Refurbished 3G S Unlocked in Canada?

I bought my friends iPhone 3G S off him. He said he'd been using it with Bell (whom he's with). When I got it, it wasn't jailbroken. I put my SIM in and it didnt work. Apparently it's locked to Telus.
Now on HowardForums, there's the claim that refurbished units from the Apple Store aren't carrier locked. When you put the SIM card in for the first time in the store, THEN it becomes locked to that carrier. Is that the case? (like does anyone have any firsthand knowledge of this?)
If so please let me know, my headphone jack goes in and out and I can warranty it under that. Thanks!

ALL iphones sold in Canada are carrier locked & NONE of the Canadian carriers offer unlocking.

So I just took the SIM card from that phone and put it in this phone. It says " no service " after it did the search. I went to verizon store and was told that verizon system won 't take any phone unless it's specifically designed for verizon.
The SIM you took out of your Verizon 4S is actually a Vodafone SIM for international roaming. It will not enable to use Verizon's network. Verizon gave you the correct information. Only phones sold for use on Verizon's network can be used on Verizon's network. Sorry.

Why is iPhone 5 locked in USA but unlocked in Canada?

i searched for unlocked iphone 5 at web and the results showed me apple page....
it was for canada. Unlocked (GSM) 699$ 16GB!!
But it was not on USA page

i believe the reason unlocked iphones were for sale on launch day in Canada is because Canadian law requires that phones be sold unlocked - this is true in other countries like France (but unfortunaely not in the US)

If I were you I would just wait for the Iphone 4 to be launched in India which should happen by Sept 2010 when the launch in 88 countries
I have read reports that phones purchased "unlocked" in the UK are not working in India with the Indian SIM card.
When the person read the fine print it mentions that it will work with any prepaid or post paid carrier in the UK and does not promise it will work elsewhere.
It could be that apple is restricting it to the country in which it has sold to fall in line with the terms of warranty coverage
If you are so desperate for the phone and want to receive it from Canada I would atleast ask your friend to talk to apple in canada to understand the exact meaning of being unlocked.
I am not trying to discourage you from buying an iphone 4 but you dont want to end up getting an expensive brick after paying so much money that you cannot use as phone.
By the way I am also from India but I will be selling myiphone 4 to a friend when I return to India next month and will buy a new one in India with Apple India warrantly when it is available.

This might be the wrong section, but it seems to be the closest fit for my question?
Anyways, I am planning on buying the iPhone 5 on the 21st in Canada. My plan is to go around 3:30 in the morning(last year I went at 5:30 and was something like 200th in line! and then buy two unlocked iPhones, one for me and one for a friend. I went to the Yorkdale Apple Store in Toronto, Ontario today and they said that they are not really sure, but are probably only selling on-contract phones in store on the launch day. I then however called the Eaton Center Apple Store also in Toronto and was told that they are 100% selling unlocked iPhone 5s from the begining in Canada. I then did the online chat and was told the same thing. So I called Yorkdale back and they still say that they aren't sure but from what they have been told so far it looks like they will only be selling locked phones, and that they will not fully know until the day of, which really is a bit rediculous.
I was hoping that someone knew whether iPhone 5s would be sold unlocked in Canada at Apple Retail Stores.

Apple has not yet made clear the status of the iPhone 6 models they will be selling enough to risk buying and in any case the warranty is NOT nternational
you will have no warranty on a US purchased iPhone
Contract free and unlocked are not the same in US
depends on how much you want to risk your money
You would need the A1586 very unlikely to be available in US in an unlocked status

No you can't because none of the Apple stores provide international shipping, which is why they are all country specific and you need to order from your home store. You also need a Canadian shipping address and a Canadian credit card.

ONLY the carrier to which it is locked can legitimately unlock it. If it is locked to Rogers, then they would have to unlock it. You would have to ask them if they offer this.

Apple Canada sells a bunch of late 2011 Macbook Pros if you're interested in those.
You won't find any refurbished 2012's if that's what you're looking for.

You can't get the unlock code.
As already provided, the iPhone is sold as officially unlocked in Canada when purchased from Apple's online store only, which requires having an address in Canada along with the credit card used to purchase the iPhone online having the same billing address as the ship to address for the iPhone, or having a billing address in Canada.
Paying the full retail sales price doesn't automatically equate to the iPhone being sold as officially unlocked. Whoever the carrier for the iPhone is can request an unlock for the iPhone that is sent to Apple by the carrier with the unlocking done with iTunes - that is if the carrier the iPhone was sold as carrier locked with will do so.

It was bought from apple unlocked. No carrier's logo or name at all on the box... It turns on, I connect it to iTunes. It even asks me if I want to update for ions 5.0.1 something like this, but still in the main screen for iTunes it says:
the sim card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported. Only compatible sim cards from a supported carrier mayb be used to activate iPhone.

This is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. Canada still can't get it? Why does the US have access but not Canada. Can we expect it or is there another 3 month delay? Unbelievable that on day one I paid over $500 to buy this phone unlocked in Canada and still cannot use the most basic features like MMS. This is pathetic. Blackberry is better than this and they're barely alive

Lumia 920 locks up with Black Update

I'm using an unlocked Rogers (Canada) phone on T-Mobile (USA). My phone had been working fine with the Amber update but as soon as I updated to Black it started hanging and acting weird. These are the symptoms:
1. If I have a device pin setup it hangs as soon as I type in the pin or if I hit the emergency call button.
2. If I don't have a pin, most apps don't start. They say they are loading but after 30 seconds or so they drop back to the start menu.
3. It never successfully reboots, I have to use the soft reset key sequence (power + volume down) to get it to restart.
4. I see missed incoming calls but the phone gives no indication when you're actually calling it.
Things I've tried:
1. Soft reset.
2. Hard reset.
3. Flash to pre Black using Nokia Software Recovery Tool. (no longer possible since it downloaded the black update this morning)
4. Restoring backup after hard reset.
5. Picking all the defaults after a hard reset.
6. Changing the region on startup after a hard reset.
7. Changing the keyboard layouts (remove some, add a bunch). This the one setting I seem to be able to get to.
8. Uninstalled all apps I could (I can't see what games are installed).
Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this problem? I'm in the US and the phone is Canadian so it's going to be a pain to send it in anywhere.

that's really a bummer.
I went through the same thing/similar when I updated my 920 to black.
I had to hard format and use the NSRT to reinstall the firmware completely 10-12 times until it finaly took the firmware correctly.
other than that, seems you have done everything you could to troubleshoot it.

Safari 6.1 Suddenly Slowing MacBook Pro to a Crawl

I know that it's risky to blame system problems on particular programs, but here I really fee like it's Safari.
In the past month or so I've been getting the spinning beach ball more and more often, and I can't tell you how many times I've had to Force Quit Safari.
Very rarely, it hangs the computer completely and won't even let me Force Quit anything.
I've repaired Permissions several time and verified my HD -- no problems.
Is there some particularly evil combination of some program interacting with Safari that's causing this? I really have not installed anything weird in the past few months but that spinning ball has become my nemesis!
Oh for the days of DiskWarrior or even good old Norton Utilities . . . I used to be able to defragment my drive with Classic but now it seems that you can't defragment your drive.

Whatever you do, don't waste money on "Disk Warrior." It's completely useless if you have adequate backups, which you must have. If you don't have a current backup, back up immediately, before you do anything else. Ask if you need guidance.
When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
          SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
