Ref Cursor from PL/SQL Table

I'm building a complex report in which the information cames from a lot of tables and needs complex formatting. I'd like to base my report in a table returned by a stored procedure (like you can do in Forms). Is there any way to convert an PL/SQL table in a Ref Cursor?

Why don't you process the data in procedure and dump into temporary table. And base your report on that temporary table.
it may simplify your report.

    And if I run the same thing on 10g -- all goes conversely. The first part runs ok, and the second
    part reports "ORA-01006: bind variable does not exist" (as it should be, I think). Remember, there
    is ONE bind variable in sql, not two. Is it a bug in 8i?
    What should we do to avoid this error running the same plsql program code on different Oracle
    versions?
    P.S. Thank you for your invaluable work on this site.
    Followup   June 9, 2005 - 6pm US/Eastern:
    what is the purpose of this query really?
    but it would appear to be a bug in 8i (since it should need but one).  You will have to work that
    via support. I changed the type to tarray to see if the reserved word was causing a problem.
    variable v_refcursor refcursor;
    set autoprint on;
    begin
         crosstab.pivot (p_max_cols => 4,
                 p_query =>

                   'FROM   emp ' ||
                   'GROUP BY job, deptno',
                   p_anchor => crosstab.tarray ('JOB'),
                   p_pivot => crosstab.tarray ('DEPTNO', 'CNT'),
                   p_cursor => :v_refcursor);
    end;
    /Was going to use this package as a stored procedure in forms but I not sure it's going to work now.

  • Report using ref cursor or dynamic Sql

    Hi,
    I never create a report using a ref cursor or a dynamic sql. Could any one help me to solve the below issue.
    I have 2 tables.
    1. Student_Record
    2. Student_csv_help
    Student_Record the main table where the data is stored.
    Student_csv_help will contain the all the column names of the Student_record.
    CREATE TABLE Student_CSV_HELP
    ENTRY_ID NUMBER,
    RAW_NAME VARCHAR2(40 BYTE),
    DESC_NAME VARCHAR2(1000 BYTE),
    IN_OUTPUT_LIST VARCHAR2(1 BYTE)
    SET DEFINE OFF;
    Insert into TOA_CSV_HELP
    (ENTRY_ID, RAW_NAME, DESC_NAME, IN_OUTPUT_LIST)
    Values
    (1, 'S_ID', 'Student ID', 'Y');
    Insert into TOA_CSV_HELP
    (ENTRY_ID, RAW_NAME, DESC_NAME, IN_OUTPUT_LIST)
    Values
    (2, 'S_Name', 'Student Name', 'Y');
    Insert into TOA_CSV_HELP
    (ENTRY_ID, RAW_NAME, DESC_NAME, IN_OUTPUT_LIST)
    Values
    (3, 'S_Join_date', 'Joining Date', 'Y');
    Insert into TOA_CSV_HELP
    (ENTRY_ID, RAW_NAME, DESC_NAME, IN_OUTPUT_LIST)
    Values
    (4, 'S_Address', 'Address', 'Y');
    Insert into TOA_CSV_HELP
    (ENTRY_ID, RAW_NAME, DESC_NAME, IN_OUTPUT_LIST)
    Values
    (5, 'S_Fee', 'Tution Fee', 'N');
    commit;
    CREATE TABLE Student_record
    S_ID NUMBER,
    S_Name VARCHAR2(100 BYTE),
    S_Join_date date,
    S_Address VARCHAR2(360 BYTE),
    S_Fee Number
    Insert into Student_record
    (S_ID, S_Name, S_Join_date, S_Address,S_Fee)
    Values
    (101, 'john', TO_DATE('12/17/2009 08:00:00', 'MM/DD/YYYY HH24:MI:SS'), 'CA-94777', 2000);
    Insert into Student_record
    (S_ID, S_Name, S_Join_date, S_Address,S_Fee)
    Values
    (102, 'arif', TO_DATE('12/18/2009 08:00:00', 'MM/DD/YYYY HH24:MI:SS'), 'CA-94444', 3000);
    Insert into Student_record
    (S_ID, S_Name, S_Join_date, S_Address,S_Fee)
    Values
    (103, 'raj', TO_DATE('12/19/2009 08:00:00', 'MM/DD/YYYY HH24:MI:SS'), 'CA-94555', 2500);
    Insert into Student_record
    (S_ID, S_Name, S_Join_date, S_Address,S_Fee)
    Values
    (104, 'singh', TO_DATE('12/20/2009 08:00:00', 'MM/DD/YYYY HH24:MI:SS'), 'CA-94666', 2000);
    Commit;
    Now my requirement is:
    I have a form with Student_record data block. When i Click on print Button on this form. It will open another window which has Student_CSV_HELP.DESC_NAME and a check box before this.
    The window look like as below:
    check_box       DESC_NAME+
    X                   S_ID+
    --                   S_Name+
    X                   S_Join_date+
    X                   S_Address+
    --                  S_Fee+
    X  means check box checked.+
    --  means check box Unchecked.+
    After i selected these check boxes i will send 2 parameters to the report server
    1. a string parameter to the report server which has the value 'S_ID,S_Join_date,S_Address' (p_column_name := 'S_ID,S_Join_date,S_Address');
    2. the s_id value from the student_record block (p_S_id := '101');
    Now my requirement is when i click on run. I need a report like as below:
    Student ID : 101+
    Joining Date : 12/17/2009 08:00:00+
    Address : CA-94777+
    This is nothing but the ref cursor should run like as below:
    Select S_id from student_record block S_id = :p_S_id;
    Select S_Join_date from student_record block S_id = :p_S_id;
    Select S_Address from student_record block S_id = :p_S_id;
    So, according to my understanding i have to select the columns at the run time. I dont have much knowledge in creating reports using ref cursor or dynamic sql.
    So please help me to solve this issue.
    Thanks in advance.

