Refresh underlying image of smart object

Hello,
I made some basic adjustments in Lightroom and then opened the image as a smart object in Photoshop.
If I decide to make more changes in Lightroom how do I tell Photoshop to 'refresh' the underlying image?
Thanks,
Will

Since the underlying file is a dng, when I 'replace contents' in photoshop, ACR pops up.
I never used ACR to adjust the file, I used Lightroom.
Do I just assume that the ACR settings are what I applied to the file in Lightroom?
LR and ACR store settings for the Adobe Conversion Engine in vasious places File MetaData, Sidecar files and ACR database to name some. If an embedded smart object is a RAW file the smart object has it set of Raw conversion setting.  You can in Photoshop use menu Layers>Smart Objects>New Smart Object via Copy to create a independent new smart object layer. Once this is done in Photoshop if you double click on the copied layer leyer's smart object icon in the layers palette ACR will open on the new copy with its copied RAW Conversion settings. You can  change the setting an have ACR update the copy's RAW settings.  You will not have two different RAW conversions in Photoshop on layers you can blend together to bring out more detail. With Smart Objects you dealing with copies...

  • How to place raster images as smart objects?

I'm trying to duplicate Photoshop's File:Place menu functionality and I'm experiencing something that I can't figure out. (I've added my code to the end of this message.)
I have a variety of test EPS images that I can run through the File:Place menu. They all appear on the document as "Smart Objects". That is I can then do a bunch of transforms to the image (like rotate, move, deform) before committing to the image to the document.
The important point here is that some images, when opened by Photoshop, first ask that I "Rasterize EPS Format" while others just open up without comment.
While doing these File:Place actions, I've been using the Listener plugin that comes with the SDK to generate code dumps of my actions. From these I've then generated my own code for placing images onto a document. I've had to re-arrange the code a bit to work in Objective-C so there's a good chance that I've done something wrong while translating.
Now if you look at my code you notice a commented out section. If you uncomment those lines then you basically have what I got from the Listener plugin log. But the problem is that this code then doesn't act like the File:Place menu action. It creates a new layer, places the image on the page - but its gone one step too far and the image is no longer a "Smart Object". The image is committed to the layer.
With a bit of experimenting I commented out the line that you can see commented out in my code. However, this does something odd. For all images you can see Photoshop put up a busy icon for a few seconds showing that it is process, but only images that Photoshop wants to "Rasterize EPS Format" actually appear on the page as Smart Objects. Trying to place the images that Photoshop doesn't rasterize results in nothing appearing.
That's my problem. If I uncomment that line in my code then all images that I test with appear on the page - but not as Smart Objects. If I comment out the code then only images that Photoshop wants to rasterize appear - but those that do appear then appear as Smart Objects.
So that's my goal: to place any image onto a document as a Smart Object just like Photoshop's File:Place menu command does. Any ideas where I'm going wrong?

If you want to go with Batch I would recommend creating an Action of more or less these steps:
    • set the resolution to the same as the background image’s
    • change the image from Background Layer to regular Layer if necessary
    • convert it to a Smart Object
    • add a Drop Shadow Layer Style to the image (do not use Global Angle)
    • place the background image (File > Place …)
    • move it behind the image layer
    • Image > Reveal All
    • make Selection from that layer’s transparency (cmd-click its icon in the Layers Panel) and use Image > Crop
    • select and transform the image layer to fit the intended position
This would naturally work out best if the images had the same size and proportions.
For the reflection on the floor duplicate the image, flip it vertically, move it in position and reduce its opacity to maybe 10%.
Realistically you may have to hide it partially behind the pillows, a Vector Mask would be an option.

  • Possible bug when opening NEF-images as Smart Objects in PS CS3?

In architectural images I often apply lens corrections (Rotation, Distortion, vertical Transformation) to my RAW (NEF) images.
When I open such an image in PS CS3 as a PSD all is fine, that means all the lens correction is applied.
But when I open the same image in PS as a Smart Object the lens correction is not applied, i.e. PS shows the image with all LR-editing (such as color temperature, exposure, contrast, etc) except for the lens correction data.
    What is wrong here?
    I'm running LR 3.2 and PS CS3.
    Thank you for your input.
    ErnstK

    Thank you for your answers.
It occurred to me - and Ian's post seems to confirm this - that PS CS3 is not fully compatible with LR3.2.
When I chose <Edit in CS3> (to open the image as PSD) I get the message that my Camera Raw plug-in is 4.6 and it gives me the choice to <Open Anyway> or to <Render by LR>. I usually chose the latter and I assume that this is technically an Export.
When I chose <Open as Smart Object> it just opens the image in CS3 without any dialog in between.
I guess it's time to upgrade to CS5.
    Thank you all.

