Installing Oracle 8i on Solaris 9
I have tried to install Solaris 8i on solaris9 with no success.
The error massages I got were:
- Oracle not available
- Shared memory realsm does not exit
The kernel parameter set is:
set shmsys:shminfo_shmmax=4294967295
set shmsys:shminfo_shmmin=1
set shmsys:shminfo_shmmni=100
set shmsys:shminfo_shmseg=10
set semsys:seminfo_semmns=2000
set semsys:seminfo_semmsl=1000
set semsys:seminfo_semmni=100
set semsys:seminfo_semopm=100
set semsys:seminfo_semvmx=32767
unset TWO_TASK
Plus all the enrironment variables set up correcty.
With the same configuation, i successfully install 8i on Solaris 8.
Could anyone help, please?
Thankshave a look in your $ORACLE_HOME/dbs directory. If the init<ORACLE_SID>.ora file has remote_login_password=exclusive then you should also have a file called orapw<ORACLE_SID>. If you haven't, then create one by running "orapwd file=orapw<ORACLE_SID> password=internal entries=5".
This has worked for me in the past, hope it helps.

PSAPPD1 ONLINE* ONLINEHi again
Please let me know whether we need to put the parameter remote_login_password=exclusive in pfile or spfile
I prefer the spfile, just:
SQL> alter system set remote_login_passwordfile = exclusive scope = spfile;
To grant sysoper to system:
SQL> grant sysoper to system;
And restart the instance.

Problem with REMOTE_LOGIN_PASSWORDFILE ?
Dear Friends ,
I am little bit confused the below matter of "REMOTE_LOGIN_PASSWORDFILE" . From Oracle8 Administrator's Guide (Release 8.0 ; A58397-01) ,
I got the following statement when :
code:
Remote_login_password file is EXCLUSIVE then ,
" An Exclusive password file can be used with only one database . Only an EXCLUSIVE file can contain the names of users oter than SYS and INTERNAL . Using an EXCLUSIVE password file allows you to grant SYSDBA and SYSOPER system privileges to individual users and have them connect as themselves. "
Now I have the following questions about the statement :
1) "An Exclusive password file can be used with only one database" , is it One database or used only for an INSTANCE ?
2) "Only an EXCLUSIVE file can contain the names of users oter than SYS and INTERNAL ." that means , when I use EXCLUSIVE , then all users of the database (with SYS ) passwords are stored in PASSWORD File , is it ?
And If I set it SHARED , then password file does not carry all user's password ? , then it just contain the SYS password . Plz explain ....
3) "Using an EXCLUSIVE password file allows you to grant SYSDBA and SYSOPER system privileges to individual users" what does it mean ? In EXCLUSIVE mode I can give the SYSDBA privilege to all normal users of the database ?
If It is SHARED , then I cannot give this privileges to normal user . is this correct ?
Plz inform me .... ....
Thx in Advance .Thx Friend for your Document .
But still I have a confusion ,
> 1) From Document , I get ,
> When REMOTE_LOGIN_ PASSWORDFILE=Shared , then
SHARED: A SHARED password file can be used by multiple databases running on the same server. However, the >only user recognized by a SHARED password file is SYS. You cannot add users to a SHARED password file. All users >needing SYSDBA or SYSOPER system privileges must connect using the same name, SYS, and password. This >option is useful if you have a single DBA administering multiple databases.Would you plz tell me , How can I share a password file for multiple database . Because I know every database has its own password file ?
2) About ENTRIES of the passwd file , I got :>This parameter specifies the number of entries that you require the password file to accept. This number >corresponds to the number of distinct users allowed to connect to the database as SYSDBA or SYSOPER. The >actual number of allowable entries can be higher than the number of users, because the ORAPWD utility continues >to assign password entries until an operating system block is filled. For example, if your operating system block size >is 512 bytes, it holds four password entries. The number of password entries allocated is always a multiple of four.
Here , what the meaning of Entries ? Does it refers Number of users or Number of Blocks as entriy . And If I set with password file "Entries=2" then how can I check this that it is working ?
Last Question ,
From an existing password File which is created using DBCA , How can I find the Number of Entries used in that >file ? Is there any query or tools to read the passwrod file ?Plz inform and also Sorry for disturb .. ...

Problems Installing Oracle 8i on Gateway laptop W/ 1.6 GHz CPU
I'm having problems installing Oracle 8i on a Gateway 600X with a 1.6 GHz CPU and Windows 2000 Professional. The Install/DeInstall screen appears, I click Install/Deinstall, the screen disappears, the hourglass disappears a couple seconds later, and the the install ends without any messages. I tried installing on slower machines and the software seems to install correctly. Is there an issue with Intel's new Mobile Pentium 4 processors or Gateway's laptops?
Thanks,
Mikehave a look in your $ORACLE_HOME/dbs directory.

ORA-01017 from SQL Developer while using SYS account
Hi,
We are seeing "ora-1017:invalid username/password" when trying to connect using sys user as SYSDBA Role in SQL Developer. The same account works fine in SQL*plus. The remote_login_password param is set to EXCLUSIVE and the file orapw$SID is also there.
Any inputs to resolve this error is appreciated.
Thanks
SathyaAs sqlplus seems to be working for you and sqldeveloper has its own forum, please post this in the sqldeveloper forum.

