Registering Local Macs Dynamically in DNS

I would like my Mac clients to register their hostnames dynamically into DNS.  Our Mac server provides DHCP currently and will provide DNS once I get DDNS working.  Apple's manuals all deal with making static entries into DNS so they are of no help.
I have found only one article so far that explained how to enable DDNS: http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1745.  Here's a portion of the instructions:
Shut down DNS, launch Terminal.app, issue a command to create a backup copy of the file and then an ASCII text editor (with the editor commands visible on the bottom of the nano display):
sudo cp /etc/dns/publicView.conf.apple /etc/dns/publicView.conf.apple-savesudo nano /etc/dns/publicView.conf.apple
and navigate to the entries for both the forward zone and for the reverse zone
     zone "example.net." {          type master;          file "db.example.net.";          allow-transfer {any;};          allow-update {none;};     };
and add/change the allow-update allow-update line found within the zone from none to localnets:
allow-update { localnets; };
I made the change above successfully.  However, I opened Server Admin afterwards and used it to modify a different DNS option.  Doing this caused Server Admin to overwrite the publicView.conf.apple file, undoing my modifications to "allow-update".
Am I going to be forced to make the change through CLI and not use Server Admin at all for DNS configuration if I don't want my changes being overwritten?
Also, will I need to configure the Mac clients to register their hostname or will I need to configure the DHCP service to do this?

Yes. Unfortunately, with DNS, it's either manage through the GUI or the CLI. You have to pick one and stick with it.

  • About max local MAC filtering can be register in WLC 2504 and 5508

    Hi all
My customer is considering to use WLC with MAC filtering feature (use local database not external Radius). So they are concerning about maximum local MAC filtering entries that can be register on WLC2504 and WLC5508 to buy (the number of APs is about 20, but the MAC is more than 200)
I tried to search, but I could not find any specs mention it. If anyone knows, please help to answer

I looked at this before. I want to say its maxed at 2048 regardless of the model ..

  • How do i move my photos from external hard drive to my local mac book pro hard drive?

I have my iphoto files on an external hard drive.  I need to move them to my local Mac Book Pro Hard drive and I want to do it accurately.  Anyone have any advice?

    THanks Niel.
In typical "me" fashion I asked the question and then did the leg work and researched the answer (instead of doing the research first!).  I learned exactly what you have posted here.  It sounds REALLY simple.  Thanks!

  • I'm unable to register my Mac Mini (Late 2012).  Says serial is invalid.

I'm trying to register my Mac Mini (late 2012) so I can get support for another issue with it.  I grabbed my serial from the "About This Mac" window, and attempt to register using that.  However, I get an error saying "We're sorry, but this serial number is either invalid or it is for Apple software or accessories. If you are trying to register Apple hardware other than an accessory, please check your information and try again."
I'm also unable to update Mountain Lion from 10.8.1 to 10.8.2.  It just takes me to the App Store update screen, but not OS update appears.

Call AppleCare and let them register it. Some late 2012 machines are unable to update to 10.8.2.

  • Cisco Aironet Remove Local MAC Address List (all)

    Hi All,
I need to remove all MAC addresses in the LOCAL MAC Address List on a Cisco Aironet. I do not want to remove running config on the device as we have changed over to a RADIUS Server.

  • WPA with local MAC address authentication

Can Cisco Aironet AP support WPA encryptions with local MAC address authentications as the current setup i have do not have a radius server to authenticate my users.
i tried configuring with local MAC address but no success.

    Try this:
    conf t
    access-list 700 deny xxxx.xxxx.xxxx 0000.0000.0000
    access-list 700 deny xxxx.xxxx.xxxx 0000.0000.0000
    access-list 700 permit 0000.0000.0000 ffff.ffff.ffff
    dot11 association mac-list 700
Replace the xxxx.xxxx.xxxx with each host you want to allow on the AP. This will block any other MACs from accessing the AP. This is not by SSID, this is by AP, so let me know if this will work for you.

