Remote Desktop disconnected because of security error from Windows 8.1 Surface to Server 2008

Hello,
I am trying
to connect to a remote app on a 2008 server from a surface pro 3 with 8.1
through Netilla SSL VPN and I getting the following error message.
Remote Desktop Disconnected
Because of a security error, the client could not connect to the remote computer Verify that you are logged on to the network and then try connection again
if I am connected to the network and use the RDP file, it connects fine.
This
was previosluly working, but when I changed the terminal server to per user
license mode from trial mode this happen
This works fine from Windows 7 machines.<o:p></o:p>
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Derek

Hi Derek,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
From the error itself it seems that there is some network connection issue with VPN. Kindly see that you get network when you are using VPN connection, also VPN must be running. You can also try to “ping” the remote computer and see whether there is successful
ping result.
Also try to use “Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop” option on server side and check whether you can remote desktop successfully.
Apart this issue can also be caused due to certificate as VPN can’t resolve the certificate properly and facing this issue because you are facing issue only with usage of VPN (as you have commented). Please check
this link for detail.
Hope it helps!
Thanks.

We are using Windows Server 2012 Standard installed in VMWare / Virtual machine and to access this we use vSphere client and Remote Desktop Connection / service was already enabled and was working fine with User PCs / laptops remote desktop into the server
2012, until it gave an error message of: Remote session was disconnected because there are no remote desktop license servers available to provide a license.  Please contact the server administrator. whilst logging into the server.
We DON'T use Active Directory nor and we don't use domain and not looking to use it any-time soon.
I checked the RD Licensing Diagnoser and it says the grace period has expired and the licensing mode for the remote desktop session host server is not configured.  I have checked the Remote Desktop Gateway has been stopped and I tried to start it and it
resumed to stop, here I assume its where the licensing part comes in to re-enabled this.
I have been trying to follow these articles online: http://ryanmangansitblog.com/2013/03/27/deploying-remote-desktop-gateway-rds-2012/ and http://www.concurrency.com/blog/rds8-add-a-licensing-server-2/#Install  the overview part that I cannot get into,
because I think we have to be is AD DS for this which we don't.  Is there a way around this for non domain / just standalone set-up?  Is it a must / requirement we need to be in a domain in order for Remote Desktop Connection to work?
Also, we have a Windows Server 2012 RDS CALs - 10 (software and licence key), will the licence key work for the Windows 2012 Server Standard?  We do not want to install the other Server mentioned which comes with CAL / licence key as its time consuming
to reinstall other programs.  I have installed  Server role service of Remote Desktop Licencing and automatically installed other associated services needed.  in the RD Licencing Manager, the Server had a red cross and I "Activate Server"
where I followed: http://www.concurrency.com/blog/rds8-add-a-licensing-server-2/#Install in Install Licences section and I have used the licence key of CAL - 10 mentioned above; it stated I have successfully completed the install licences wizard and displayed:
10 Windows Server 2012 - RDS Per User CAL installed, and in the RD Licensing Manager the server turned into a green tick and added the licence.
I then tested the Remote desktop connection from my PC and the same error message was there and checked the RD Licensing Diagnoser and the same error messages was there.  I haven't restart the services of Remote Gateway / the server itself; do I really
    need to reboot server?
Any advice / guidance would be very much appreciated and this is a urgent matter.

  • Error "The remote connection was disconnected because there are no Remote Desktop License Servers available to provide a license. Please contact the server administrator"

    Hi,
I have been using Windows server 2012 at my company and generally take a remote access to this server. However, since last few days, I have been receiving the Error "The remote connection was disconnected because there are no Remote Desktop License
Servers available to provide a license. Please contact the server administrator".
My entire work has come to a halt because of this error as all my applications are running this server and their remote access is needed for my regular requirements.
I had tried one of the solutions proposed at one of these forums especially using gpedit.msc but to no avail.

    Hi Aditya,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Agree with the words of armin, please verify that you have properly installed correctly. Verify RDS Licensing service running on License Server. Verify that the client, the RDS server, and the license server can communicate by ensuring that Domain Name System
(DNS) is configured correctly on each computer. You can run the ping command from each computer to each computer using the IP address, FQDN, and the NetBIOS name. If any of the ping commands fail, verify the DNS configuration on the network.
In addition, you can also try “GracePeriod” registry setting on this path (HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\RCM) from
    this article.
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

Now, Down I am getting this error as well shown by the system:

Win-909xxxxxxxxxx : The grace period for the Remote Desktop Session Host server has Expired, but the RD Session Host server has not been configured with any license servers. connections to the RD Session Host server will be denied
unless a license server is configured for the RD Session Host server.

Do I just buy the RDS client access license (L).
Please could you help on this, am new in windows server?