    Plain sql should satisfy your need. Try ....
    Select S_id, S_Join_date, S_Address
    from student_record
    where S_id = :p_S_id

  • Populate a REF CURSOR from regular cursor...

    Hi all,
    I apologize if the answer to this is somewhere...I've been looking on the web for sometime and can't find an answer to the following problem. I have a Significant Events database that contains network based issues and problems. As problems are detected on the network an SE is issued and published. As the SE records are updated, NEW records are entered into the table and "linked" back to the original. Each update results in a new row. Thus, an SE with two updates would have a total of 3 lines. When the SE gets closed (set the column CLOSED to SYSDATE), only the "original" SE is closed, any updates are left open...aka, the CLOSED column is left null.
    That said, I need a way to get the original and/or latest updated SE rows from the table. Thus, I am trying to use a PL/SQL package. The PL/SQL "must" return a REF CURSOR as the results are being passed to a client process.
    My initial approach was within a PL/SQL procedure, I have an SQL statement that returns the SE originals. Once in that cursor I need to do the following:
    - Attempt to fetch any linked SE rows.
    - if no rows then
    - add the original to the REF CURSOR.
    - else
    - find latest SE update
    - add latest SE update to REF CURSOR.
    - end if
    My Question is : How do I manually "add" a row to a REF CURSOR?
    If this is not possible, is there a way to populate a REF CURSOR from maybe another construct like:
    TYPE ian_se_record is RECORD (
    se_id number
    ,linked_se_id number
    ,submitted date
    ,updated date
    ,closed date
    ,segroup varchar2(150)
    ,incident_start_time varchar2(150)
    ,business_units_affected varchar2(150)
    ,officenum varchar2(1500)
    ,sedetails varchar2(4000)
    TYPE ian_se_table is table of ian_se_record index by binary_integer;
    With the above construct I could:
    - Fill ian_se_table with the process described above.
    - And finally select off ian_se_table into the REF CURSOR?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated,
    adym

    Hi michaels,
    I've put your solution in place, but can't seem to get it to run. The two types were moved out of the package and into real types as you said. Here's the function, for brevity, I've remove some of the less important code:
    function ian_se_fetch return sys_refcursor
    is
        p_csr_events            sys_refcursor;
        cursor csr_items is
            select

        ian_se_row     ian_se_record;
        ian_se_tbl     ian_se_table;
        l_lng_index    number;
        l_lng_linked   number;
        l_lng_id       number;
    begin
         * OPEN : Open the main cursor of originals...
        for the_item in csr_items loop
             * CHECK : Check for any updates to the original...
            l_lng_linked := 0;
            select count(*)
            into l_lng_linked

            l_lng_id := 0;    /* reset the se-id    */

  • Ref cursor from anonymous block

    I have no problem to get a ref cursor from a Fill method call with an anonymous pl/sql block. But if my anonymous block contains a DECLARE section, the dataset is not populated.
    ex:
    BEGIN OPEN :cuInscription FOR SELECT column FROM table; END;
    is ok but with
    DECLARE A NUMBER; BEGIN OPEN :cuInscription FOR SELECT column FROM table; END;
    the dataset is not populated (even if the SQL CALL succeed).
    Do you know about that?

