Red one footage to dvd?

What settings do y'all use in Compressor?
I'm doing a short film, so I upped the avg bit rate to 6.7 and a max of 7.7 (can I go higher safely?) and set the resize filter to Best as well as Best deinterlace. Everything else I left alone.

With a variable bit rate I would never set the max above 8 and always use AC3 audio.
I have had things turn out well with an average of 6.5 and peak of 7.7.
This is presuming you don't have more than 75 minutes or so.
You could also try a CBR at 7.0.
I doubt you will see a large improvement with the footage no matter what setting you use.
We sometimes have problems with Compressor doing the HD-SD conversion. It is consistently inconsistent. It doesn't look good, lots of interlacing in high motion sections. The best frame control settings have addressed some of this but the render times were off the chart.
We use a Kona card to do the down-convert and then encode our SD roll-off with a hardware encoder for the best results. We have also rolled the SD back in and then exported to Compressor. If you do not have the time or a Kona card I would say it is not going to get any better.
What about a red laser Blu-Ray? If you have FC Studio 3 you can do this through share and depending on the length it could very well fit on a DVD-5. The generic settings in compressor are about 140MB a minute. You can also adjust the data rate down and the red laser BRDVD-Rs should play in most if not all BR players.

  • Importing red one  footage with final Cut 6

Im getting an error message saying file type is to new for final cut to recognize. Iv'e downloaded the latest red one codec and installed it but I can't believe I won't be able to see the footage on FC6? Am I really going to have to upgrade to 7?

I would do the transcoding to ProRes 422 in Redcine-X. Then import those files into FCP. It works better than FCP's Log and Transfer when working with RED footage. You have more options for transcoding.

  • Picture stretched after outputting edit of Red One footage

I exported edit of Red footage to self contained Quicktime and movie looks beautiful. However, when I used Quicktime file as source in DVD Pro or Compressor, the picture is slightly stretched vertically and there is bad artifacting. I noticed that the Quicktime file frame size is 2048x1024 (2:1 aspect ratio). I used log & tranfer ProRes 422 (16:9 aspect ratio) to capture footage and same sequence settings to edit. It looked great in FCP. What the heck am I doing wrong?! Why the difference in the aspect ratios?

Actually, I have been informed that the RED whitepaper I used to guide me through the process of ingesting and editing in FCP was incorrect. They assume that everyone shoots at a 2:1 aspect ratio. My DP shot at 16:9. So, per RED instructions, I customized a ProRes 422 (HQ) codec by changing the aspect ratio to 2048x1024 (2:1 ratio)....WRONG!! If I had been more experienced, I would have questioned that spec immediately. FCP compensated by cropping the top and bottom. I didn't notice the blue guides missing at the top and bottom until someone asked me if I could see them. In short, I've solved the stretch problem. But I still have really bad artifacting in the MPEG2 files created for DVD. I'm trying to figure out why that's happening. Also, I uploaded a web version of the short film and heard ringing in the soundtrack where there was music playing. My audio in the FCP edit is at 48Mhz and the output file is 44Mhz. Could that be a problem?

  • RED One camera: is someone using it and how?

I'm curious to find out more about users editing RED One footage in Final Cut Pro on Mac. All I saw was a demo at the Apple booth at IBC in Amsterdam in September.
I browsed their MacPro a bit but I couldn'f figure out what RAW images were used.
    What are the REDCODE experiences?
    What are the prores results?

One very cool thing is that the RED Camera creates quicktime wrappers for it's native .R3D files so that you can immediately watch back the 4K clips by using proxy files. So if you have, say, a MacBook Pro on set when you are shooting, you can download the files from the memory card and view them in realtime using a 2K, 1K, or .5K proxy.
Here is another independent RED Camera forum with quite a bit of information:

  • RED ONE 4.5K footage is darker when paused

Computer: Macbook Pro 2.5ghz Intel Core Duo
    OS: 10.6.4
    Running: Final Cut Pro 7.0.3
Using footage transcoded from RED ONE Rushes
When I import .mov files that are half-res 422 ProRes HQ compressed file of a RED ONE 4.5k Wide original, I find that my footage is darker when paused. When I press play the film lightens a bit while playing until I stop it. I feel like this has something to do with the quicktime Gamma Shift from the new version of Quicktime X. I do not notice this problem when I open the files in quicktime pro 7.6.6. I had Quicktime X, but deleted it because I thought it may have been causing the problem.
This problem does not happen to my half-res 422 ProRes HQ compressed file from 2k footage, only the 4.5k wide. This is weird because the same footage playing on the same version of FCP on a tower works fine at my school. It is only this computer that seems to be weird.

