Remove spaces and special characters from a form field

Hi,
I am tragically new to all of this, but am trying to create a form in Adobe Acrobat 9.  I am trying to use a Custom Format script to take inputs in a form field and automatically remove spaces and special characters (hyphens specifically).  For example, if a user inputs "RAN-99 06" I would like it to change to "RAN9906."  I found this script that will not let users input special characters
if (!event.willCommit) {
    event.change = event.change.replace(/[\$#~%\*\*\^\-\(\)\+=\[\]\{\};\"\<\>\?\|\\\!]/g, "");
And that's okay, but I can't figure out how to disallow spaces.  Also, the perference would be for a script to allow users to input the data as they like, but to clean it up after they leave the text field.
Thanks in advance!

From the description, I assume that the script is currently in the Keystroke event. In fact, that would be a most logical way to have it; simply ignore anything unwanted when entered.
If you want to allow the user to enter anything, but "clean it up" when done, you would place your code in the Validate event. You will have to adjust your Regular Expression so that it works globally, but that's the whole difference. This will change the value.
Note that you can also enter the code into the Format event. However, that would only change the visual representation of the value, but internally, the value would remain as entered.
Hope this can help.
Max Wyss.

  • Is it possible to search for strings containing spaces and special characters?

    In our RoboHelp project, there are figures with text labels such as Figure 1, Figure 3-2, etc.
    When I search for "Figure 3" I get all pages containing "Figure" and "3", even if I surround it in quotes.  Similarly, searching for "3-2" treats the '-' character as a space and searches for all pages containing '3' or '2'.
    Is there a way to search for strings containing spaces and special characters?

    In that case I think the answer is no if you are using the standard search engine. However I believe that Zoom Search does allow this type of searching. Check out this link for further information.

  • Remove special characters from incoming data

    Hi Varun, You could use either of below.. REG_REPLACE(YOUR_INPUT_STR,^[A-Za-z0-9 ],NULL)  -- Replaces all non-alphanumeric with null
       REG_EXTRACT(YOUR_INPUT_STR,[A-Za-z0-9 ]) -- Extracts only alphanumeric data -Rajani

    i have special character coming in the source data and i want to remove it before loading into target, currently i am getting one special character , it may come as some other type of special character  other than alpha numeric. so how to remove those special characters from data and load the alphanumeric data into target.

  • I have a MacBook purchased in 2009 with Snow Leopard. I tried to access "special characters" from the Finder menu and an intermittent blank pop ups and will not stop. It also happens when I run Word or Pages.

    The blank pop up began as I tried to access "special characters" from the finder menu. I restarted, turned off and restarted and it did not work. It interferes with any application because I cannot work fast. Every new step takes a few seconds longer such as saving, finding text, check spelling and many more. I am desperate to solve this. Thanks in advance for any help given.

    Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
    This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

  • Remove all the special characters using java.util.regex

    Hi,
    How to remove the all the special characters in a String[] using regex, i have the following:-
    public class RegExpTest {
         private static String removeSplCharactersForNumber(String[] number) {
              String number= null;
              Matcher m = null;
                   Pattern p = Pattern.compile("\\!\\@\\#\\$\\%\\^\\&\\*\\(\\)\\_\\+\\-\\{\\}\\|\\;\\\\\\'////\\,\\.\\?\\<\\>\\[\\]");
                   for (int i = 0; i < number.length; i++) {
                   m = p.matcher(number);
                   if (m.find()) {
                        number= m.replaceAll("");
                   System.out.println("Final Number is:::"+number);
                   return number;
              public static void main(String args[]){
                   String[] str = {"raghav!@#$%^&*()_+"};
                   RegExpTest regExpTest = new RegExpTest();
                   regExpTest.removeSplCharactersForNumber(str);
    This code is not working and m.find() is "false", here i want the output to be raghav for the entered string array, not only that it should remove all the special characters for a entered string[]. Is there a simple way to do this to remove all the special characters for a given string[]? More importantly the "spaces" (treated as a spl. character), should be removed as well. Please do provide a solution to this.
    Thanks

    You don't need the find(). Just use the replaceAll() on each element of the String[] i.e.
    String[] values = ...
    for (int i = 0; i < values.length; i++)
        values[i] = p.matcher(values).replaceAll("");
    }I can't understand your regex since the forum software has mangled it but you just need to add a space to the set of chars to remove. When you post code, surround it with CODE tags then the forum software won't mangle it.

  • Edit menu and special characters

    With Maverick the iWorks apps were upgraded. I noticed that in iNumbers going to the edit menu and pulling up special characters draws a blank.
    In iPages and iText all works as expected (I have not tried Keynote), the favorite characters window appears at the cursor position.
    A general work around is to use the 'Show Character Viewer' from the top menu bar.
    I wonder, is that a feature of iNumbers'09 version 2.3 (554), or is there a hanging cache file, which should be deleted.
    Thanks
    Gerfried

    Thanks, I tried more and here is what I found.
    opening a Numbers file, selecting a field without seeing an input cursor and selecting special characters from the edit menu or keyboard shortcut, nothing happens. The special character window does not show, but the system thinks the window is there (the keyboard viewer is set to 'Hide Character Viewer'). In this situation, even with an input field having a cursor the popup window of the favorite characters will not show when requested.
    After clicking in the keyboard viewer 'Hide Character Viewer', it works fine: at the input cursor the popup window
    comes up.
    At two different Macs this behavior is reproducible.
    The special characters pane is not showing up if in a selected field the cursor is not set! That confused me.
    Only once and I could not reproduce it, the whole special character pane came up when clicking the edit -> menu -> special Characters.

  • How do I remove locations and/or pins from maps on iphone 5

    How can I remove locations and/or pins from MAPS?

    A purple pin is a dropped pin. You access that from the "back" of the map, but touching the lower right corner of the map. It is a pin that is dropped in the center of the map you happen to be looking at at the time. If there is no description of the pin, touch the pin and it should show a label, and on the right side of the label there is a blue arrowhead. Touch that and it will provide an address/description of the pin's location and there should be other options, such as directions to here, from here, etc., and then one to remove the pin. Touch that and it should disappear.

    For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
    The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
    Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
