Renaming Measures or columns in painstakingly slow

Hi,
I am creating a SSAS Tabular model cube. I have managed to create many measures, but the amount of time it takes to sync the metadata to the work space db is annoyingly increasing. any tips on how to fix this?
Regards,
Sachin

Hi
Renaming a column is not supported in 8i.
Chris
PS: the syntax is "ALTER TABLE <table name> RENAME COLUMN <old column name> TO <new column name>"

  • Drill function implemented on Measure object column in the webi report

    Post Author: madan kumar
    CA Forum: WebIntelligence Reporting
    Hi,
I have a small issue in my project.(Maintenance Project)I created a measure object in the fact table of the existing universe and saved and exported to the repository. (Say Measure object is D where D = A-(B+C))I inserted the same object as a column between two measure objects columns of a existing WebI report.
The report has two hierarchies involved  - each hierarchy has dimension objects involved.I have checked with the hierarchies to make sure that measure object is not involved. The scope of analysis is None for the query.Version is BO XI R2.
The issue is the Drill function is implemented on that particular new column. The drill function should be applicable only to the two dimension objects involved in the report. But this measure object column is also getting drilled once the Drill option is selected.I had to remove the drill optiion from the Measure object column.
Can anyone help me on this issue...
    Thanks in advance...

Thanks for your reply. I did the date diff on the columns. It does not  break into 3 different groups. I am using a function called previous on the date column. So the report is like this
DATE                           Pervious (DATE)                 Date - Pervious(DATE)
    01-01-2008 01:06              Null
    01-01-2008 01:12              01-01-2008 01:06               :06
    01-01-2008 01:18              01-01-2008 01:12               :06
    01-01-2008 01:24              01-01-2008 01:18               :06
    01-01-2008 01:30             01-01-2008 01:24              :06
    01-01-2008 01:36             01-01-2008 01:30               :06
Basically we are breaking on the Date - Previous ( Date) column which does not work. I am not sure if there is a way to break this. I even tried it in Crystal REports XI and it does not work their either. Any help with this issue with be greatly appriciated.

  • Rename of table column messed up field in Edit Screen

I renamed a table column. I have a report page with an edit form page tied to it based on this table. I changed the SQL statement in the Region Source on the report. The appropriate column value is displayed in the report. I changed the Page Item name on the Edit Form page. I changed the Source Value to match the new field name.
The problem I am running into is when I run the Edit Form page and change the value in the item of the renamed column, the field in the database table is blanked out. Even if I change the value to be the same value, the column is blanked out.
What did I miss in renaming the table column?

I've had a similar problem. I added a couple of new columns to a table and attempted to manually add the fields to an existing form. However, as described above, whatever value was entered on the screen, a NULL was stored on the database.
I created a new form using the Form Wizard and copied the columns between pages and got them working. In the process, I tracked the problem down to the variable name.
For example: for the column PRC_SCHEDULABLE, a item named P5_SCHEDULABLE works but any other item name produces the NULL problem.

  • BLOB column inserts are slow

    Hi All,
Have a table with 7 columns where 4 columns are of Varchar2 type, 2 columns are of NUMBER type and 1 column is of type BLOB.
Myself inserting the values to the table from JAVA program. Insertion to VARCHAR2 and NUMBER type columns are very much fast. But insertion to BLOB column is dead slow(data to BLOB column values are about 10KB).
Please help me in this regard to insert BLOB values fastly.

As I have already explained, there are a number of layers from client to server - and any, or all of these, could be contributing to the problem.
Use your web browser and look up what instrumentation is. Apply it. Instrument your code. On the client. On the server. So you have evidence (call stats and metrics) to use to determine what and where the performance problem is. And not have to guess - and like most developers point your finger at the database in the false belief that your client code, client design, and client usage of the database, are all perfect.

  • Column missing in measure group columns list for dimension usage

I added some new columns (dimension ids) to my fact table and refreshed the data source view. Now the new columns show up in the data source view for this fact table. But when I go to dimension usage to tie the new dimensions to this measure, I am not able
to find the columns just added in the measure group columns list.
What do I have to do to be able to see my new columns in this list so that I can update dimension usage.
    Thanks.

    Hi kvd123,
According to your description, you add columns in fact table and the data source view is already refreshed. However, in dimension usage the meta data is not refreshed. Right?
In this scenario, I suggest you redeploy your cube. Because in Analysis Services, when we modify the cube, the changes are recorded in xxxxx.cube XML file. After you redeploy the cube, those changes are copied to Analysis Services server. Then
the source data will reload into the measure groups.

