Removed SQL 2012 AV group leaves phantom processes consuming large amounts of resource

Hi,
I have been experiencing performance degradation on some production servers that previously were part of a SQL 2012 High availability Group.
I recently used a small window of opportunity to test the HADRON groups on some of my SQL Servers. Unusually because of the licencing and hardware high spec, identically setup servers required I had to take some of our servers out of the web production
pool during a quiet period and use these for testing.
When the testing concluded, I removed all the HA SQL groups disabled, then removed the windows cluster and removed the cluster Feature from both of the servers and rebooted, but I see the following phantom queries.
() select table_id, item_guid, oplsn_fseqno, oplsn_bOffset, oplsn_slotid
from [<dbname>].[sys].[filetable_updates_2105058535] with (readpast)
order by table_id
A reboot resolved the issue initially and although unhappy without knowing the root cause I decided not to spend any further time investigating as believed it was resolved. But I noticed a major hit on performance on those specific server again after 2-3
weeks and the queries have returned, if this happens during peak period I will be short of capacity and unable to reboot.
How can I completely remove trace of this as these are obviously protected system tables?.... there are still the odd days when I wished I was still allowed to meddle in those system tables :)

I'd guess that it is enabled in the process somewhere then, because we have never used the filetable feature, only AlwaysON.
The query detailed above runs for each user database - soaking up CPU i.e. at a fairly quite period this servers CPU is running at almost double another identical spec server in its pool on our website.
Looking the procedure cache, historically it if you combined the separate plans it spends
90% of CPU on these queries.

  • OIM 10g : SQL Script to Delete or Cancel process instance tasks for user resources

    Hello,
    I have users with a resource with a process instance that have a large number (1000) of task instance related to reconciliations (Reconciliation Update Received).
    And when trying to revoke this resource, OIM take a long time to perfom this job, it is due to the fact that all this taks are canceled one by one...
    My question is : I want to perform manualy using a script this cancel of all this tasks, or maybe better, delete all this tasks when there'are too many, can someone provide me this sql scripts.
    Thanks in advance.

    I'm running this script into an adapter with the following code :
    public boolean clearTaskInstances(String user_key, String process_name, String task_name) throws OIMException {
      $logger.debug("Utils.clearTaskInstances() : Inside deleting task instances debug 1");
      tcDataProvider provider = getOIMConnection().getDataBase();
      $logger.debug("Utils.clearTaskInstances() : Inside deleting task instances debug 2");
    String query = "DELETE FROM OSI WHERE OSI.MIL_KEY=" +
      "(SELECT MIL.MIL_KEY FROM MIL WHERE MIL.TOS_KEY=" +
      "(SELECT TOS_KEY FROM TOS LEFT JOIN PKG ON PKG.PKG_KEY=TOS.PKG_KEY WHERE PKG.PKG_NAME=" +
      "'" + process_name + "') AND MIL.MIL_NAME='" + task_name + "'" +
      "AND OSI.ORC_KEY IN (SELECT ORC.ORC_KEY FROM ORC WHERE ORC.USR_KEY='" + user_key +"'))";
      $logger.debug("Utils/clearTaskInstance : Delete Query = " + query);
      PreparedStatementUtil preparedStatement = new PreparedStatementUtil();
       preparedStatement.setStatement(provider, query);
       try {
       preparedStatement.executeUpdate();
      $logger.debug("Utils/clearTaskInstance : Delete Query executed");
      return true;
      } catch (Exception e) {
      $logger.error("Utils/clearTaskInstance : Error while executing Delete Query : " + e);
      return false;
    , but this generate 18M of SQL error logs !!
    The same SQL request in SQL Dev works fine, the same code with OIM 11gR2 works fine too, the problem seems to be only with OIM 9.1.
    The first lines in the logs are :

  • How do I remove spaces or special characters within a cell for large amounts of data

    Is there any shortcut to remove spaces between words and numbers within a cell?
    Example:
    Current: .5 lt PET (6)
    Need: .5ltPET(6)
    Is there any shortcut to remove special characters between numbers within a cell?
    Example:
    Current: 0--000--000--0
    Need: 00000000

    Thanks Wayne.
    I have been away from using Numbers or Excel for 4-5 years so it is slowly coming back to me. I am get that I need to use the SUBSTITUTE function however I am having trouble with getting it to work.