This isn't the gamma shift issue, this is typical of playback on footage that is high res played back on slow drives. This won't show up on an external monitor connected via a capture card.

    Shane's Stock Answer #2: Blurry/Low Quality playback
ONLY JUDGE THE QUALITY OF YOUR MATERIAL ON AN EXTERNAL BROADCAST MONITOR, OR AT LEAST A TV.
Video playback requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the video data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. However, the footage is still at full quality, and is best viewed thru a TV or broadcast monitor.

  • RED ONE camera to FCP to compressor for DVD

My client used RED ONE camera for filming. He used FCP to edit it then exported it in 1920x1080 Apple ProRes 422 (HQ). He sent it to me by mail (external HD) for me to use that QT movie Apple ProRes 422 for Compressor to compress it into SD DVD MPEG-2 5.0 2-pass with Progressive (Best Quality). I used DVD Studio Pro and found it very unsatisfied with the quality of video because I'm seeing a lot of pixels around those letters during open/close credits. Not only that, I also see a lot of bad interlaced video. I set it up for Progressive and YET I'm still seeing interlaced in it. What's did I do wrong? How can I make it the best quality video for SD DVD from Red One camera or Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)? I know Blue-ray is the best answer but a lot of my costumers don't own blue-ray dvd player. (I'm sure you're aware that HD DVD don't work on any DVD players, only on Mac computer which is very unfortunate for me!) Please help! I'm flirting the deadline right now:)

    1. Take your sequence into an uncompressed 720x480 16x9 anamorphic sequence. It needs to be 720x480 first since thats the resolution of NTSC DVD - create a 720x480 uncompressed 16x9 anamorphic sequence
    2. With a bitrate calculator, you would need to determine the best bitrate. How long is your DVD? (include menus as well) plug it into the calc. here's a good one:
    http://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm
    3. Export out through compressor as an MPEG2 file and the bitrates from above. make sure you match field order of your source if interlaced
    4. Import into DVDSP and author away

  • Online in FCP with Red One

I am trying to do online with footage from RED One in FCP (uncompressed files). There is no way to playback in realtime. Is this not possible at all? Firewire 800 harddisk.
I am sending to Lustre for grading so I cannot use ProRes..have to use uncompressed. Any tips or tricks?

Proxy editing is used for editing RED in FCP using the REDCODE plugin which will allow playback.
There is a complete FCP workflow description and very detailed instructions for system requirements, etc., on the RED site:
    http://www.red.com/workflow
    http://www.red.com/support
lots of useful information about FCP editing workflows over on the RED forums:
    http://www.reduser.net
    http://www.redcamcentral.com
Otherwise, to use native R3D files, you'll need to something like RED Alert for the Mac.
I'm sure better RED support in FCP is coming, but right now 4K uncompressed editing requires brute strength. It's possible that you may be able to use something like SheerVideo to lower your overhead.
In any case, I would check the RED site and forums first, and verify exactly what kind of "uncompressed" files your Lustre artist needs.

I am making multiple DVD's of roughly 50 hours of footage on DVD Studio pro with 4 separate menus for 4 different 'parts' or series if you will. 50 hours - 20 episodes - 4 parts of 5 episodes each. What are my options in terms of burning these parts on to separate DVD's, what is the process, what size DVD RW should I buy, what bitrate should I use, and what quality I should expect for the burn. Any advice or insight is welcome.