    This issue has been fixed in the ODP.NET 92040 release.

  • How to get an UPDATABLE REF CURSOR from the STORED PROCEDURE

    using C# with
    ORACLE OLE DB version: 9.0.0.1
    ADO version: 2.7
    I returns a REF CURSOR from a stored procedure seems like:
    type TCursor is ref cursor;
    procedure test_out_cursor(p_Dummy in varchar, p_Cur out TCursor) is
    begin
         open p_Cur for select * from DUAL;
    end;
    I create an ADO Command object and set
    cmd.Properties["IRowsetChange"].Value = true;
    cmd.Properties["Updatability"].Value = 7;
    cmd.Properties["PLSQLRSet"].Value = 1;
    cmd.CommandText = "{CALL OXSYS.TEST.TEST_OUT_CURSOR(?)}";
    and I use a Recordset object to open it:
    rs.Open(cmd, Missing.Value,
    ADODB.CursorTypeEnum.adOpenStatic,
    ADODB.LockTypeEnum.adLockBatchOptimistic,
    (int) ADODB.CommandTypeEnum.adCmdText +
    (int) ADODB.ExecuteOptionEnum.adOptionUnspecified);
    The rs can be opened but can NOT be updated!
    I saved the recordset into a XML file and there's no
    rs:baseschema/rs:basetable/rs:basecolumn
    attributes for "s:AttributeType" element.
    Any one have idea about this?
    thanks very much

    It is not possible through ADO/OLEDB.
    Try ODP.NET currently in Beta, it is possible to update DataSet created with refcursors. You need to specify your custom SQL or SP to send update/insert/delete.
    As I remember there is a sample with ODP.NET Beta 1 just doing this.

  • REF CURSOR in PL/SQL BLOCK

    I am trying to return a ref cursor from a function in a package. I am trying to execute this through SQL Plus and cannot seem to get the code correct this is what I have. Please help. How do I display the output? I tried a CURSOR FOR loop, but got syntactical error saying it was being used inproperly.
    DECLARE
         v_rec      adp_vsp.grc_vsp;
         v_fname ps_personal_data.first_name%TYPE;
         v_lname ps_personal_data.last_name%TYPE;

         v_fname := 'John';
         v_lname := 'Barr';
         v_rec := adp_vsp.f_get_vsp(v_fname,v_lname);
    END;

    If you want to do it manually, you need to loop through the cursor and fetch the results:
    sql>create or replace procedure p_show_emps(p_rc out sys_refcursor)

      3  begin
      4    open p_rc for select empno, ename from emp where rownum <= 5;

  • How to return a ref cursor from this dbms_sql?

    Hi,
    Can anyone show me how to return a ref cursor from this dbms_sql based procedure? I see 11g has a dbms_sql.to_refcursor(cursor_handle). How can this be done is 10g?
    Thx.
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE Sample_Get_t
    p_sample_id sample.sample_id%TYPE,
    p_contract_id sample.contr_id%TYPE
    IS
    cursor_handle INT;
    sql_stmnt varchar2(500);
    rows_processed NUMBER;
    BEGIN
    sql_stmnt :=
    'SELECT
    sample_id,
    contr_id,
    rcpt_id
    FROM
    sample s
    WHERE
    s.contr_id = :1
    and s.sample_id = :2
    ORDER BY
    sample_id';
    cursor_handle := dbms_sql.open_cursor;
    dbms_sql.parse(cursor_handle, sql_stmnt, dbms_sql.native);
    dbms_sql.bind_variable(cursor_handle, ':1', p_contract_id);
    dbms_sql.bind_variable(cursor_handle, ':2', p_sample_id);
    rows_processed := dbms_sql.execute(cursor_handle);
    dbms_sql.close_cursor(cursor_handle);
    END Sample_Get_t;

