Remote Database Link

I have to Database set up in 2 different machine. All are having rel 9.2.0.1.0 in them. I am trying to use private fixed database link to connect form one to another(from a 3rd client machine).
say my orcale databases are:
service_name for target database: orcl_tgt.x.y
service_name for source database: orcl_source.p.q
when i create a database link in orcl_target(orcl_tgt.x.y) from a 3rd machine(9i client installed) like this:
CREATE DATABASE LINK "L1" CONNECT TO "user_name"
     IDENTIFIED BY "pswd1"
     USING 'orcl_source.p.q'
it says link created ,but when i try to view data using the link from target
select * from xyz@L1 it says
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name
in our system global_names parameter is set to false in both the databases.
Can anybody suggests how to solve this?

justin is right
first check your tnsname entry
that it will work property
for that first u connect to remote machine by sqlplus
and use tnsname 'orcl_source.p.q'
i think u r not created 'orcl_source.p.q' in tnsname files--------------------------
Cause: The service name specified is not defined correctly in the TNSNAMES.ORA file.
Action: Make the following checks and correct the error:
Verify that a TNSNAMES.ORA file exists and is in the proper place and accessible. See the operating system specific manual for details on the required name and location.
Check to see that the service name exists in one of the TNSNAMES.ORA files and add it if necessary.
Make sure there are no syntax errors anywhere in the file. Particularly look for unmatched parentheses or stray characters. Any error in a TNSNAMES.ORA file makes it unusable. See the Oracle Net Services Administrator's Guide. If possible, regenerate the configuration files using the Oracle Network Manager.
hope it will help you

  • ORACLE 11g + PHP5 problem: "fetch out of sequence" on remote database link

    Hi!
I have a new server with oracle 11g (11.1.0.7) database and apache/php5 (actual build) on linux.
    connection type is dedicated.
when doing a connection to a remote AS/400 database I always get this error:
"Warning: oci_fetch_array() http://function.oci-fetch-array: ORA-01002: fetch out of sequence ORA-02063: preceding line from..."
when doing the same simple "select * from database link" at my old server with oracle 9i and apache/php5 no problem occurrs.
this happens at AS/400 database link only. normal oracle database links work fine.
Anyone an idea how to solve this problem or where the problem is????
    further info:
when doing " select * from [ database link ] where rownum < 11 " it works, but when doing the query with more than 10 results I get the error. Any idea?
    bye,
    Oliver
    Edited by: user501548 on 10.10.2008 02:20

well a fetch out of sequence usually indicates that a cursor has been closed before the process has finished fetching or some such thing.
I'm not aware of there being a specific problem with the situation you outline, but maybe if you could provide all the connection setup and how you are trying to connect that may give a better idea.
Also, you may be better asking on the General Database Discussions forum as this isn't really a SQL or PL/SQL problem

  • Creating a hierarchy based on a remote database link

I am trying to create a hierarchy based on a synonym for a remote database table. The hierarchy wizard works correctly, and the table columns do appear as choices in the drop boxes. However, when I try to run the application, I get the error "No data found. This data does not exist or you do not have privileges to view it". Does anyone know how to resolve this error? Or how to work around this?
I can successfully create and query a form based on the remote table. And, I am able to create a hierarchy from other tables (which do not use a database link) without a problem.
    Thanks for your help!

This is the query which I am using to build a report
    SELECT
    rollup_timestamp "Date",
    max(decode(target_guid,'199F0B201A3D71A63040BADFAA4F9E90',average,0)) host1,
    max(decode(target_guid,'3FB1329F59339C07E11304B69DC4E594',average,0)) host2
    FROM "sysman.MGMT$METRIC_DAILY"
    WHERE

    or
    target_guid='3FB1329F59339C07E11304B69DC4E594')
    AND
    metric_name='Load'
    AND
    metric_column='memUsedPct'
    AND
    rollup_timestamp >= to_date('01-10-2009','dd-mm-yyyy') and rollup_timestamp <= sysdate
    GROUP BY rollup_timestamp
    ORDER BY "Date"
And for your previous question I couldn't even create a page.

  • Apex and remote database links.... Good idea or bad?