  • Cannot open raw image as smart object from ACR 8.4

       Hi
I just noticed that I am not able to open an image as a smart object from ACR 8.4. The tooltip says I can by holding down the shift key but doing so has no effect. I reset all my preferences to make sure but that hasn't fixed the problem.
      Thanks

I thought it was the Alt (Opt) key that did that.  I'll go check
No, you are right.  It is Shift, and it is working OK for me with 8.4 Windows 7

  • Unable to Save my Smart Object without "Flattening the Image"

    Hey there, I am helpless.
I am Using Photoshop CC 2014, always the newest version, on a mac.
Here's the problem: I am usually working in PSDs with many layers, and some smart objects. Inside of the smart objects, I have content that I can change.
So when I save the contents inside of a Smart Object, it also changes them inside of the main PSD.
BUT - since months, I can't save the changes inside of a Smart Object. Photoshop is telling me:
Can't save this document back to its original file format. Flatten layers and discard extra data as necessary and choose File > Save again.
When I flatten the image, the Smart Object has no usage for me, because it's like a rasterized layer.
Someone help me?  I didn't find a solution in the internet!
Btw: I already tried reinstalling Photoshop. The issue is still there.
    Thank you.

If that is not the case please read this with regard to general trouble-shooting, restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved might be of special interest:

  • File Size for Rasterized vs. Smart Object Images

    Hello,
I am scaling smaller images up to the full canvas size for a project (around 200% of original size). I have tried scaling images up as both a smart object, and also converting it to a rasterized layer, then scaling it up. I noticed that almost every time I leave the image a smart object and then scale the image up and save it for web, it is a smaller filesize than if I would convert it to a rasterized layer and then save it for web (sometimes up to 5% smaller). Does anyone know why this happens, or if it is changing the quality of the image by leaving it as a smart object?
Note: I am using very large images, with an original filesize of 1-3 MB.
    Thanks for the help!

EDIT: Just to clarify, I am talking about the JPEG image file size being smaller, not the PSD file size
I do have maximum compatibiliy set for my PSD.
I am saving out all my images for this experiment out as a JPEG at 50% quality. I attached a screenshot of my save for web settings.
I also attached the rasterized image and the smart object image. I also attached the scaled down version of the image, which is what I am scaling up to create the rasterized and smart object images. Let me know if this is what you need to fully examine, and thank you for the help!
    Here is the rasterized image:
Here is the smart object image:
Here is the scaled down verison of the image:

  • Convert multiple layers into separate smart objects

I have multiple layers in a document that I want to make into separate smart objects.
If I select them and choose "convert to smart object" in the Layers Panel fly out, it flattens the layers into 1 smart object.
Can it be done, or do I need to make each layer a smart object one at a time.
    OR... let me back up
I have several files in Bridge, I want to "load into Photoshop layers" using the TOOLS > Batch Command BUT have each file load as a smart object.
    Either way would be great!

While these don't use the batch command, take a look at
from within photoshop, File>Scripts>Load Files into Stack.
For bridge try Dr. Browns Services:
    http://www.russellbrown.com/scripts.html
If you have cs5, you can drag files from mini bridge into an existing
photoshop document, for smart object layers, provided you have
your preferences under general to place or drag raster images as smart objects.

  • Photoshop CS5 Smart objects, Pen tool, Layers.

Hi Ive got few questions about Photoshop CS5.
Every time I open new image in my project photoshop opens as Smart Object and I always have to Rasterize its really annoying. How to change it?
When im using Pen tool and making selection its selects now the part which I selecte but background so I always have to inverse selection to select the part I want to its never happens in Photoshop CS3
When im working on two different projects and I want to copy layer from one project to another how you do it?
    Thanks for your help.

    1. If your dragging or placing into the image, you can go to Edit>Preferences>General and uncheck Place or Drag Raster Images as Smart Objects.
    2. When using the Pen Tool enable Add to Path Area before drawing the path. You can change it after drawing the path by using the Path selection Tool.
    3. If your using tabs you can select the Move Tool and drag from the document area on the screen to the other tab and the other document should reveal itself.
Another way is to right click on the layer in the layers panel, choose Duplicate Layer and then in the dialog that follows choose the document under destination.

  • Photoshop CS6 - Pasting Smart Objects from InDesign CS6 look awful

Since upgrading from CS5 I'm having a huge problem using Smart Objects.
    What:
Smart Objects pasted from InDesign into Photoshop are pixelated and corny beyond belief. Originating material placed in InDesign is hi-res (e.g. 600ppi) but when pasted in PS it looks crappy.
    How:
Selecting an image in InDesign and pasting it in PS in a 72ppi file.
Typically I need to copy elements from previous art in ID and re-compose and use for web.
    Why:
Can't seem to fix it. Have tried with Anti-Aliasing both on and off to no avail. None of the Image Interpolation settings affect this either.
Only solution is to scale the placed Smart Object to something like 400% where it suddenly looks nice again, rasterize and then scale it back down.
    Theory:
Smart Object scaling is flawed in PS CS6.
Note: All scaled images in InDesign already look gritty and awful. Even with Display Performance: High Quality set (using default settings). Seems to me like CS6 scaling is b a d.
    Anyone else seeing this?
    Thanks
Image 1: Smart Object rasterized at same size as placed. (ouch. awful.)
Image 2: Smart Object Scaled to 400%, rasterized and then scaled back to original size (yum yum, like it used to be without up-rasterize-down-scaling)

That does not resolve the anti-aliasing issue in CS6 - it still looks rather bad.
The anti-aliasing sampling method applied to smart vector objects is just extremely bad looking. And it is not merely an issue in Photoshop: exporting artwork from Illustrator at web/screen resolution using the web export is absolutely abysmal looking (not other word applies here, unfortunately).
I explain more about this issue here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/6002543#6002543
The best option is to blow up the artwork, rasterize, and then scale down with bicubic or bicubic automatic, depending. But even then you will not achieve the same quality that can be attained with other tools that, for example, support catmul rom and mitchellnetravali for downsampling.
Anyway, Adobe applications are very weak when it comes to proper downsampling and file size optimization for web and screen graphics. You're better off looking someplace else.