  • Access the local Mac's Time Machine without its external USB HDD?

    Hello.
Is it possible to access the local Mac's Time Machine without its external USB HDD? Or is the external backup HDD required? This is assuming Mac OS X 10.8.5. I am not sure if the newer versions can do it.
    Thank you in advance.

  • Solaris local-mac-address setting

    Hi all,
Having 10gR2 Clusterware and RAC on two Solaris 10 sparc, is it required to set the EEPROM settng local=mac-address? to true so that each network card will use its own MAC address instead of the server unified MAC address? Did anyone see it in Oracle documentation for Solaris?

In order to avoid MAC address conflicts between the primary and standby NIC's, a unique
ethernet MAC address must be assigned to each network interface (NIC) on the server. On
Solaris, this can be done by setting the "local-mac-address?" PROM variable to TRUE (the
default value is FALSE) on each cluster node.

  • How do i boot from a local Mac OS 9.1 writeable partition???

    hi!
So i have a ibook(dual usb- 500mz), and i am trying to update my firmware tobeable to access a Netgear 'n-gigabit' router. I understand that i need to update my firmware to do this...
The instructions say, "The iBook Firmware Update 4.1.7 will only run on iBook computers running Mac OS 9.1 from a local drive. If you are using Mac OS X you must boot from a local Mac OS 9.1 writeable partition (not a CD, or network disk)"
    Please someone help!!!
    thanx, ronw.

There may be a matter of being able to access the wi-fi hotspot
via WPA or WPA2; and perhaps the computer's settings aren't
correct for whatever connection is available.
Some of the older hardware (wireless in Mac) may not be able
to connect to the 'house wi-fi' in some retail environs where they
may have a secure environment; or if they are using a different
802.11 protocol than the wireless card in the iBook can support.
The earliest color iBooks and the white iBook G3s only support
the 802.11/b wireless protocol. If the wireless base at a coffee
house or other source is set to support 802.11/g/n; that's out.
Some of the USB wireless internet adapters may work, if that is
the case (of having a source whose signal protocol is newer than
the supported version of the older hardware) most of them now
are USB2.0 and the old iBooks have USB1.1 or slow port speeds.
So, you may be able to connect to 802.11/g/n or a default at lower
than the advertised wireless speed, via a USB adapter.
Not sure what else to check, other than some of the settings; or
how the Locations are set up for choosing a new site when you
are traveling and hoping to connect to some unfamiliar wi-fi site.
While all my semi-modern (G4) Macs have wireless and use an
AirPort Extreme card (802.11/b/g) I seldom travel with a computer.
Mostly that's due to weather or total lack of internet when I travel
in somewhat isolated areas. I have no cell. Lucky to have electricity.
Anyway, hopefully that odd issue can be better explained by the
use of settings and perhaps the base station in that location, if
it IS set to be running only the later internet protocols for wi-fi.
+{And you don't need to install an OS9 version if the need for an+
+update to Firmware is no longer a concern. The question is mute.}+
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • I can register my mac. says serial number is incorrect

can anyone help? I cant register my mac as it says my serial is incorrect. i have input the on from about this mac and it says it is still wrong.

I don't know why the serial number from the About This Mac window does not work, but you can try looking for and using the serial number that is physically printed on the surface of the Mac.  This acticle explains where to find it.

  • How to make row number in local member dynamic

I have create multiple local member and the formula I the local member is such as
    =SUM(row11+row14+row16)
then I add another couple of row before row 11, now the formula should be:
    =SUM(row13+row16+row18)
anybody know is there a way how to make the formula in the local member dynamic, which means that if I add rows of drop rows, the formula in local member will automatically change?

    Hi Jian,
You can create local my by "Activate Local Member Recognition", but make sure "Use Position in axis" should be unchecked.
Also make sure you have added all required Local members before any insertion of rows.
    Hope this should work.
    Thanks,