Hi,
Having some issues on Autolog CDC configuration setup. Hotlog setup works perfectly.
I don't see Oracle Stream is capturing changed data from source arch log into stage database. But Stream background process is started and waiting for notification.
v$streams_capture STATE shows "WAITING FOR DICTIONARY REDO ".
Any ideas?, if anyone did this kind setup please let me know.
I verified and updated
Log_Archive_dest_1 / 2 on both DBs,
streams_pool_size,
remote_login_password is same on both DB,
standby_archive_dest on stageDB,
and SGA parameters.
thank you.Hello Sunvenk,
we are working on the same problem as you.
A few days ago we had Oracle Consulting in our house and with their help, we managed to implement the example out of the CDC Cookbook. Following this Cookbook, everthing works perfekt. But, as in your case, we now tried to reuse the example on our productive system... "WAITING FOR DICTIONARY REDO ".
Thanks in advance for some solutions for this issue.
Best regards

How to properly setup an authentication using remote_login_passwordfile
I'm running Oracle9i for study purposes in a winXP OS
I set the value of the parameter remote_login_passwordfile to EXCLUSIVE
I tried connecting using the following credentials and it was, unexpectedly, successful:
connect scott/tiger as sysdba
how do I properly setup the authentication?
thanksYou need to look into two things
1.connecting directly from the server
2.Connecting from the remote
1.If you are connecting local with the server and if the SQLNET.ora has an entry like SQLNET_AUTHENTICATION_SERVICEs=(NTS) the your OS autntication will take precedence
But when you connect from the client machine
REMOTE_LOGIN_PASSWORD file takeover and you cannot log without a password that was gebnerated during the creation of password file.
If you strictly want passwordfiel authentcation set the SQLNET_AUTHENTICATION_SERVICE=NONE in the sqlnet.ora -
Hi,
Pls tell me the way by which i'll get output for ps -ef|grep pmon as i'm getting only..
# ps -ef|grep pmon
root 5137 5132 0 21:03:27 pts/4 0:00 grep pmon
even sid also set for this.. due to this i'm notable to create database. pls help..
see output for sid
# echo $ORACLE_SID
orclHi,
Are you trying to connect from the same machine in which the database is installed?? If not, have you checked the REMOTE_LOGIN_PASSWORD parameter at init.ora?? Which value does it have??
Are you connecting with or without a password?? If you don't enter a password Oracle will try to validate the user via OS and if the OS user is not a member of the group of the owner of the Oracle installation it will fail
If you are logging on the same machine where the instance is installed, set all the necessary enviroment variables and login indicating the correct password for the sys user, you could check sqlnet.ora as Pavan said...
Anyway, if you have Metalilnk access I suggest you to check Note: 233223.1 which is a troubleshooting guide for ORA-01031 error.

Sys account insufficient privilages
Hi
I am have a strange problem with oracle 10g r2.
when i connect to sys account using the following credentials it connects
conn sys/password as sysdba
but when i connect with follow it fails
conn sys/password@orcl as sysdba
ERROR:
ORA-01031: insufficient privileges
when is look at remote_login_password file its exclusive so no error
remote_login_passwordfile string EXCLUSIVE
please help me in this problem. this is a fresh installment on linux 4as
regards
NickJust to be even clearer...
Your password file was named orapworcl.
Your ORACLE_SID is evidently set to ORCL
On Windows, you'd have gotten away with it, because orcl is the same thing as ORCL. But on any other OS you care to mention these days, case sensitivity means ORCL<>orcl, and hence a SID of ORCL demands that your init.ora/spfile and your password file also contain within them the name ORCL, in upper case. -
Install webdb in 8i at solaris, pls help!!!!
This is the fifth time I failed in installing webdb in 8i at
solaris 2.7.
The problem is: when I go to the webdb home, I got an ora-06564
:object gateway.home does not exist.
I guess probably because I installed webdb in the ORACLE_HOME,
but the weird thing is: I can only install in the 8i's
ORACLE_HOME, other than that, the installer can't recognize the
sys password and refuse to let me proceed.
I am really wondering why the installer only recognize sys
password when I set the ORACLE_HOME to 8i's ORACLE_HOME? My
sqlplus works fine in any directories!
Experts, please help! Thank you very much. LIU

10g upgrade_ORA-01031: Insufficient privileges
Hi,
I am upgrating the database from 9.2.0.8 to 10.2 in solaris.
I created new 10g home and copied old parameter file, password file, sqlnet.ora file from old oracle home to new oracle home.(i.e 9i home to 10g home).
My remote_login_password is set to exclusive and sqlnet.ora file contain (TNSNAMES,ONAME,HOSTNAME).
i set oracle_home pointing to new 10g home and try to start the instance and getting below error.
SQL> conn sys/password@hostname as sysdba
Error:
ORA-01031: Instufficient privileges
Is this problem with sqlnet.ora file ? do i have to set the value to (NTS) or (NONE)?
tnsping and listner are up and working fine.
Any one help is appreciate;
Thanks. On Unix like environments don't set the authentication services, the default behavior is to authenticate a dba user as sysdba with the database privileged group declared at install time, regularly the dba group. If this user belongs to this group and the ORACLE_SID environment variable is declared and pointing to your instance then the user will connect.

Changing internal password by using orapwd can not remove default password "oracle". It is possible to logon to the database through SQLPlus by internal/oracle. Or connect to database through svrmgrl without password. Anyone can help on how to limit access on database through internal. Thanks
William1.orapwd file='/orant/database/oratest.pwd' password="password".
2.in the init.ora file change the remote_login_password=exclusive.
3.shutdown the database
4.startup the database.
when you connect to the svrmgrl, it will ask you the password.