  • ACR and Smart Objects

    ACR and Smart Objects...
Ok, I'm trying to take the plunge into Smart Objects. I want to control localized luminance as well as localized contrast adjustments (using masks in PS CS3) in a non destructive and flexible way. Instead of the usual: bringing into PS multiple exposures of a single Raw image, or bringing into PS multiple bracketed images (landscape) I am exploring the idea of bringing these images into PS as Smart Objects.
I have figured out how to work with multiple copies of a single Raw image as Smart Objects, but can not figure out how to get different bracketed Raw files layered into PS as Smart Objects...
Would someone offer some assistance, if it is possible?
    Thank you!

    >Would someone offer some assistance, if it is possible?
If you have multiple images (as opposed to multi versions of the same image) you'll need to open each of the images as separate SO's and separate documents, then drag them into one document.

  • Use Smart Objects to rotate single TIFF to avoid quality loss?

I am archiving numerous historic photographs by scanning the originals as high-resolution TIFF files. I need to rotate the scanned images slightly in Photoshop for presentation/archiving purposes but I am worried about losing some image quality.
To maintain lossless images, is it necessary to open my TIFF images as "Smart Objects" before rotating them? If so, this increases my file size many-fold on saving. Is there a way to maintain the approximate size of my original TIFF file?
I am working in Photoshop CS4, Windows 7 64-bit. Thanks for your time,
    Ilford3200

Any angular transform that isn't in 90 degree steps will cause resampling no matter what method you use. You are looking for something that doesn't exist. A pixel-based SO will resample the same as a native transform. there would only be a difference with vector data due to how vector rasterization works, but that's irrelevant for what you describe.

  • SMART OBJECTS TEMP FOLDER

I use smartobjects a lot when I am creating collages or my graphics in photoshop. What is surprising me these days is that when I import a photo as a smart object, if I click it in the layers panel it opens in a separate window, so I can edit just that particular photo, by adding adjustment layers, duplicating etc. My surprise is that when I try to save it it opens the temp folder.
Now I can't save my new edits, because this was very useful in case I want to change or edit the adjustment layer. If I still got the background, I can merge all layers and save it and all changes will be updated in the main document, but if I don't like the changes, that means I will have to start all over again.
Anyone knows why this is happenning to me. I have the current CS5 12.0.4.
    Thank you,
    Shadreck

Please clearify two things for me.  How do you import a photo as a smart object? and when you wrote duplicating what did you dupe.
When I do collages I populate my Collage templates with image files using Photoshop's menu File>Place.  The image layers are smart object and embedded it the layer is a copy of the original image file. It can be any image file type RAW, PSD, Jpeg, PNG etc.  When I double click on an image layer smart object icon in the layers palette Photoshop Opens the embedded file in the smart object layer. If the embedded file is a RAW file ACR open first I can re-adjust the current smart objects  raw setting an then open the image in Photoshop.  Then I have a choice of closing the image without saving in which case no update is made to the smart object layer. Or I can use menu File>Save... . When I do a save I see a message that has a progress bar that states the Smart Object is being updated .  What happens is the embedded file in the  smart object is updated with the changes I made to it. Once it is updated the changes are also reflected into the document containg the smart opject layer. The smar object is also still open in Photoshop which I x out of it in Photoshop.   You may have to reduce the smart object Image view zoom out to be able to see the updating smart object message when you do do the save to commit the changes into the smart object.   Once you update the smart object layer the embedded image file is not the original image for it now contains you new update.    On my CS2, CS3 and CS5 systems I never see save opening a temp folder.  I see the smart object layer being updated when I use menu File>Save...

  • Lightroom - Photoshop and Smart Objects

    Hi there,
I've got a very general, work flow related question.
I want to open some of my Lightroom images as smart objects in photoshop to do certain changes.
The files are opened in PS as .tif and I add some layers etc.
If I now save the image, it gets re-imported in LR.
However, I seem to lose all the data like layers etc of photoshop, and I'm not sure how to prevent this.
If I close the image in photoshop, re-open the new LR image again in PS, the layers etc are gone.
What's the correct workflow to do this? (Open images from LR in PS to do adjustments, and save them back to LR)
    Thanks a lot,
    Christoph

When you re-open the tif file in Photoshop, choose Edit Original. What you're doing is opening with LR adjustments, causing it to create a new flattened tif.