    >>What are my options in terms of burning these parts on to separate DVD's<<
20 episodes totaling 50 hours equals about 2.5 hours per episode assuming all episodes have the same duration.  Fitting 2.5 hours onto one single layer DVD would require a low bit rate which means quality wouldn't be anywhere near best, but that's a judgement call you'll have to make based on several factors.  For example; if there is not much motion in the video (talking heads, etc), you can get by with a lower bit rate and may not notice any quality difference.
    >>what is the process>>
The process is essentially the same as it is when authoring a regular DVD with 2 hours or less of content.  However, with as many discs as you'd need to complete this "set," you'll need to create a separate DVD Studio Project for each disc.  Basically, you'd use one of Compressor's DVD Presets (or customize a preset) to create an MPEG--2 video file (.m2v) and a Dolby Digital audio file (.AC3).  Import both of those assets into your DVD Studio Pro project for authoring and burning.
If you want to keep one episode per disc, DVD Studio Pro does have a 150 minute preset or you could use dual-layer discs with a higher bit rate for better quality.  Again; your call.
    >>what size DVD RW should I buy<<
Size?  12cm.  Capacity?  Single layer, single sided DVD discs (DVD-5) have a rated capacity of 4.7Gb (4.37Gb actual), including menus.  If you use single layer discs and want to keep the quality reasonably good, you'd need at least 50 discs to complete this "set" with each disc holding roughly 2 hours of footage if you keep the menu on each disc simple.  Or, you could use dual-layer discs (DVD-9) which have a capacity of about 7.95Gb - almost doubling the recordable capacity.  There are also dual-sided, dual-layer discs available (DVD-18) but they are relatively expensive and have to be manually turned over to continue playback ... but they do have roughly 15.9Gb capacity.
    >>what bitrate should I use, and what quality I should expect for the burn<<
Exactly; the quality is dependent on the bit rate chosen, as well as the quality of the compression.  Using compression markers where needed can greatly increase the quality of playback but will most likely increase the file size of the compressed video.  For the best quality, keeping the bit rate  as high as possible allowed under the DVD specification will yield the best quality but some DVD players may choke if the bit rate is too high.  For best quality I typically aim for a bit rate around 7.6 to 8.0Mbps but that will only allow about one hour of footage.
Naturally, if you decrease the bit rate, you can fit more footage onto the disc but quality will be sacraficed.   Here's a chart approximating DVD bit rates and durations for single layer discs (does not include space for menus):
    3.5Mbps - 120 minutes
    5.0Mbps -   95 minutes
    6.0Mbps -   82 minutes
    7.6Mbps -   65 minutes
    8.0Mbps -   60 minutes

  • Importing RED camera footage into CS4

I've downloaded a plug in for CS4 and all the other RED camera footage imported in fine (9 out of 10 files) expect for the last file. Here's a picture of the file names:

The file marked A010_C001_10172V_001.R3D is the one that should import into Premiere Cs4 but as you can tell from the screen shot above, it will not.

  • RED ONE Standards Coversion for FCP

I have an underwater photographer shooting on a RED ONE and he wants to shoot 25 as he is in Australia which is PAL. The footage is being shared between us, but we will be editing in FCP in an HD NTSC 29.97 sequence to match our other footage.
Is converting from 29.97 to 25 or 25 to 29.97 a better option? Or is there a better shooting mode that will convert to both better?

If you shoot 25p, you can conform the footage in Cinema Tools to 23.98fps, and add 3:2 pulldown to get it to 29.97fps for NTSC timeline.
If you shoot 24p (23.98fps default on the RED) you can just added 3:2 pulldown to get to 29.97fps for NTSC timeline.
    Either way will work fine.
To add 3:2 pulldown, you can output a 24p timeline to tape in FCP, or you add it with a render process using one of my plugins for instance. I'd avoid placing 24p directly onto a NTSC timeline as that just dupes frames in FCP and tends to look bad.
Is there a need for the final product to also go to PAL? If so, what is the exact format of the HD footage on the 29.97fps timeline? For dual PAL / NTSC production, it's usually best to keep everything 24p / 25p as via conform and pulldown you can go either way with minimal picture quality issues.