  • Moving table columns is very slow

In my application moving table columns is very slow, with the rendering of table cells dragging behind the rendering of the table cell (using Java 1.5). I use a custom table cell renderer that subclasses a JPanel and contains a JTextField.
I checked I was overriding all the methods that DefaultTableCellRenderer does for performance reasons and found I wasnt overiding validate() and invalidate(), over-riding these the table column performance is now ok, but the cells are now not rendered correctly.
I also put a System.out.println into getTableRendererComponent() and found that even if I only move a column slightly the getTableRendererComponent() is called for every cell displayed rather than just the cells within the column moved/columns either side of it which is what i expect.
Any ideas what i should do. My own vague idea is to put some code into validate() and invalidate() to only call super implemntaions when really need to, but dont know how to work this out.

Hi, thanks for your help - ive created a full test case, code below. I have reworked the code so I dont need to do a removeAll() but the issues remaining are:
    1. If I override validate() with an empty method nothing is displayed in the grid
    2. The renderer is alot slower than the using default renderer even though ive removed stuff like borders.
The code below has validate without the empty method.
(My real renderer is a bit more complicated, and I do require to use a JPanel)

  • BIDS 2008 - Dimension Usage new relationship Measure Group Column list empty?

Ive been updating my underlying schema, and DSV and now Im having to update some of the Dimensions.  Looks like things got a bit "sideways" somewhere along the way.  Now that Im going back to reassign dimensions being used within the
Dimension Usage tab of the Cube, the measure group column list is empty when I go to create a new relationship (regular type)

    Hi shiftbit,
According to your description, you get an empty Measure Group Columns list when defining relationship. Right?
Based on your screenshot, you may notice that Measure group table is empty, so definitely it can't show any column in the dropdown list. If there's columns in the measure group that are related to the dimension columns, at least it will show the fact
    table for Measure group.
In this scenario, please check if the fact table for the Measure group is existing. Re-process the Measure group and try again. If the issue persists, please re-create that measure group.

  • Muse 2014.2 is painstakingly slow to operate

Muse 2014.2 is painstakingly slow to operate! Opening sites takes more time than ever before using a Wacom tablet, sometimes 10 to 15 clicks before the site decides to open. And especially after leaving Muse - going to Illustrator or Photoshop and coming back - I have to wait a loooong time for Muse to “WAKE UP”!

    Hi Gaurav,
I'm on a Windows 7/64/Intel core i7/16 RAM. The beta version was fine. It was when updating Muse in the shipped CC version the speed just plummeted to an almost halt. After some Win updates the speed has since improved, though it still doesn’t feel quit as snappy as it used to be. Clicking 3, 4 or more times for subpages to open is still an issue (With a digitizer on a Wacom tablet). My thought is that maybe it’s my Win 7 setup that causes the problem – surly the Muse team at some point has to let go of older configurations?
Fact is, that ID, PS and AI runs just perfect and smooth. Maybe I should not use this as a benchmark as Muse need Internet speed as well, but maybe this could be another source of the slow down - though I’m not sure how much this matters??

  • EVS - renaming the first column

    Hi everyone,
I've done an EVS. It works good.
I do not success renaming the first column which has the name "key".
    If I write :
    ISimpleTypeModifiable myType = wdThis.wdGetAPI().getContext().getModifiableTypeOf("CompanyCodeContext");
    IModifiableSimpleValueSet values=myType.getSVServices().getModifiableSimpleValueSet();
    myType.setFieldLabel("Company Name");
This code will rename the decription column but not the key column.
Is it possible to rename the key column ?
    Thanks for the help.

    Hi David,
The answer is "no": this value is static rather then based on type info.
On other hand, there is even a WD bug with second column name: actually it should be columnLabel (and it does not work) rather then fieldLabel.

  • How to improve slow PowerPivot performance when adding/modifying measures, calculated columns or Relationships?

I have been using PowerPivot for a couple of months now and whilst it is extremely quick when pulling in data to populate Pivot Tables, it is extremely slow to make the following kind of changes to the Data Model:
    - Add a Measure / Calculated Field
    - Add a Calculated Column
    - Rename a Calculated Field
    - Re-name a Calculated Column
    - Modify a relationship
    - Change a tables properties
    - Update a table
In the status bar of excel I get a very quick 'calculating', then it spends a lot of time 'reading data',
then it 'finalises' after which nothing is in the status bar but it still takes approx. 45 seconds before the program becomes responsive again. This waiting time does not change depending on the action, it is the same if I rename a
column as it is if I add a new measure.
My question is what affects performance of these actions and how do I improve it?
To give you an idea of where my data comes from, I have:
    - 7 tables that feed into the Data Model directly from within the workbook which contains the data model itself. These are a combination of static tables and tables that connect to a MySQL database.
    - 6 separate workbooks which contain static data that is updated manually periodically (copied and pasted from another source)
    - 5 separate workbooks which contain dynamic tables that are linked to our MySQL database and update when opened.
Now I realise that this is probably where my issue is, however I have no idea how to fix it. You do not seem to be able to connect to a MySQL database directly within the PowerPivot window itself so there is no way to generate and update tables without
first creating them either in a worksheet or separate workbook (as far as I know).  If I try to create all of the tables directly within the single workbook containing the Data Model I get performance and crashing issues hence why I separate tables into
    individual workbooks.
Any advice on how to improve performance would be tremendously appreciated. I'm new and keen to learn, I'm aware this set-up is far from best practice.
    Hardware wise I am using:
    - Windows 8 64-bit
    - Excel 2013 64-bit
    - Intel Core i7 processor
    - 6 GB Ram
    Thanks,
    James