We would like to have one single Apex installation that would be used to develop many applications against many remote databases.
Database links would seem to be the obvious mechanism to achieve this goal, but we have had many issues with db links.
Also, our research indicates this might not be a good idea for various reasons.
Any opinions or experiences around this topic would be greatly appreciated.

we have had many issues with db links. In that case it's a bad idea.
It's not really an Apex question. If you can't get db links to work, it's a database issue. If it's performance over the db link, again it's a database issue (assuming modern networks aren't the bottleneck here). Remote views (instead of selecting from remote tables) often increase performance.
If the applications don't have to share data over the db links, you can set up one master application and several sub-applications on the different databases. The master is used to log in once. See:

  • Query builder: tables from Database Link

    Hi APEX people,
Is there a way to use tables from a (remote) Database Link in the Query Builder?
In the Query Builder I seem to have only access to locally (schema) stored tables.
I already tried to define a Synonym for the remote tables I wanted to use, but that didn't work either.
    Thanks in advance.
    Maurice

    Hi,
First of all, can you select from them ie
    SELECT  *
FROM my_table@my_linkAlso you can't see them as tables in the schema because they're not tables in the schema.
    Try creating a view like...
CREATE OR REPLACE FORCE VIEW m_table_vw AS
    SELECT *
FROM my_table@my_link;You should be able to see the view in the schema in the query builder and use that.
    Cheers

  • Unable to create publication item for remote database using db link

The mobile repository is in instance A.
I have to access and sync data from a table in remote database instance B.
I have run the consolidator_rmt.sql script in instance B under schema_B. I have created a private fixed user db link in instance A under schema_A to access schema_B's tables. I then created a synonym test_B for table test_B in schema_B using the DB link.
While creating publication item for test_B using MDW, the column list for test_B appears blank. Has anyone encountered this problem and what is the solution.
    Thanks for your help.

  • 20 Index Restriction on Remote Tables (i.e. using Database Links)

The Oracle Database Administrator's Guides for 10g and 11g document a performance restriction that "No more than 20 indexes are considered for a remote table." If I go back to the 8i documentation it says "In cost-based optimization, no more than 20 indexes per remote table are considered when generating query plans. The order of the indexes varies; if the 20-index limitation is exceeded, random variation in query plans may result."
Does anyone have more details on this performance restriction? In particular I am trying to answer these questions:
    1) Are the 20 indexes which are considered by the CBO still random in 10g?
    2) Can I influence which indexes are considered with index hints or will my hints only be considered if they are for one of the "random" 20 indexes which are being considered by the CBO?
    3) Are there any other approaches or work-arounds to this restriction assuming you need to select from a large remote table with more than 20 indexes (and need to perform the selection using 1 of those indexes to get adequate performance) or do we need to abandon database links for this table?
Thanks in advance for your input.

  • Unable to access remote database object using database link

    Hi all,
I have created a database link to a remote server
    SQL> create database link remote_link connect to lax_dba identified by lax_dba using 'abc.corp.com';
    database link created
when i am trying to access any table of lax_dba
    sql> select * from laxtab@remote_link;
i am getting this Ora error
ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect
I need your help please to solve this issue
    Thanks n Regards
    Laxman

The database server where you defined the link (not your PC) has resolved 'abc.corp.com' to a server/port/service combination using its tnsnames.ora, sqlnet.ora and possibly ldap.ora settings. You can try
tnsping abc.corp.comon the server (as ReubenC suggested) to see what it's attempting to connect to. (It's important to do this on the database server and not on your PC as they will have different tns settings etc.)
It has then found the server and found a listener running on it (so you're getting close), but that remote listener doesn't recognise the service you're asking for. It might be something like the '.com' suffix.

  • How to Execute a Remote Procedure in Portal using Database Link

    Hi,
I followed the instructions to create a Portal form for a remote procedure. But I am encountering the following error. Can someone advise what may be the cause?
    Failed to execute - Missing string(create_package_body) language(us) domain (wwv) sub_domain (wwv_builder) (WWV-04300)
ORA-04020: deadlock detected while trying to lock object PUBLIC.PORTLET_SCHEMA (WWV-11230)
Failed to parse as PORTAL - (WWV-08300)
    PURPOSE
How to execute a remote procedure in Portal using Database Link.
    DESCRIPTION
This procedure assumes that you have two databases, one of which is remote, and Portal is configured in the other.
    Remote Database A:
    ==================
    1) Create a procedure as follows: Create or Replace PROCEDURE SCOTT.ADD_TWO_VALUES ( v_one IN NUMBER, v_two IN NUMBER, v_result OUT NUMBER) as begin v_result :=v_one+v_two; end; 2) Grant execute privileges to PUBLIC on the procedure.
Database B (where Portal is configured): ========================================
    1) Create a public database link and choose to connect as a specific user (say SYSTEM). By default, in an Oracle 8i database, the "global_names" parameter in initSID.ora (or init.ora) file is set to "true". This Global Naming parameter enforces that a dblink has the same name as the database it connects to. Therefore, if the remote global database (A) name is "ora8.acme.com" then the database link should also be named as "ora8.acme.com".
    2) Create a synonym for the procedure in Database A. Make sure you fully qualify the procedure name in the remote database (like SCOTT.ADD_TWO_VALUES).
    3) Create a dynamic page to execute the procedure. The ORACLE tags in the dynamic page will look similar to the following: <ORACLE> DECLARE v_total NUMBER; BEGIN ADD_TWO_VALUES(:v_one,:v_two, v_total); htp.p('The total is => '); htp.p('<input type="TEXT" VALUE='||v_total||'>'); htp.para; htp.anchor('http://<machine.domain:port#>/pls/portal30/SCOTT.DYN_ADD_TWO_VALUES.show_parms', 'Re-Execute Procedure'); END; </ORACLE>
    4) Portal does not have an option to create a form based on a synonym. Therefore, if you want to create a form instead of a dynamic page, create a wrapper procedure and then create a form based on this procedure. For example: Create or Replace PROCEDURE PORTAL30.ADD_TWO_VALUES_PR ( v_one IN NUMBER, v_two IN NUMBER, v_total OUT NUMBER) as begin add_two_values(v_one, v_two, v_total); end;
    5) Grant execute privileges to PUBLIC on the procedure.

