Registering a Japanese iPhone as an American

I'm an American military spouse currently stationed in Japan. I purchased an iPhone a little over a month ago, with a Japanese carrier, and obviously have a Japanese (11 digit) phone number. I already have an Apple ID, which is associated with my (pre-existing) Mobile Me account. When I try to go through the "register my iPhone" process in iTunes, I hit a roadblock when I have to enter my iPhone's phone number, because it is expecting an American 10-digit number. I'm guessing that if I registered it under a different (new) Apple ID I'd be able to indicate that I live in Japan and enter my Japanese number with no problem; however, I'm worried that this would cause problems for me - namely, not being able to buy American content from the iTunes store, and not being able to sync my iPhone with my Mobile Me account (since my phone would be registered under a different Apple ID).
Any ideas? Advice? I don't like the idea of going 3 years with an unregistered phone, but I also don't want to be unable to download American TV shows because honestly, iTunes is a pretty important lifeline to American culture for us.
TIA!
Kerry