    In 10 this cannot be done with dbms_sql (to my knowledge). There are a couple of other options.
    1) open the ref cursor for the dynamic statement using bind variables (or SYS_CONTEXT variables, which i prefer since they are much easier to deal with when you are dynamically adding predicates).
    declare
       wRefCursor  SYS_REFCURSOR;
    begin
       open wRefCursor for 'select * from all_objects where owner = :Logged_in_user' using user;
    end;
    /or using the context (the context will bind for you)
    declare
       wRefCursor  SYS_REFCURSOR;
    begin
       open wRefCursor for 'select * from all_objects where owner = SYS_CONTEXT(''CONTEXT_NAME'', ''VARIABLE_NAME'') ';
    end;
    /Be aware that contexts ALWAYS return varchar values, so if you are comparing to a number you should wrap it in TO_NUMBER, a date, TO_DATE and so on....
    2) change the DBMS_SQL to do an insert into a global temporary table and return the ref cursor which select's * from GTT;
    3) upgrade to Oracle 11 :)

  • How to retrieve the values from PL/SQL table types.

    Hi Every one,
    I have the following procedure:
    DECLARE
    TYPE t1 IS TABLE OF emp%ROWTYPE
    INDEX BY BINARY_INTEGER;
    t t1;
    BEGIN
    SELECT *
    BULK COLLECT INTO t
    FROM emp;
    END;
    This procedure works perfectly fine to store the rows of employee in a table type. I am not able to retrieve the values from Pl/SQL table and display it using dbms_output.put_line command.
    Can anybody help me please!!!!!
    Thanks
    Ahmed.

    You mean, you can't add this
    for i in t.first..t.last loop
    dbms_output.put_line(t(i).empno||' '||t(i).ename||' '||t(i).job);
    end loop;or you can't add this
    set serveroutput onor maybe, you are working in third party application where dbms_output is not applicable at all?
    You see, not able like very similar it is not working - both are too vague...
    Best regards
    Maxim

  • Report from PL/SQL Table

    Thanks for answer to my first question. Now I have another problem.
    Is there any way to print a report based on virtual table, which is created during some Pl/SQL procedure and can't be easily decribed by Select statement

