Renaming Oracle Tables in Production

If you need to rename Oracle tables in Production, then which process is most effective:
A.
LOCK TABLE xxx IN EXCLUSIVE MODE
RENAME xxxTO new_name;
Table renamed.
B. dbms_redefinition
C. other ...
THANK YOU !!

All we can say is that dmbs_redefinition is an option to consider. Only the OP knows his environment, what kind of window the work will have to be done in, and the timing issues between the renames and moving in new code. Such as in the case where you need the new object names in place to perform java compiles to move in new classes.
At my current job we would take a window and shut the database down, bring it up in restricted mode, perform the renames of the tables (and associated indexes for standard purposes), move the code into place, and then test. Full testing might require unrestricting the system or we might be able to just grant restricted session to a few users. Once we are satisified we would fire up our daemon processes and then release the batch schedule.

That's not an error, you can see errors within log and bad files.

  • Uploading data from a xlsx file into an Oracle table

    Hi All,
I want to know what would be the best approach and tool to upload the data from an xlsx (excel) sheet into an Oracle table.
    Can I use 'sqlldr'?

What if the excel sheet is exported from some other third party database and not explicitly generated on Windows? I know if we can export it to excel why can't we also export it to csv but what if that option is also not available.
Also what things do I need to take into account when I export a xlsx file to csv file. I mean I hope in no circumstances there would be a data loss. How about instead of of these "what ifs" and "I hopes" you tell us exactly what you have to work with and describe the real business problem. If you ask the wrong questions, you get the wrong answers.
You "hope" that there would be no data loss? Do you really think Excel would survive as a product, much less be the overwhelming dominant product of its type, if it screwed up something that fundamental? The only thing that will be lost is the formatting meta-data.

  • What are the restrictions &pitfalls of renaming a table vs select * into...

    Hello all,
I've got a situation coming up possibly, that I'm looking at where I may need to rename a table that has about 3 TB of data in it.
I'd looked at doing the oracle RENAME command, and it mentions that some restrictions that would error out would be:
views, synonyms, and stored procedures and functions that reference the table.
I'd been looking around on different sites researching more, and found some saying that tables with foreign keys, check constraints would also error out on this....but in the Oracle docs I see it saying:
"Oracle Database automatically transfers integrity constraints, indexes, and grants on the old object to the new object."
Were the other non-Oracle site references maybe to older versions? I'm using 11Gr2.
The other part of this is that the app designers really want to recreate the original table. Essentially this is doing
    TABLENAME1 -> TABLENAME1_OLD
Then recreating TABLENAME1 anew empty for new use.
My original thoughts were to do select * from TABLENAME1 into TABLENAME1_OLD, and then truncate TABLENAME1....but with the size of the data (and this will eventually be done in PROD), I"m trying to say that doing the RENAME and recreating the empty table would be less resource intensive.
Would the rename and recreate table be the way to go?
If so, then I need to make sure I know all the restrictions and pitfalls on rename would have....
    Thanks in advance!!

You are missing a key piece of the requirements
What is the intended use of the OLD and the NEW tables?
Why do you need a new table with exactly the same name unless you intend to use it exactly the same way you were using the old table? And if that is the case it seems to me that other tables with foreign keys need to be truncated also and point to the new table and not the old one.Unfortunately, I don't know. This is just a request the devs have, and I'm not sure of their reasoning, but this is what they're asking for, so, I'm trying to research the best way to do what they request.

  • How can I store the results of a report in an Oracle table ?

In OBIEE 11g, we need the records resulting from the execution of a report, to be stored in an Oracle table.
    Is this possible ?. Thanks.

GSR Hi, first of all thanks for your response.
What I'm wanting to do is not exactly what you're proposing.
What I want is that an end user can run a report and that the results be automatically stored in an Oracle table. Without manual intervention. Other BI products perform this action, and I need to do it with OBIEE. Thanks.

  • OBIEE 11g - Combine data from two Oracle tables

    Good day!
I tried to combine data from two Oracle tables as fact data, but it doesn't work.
My steps: I created SCOTT.EMP2 table from SCOTT.EMP table, update EMPNO and ENAME values of EMP2 table to distinguish data of my tables. Then I imported physical tables DEPT, EMP and EMP2 to BIEE 11g, created joins DEPT-EMP and DEPT-EMP2 in physical diagram. Then I dragged DEPT and EMP tables to BMM, and EMP2 table to EMP as second LTS. In Content tab for EMP and EMP2 I checked "This source should be combined with other sources at this level" checkboxes. Then I renamed logical tables EMP and DEPT to Employees and Departments and dragged them to Presentation area. In Answers I created Analysis with columns DNAME and ENAME.
The problem is that data on results tab is only from one physical table EMP or EMP2 (depending on the order of sources EMP and EMP2 of LT Employees) and not from both.
Can anybody help? Am I missed something?
    Al.