  • Square pixel footage to DVD - scale and quality problems

i've got footage from DVDs that i've captured using handbrake. This gives me quicktime movies (mp4 format) that are 720 by whatever the height of the original movie - minus the black bars. So for a letterbox clip that i've captures the dimensions are 720 x 336.
I want to edit the clip in final cut pro and burn back onto DVD. The mp4 clip has been ripped using a high data rate and the quality is fine. If I set up the sequence settings to be identical to the clip (720 x 336, square pixels, field dominance none, output mp4) then it looks fine in fcp and doesn't need rendering.
But this file is no good to use in DVD studio pro as it stretches the clip vertially to meet the 720 x 576 DVD resolution.
If i change the sequence resolution to 720x576 it seems to letterbox it fine and now it needs rendering, but when rendered i get a lot of boxy artifacts appearing in the video (the footage has a pure blue background so really suffers from any compression issues)
How do i set this up to make a DVD
    DP Mirror door G4 867Mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Arrrrrrr!
Sounds like we have arrrrselves a pirate!
Wether it be 4:3 or 16:9 you'll have to be puttin' that footage in a sequence that studio pro will be able to digest. You're going to have the bars regardless.
Figure on making it right for your final output.
I guess it's some kind of TV.
Still you can put it one of those two conver to MPEG2 and it'll work for ya just fine.

  • Permanent vertical blue line the screen and a red one has just popped up too. What does it mean and how can I get rid of them?

I have had a permanent vertical blue line on the right side of my imac screen for some time now.  It does not affect the use of the computer.  A red one has popped up on the right side of the screen and is not going away either.
Would you know why these are appearing and perhaps how to get rid of them please?
    Thank you in advance

Best guess is that either your GPU or LCD is failing. You should take it to the nearest Apple Store or AASP for proper diagnostic. Once you know what the problem is you can decide wether or not it's worth repairing.

  • Can I use Red Cam footage in FCE4

An actor friend of mine has shot a short film with a Red Cam and wants me to edit it.  I assume I'll have to convert it, but can I bring that footage into FCE4, and if so what codec should I use?  And how do I convert it, what program should be used.  When I'm finished editing what codec should I use to export it.  He wants to enter this film in some festivals so we want the quality to be as good as possible.  How will the finished exported quality compare to the original Red Cam footage?  I assume there will be a quality loss, but how much?  And are there any other issues I should be aware of?  Thanks very much--jqs

I don't know whether it will work with some sort of workflow that substitutes AIC foor Pro Res or not. I referred  you to the FCP article so you would see there are a number of moving parts involved. Although I don't know of FCE users editing RED, that's not to say it can't be done. Try some work-arounds and see (and let us know). Alternatively If you know someone with FCP, possibly they would allow you to cut it on their system?
    Good luck.

BTW, I don't think it's possible to unmark this question as solved. If you're not getting views because people assume it's closed, you could always post another question.

  • Fit 3 hours of low-quality video on to one 4.7 DVD ?

I am using Encore DVD 2.0. I have 206 minutes of low-quality video I'd like to fit onto one 4.7G DVD. I would much rather sacrifice quality to get it all on one disc. The source files are mpeg-2 totaling 8 GB. Setting the transcode settings to Automatic and building the disc, I get the error that the resulting bitrate would be below Encore's 2 mbps minimum so the build fails.
Strangely, though, in two different projects now, if I keep trying to build, restarting Encore, etc, it will eventually transcode and build anyway, but I have no idea what I did to make it work.
Using a bitrate calculator with 2 channels of 192kbps dolby digital audio and 206 mins of video, it says an average bitrate of 2.5 should work.
Also, I see in the Transcode presets window that the bitrate can be set as low as 1.5. Encore help also says 2.0 is the minimum.
Also, what does the "Quality" slider under Basic Settings mean? Is that a bitrate setting or something else?
    Any insights?? Thanks!!

You do have an option, but the quality cannot be guaranteed.
    Create a DVD9 folder instead of a DVD5 disc.
Find & download a copy of DVDShrink.
Load the folder into this, and reduce to fit on a DVD5 - if the bitrate can be sufficiently lowered.