    Hi,
As the message indicates, the grace period for the Remote Desktop Session Host server has Expired, you need to purchase and install RDS CALs. Also, you need to configure related settings
to continue using Remote Desktop Services. Otherwise, you cannot connect to the server remotely.

  • Because of security error...... - X509 Certificates problem

    Good Morning everyone.
I`ve got W2008 R2 with Terminal License already activated by telephone. My server is running and is active, I`ve got licenses (CAL 5 per User). Despite this fact my server still creates X509 Certifictates, which block my second, third, etc connection to
    server.
Other workstation - Windows XP - try to connect via RDP to server and use RemoteApps (IE, Acrobat Reader). Connection was working in "trial version" of Terminal Server - 120 days, but when I`ve activated it, install all licenses can`t connect
to server, cause "Security error" message. I found that X509 Cert. are the reason and I should activate server as Terminal License Server using phone activation with Microsoft and then other certificate will be create, but not. I`ve done this
several times, with deleting X509 entriers in Windows Registry, restart server. Every time, when workstation is trying to connect to W2008 Server new X509 are creating in Registry and error message apears.
Could You help me please in this case?
    Best Regards.
    Dawid

    Hi Dawid,
Thank you for your posting in Windows Server Forum.
Initially please check whether you have RDP 7 installed on Windows XP as suggested by TP. In addition, suggest you to try creating new certificate and check the result. please check below articles.
    1.  Create Trusted Remote Desktop Services (RDP) SSL Certificate
    2.  Remote Desktop disconnected or can’t connect to remote computer or to Remote Desktop server (Terminal Server) that is running Windows Server 2008 R2

  • Remote desktop connection. An internal error has occurred.

    Hello,
The error occurs from a Windows 7 Home computer to a Windows 7 Professional computer.
I connect successfully through a Sonic Wall VPN client.
I can ping the IP address of the remote computer.
I run remote desktop (using IP address of the remote computer) and get error:
"Remote desktop connection.  An internal error has occurred."
It used to work flawlessly and all of a sudden quit working.
    Please advise.

It was a VPN configuration issue on the Sonic Wall.
What was the VPN configuration issue on the Sonicwall?

If they have set up port forwarding for you already then that is different.  In that case, then you could be experiencing the bug with the most recent release of ARD (3.7.2) and in particular ARD 3.7.2 and Yosemite ARD version 3.8 clients.  It has been reported numerous times in the forums and to Apple that since 3.7.2, clients are frequently unavailable to connect to despite there being no network issue between the remote computer and client computer.  I have not seen anyone report it who was working from outside the LAN to inside the LAN, but I have the same issue with a number of my own computers that are simply on a different subnet, so it stands rot reason that it would happen from a port forwarding location.
I am sometimes able to resolve the issue locally by SSH connecting into the client computer using Terminal on my admin machine and restarting or relaunching the ARD agent on the remote device, then trying to connect to it again after about 30 seconds.
The Terminal commands for this procedure are as follows, though you might need to include a port number from outside the LAN:
    First:
    ssh ipaddress -l adminusername
    (example: ssh 192.168.1.1 -l macadmin)
    Second:
    sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/k ickstart -restart -agent
After that, waiting about 30 seconds and trying to observe or control usually works, though the computer may still fail to show an online or lit-up status indicator.

Though Bill is absolutely correct for most CALs, Remote Desktop Services does have its own special licensing server.  I haven't installed one on 2012, yet, but here is a step-by-step guide for 2008.

But, the explanation of your environment begs the question - what are you trying to do?  You say you have a desktop OS and you are talking about Windows Server products.  In that light, your question does not make a lot of sense.

  • Remote Desktop Connection Authentication Error from Windows 8.1 Pro to Windows 7 Pro

I keep trying to connect to my server running Windows 7 Pro from my laptop running Windows 8.1 Pro, but I get the following message after providing
    my credentials:
"An authentication error has occurred (Code: 0x8007001f)"
I can't find any reference to this error code being associated with using remote desktop.

    Hello,
Are you connecting to a server as part of a domain ? if so confirm you are using adequate credentials for remote desktop for example: username: domain\administrator
if not you can try connecting to the localhost using:
    username: .\administrator   - for example
also you can try running your remote connection in admin mode:
Win + R - bring up run then type:
    mstsc /admin
    hope that helps.

  • Remote Desktop disconnects immediately. Error 4005; Windows logon process has unexpectedly terminated.

Hi, I have always been able to remote into my pc (Win 8.1) using remote desktop. Just recently this stopped working. Either I get a blank screen for about 10 seconds and then it closes or the connection closes immediately. Every time this happens I get error
4005 in the event log; Windows logon process has unexpectedly terminated. It seems the remote desktop stopped working after the last set of Windows updates were applied. But no other web searches indicates anyone else has had this problem recently. I've also
read the Windows Server document or error 4005 which suggests my registry may be corrupt or a service may be stopped but this does not seem to apply to my situation. I'm stumped and without being able to remote into my pc from my office I can't do my job.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
UPDATE: After installing a new required Windows update and a bunch of optional Windows updates (that I had been ignoring), the problem has been fixed. I'm guessing which ever Windows update broke Remote Desktop was fixed in the latest update(s).