  • CLOB processing consuming large memory in temp tablespace

    We are having a stored procedure, which is called from a Java process to enqeue a message in to AQ. The input for the procedure is CLOB.
    In some installations where oracle standard editions is used, the temp tablespace is growing in large volumes and the only process accessing the temp tablespace is the procedure. Oracle version is 9i 9.2.0.5.0
    We are doing a trim on the clob variable inside the procedure. Will that cause any issues like this ?
    Procedure is as below
    procedure enq_msg
    (queue_name varchar2, msg_text in clob,p_result out number) as
    queue_options DBMS_AQ.ENQUEUE_OPTIONS_T;
    message_properties DBMS_AQ.MESSAGE_PROPERTIES_T;
    message_id RAW(16);
    v_msg_text               clob default msg_text;
    v_queue_name          varchar2(40) deafult queue_name;
    BEGIN
    v_msg_text := trim(v_msg_text);
    v_queue_name := queue_name;
    DBMS_AQ.ENQUEUE(queue_name => v_queue_name,
                             enqueue_options => queue_options,
                             message_properties => message_properties,
                             payload => v_msg_text,
                             msgid => message_id
         commit;
         p_result := 0;
    exception
    when no_data_found then
    p_result := 1;
         rollback;
    when others then
         rollback;
    p_result := sqlcode;
    END enq_msg;

    Is there a reason you have v_msg_text and v_queue_name defined? You can use queue_name directly in the call to dbms_aq.enqueue and also payload => trim(msg_text)
    This would eliminate the copying of the clob that is currently occurring and may help your space issue.
    Is trim really needed?
    I'm not familiar with any CLOB related bugs in 9i but the above is just some things I would try or question.

  • SCCM 2007 database move from SQL 2008 to SQL 2012 SP1

    Hi,
    today we tried with moving the sccm DB from our SQL 2008 to SQL 2012. The whole DB process was a success but what bugs me is the reporting services which we also have.
    Does the reporting service make automatic transition to the box or do i have to configure separately if yes how?
    Also how do we retire the DB on the old server?
    Thank you,

    This would be manual process. The simplest way to fix them is to reinstall the reporting point.

  • SQL 2012 AlwaysOn AG with 3 Nodes

    First, what would be the best option of quorum/quorum witness for my SQL 2012 AlwaysOn group?
    I have setup the following:
    SQL 2012 AlwaysOn with 3 nodes.
    1 primary
    2 secondaries - one of them is read-only (for reporting and backup)
    Dynamics CRM and Reporting DBs are running on them.
    How can I achieve the highest avalability and DR with my SQL? Do I even need to create the quorum witness? What kind of Quorum (majority nod with network share?)
    Second, Is it good idea to run the backup on that read-only node?  If I setup the maintenance plan on this 3rd read-only mode with full and transactional backups, I should be able to restore without any issues?
    Third, I have another DB (SharePoint) that needs to be moved over to this SQL AlwaysOn AG but wondering if I can restore it in the secondary node to utilize the unused resources.  Is that possible or not recommended?

    Are the replicas on the same network subnet? If they are, then, you already have a quorum with node majority (odd number of votes.) Since you are already paying for an additional license to run read-only workloads on your readable secondary, you can take
    backups on this replica. Full database backups are in COPY_ONLY mode but you can take regular log backups which will truncate the log on the primary replica. In theory, you will be able to restore the backups taken from your readable secondary but you should
    test (hence, why I mentioned "in theory.") I wouldn't move my SharePoint databases to this SQL Server Availability Group mainly because of the different requirements between the two - SharePoint and Dynamics CRM. MAXDOP =1, disabling index maintenance and
    statistics updates on SharePoint databases, etc. are just a few of them. Besides, I doubt that the recovery objectives and service level agreements between those two applications are the same within your organization.

