Remote desktop licensing on separate server

I would like to deploy Remote Desktop Services on Windows Server 2012 R2.
My idea is isolate the Remote Desktop Licensing role from other Remote Desktop Services roles and put Remote Desktop Licensing role to separate server which is also KMS host ?
Is that a good idea ?
Thanks !!

Hi,
Thanks for your comment. Sorry for late reply.
Yeah, you can put the RD License server on separate server and then use the other server to add roles when needed. But please see that, there must be one of the configuration for RD Licensing server.
For both Per Device and Per User CALs issuance to work, the RD Session Host and RD Licensing server in any one of the following three configurations:
• Both in the same workgroup
• Both in the same domain
• Both in the trusted (Two-way trust) Active Directory Domains or Forest

  • Windows Server 2012 Used: Error Message from Windows 7 PC: Remote session was disconnected because there are no remote desktop license servers available to provide a license. Please contact the server administrator.

We are using Windows Server 2012 Standard installed in VMWare / Virtual machine and to access this we use vSphere client and Remote Desktop Connection / service was already enabled and was working fine with User PCs / laptops remote desktop into the server
2012, until it gave an error message of: Remote session was disconnected because there are no remote desktop license servers available to provide a license.  Please contact the server administrator. whilst logging into the server.
We DON'T use Active Directory nor and we don't use domain and not looking to use it any-time soon.
I checked the RD Licensing Diagnoser and it says the grace period has expired and the licensing mode for the remote desktop session host server is not configured.  I have checked the Remote Desktop Gateway has been stopped and I tried to start it and it
resumed to stop, here I assume its where the licensing part comes in to re-enabled this.
I have been trying to follow these articles online: http://ryanmangansitblog.com/2013/03/27/deploying-remote-desktop-gateway-rds-2012/ and http://www.concurrency.com/blog/rds8-add-a-licensing-server-2/#Install  the overview part that I cannot get into,
because I think we have to be is AD DS for this which we don't.  Is there a way around this for non domain / just standalone set-up?  Is it a must / requirement we need to be in a domain in order for Remote Desktop Connection to work?
Also, we have a Windows Server 2012 RDS CALs - 10 (software and licence key), will the licence key work for the Windows 2012 Server Standard?  We do not want to install the other Server mentioned which comes with CAL / licence key as its time consuming
to reinstall other programs.  I have installed  Server role service of Remote Desktop Licencing and automatically installed other associated services needed.  in the RD Licencing Manager, the Server had a red cross and I "Activate Server"
where I followed: http://www.concurrency.com/blog/rds8-add-a-licensing-server-2/#Install in Install Licences section and I have used the licence key of CAL - 10 mentioned above; it stated I have successfully completed the install licences wizard and displayed:
10 Windows Server 2012 - RDS Per User CAL installed, and in the RD Licensing Manager the server turned into a green tick and added the licence.
I then tested the Remote desktop connection from my PC and the same error message was there and checked the RD Licensing Diagnoser and the same error messages was there.  I haven't restart the services of Remote Gateway / the server itself; do I really
    need to reboot server?
Any advice / guidance would be very much appreciated and this is a urgent matter.
    Thank you for your time.

    Hi,
Please let us know if you have purchased RDS CALs and install it in your RD licensing server.
Also, on RD Session host servers, please make sure that you have specified the license mode and point them to the RD licensing server.

  • User can remote to server even reach the total of Remote Desktop License

    Hi,
I have 15 remote desktop license. But when I check there are 19 user that currently remote to server.
May I know why they still can remote to server even have reach maximum total RDP license?
My server is Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard.

Easy. Per user licensing is not enforced by windows. The RDP server only needs to be able to reach a licensing server. If it is configured for per-user licensing, it will never do anything, licensing wise. It is up to the administrator to ensure that enough
licenses are available in case of an audit. This is a paper exercise, not a technical limitation.

  • Remote session was disconnected because there are no remote desktop license servers available to provide a license. Please contact the server administrator."

I am the Server Administrator and have server 2012 Standard running on a single computer for our small (50 employee) company.  It's primary role is to house one software application that manages our data.  Our employees need to remotely access this
server to use this software program.  For the last 4 months we have successfully done that using Remote Desktop.
Unfortunately our RDS trial period ran out on our Server, and so I have recently installed 21 RDS User CALs on to the server to still be able to access this server remotely.  When I installed them, using the Install Wizard, I selected 'User CALs' as that
is what they are.  However, when I try to use remote desktop and access the server remotely, I get the message: "remote session was disconnected because there are no remote desktop license servers available to provide a license"
Do I have to install the RDS User CALs as Device CALs instead even though they are USER CALs?? Did I forget to check a box or something?  Please help!  We are a Non-Profit and really can't afford Microsoft's $260 support fee when I have a feeling
this has got to be an easy solution.

    Hi,
    1. Did you create an RDS deployment or just install the RD Session Host and RD Licensing Role Services on your server?
    2. If yes to #1, have you set the licensing mode and licensing server name in Server Manager -- RDS -- Overview -- Tasks -- Edit Deployment Properties -- RD Licensing tab?  Did you make your RDSH server part of a collection?  The RDSH server must
be part of a collection in order for the deployment settings to apply.
    3. If no to #1, then please set the licensing mode/specify the licensing server name via group policy setting.  For example, you could use gpedit.msc and configure the following settings:
Computer Configuration\ Administrative Templates\ Windows Components\ Remote Desktop Services\ Remote Desktop Session Host\ Licensing
Use the specified Remote Desktop licensing servers
Set the Remote Desktop licensing mode
    Thanks.