    Hi arzoo1,
So you have checked the steps mentioned in the article below?
Event ID 4005 — Windows Logon Availability
You may take a try with Dism /online /cleanup-image /resorehealth command and then check if issue insists.
For Windows Update related, please consider system restore or startup repair.
Try to boot into clean boot and then remote again to check if issue insists.

  • Remote session was disconnected because there are no remote desktop license servers available to provide a license. Please contact the server administrator."

I am the Server Administrator and have server 2012 Standard running on a single computer for our small (50 employee) company.  It's primary role is to house one software application that manages our data.  Our employees need to remotely access this
server to use this software program.  For the last 4 months we have successfully done that using Remote Desktop.
Unfortunately our RDS trial period ran out on our Server, and so I have recently installed 21 RDS User CALs on to the server to still be able to access this server remotely.  When I installed them, using the Install Wizard, I selected 'User CALs' as that
is what they are.  However, when I try to use remote desktop and access the server remotely, I get the message: "remote session was disconnected because there are no remote desktop license servers available to provide a license"
Do I have to install the RDS User CALs as Device CALs instead even though they are USER CALs?? Did I forget to check a box or something?  Please help!  We are a Non-Profit and really can't afford Microsoft's $260 support fee when I have a feeling
this has got to be an easy solution.

    Hi,
    1. Did you create an RDS deployment or just install the RD Session Host and RD Licensing Role Services on your server?
    2. If yes to #1, have you set the licensing mode and licensing server name in Server Manager -- RDS -- Overview -- Tasks -- Edit Deployment Properties -- RD Licensing tab?  Did you make your RDSH server part of a collection?  The RDSH server must
be part of a collection in order for the deployment settings to apply.
    3. If no to #1, then please set the licensing mode/specify the licensing server name via group policy setting.  For example, you could use gpedit.msc and configure the following settings:
Computer Configuration\ Administrative Templates\ Windows Components\ Remote Desktop Services\ Remote Desktop Session Host\ Licensing
Use the specified Remote Desktop licensing servers
Set the Remote Desktop licensing mode
    Thanks.

  • The remote session was disconnected because there are no Remote Desktop License Servers available to provide a license. Please contact the server administrator.

I recently installed 21 Remote Desktop Services (RDS) User CALs on my Server 2012 standard computer.  It was an Open License donation from Microsoft as we are a non-profit.  After installing them successfully (I installed them as USER and not DEVICE)
the warning message that my "remote desktop services will expire in 63 days" message no longer appears :) however, I can no longer connect to our server remotely.  Our staff needs to access a single data management program on a daily basis and
that program is housed on our server computer.
I know that the solution to this is probably easy (like checking a box or installing a component).  Can you please help?  Why would we have been able to access the server remotely before the install of RDS User CALs and not after?
Thank you for your time and help in this regard.

    Hi,
Thank you for your posting in Windows Server Forum.
First of all the user which you want to provide access for remote session must be member of “Remote Desktop User” local group.
In regards to your error it seems that your RDS license server not able to locate the license server properly and licensing mode not configured properly. To resolve this issue you can try to change the Licensing mode or need to call the MS clearing house to
reactivate the license server in a correct mode. You must have all the license paper and all related document on hand and then call clearing house, explain them your issue and they will help you to reactivate it.
Please check beneath article for additional details.

  • Remote Desktop Connection stop working after upgrade from 10.5.8 to 10.6.1

I too could not connect to a W2K3 server with RDC 2.0.1 after upgrading from Mac OS X, 10.5.8 to 10.6/10.6.1. I have another Mac which is on 10.5.8 and connect fine with the same version of RDC 2.0.1 as well as other PC with Terminal Service Clients.
There is no change on the server side. I have uninstalled and reinstalled RDC 2.0.1 several time and it did not resolve the issue. To rule out firewall/network, I tested with another remote desktop application called CoRD (for Mac) on the same laptop running SL 10.6.1 and it connected to the same W2K3 server fine.
One thing that is worth mentioning (in my case), when it does not connect, RDC totally quit (not running anymore. Not minimize, no cannot connect error message, no little dot on the Dock for RDC, nothing) right after I put in the credential in. Doing some more troubleshooting after my post above as I saw a couple of entries referencing Stop Light keep popping up in the log of the Console. I removed Stoplight and Cocoa Gesture (for good meausre) and RDC 2.0.1 started working. I think it is Stop Light which causes RDC stop working, but I don't have to time right now to put Cocoa Gesture back to confirm that. I might if I have the time or post here if you have Stop Light installed as well and removing it resolved the RDC issue for you.