    Hello I was wondering if anyone could tell me to remove a node from an AOG group in SQL 2012.  We currently have a two node Always on availability group and I need to replace one of the servers.  My plan is to bring the
    new server on to the group then remove the old server and I am having issues finding documentation on this.  Could someone explain how to do this or if it is even possible.
    Thanks

    After the new server is added to the cluster and the AG, remove the old one by first
    ALTER AVAILABILITY GROUP [YourAG]
    REMOVE REPLICA ON N'OldServer';
    Remove a Secondary Replica from an Availability Group
    Then evict the old server from the cluster with the cluster administrator or
    Remove-ClusterNode OldServer
    Remember to verify the quorum configuration after adding the new server and removing the old server.

  • A few SQL related protection group Questions - DPM 2012 R2

    Hi - Here is my environment: DPM 2012 R2 backing up SQL 2012 DBs. Some of the DBs are simple recovery model, some are full recovery model in the same protection group.
    1) Regarding the fact that DPM only looks to the recovery model when the DB is first added to the protection group, if I ever changed the recovery model in the future, would stepping through the "Modify Protection Group" wizard without changing
    anything be the solution for DPM not changing its methodology on the backing up or not backing up the log files? Or would I have to remove the affected databases from the protection group and add them back in?
    2) I have disk protection configured for 30 Days, sync every 15 minutes, and application recovery points once per day. Online protection is configured for 90 Days. Does this mean my disk consumption on the DPM side for full model databases will be the full
    size of the databases, plus the amount of changes observed over 30 days? OR does it mean it will keep 30 full copies of the DB? I am fairly sure the former.
    3) If I do decide to reduce the retention range on the disk side of this protection group to say 14 days, are there any specific issues with changing that after the PG has been working for some time?
    4) My former backup solution had an option to run consistency checks after every SQL job. Is that still considered best practice? Would the "Run a daily consistency check" be a better choice than the "Only run if a replica becomes inconsistent"
    option that I currently have in place? Would there be any ramifications to enabling this now after this PG has been in place for some time?
    Thanks very much!

    Hi
    Q1) Regarding the fact that DPM only looks to the recovery model when the DB is first added to the protection group, if I ever changed the recovery model in the future, would stepping through the "Modify Protection Group" wizard without changing
    anything be the solution for DPM not changing its methodology on the backing up or not backing up the log files? Or would I have to remove the affected databases from the protection group and add them back in?
    A1)
    Changing the Recovery Model of a Database
    To change the recovery model of a protected database to the simple recovery model
    Stop protection of the database, selecting the retain replica option.
    Change the recovery model on the SQL Server database.
    Add the database to a protection group.
    Q2) I have disk protection configured for 30 Days, sync every 15 minutes, and application recovery points once per day. Online protection is configured for 90 Days. Does this mean my disk consumption on the DPM side for full model databases will be the full
    size of the databases, plus the amount of changes observed over 30 days? OR does it mean it will keep 30 full copies of the DB? I am fairly sure the former.
    A2) Your disk consumption on the DPM will be for size of model databases plus the amount of changes observed over 30 days.
    Q3) If I do decide to reduce the retention range on the disk side of this protection group to say 14 days, are there any specific issues with changing that after the PG has been working for some time?
    A4) Not really, but to gain back the potential extra space allocated for the original 30 day retention - you can try shrinking the recovery point volume once the retention range is reduced and the older recovery points are pruned.  I would wait until
    after midnight to be sure the old RP's are deleted, then try to shrink.
    Q4) My former backup solution had an option to run consistency checks after every SQL job. Is that still considered best practice? Would the "Run a daily consistency check" be a better choice than the "Only run if a replica becomes inconsistent"
    option that I currently have in place? Would there be any ramifications to enabling this now after this PG has been in place for some time?
    A4)  A consistency check will only run if DPM detects the replica is inconsistent.  Even if you have the option selected to run nightly, if the replica is already consistent a consistency check will be skipped.