    hello...
    any input will welcomed... Thanks..

My apex application is running on our server.
I need to connect to a remote server to get data from there.for that i need to create a database link from apex.
When i tried to create a database link from apex sql commands window it is showing insufficient privilages.
So i created one database link from back end but it is not accessible from apex...
can some one help me in this...
    its urgent.....
    thanks in advance

    Hi,
You need create database link to schema that is assigned to your workspace (application parsing schema)
Schema need have CREATE DATABASE LINK system privilege.

  • Connecting to remote database without using db links

    Referred Thread:
Re: Remote DB connection without DB link
In reference to the thread above, my question goes like this:
Let's say I want to run a query from a database and use data from another database. I have the user, password, SID and port number of the other database but do not want to create a separate connection using sqlplus or connect commands.
    Something like this:
    SQL> show user
    USER is "A"
    SQL> select a.col1, b.col2 from tab1 a, tab2@????? where <some condition>;
Can this connection be done on the fly ?? I agree that a DB link will do the trick, but let's say I am not supposed to create objects on the other database.

You need two sets of privs on the remote database to view data in that database schema:
    - create session (the schema must allow client connections to create schema sessions)
    - select on other schema tables whose contents to view
You need a single priv on the local database, to connect to that remote schema on the other database:
    - create database link
You also need the following in order to create the db link:
    - the remote schema name and password
    - IP address or hostname of the remote db server
    - the remote Listener's tcp endpoint port
    - the name of the remote database (SID, instance or service name)
If you do not have these privs, you cannot use/access the remote database from the local database session via a database link.
Other alternative methods needs additional privileges and objects on both the remote and local database sides - and are more complex (e.g. using web services, using web-enabled procedures, etc).

  • Database link hangs from source 10204 to remote 9208

    Hi,
I have a sql job that runs sql statements on database 10204 connecting to database 9208 via a database link. The job takes about half hour to complete. The source database, 10204 connects to remote 9208 to retreive data from 9208. Most of the processing is performed on the remote db. For some reason, after processing sql statements on remote db, the job hangs. I looked at wait events on remote and it shows "SQL*Net message from client". I looked at wait events on source database and it shows "SQL*Net message from dblink".
It looks to me that there is something wrong with the communication between the source and remote db via the db link.
I tried setting the default_sdu_size from 2k to 8k but this does not help the hanging. I tried runing the job at different times in the day and night but this does not help either. I filed an SR with metalink and they asked me to run trace. I sent them the trace files and they came back saying to bounce the databases. I bounce the databases and still that did not resolve the hanging. Anyone encounter this issue lately? Thank you in advance.

I have seen this before between 2 10g databases, but very rarely, and never identified the cause, so suspected it was from a network glitch. Solution was to kill the hung sessions and restart.
Setup some network tests and leave them running. E.g ping tests, scp tests, and/or open ssh sessions to see if you lose any packets when the database link fails. Check your OS logs for network interface errors. Check if there are any firewalls between the databases which may disconnect inactive sessions.

  • Calling remote procedure through database link

    Hi,

  • Query a remote table with Database Links

How do database links work with ODP.NET? The following code produces an "ORA-02041: client database did not begin a transaction" error on the Fill method.
    SQL (in acme instance):
    CREATE DATABASE LINK sales.hq.acme.com
CONNECT TO scott IDENTIFIED BY tiger
    USING 'sales'
    VB .NET:
    Dim cn As New OracleConnection("Data Source=acme;User ID=scott;Password=tiger;")
Dim da As New OracleDataAdapter("SELECT * FROM [email protected]", cn)
    Dim ds As New DataSet
    da.Fill(ds, "RemoteEmp")

Just read running procedure on remote db???
    Changed first line to
    Dim cn As New OracleConnection("Data Source=acme;User ID=scott;Password=tiger;Enlist=false")
    and it works now.
That's what I get for searching the forum instead of browsing.