    Hi Al,
I think you have to define the content of the LTS.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E12096_01/books/admintool/admintool_BusModSetup16.html
You have to specify the content of the different fragments.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E12096_01/books/admintool/admintool_SetUpAggNav3.html#wp1005333
Maybe you have to add an additional column 'Source' ('EMP1', 'EMP2')

  • Upload content in xls file to oracle table

I am creating a HTMLDB report using a SQL query that refers to multiple tables.
The data is present in multiple xls file (which in turn are downloaded form a 3rd party tool), which I upload using the HTMLDB data load/unload option in Utilities and created tables and created a report querying these tables.
But since the data changes almost everyday, manual 'drop table' and 'upload data' from xls into tables using the option in Utilities is not feasible. One way of automating this would be to programmatically upload the data in the xls file into tables in Oracle database and created the HTMLDB report by querying the data in the tables in the Oracle database via database link from HTMLDB.
For this, I would like to know how to upload data in xls into tables in Oracle database. The 1st row of xls files consists of header data, which has to be converted to coulmns in the table.
Simply put, I think, I need the same feature as given by the HTMLDB 's data upload option in Utilities.
Does any one know how to do this or can provide any alternatives?

    Hello,
    You've some options:
    - I think working with external tables would be of a great benefit to you.
This is a feature of the Oracle database, so not really APEX.
    - If you want to stick with the uploads, have a look here: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/howtos/howto_create_upload_spreadsheet_form.html
    - Vikas also created a sample app doing the load automatically here: http://htmldb.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=38131:1
    Hope that helps,
    Dimitri

How can I get the events of all calendars or a particular calendar associated with the user.
I may have to change the above link... I have tried with various combinations by appending calendar id but I am unable get the right combination

  • How to define mapping from multiple files to Oracle Tables in 9i

Around 100-200 Flat files are created every 30 minutes and each filename is different - Filename has datetime Stamp as part of the file name apart from the product code as first 12 characters.
Can anyone guide me in How to define mappings to these files using OWB ?
What I can do is consolidate all files into one known single file name and map the files to Oracle tables which I don't want to do because I need to reject errorneous files.
Can anyone provide me some tips on this ?
    Thanks in Advance.
    Sohan.

As you know, in OWB you need to define the flat file source in a 'static' way (name, location, etc. have to be defined previously), so you cannot deal directly with dinamically generated file names. One solution would be to consolidate them into a single file (which you can define statically in OWB), but prefix every record with the filename. In this way it is easy to understand from which file the rejected records came from. If you are using unix, it is very easy to write a script to do this. Something like this will do:
    awk '{printf "%s,%s\n",FILENAME,$1}' yourfilename >> onefile
where yourfile is the name of the file you are currently processing, while onefile is the name of the consolidated file. You can run this for all files in your directory by substituting yourfilename with * .
You can then disregard the file name field in OWB, while processing the rejected records based on the file name prefix by using unix utilities like grep and similar.

I assume you're using the "LKM file to Oracle SQL Loader".
For test purpose, can you just try with "LKM file to SQL" (slower) ?
We could check if the problem comes from the SQL Loader.
Your unix server has access to the oracle database ?

  • How data retrieves from an Oracle table

    Hi,
I have inserted record by record with record_number in a Oracle table. I have executed below query in PL/SQL developer. It displayed the result in same sequence order how I have inserted. But when in Toad it given in different order which does not have any sequence.
    select * from bbs_user
Anyone please explain this why it is? Please treat this as very urgent.
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the forums.
In a forum of volunteers, not being a support forum, there is no such thing as 'very urgent'. Your use of this two words in your very first post must be considered insulting and rude.
Also it appears you are completely clueless with respect to relational databases. Relational databases are about sets.
By definition -in mathematics- a set has no order.
If you want your data ordered you must use the ORDER BY clause in your SELECT statement.
Also I notice both Pl/SQL developer and Toad are non-Oracle products, so questions about these products do not belong in this forum.

Are you migrating or taking continual updates?
If migrating it might be worth considering The SQLDeveloper Migration Workbench (which moves more than just data)..

  • How to create Oracle Table in DWB from Oracle external table

    Dear all,
I have create Oracle External Table by using DWB. Kindly tell me steps that how could i able to import this external oracle table into internal oracle table now.
When I deploye this External table message arise "Name is using by an existing object.
    any help would be ppreciated.
    Thanks

In your database is there a table already existing with the same name as your external table? If there is then you can try and rename your external table in OWB and then deploy it again.
Then you can create a mapping with your source as the External Table Operator and the target as a Table Operator. When you run the mapping the data from the external table will be imported into the oracle table.
    I hope this helps.