  • Error "The remote connection was disconnected because there are no Remote Desktop License Servers available to provide a license. Please contact the server administrator"

    Hi,
I have been using Windows server 2012 at my company and generally take a remote access to this server. However, since last few days, I have been receiving the Error "The remote connection was disconnected because there are no Remote Desktop License
Servers available to provide a license. Please contact the server administrator".
My entire work has come to a halt because of this error as all my applications are running this server and their remote access is needed for my regular requirements.
I had tried one of the solutions proposed at one of these forums especially using gpedit.msc but to no avail.
    Regards,
    Aditya

    Hi Aditya,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Agree with the words of armin, please verify that you have properly installed correctly. Verify RDS Licensing service running on License Server. Verify that the client, the RDS server, and the license server can communicate by ensuring that Domain Name System
(DNS) is configured correctly on each computer. You can run the ping command from each computer to each computer using the IP address, FQDN, and the NetBIOS name. If any of the ping commands fail, verify the DNS configuration on the network.
In addition, you can also try “GracePeriod” registry setting on this path (HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\RCM) from
    this article.
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

  • Error in configuring remote desktop license

    Hello --
I am going through the motions of configuring remote desktop licensing through the windows powershell. The commands that I have entered are the following:
    $obj = gwmi –namespace “Root/CIMV2/TerminalServices” Win32_TerminalServiceSetting
    $obj.ChangeMode(2)
The following command is what I have used on other Windows 2012 servers to have the system in question point to the license server that will be servicing it:
    $obj.SetSpecifiedLicenseServerList(“PHSCTXLS03”)
However, the error message that I am encountering is as follows:
    Exception calling “SetSpecifiedLicenseServerList” | “”

  • Can I build Azure RemoteApp template without Remote Desktop License ?

Can I build Azure RemoteApp template without Remote Desktop License ?
I want to build and update the Azure RemoteApp template by using same Hyper-V guest image continue.
    Message:
"Remote Desktop licensing mode is not configured"
    Environment 1: my on-premises Hyper-V guest.
Environment 2: my Azure Virtual Machine by "Windows Server Remote Desktop Session Host" image.
    Regards,
    Yoshihiro Kawabata

    Hi Yoshihiro,
If you are referring to RDS CAL, the answer is yes, you can build a template
without having an RDS CAL.  For on-premises you would still need rights to install Windows Server as a guest, but to build the template you do not need an RDS CAL because this use is for administrative purposes.
In the case of building the image on an Azure Virtual Machine you do not need Windows Server license since that is included in the pricing for the Virtual Machine.  As mentioned above you do not need an RDS CAL since you are only building a template
    image which is administrative use.
As always please review the appropriate documents that apply to your situation such as the Online Service Terms (OST), Product Use Rights (PUR), license agreement(s), etc. for precise details.
    Thanks.

  • Guideline of installing remote desktop services in window server 2012 r2

    Hi,
I tried to install remote desktop services in window server 2012, I joined my current domain ( in window server 2003).
During installation, it require me to promote my server to domain controller? This is one of the requirement for remote desktop services?
If I didnt join any domain, it prompt me I must join a domain.
Anyone can advise me? provide me a steps by steps guide will be perfect!
    Thanks

    Hi GP_IT001,
In your current network do you currently have a domain controller? You mentioned that you "had" a Domain Controller running Windows Server 2003.
Am I correct in thinking that you no longer have this server?
    As this article mentions:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/f3d0543a-edab-4eb2-8360-3658a3351bb0/licensing-issue?forum=winserverTS
You will need a domain environment which means you'll need a server that is a domain controller, and I believe that it will also need to operate Windows Server 2012 or above. You could, if you wanted, setup a new server (virtual or physical) as a domain
controller and use that if you wish.

  • Remote desktop licensing mode is not configured

remote desktop service will stop working because this computer is past its licensing grace period. on the rd connection broker server, use server manager too specify the remote desktop licensing mode and the license server.

    Hi,
You need to setup the mode of RD License Server and make sure that RDSH is pointing to RD License Server.
Here are detailed instructions for it.

  • No Remote Desktop Licensing Service?

You are going to need ti give a bit more information here, there are many versions and each has it's own methods.
    Which OS 2012R2 or?
Is the licensing server a dedicated VM or does it share functionality?
    Where does it never appear?

I am trying to migrate my citrix server and when I install remote desktop licensing the service never appears. So When I go into licensing manager, it says there may be an issue with the service.  Does anyone know how to fix this?

  • Remote Desktop and Snow Leopard Server

What is the best way to use Remote Desktop with Snow Leopard Server?
I purchased a mac mini with snow leopard server and Remote desktop so I can easily manage my 11 computers, install and upgrade software etc. etc.
The mac mini server will basically be nothing but a server.
I will use as my main computer a mac pro. Do I need to install Remote Desktop on the server and on my mac pro? What is the best way to deploy the services of Remote desktop and mac os x server?

You install Apple Remote Desktop on the machine you want to control from. In this case, install on your Mac Pro. All you have to do on the clients (controlled Macs) is enable remote management in the System Preferences under Sharing. Just make sure that all your controlled Macs are up to date on their ARD version (v3.3.2) which can be taken care of from Software Update.