    SELECT FROM PL/SQL TABLE IN ORACLE REPORTS 6I
    The requirement is to populate a table and then select from that table in a report. The typical solution is to
    populate a database table, but for situations where that is undesirable there is a way to select from a PL/SQL
    table.
    For example - for each employee we want to populate a PL/SQL table and then select from that table.
    I used the following records in the emp table:
    INSERT INTO Emp VALUES(123,'Bob','Sales',555,'28-JAN-79',35000,12,30);
    INSERT INTO Emp VALUES(321,'Sue','Finance',555,'12-MAY-83',42000,12,10);
    INSERT INTO Emp VALUES(234,'Mary','Account',555,'14-AUG-82',33000,12,20);
    INSERT INTO Emp VALUES(623,'Joe','Sales',555,'28-JAN-79',35000,12,30);
    INSERT INTO Emp VALUES(621,'Jim','Finance',555,'12-MAY-83',42000,12,10);
    INSERT INTO Emp VALUES(634,'Jane','Account',555,'14-AUG-82',33000,12,20);
    INSERT INTO Emp VALUES(723,'Fred','Sales',555,'28-JAN-79',35000,12,30);
    INSERT INTO Emp VALUES(721,'Meg','Finance',555,'12-MAY-83',42000,12,10);
    INSERT INTO Emp VALUES(734,'Jill','Account',555,'14-AUG-82',33000,12,20);
    =============================================================================================
    Step 1: Create a package spec in the report:
    PACKAGE pkg_table IS
    TYPE t_rec IS RECORD (
    field1 NUMBER(6),
    field2 VARCHAR2(30));
    TYPE t_tab IS TABLE OF t_rec INDEX BY BINARY_INTEGER;
    gv_tab t_tab;
    FUNCTION populate (
    p_empno NUMBER) RETURN NUMBER;
    END;
    Step 2: Create the package body:
    PACKAGE BODY pkg_table IS
    FUNCTION populate (
    p_empno NUMBER) RETURN NUMBER IS
    BEGIN
         gv_tab.DELETE;
         -- populate table as required - for demo purposes put in anything
         FOR lv_ind IN 1..MOD(p_empno,20) LOOP
              gv_tab(lv_ind).field1 := lv_ind;
              gv_tab(lv_ind).field2 := 'row '||TO_CHAR(lv_ind)||' for emp '||TO_CHAR(p_empno);
         END LOOP;
         RETURN gv_tab.COUNT;
    END populate;
    END;
    Step 3: Create the master query:
    SELECT empno,
    ename
    FROM emp
    Step 4: Add a formula column CF_populate to the master query that does:
    function CF_populateFormula return Number is
    -- for each emp fetched this formula will repopulate the PL/SQL table
    -- and return the number of records in the table
    begin
    return pkg_table.populate(:empno);
    end;
    Step 5: Create the detail query:
    -- we need to join this to the master and then ensure that for each
    -- empno there are as many records fetched as there will be
    -- records in the PL/SQL table
    SELECT e1.empno,rownum
    FROM emp e1, emp e2, emp e3
    WHERE rownum <= :CF_populate
    Step 6: Add formula columns to the detail query for each of the fields in the
    PL/SQL table we want to display:
    CF_Field1:
    function CF_field1Formula return Number is
    begin
    return pkg_table.gv_tab(:rownum).field1;
    end;
    CF_Field2:
    function CF_field2Formula return Varchar2 is
    begin
    return pkg_table.gv_tab(:rownum).field2;
    end;
    Step 7: Create the repeating frame and layout items to display the formula columns.
    =============================================================================================
    The same technique can be used to populate a master query. In a report level formula column
    CF_Populate populate the PL/SQL table as required. In the master query we just need the rownum:
    SELECT rownum
    FROM emp, emp, emp
    WHERE rownum <= :CF_Populate
    Add the formula columns to display Field1 and Field2.

  • Error while retrieving data from PL/SQL Table using SELECT st. (Urgent!!!)

    Hi Friends,
    I am using Oracle 8.1.6 Server, & facing problems while retrieving data from a PL/SQL Table:
    CREATE or REPLACE PROCEDURE test_proc IS
    TYPE tP2 is TABLE of varchar2(10); --declared a collection
    dt2 tP2 := tP2('a','b','c');
    i NUMBER(8);
    begin
    SELECT COUNT(*) INTO i FROM TABLE(CAST(dt2 as tP2));
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('**'||i);
    end;
    While executing the above procedure, I encountered foll. error:
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-00600: internal error code, arguments: [15419], [severe error during PL/SQL execution], [], [],
    ORA-06544: PL/SQL: internal error, arguments: [pfrrun.c:pfrbnd1()], [], [], [], [], [], [], []
    ORA-06553: PLS-801: internal error [0]
    Can anyone please help me, where the problem is??
    Is it Possible to retrieve data from PL/SQL TABLE using SELECT statement? & How ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Best Regards,
    Jay Raval.

    Thanks Roger for the Update.
    It means that have to first CREATE TYPE .. TABLE in database then only I can fire a Select statement on that TYPE.
    Actually I wanted to fire a Select statement on the TABLE TYPE, defined & declared in PLSQL stored procedure using DECLARE TYPE .. TABLE & not using CREATE TYPE .. TABLE.
    I was eager to know this, because my organization is reluctant in using CREATE TYPE .. TABLE defined in the database, so I was looking out for another alternative to access PL/SQL TABLE using Select statement without defining it database. It would have been good if I could access a PLSQL TABLE using Select statement Declared locally in the stored procedure.
    Can I summarize that to access a PL/SQL TABLE using SELECT statement, I have to first CREATE TYPE .. TABLE?
    If someone have any other idea on this, please do let me know.
    Thanks a lot for all help.
    Best Regards,
    Jay Raval.
    You have to define a database type...
    create type tP2 is table of varchar2(10)
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE TEST_PROC
    IS
    dt2 tP2 := tP2('a','b','c');
    i NUMBER(8);
    begin
    SELECT COUNT(*) INTO i FROM TABLE(CAST (dt2 AS tP2));
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('**'||i);
    end;
    This will work.