  • Unable to remove TempDB files SQL 2012

    Hi Experts,
    We have a problem with removing the extra created TempDB files on de SQL 2012 server. We tried several things:
    Restart services;
    Rename *.ndb files
    We use the following query in the SQL management studio:
    USE tempdb;
    GO
    DBCC SHRINKFILE('tempdev4', EMPTYFILE)
    GO
    USE master;
    GO
    ALTER DATABASE tempdb
    REMOVE FILE tempdev4;
    The error returned is:
    DBCC SHRINKFILE: Page 5:40 could not be moved because it is a work table page.
    Msg 2555, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
    Cannot move all contents of file "tempdev4" to other places to complete the emptyfile operation.
    DBCC execution completed. If DBCC printed error messages, contact your system administrator.
    Msg 5042, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
    The file 'tempdev4' cannot be removed because it is not empty.
    It looks like the TempDB is still in use. If the services are stopped and the query is fired right after starting we receive the same error. Any suggestions are welcome.
    Regards,

    I would try to restart SQL Server in single-user mode, add -m to the startup options in the SQL Server Configuration Manager. You may still fail to remove the file if there is a process which eagerly connects directly and start to do work.

  • Orchestrator 2012 R2 on SQL 2012 SP1 Availability Group

    Hi all,
    I've recently setup a new install of SCOrch 2012 R2 on a SQL 2012 SP1 Availability Group.  Everything went smooth and appears to be functioning correctly up until a failover occurs (manual or automatic).  Once there is a failover between database
    nodes, the Orchestrator servers (Mgmt and Runbook) lose connectivity to the database and will not reconnect until the services are restarted and then they work again.
    Has anyone setup Orchestrator on an Availability Group and are you seeing similar issues from a failover?
    Thanks!
    Jon

    Hi Jon,
    has each member of the availability group the same master key to read encrypted data like passwords and the license code?

  • Upgrade Process from SQL 2005 to SQL 2012

    Hi All,
    I have gone thru multiple threads and would like to understand some steps in detail for me to upgrade SQL 2005 to SQL 2012.
    Below is my understanding and questions around it, I would be setting up a new environment with OS 2007/2008 with SQL 2012:
    Environment Readiness - Ensure new environment is ready with Win 2007/2008 with SQL 2012 Server
    Run Upgrade Advisor on the new environment and point to SQL 2005 instance
    Find the breaking/discontinued changes to be done before or After Upgrade
    <Question>: Over here I would like to know what should be our approach to make the required changes
    <Question>: Obviously I should not be making changes directly on the Production SQL 2005 server, then in that case should I take a backup/restore on the new SQL Server 2012 and then make the required changes to the database objects
    like (Table schema(changing column names/datatypes etc.), Stored Procedure, Functions & Views)
    <Question>: When I do a backup/restore I would also get the data along with it, so is this a recommended approach or should we only run/use the table schema creation scripts, fix the issues identified by UA and then do an Table to Table import,
    any thoughts on this ?
    <Question>: If I have to do a table to table Import then I should ensure there's a downtime during the Import or would I have any other better approach
    So, basically my questions are around the approach of fixing the issues identified by UA and moving the database to SQL Server 2012 environment, I have around 300 databased to me upgraded.
    Please do let me know what should be a good/proven approach ? Pl. do let me know if you would need any more details from me.
    ---Umesh

    Thanks all for the replies.
    I am trying summarize what I have understood here:
    Document SQL Server 2005 environment details, Is there any tool which could give us all relevant details
    I would take the backup from the SQL Server 2005 Production environment and then restore the same in a test environment which again has SQL Server 2005 and Run Upgrade Advisor on that
    Probbaly run SQL Profiler as well to find out the deprecated changes to be done
    I should fix all the breaking, discontinued changes on the Test system identified by UA
    I should fix all the deprecated changes on the Test system identified by SQL Profiler
    Steps 3 & 4 should give me the changed scripts for all database objects (i.e. Table Schema, Stored Procedures, Functions & Views)
    <Question> Perform test, I understand this acitivity test can be captured by having SQL profiler running in the background on the SQL Server 2005 production environment where we can identify some days in a week or a month where maximum activity is
    expected to ensure we cover most the scenarios, let me know is this approach looks fine or is there a better approach
    Now, with regards to acutal upgrade I need to identify a time window where in less activity is done during which I could have a downtime for the actual SQL Server 2005 production environment
    Post downtine, I should do a BackUp for all databases from SQL Server 2005 production environment
    Test on environment readiness of SQL Server 2012 can be compared against the documentation done as part of the first Step
    <Question> Ideally I should a restore first in the new environment which has SQL Server 2012
    <Question> Then run the Scripted changes where we fixed all the breaking, discontinued & deprecated changes
    <Question> Does above sequence of Step 9 & 10 make sense or is there a better approach of doing it
    <Question> Post Upgrade and running of changed scripts, I should run the Upgrade Advisor again and see if everything looks fine
    <Question> Perform test again which we ran on SQL Server 2005 Test environment
    <Question> These steps should complete the Upgrade process.
    Please do let me know if the above sequence look ok to all of you and does it really work in a practical scenario, do let me know your feedback or any change in sequence/process or any other tools that can be used here.
    Thanks Again ...