    Darren,
I think the point I was making is its in memory, geez... BTW what do all applications do when they run out of paged memory,  if PowerPivot is using all available memory then wouldn't this force the other applications to use Virtual or essentially write
back and forth to the disks? I think Virtual memory white to disk ??, lol Also, there are parts if the architecture of Excel 2013 that when importing data into PowerPivot require memory and when working in SharePoint the PowerPivot data is cached to disk
unless recently refreshed... But this conversation isn't help the James who asked the question and as much as I would love to continue its become a little boring..
    Hi James,
If you download one the ODBC MySQL Connectors
http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/odbc/ and I believe yours is the first one for x64 systems and connect directly to the data you should be able to reduce the number of workbooks your opening and if you notice in the following graphic these
connection are automatically refreshed by default, the parts in red are the differences between PowerPivot 2010 and 2013
You should notice a lot of improvement especially when refreshing data please let us know how it goes...
    After registering the ODBC Driver
Click Add. on the User-DSN sheet, choose the “MySQL ODBC 5.x driver”, fill in the credentials, choose a database (from the select menu) and a data source name and you’re done.
Back in Excel you go on the PowerPivot section of the ribbon and open the PowerPivot window  (the green icon on the left side). In the ‘Home’ section of that window you will see a small gray cylindrical symbol (the international
symbol for “database”) which will suggest to you different data sources to choose from. Take the one where it says “ODBC”.
In the next dialog you click on create, choose the adapter, and then Ok. Back in the assistant you can check the connection and proceed.
Now you have the choice between importing the data from tables using the import assistant or Query depends on your skillset..
    Cheers,

Thank you for all your replies.
The pictures are all on the computer, not on a network.
I have turned off auto analyze.
The catalog has currently several thousand pictures (close to 10,000, if I remember correctly [currently not at my computer]). Does that qualify as 'large'?

  • SQL Developer 1.5.1 - Sorting Table / List of Columns - Why So Slow

    Hi All,
why is it so slow to sort the list of columns names in a table.
It appears to be going back and querying the database again. - shouldn't it just be doing a local sort of the JTable ?
    Thanks
    Bill
Edited by: wfs on Oct 28, 2008 2:31 PM

Yes, it does query again - as it does with everything else being sorted.
You're right they could implement local sorting on a little, complete set, but that should be requested at the announced SQL Developer Exchange, since I recon that would get pretty tedious (taking in count NLS sorting settings).
Then mind you have to query again anyway if a result set is not complete (by default, fetches are 50 records at a time), or fetch everything before being able to apply the local sort, which will give you even more problems on large tables.

    K.

  • Rename a table column

Can we rename a column in the database table? If, yes, then how?

In 9i you can rename the column directly:
    ALTER TABLE static
RENAME COLUMN oldname TO newname; In previous version it takes more effort:
CREATE TABLE temporary (newname, col2, col3)
        AS SELECT oldname, col2, col3 FROM static;
    DROP TABLE static;
RENAME temporary TO static; You would also have to care about constraints, indexes etc.
But you could use TOAD, which generate all the necessary statements.

  • Text query using a Multi Column datastore index slow

I have created a text index using multi column datastore preference. I have specified two clob columns in my preference. Searching on this new index works, but it is slower than I expected.
I have done the following comparison:
    My original two clob columns are: DocumentBody and DocumentFields. I have built an individual text index on each column. My new column with Multi Column index is DocumentBodyAndFields;
    I did two queries:
    1. search 'dog' on DocumentBody UNION search 'dog' on DocumentFields;
    2. search 'dog' on DocumentBodyAndFields;
I would think the second search should be faster than the first one because it is a single query. But this is not the case. The second query is consistently slower than the first query by about 10-20%.
Things are getting much worse when I search on preceding wildcards. If I search '%job', the multi column index is twice as slow as the first query! I am very confused by this result. Is this a bug?

I am unable to reproduce the performance problem. In my tests, the search that uses the multicolumn_datastore performs better, as demonstrated below. Can you provide a similar test case that shows the table structure, datastore, index creations, and explain plan?
