without workgroup manager my mac server is somewhat pointless as we use it for very little else.
I've since tried to bind a snow leopard machine (10.6.8) and this still is working with a green status jelly.  I've also built a lion machine from scratch, updated to the 10.7.4 combined update and am still getting the same issue where it shows the server is not responding when binding to OD.  I then applied the subsiquent OS update after the 10.7.4 combined update but the problem still persists.
Is anyone else having this issue?  Any help would help me keep my sanity.
    Thanks,
    Dane

Have you had any luck finding a solution to this?  The only thing I have found was to unbind and then bind without authentication.  Any help with progress on your end would be appreciated!
    Nick.

  • Cannot log into windows network account after Bootcamp install

    Hi All,
I have a 27" Intel i3 iMac with Mountain Lion 10.8.7. Its connected to a windows server. To access my account on the Mac I log in with a username and password. Yesterday I had Bootcamp with a 32bit version of Windows installed. After the Windows was installed successfully, my 'Helpdesk' had to remote access in and run patches on the windows installation. All good so far.
I tried to log into my mac account this morning with username and password. There is a little red light beside your username. I had no luck what so ever. My account has vanished of my mac. I could 'locally' log in under the adminstrator account. There was no sign of my account in the users & groups.
I had back upped my files except for the download folder. I eventually found the download folder and was able to back that up.
please please can someone explain what has happened here.
My IT guy has no Apple trianing and wants to remove my mac and replace it with the a PC because they support them. I feel it was a bad bootcamp installtion done by the IT tech, he did mention that he installed a 32 bit windows instead of a 64 bit. Its lack of trainign and understanding that has caused this.
I am trying to make an argument to say that it was simplay a bad Bootcamp installtion and try and find simliar cases to back it up.
    Please help

Mac partition was still there as I was able to log into the Administrator account on the mac. But when I went into users and groups there was no sign of my account. I'll agree it was a bad install, jsut need to explain it and back it up so that I can make that argument.

    Hey panda1111,
Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
    Thanks for the question.
Follow the steps below to try and bring the BlackBerry Z10 back to life:
Ensure that BlackBerry Link is installed on the PC or Mac OS
Ensure the computer has an internet connection.
    Launch the BlackBerry Link Software.
Note: A backup of the BlackBerry device should be tried before a reload.
Turn off the BlackBerry device. Make sure there are no flashing LEDs and that the LCD is not still being lit by the backlight. If there are any flashing LEDs, hold the power button for 15 seconds until the LEDs stop.
Connect the BlackBerry device to the computer.
When prompted with Cannot communicate with device, click Restore and then click yes allow the update to be downloaded and installed on the BlackBerry device.
If the restore button is not seen press the vertical dots in the lower right corner of BlackBerry Link and select disconnected device.  Highlight the disconnected device you are working with and attempt steps 4 to 6 again.
If the issue still persists, then I suggest contacting your network service provider for repair options.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
    Cheers.

  • Skype Video calling - red light but no video

I did a search but couldn't find anything on the boards. If I initiate or receive a video call, the red light comes on and a black box where the picture should be, but nothing shows up. The audio works fine, but not the video. Is there a setting i need to activate or something?

take a look at the top 12 thread i made. one of them is detailed on how to do skype.
    @richwhite
check the network you are on and be sure it is 3/3.5G as the video sometimes takes a while...even if on 3G. depends on the data connection. even though you may be connected 3/3.5g...not all areas of the network have the same data speeds.
also, if you have the cssu installed. it seems it takes a bit longer then before the cssu. may just be my unit.

  • Red Light in Server.app Website Pane

Hi, newbie here. Am I doing something wrong in that I get this red light in the below screen shot? Confused.
    https://dl.dropbox.com/u/451249/mdmimagehost/murraysorg.png
    Thank you for any insight!

    Hi Matthew,
quick question - there is your server and its plugged directly into the internet modem ( no intervening router or nat translaltion and your server is doing nat and dhcp for your local network? Is that correct as per the line under ?
Internet <--> Modem in bridge mode  <-> Server  - with Internet IP Address
    or is it ?
Internet <--> Modem / Router <--- > Server  - with internal ip address
Re your questions - The Server name can stay, but the hostname should be something like familyserver.murray.org under network settings. because technically, "murray.org." is a Fully Qualified Domain Name. not Host Name!  Its a convention to give a machine a name under the FQDN.
Also - No Green Light as opposed to a grey light when you enter your site under websites may mean - its kind of working, but you may get funny results - Try setting up as below and see how that goes, it will likely save problems in the long run.
Change the hostname in Server.app/Server/Network Settings to be a familyserver.domain.org style.
Then under DNS on server.app, the Primary Zone should be "murray.org".
Then add a Machine record to match the hostname - familyserver.murray.org
Then add a nameserver record in the zone - familyserver.murray.org
Then add an MX record in the zone for familyserver.murray.org
Then add an alias record in the zone for www
Then delete / re-add your website and you should get a green light.
    cheers

  • LDAP Authentication "Network Accounts Unavailable" on 10.8

    Hello,
We've been successfully authenticating against our LDAP servers on our 10.6.8 machines without any problems. I've setup a test machine running 10.8 to see if we will have any issues when it comes time to upgrade our lab OSs. I setup our LDAP authentication on the machine as per our usual methods. I get the "Green Light" in the Users/Groups preferences pane that our LDAP server is found. I can search through our LDAP users in the Directory Editor and I can access LDAP user accounts through terminal.
My problem is at the login screen it tells me "Network Accounts Unavailable". This seems contradictory as when I'm logged into a local account, I can access our LDAP server. It seems to work everywhere except at the login screen.
I've tried this openLDAP fix: http://iwatts.blogspot.ca/2012/01/osx-1072-openldap-authentication.html
    No luck.
    Any ideas?

I see the same problem as a result of having the same UID number for both my local account and my LDAP account although the account names are different.  It appears that upon providing the correct login/password  to the LDAP server, 10.8 looks at the returned UID , identifies it as the same as a local UID and then rejects the login.
A security measure I want to work around but perhaps there is a better way of accessing both my local and LDAP accounts but keeping it as easy as it would be if both accounts had the same UID.