  • SQL Server 2012 availability groups

    Hi, I'm new to SQL 2012 and availability groups. We have it setup for SharePoint 2013 for an Intranet and all is well. I migrated some ASP.NET applications from SQL 2005 and created a new group for them. It all seemed fine and was sync'd up ok but lately
    I'm having to manually resume the data movement via Management Studio. The databases seem to be in a paused state although the database is up as far as the applications are concerned.
    Should I have completed some kind of database upgrade prior to moving over to 2012? Is there anything I can do or check? Is there a way of automating the resume data movement rather than me manually doing this?
    Thanks!

    Suspending and resuming an AlwaysOn secondary database does not directly affect the availability of the primary database. However, suspending a secondary database can impact redundancy and failover capabilities for the primary database, until the suspended
    secondary database is resumed. This is in contrast to database mirroring, where the mirroring state is suspended on both the mirror database and the principal database until mirroring is resumed. Suspending an AlwaysOn primary database suspends data movement
    on all the corresponding secondary databases, and redundancy and failover capabilities cease for that database until the primary database is resumed.
    You can obviously automate this: all you need to do is check if the status is suspended and then resume with the help of T-SQL command - how about writing a job which checks it every 5 min to 30 mins. depending upon your requirement and execute the T-SQL
    command to fix it.
    The Command would be:
    ALTER DATABASE database_name SET HADR RESUME

  • SQL 2012 Database Availability Group - Force Automatic Failover

    Hi All,
    I'd appreciate some help in understanding the following scenario in my test environment.
    I have created a DAG with 2 replica servers (both of which are HyperV VM's running W2012 Std).
    From a client PC in my test lab, I can connect to the virtual listener of my DAG and confirm via the "select @@servername" command that I am connecting to the primary replica server.
    Using the Failover Wizard, I can easily move to primary instance between my 2 nodes and the command above confirms that the primary replica server has changed. So far so good.
    What I wanted to test, was what would happen to my DAG in the event of a complete loss of power to the server that was acting as the primary replica server. At first, I thought I would stop the SQL Server service on the primary server, but this did not result
    in my DAG failing over to the secondary replica. I have found out that the only way I can do this is by effectively shutting down the primary server in a controlled manner.
    Is there any reason why either stopping the SQL Server service on the primary replica, or indeed forcing a power off of the primary replica does not result in the DAG failing over to the secondary replica?
    Thanks,
    Bob

    Hi,
    I would verify if Database Availability Group means AlwaysOn Availability Group.
    How did you set the FailureConditionLevel?
    Whether the diagnostic data and health information returned by sp_server_diagnostics warrants an automatic failover depends on the failure-condition level of the availability group. The failure-condition level specifies what failure conditions
    trigger an automatic failover. There are five failure-condition levels, which range from the least restrictive (level one) to the most restrictive (level five). For details about failure-conditions level, see:

    Hi,
    Thanks for the reply.
    It's an AlwaysOn Availability Group.
    In my test lab, I have changed the quorum configuration to a file share witness and that has allowed an automatic failover when I turn the primary replica server off (rather than power it off).
    I'll take a look at the links you provided.

  • How can you change data on a SQL 2012 application database that uses availability groups from BizTalk server?

    If you use the WCF-SQL adapter it is recommend that you set UseAmbientTransaction to true if you are changing data. I think this requires MSDTC to be enabled on the SQL server that you are changing the data on. (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd787981.aspx)
    I think that Availability groups does not support MSDTC. (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms366279.aspx).

    Hi,
    Yes, Availability groups doesn't support MSDTC. Please refer to the similar discusison which maybe helpfull:
