Render out in Shake

Hi,
I'm currently checking out my new copy of shake and attempting to get my head around a very new way of working! Just running through the tutorials and have run into something which is confusing me...any help would be great!
Basically, I'm using the render out node as per the tutorial but cannot seem to render anything other than a series of single frame files, whether they be quicktime format or not. I may be doing something wrong or not understanding the output module correctly but I was under the impression that rendered files would work in a similar way as they do from AE, producing a quicktime file which you can then view or incorporate into your other apps, not just provide a series of files that are re-openable by Shake.
Any help would be appreciated!!
Thanks in advance
Alex

  • Files I render out of shake disappear hours after the fact

I export from FCP and file in to shake. When done, I file out and import them into FCP. Hours and days later, they disappear as I am editing the time line in FCP. They are no where to be found. What is going on?

    No, none of that.
This is what happened yesterday. I had exported from Shake hours before and had shut it down. I had just finished the cut and hit export from Final Cut. It exported, and I got up to show my producer. When I came back, and hit play on the time line, it hit a media offline clip, then another, then another. I stopped the play and nearly a third of all the clips I rendered from shake were disconnected. I keep them in one folder, and they were missing from the folder too. I did a search and its like they never existed. So I spent most of the morning re-exporting them and when I went to export them from final cut, I got a general error, then 3/4th of the clips went black, then went offline. Again, not on any of my drives.

  • How to render out JUST Alpha in Media Encoder

So apparently Adobe has changed their settings in CC 2014 and Adobe After Effects no longer has the H.264 container, and is only offered as a codec for Qucktime. I've been told I have to go into Adobe Media Encoder for the H.264 codec. That's fine, problem is that Adobe Media Encoder does not really have any options for Alpha. From my understanding you have to set it to 32bpc for it to do alpha in a file, which did not seem to work, but that's irrelevant now because that's not what I need. I need to render out two files for a batch list, one with just RGB files and one with just alpha. I talked to someone from Adobe and they suggested I post here. Let me know if you need details.
    Thank you very much.

Just to be clear, and reiterate what Kevin state: H.264 (.mp4) files do not have the capability of storing an alpha channel. They are RGB only.
But that doesn't sound like a blocking issue for your workflow; you're already preparing to use an RGB file and a separate file with a black/white alpha matte for compositing at playback time.
Another point to make clear: the controls in the Composition viewer panel in After Effects have no affect on the rendered output. AME will read the comp as if these controls don't exist. Even the After Effects render queue by default will ignore these settings, though you can change some of the controls in the Render Settings dialog to respect the Comp viewer settings (ie., Current Settings). AME doesn't have this capability for After Effects comps, currently.
Third point: AME doesn't have the capability to produce an alpha-channel-only video, like After Effects does. This is regardless of what type of source you're using, After Effects comp, Premiere Pro sequence, or other.
Fourth point: please submit a feature request for any functionality you'd like to see added to AME, or After Effects: http://adobe.ly/feature_request
For your workflow the best thing will probably be to do what Jeff recommends: have After Effects render your comp to two Output Modules, one with RGB and one with Alpha, in a lossless format and then have AME encode the files to your final delivery format. This can be automated with watch folders.

  • Adobe Media Encoder can´t render out AE Ray-Trace Composition

    Hey,
AME can´t render out my composition (or sequence if i include the comp in a PP sequence) which includes some 3D stuff.
I am able to render it out in AE in a few minutes, preview it easily in AE and even in PP but i´m not able to render it out in AME or PP.
AME says it would take like 10+ Hours to render it and doesn´t come to an end.
I tried multiple encoding settings but nothing worked.
Also i checked, that cuda rendering is enabled in all my Adobe programs, but nothing helped...
    AE File .aep :
    Dropbox - Twitch Infovideo.aep
AME .epr Preset for encoding :
Dropbox - Media Encoder Error Test.epr
    Thanks for helping,
    Johannes

It raises another question: what settings do I need to encode the comp in 720p resolution without taking up lots of space?
Well, it depends on whether you need a production master (something for broadcast, for example, or to use as a source for other encoding tasks) or if you want a version for distribution. If it's the former, there's nothing wrong with "lots of space" - A Quicktime file with PNG or Animation codec is a good idea, but it will take a lot of space. If it's the latter, H264 is perfect but there's no built-in preset to take 720 material to the web.
    You could do this:
    * Pick the generic H264 template. You'll see that it will give an error if you attempt to render, because the default setting uses an H264 profile/level which doesn't let you use HD resolutions.
    * In the H264 video options, set the "Profile" menu to "Main" and "Level" to 4.0. That will keep it compatible to Quicktime and Flash player, while allowing larger frame sizes and higher bit rates.
    * Set Target Bitrate to 5-8 Mbps and Maximum Bitrate to 9-10 Mbps if you're targetting web delivery. That's a bit over what Apple uses for 720p content on the Apple TV, for example.
The H264 original preset will instruct you in the comment field to stretch to 640x480 in Output Module. There's no need, since you are using a profile/level combination which allows higher frame sizes.

  • Render out to QT problems

    Hi
Shot/editing a seq in HDV 1080i 60, all my MOTION files are the same, looks good in timeline...my render control codec is Apple Pro RES 422...now when I render out the QT movie with the current settings I get this horrible double image on all movements of my FCP keyframed GFX (such as a box moving from left to right and bouncing as it hits the edges of the screen, etc), I guess this is interlacing problem, all my MOTION files have the same issue...
SO, how to eliminate this problem? Have a look at the images...
    http://web.mac.com/kbcv/VideoWork/test.html
    Thanks
    k

    Thanks Jerry
The box GFX is just a jpeg moving using FCP keyframing and the text which I did in MOTION is same seq settings as FCP seq. So there's no way to change just the GFX field dom, and my seq is upper field both FCP and Motion. I captured HDV and am using HDV seq settings, outputting same settings - should I next time capture my HDV footage at Pro RES and set my seq to Pr Res as well? Would this fix the problem?
In the meantime, what to do re: this bad look.

  • How to render out with an alpha channel

I want to render out a QuickTime animation so I can layer it over some video in Final Cut Pro. How do I get an Alpha channel in the video. Have tried the Animation Codec but that doesn't do it. Which codec should I use?

  • Render out a blend mode

is there any way to render out a blend mode layer so when it's on normal it still looks like the blend mode with the transparency etc...
I want to export some design to .png files to use in a web page, and I need the blend mode to work with out the photoshop background. I don't think you can use blend mode in HTML, CSS or Dreamweaver.

Simply - no. Blend modes will only work within Photoshop files. Outside Photoshop they need to be rendered onto opaque or transparent pixels, to retain their appearance.
Its really impossible to tell with compete certainty, without a more detailed explanation. (which mode, whats it interacting with) But the answer, again in case you didnt hear it first time, is likely to be … no

  • Can't render out 1.44 pixel ratio for SD 16:9 UK TVC broadcast requirements ?

I'm prepping a TV advert for broacast in the UK and the station require an SD 16:9 1.44 pixel ratio 720x576 (1024x576), the problem is this just doesn't seem possible in after effects or any adobe porduct I can see ?
The only thing I can do is render out a 1.46 pixel ratio 720x576 (1050x576) version.
Any help on this would be greatly apreciated !

1.44 is actually wrong according to the specifications. The PAR for NTSC footage is also wrong. There's an article somewhere on the Adobe site that explains the decision and there's an article by Chris and Trish Meyer on the subject. Adobe changed it to be more, not less compliant. It wasn't that long ago and we were working with 640 X 480 as the standard video size for digital production. The very best workflow is to work in square pixels anyway and only squeeze the image as a final step. And as I said before, there are dozens of codecs that don't even have a spot in their container to define PAR. For some it's like trying to add PPI info to a .gif -
What codec do they require? What data rate? Where's the white paper. I'd be glad to read it. In practical terms, and for every network from the US, to France, to Japan, that I've ever submitted work to, match their request for delivery format and they never look back. They just take your money and play your stuff. Only once in more than 40 years of submitting programming to television did I have to send a network a different file or tape.
You can't be the only AE artist producing for broadcast in the UK. I've been in television since 1969 and was one of the first utilizers of desktop production in a major US market. It's about scan lines and timeing (frame size). Go to Angie Taylors's blog and ask her the question. She's one of the top AE artists and trainers in the UK.

  • Frame Animation duration is different when I render out.

Hi, everyone. I am using Photoshop CS6 to make Frame animation. I created 57 frame with each duration 0.08 second was set.
However when I render out, the video seem much quicker than I preview in PS (H.264 1080p 29.97).
Then I check the duration of the video, it's only 3.24second long, by doing the math (57 * 0.08s) it should be 4.56s long.
I've check all my fps setting, I've tried render out 24fps , 29.97 fps or 30 fps, all go for the result of shorten length.
Can anyone help out ? thankyou.

Then I check the duration of the video, it's only 3.24second long, by doing the math (57 * 0.08s) it should be 4.56s long.
But then again, 1s divided by 29.97 is not 0.08s, is it not? If you want to obsess about math, then by all means do it right. You have a fundamental misunderstanding here and are not working to spec.

  • Rotate project -90 when render out

    Hi There
would someone beable to help? Is it possible to rotate the AE project -90 when you go to render out final project, if not, what is the best way to achieve this?
    May thanks for any help!

    No, Szalam means this:
Build your comp in the H&V resolution you want: you're probably rotating an HD monitor 90 degrees, so work at 1080x1920 or 720x1280.
All done?  Good.  Make an HD comp in the delivery specs, either 1920x1080 or 1280x720.
Add your original vertical comp to this new comp and rotate it either 90 degrees clowckwise or counterclockwise.
Ain't no such thing as vertical playback: it doesn't exist.  There's only the normal playback.  Your task is to keep track of how the monitor will be rotated.

  • How do I render out in Animation codec from Motion 5 ?

Hi - Just got Motion 5 and I noticed that to render out there don't seem to be as many codec options for Quicktime as in previous versions of Motion. Am I missing something here? For eg there doesn't seem to be any way to render out in Animation codec.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

Thanks a lot! Yeah I just bought compressor - which is great in itself but still prefer if it was integrated into motion itself.
Oh well.. It lets apple sell more product.
    Cheers!

  • Can't render out of Motion 5 - it's all corrupted!!

    Hi all,
Any help greatly appreciated - it doesn't matter what I do, everything I render out of the new Motion is totally corrupted - sample frame below (all look a little like this):
    Nasty!
Everything looks great up until render. Tried numerous compressor/size variations, always the same.
Motion 4 still renders out fine.
Running a Mac Pro with ATI Radeon HD 4870
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    Thanks Guys.
Don't think it's a project problem as this happens using templates, and stuff of my own creation. I've got a feeling it might be a hardware thing too.
    I'm running two graphics cards:
ATI Radeon HD 4870 (DVI and Display Port monitoring)
NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 (No displays connected)
I'm additionally running a Blackmagic intensity pro card for monitoring (which isn't of course currently supported by Motion 5 / FCP X).
I came accross this article :
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3842
which although promising, didn't help me as I removed my secondary monitor connection and the same thing happend.
Very interestingly, as you sugguested, as a test I applied some effects on a timeline in FCP X, and the render becomes corrupt as the effects are applied:

  • Random clips render out dark for no reason...

I'm rendering out some regular qt clips in 800x600(original clips are in the same size). Regardless of what codec I use, some specific clips always render out darker then displayed in premiere (both the source and preview window display that it should be bright). I've double and triple checked to make sure there are no effects, no changes in opacity, nothing above these layers that would make it darker or anything. Even tried copying and pasting just those specific clips that have the darkness issue into a new sequence and it still renders out dark.
I've solved the issue but I'd still like to understand what the cause is if anyone knows.
My solution was replacing the dark clips with exactly the same file from the bin...in essence, delete the dark clip, drag the same clip from the bin into the timeline. And v'wala it was fine. So any ideas as to why this happened so I could avoid going nuts in the future?
    Many thanks in advance!

The project is a few gig....can't really upload it anywhere. Setting used was based off the default dv ntsc, just resized to 800x600. Shot in dv ntsc as well.

  • Render out square pixels?

When I render out of After Effects CC 2014, I ask for
640X480 apple 422 square pixels (current settings)
    I get
    Pixel aspect NTSC - CCIR
    But I WANT
    pixel aspect square
When I render out of FCP7 using Compressor, I can get all of the above WITH SQUARE pixels.
I import a Compressor rendered clip into an FCP7 sequence with settings as above, and no render within fcp is necessary, and the Properties shows pixel-aspect Square
I import an AE (with effects added to that SAME clip) rendered out with CURRENT settings into that SAME sequence and render IS necessary and Properties shows NTSC-CCIR
Any way to render out with square pixels? I understand default in AE is square, so...
    What am I doing wrong?

Yes, I've been advised that 640 X 480 deinterlaced 422HQ Sq. is the best format for me to project from my laptop at a special screening.  It really looks beautiful.
    But that's not my question.
I'm asking why Compressor will give me that format and that apparently AE won't.
I'm using the a clip from the CORRECTLY formatted footage.  I bring it into AE in order to add an effect. But when I render it out at CURRENT SETTINGS I get NTSC - CCIR not square.
Question, how can I add an effect in AE without destroying the existing formatting of my clip?

  • Render issues in Shake on iMac

Just purchased new iMac (20", OSX 10.5.5, 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB Ram, ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro) and Shake 4.1. So as a relatively new user to Shake (1yr VFX experience in school and work) and new to Mac, imagine my shock when I called Apple about my issue and found out their support is limited to install issues only!
Anyhow I could go into that but won't, and will cut to the real issue!
Am working on HD footage. Shake would render between 50% and 75% of 369 frames and then crash out of flipbook. So got frustrated and quit for the day... came back next day and now won't render at all. Won't render in flipbook or render from a file out node. Went to console tab in shake no errors reported, its as if Shake is not even starting render process period! Bummer ;-)!
So before I use Apples solution, uninstall and re-install Shake... thats the extent of their knowledge base....
Was wondering if any of you gurus out there have a better solution, or an idea of what caused this issue. The system and program were purchased a whopping 3 days ago, and I don't want this to be an ongoing issue.
    Cheers and thanx

Just posted this on another forum..... same topic.
    Hmmmm
Okay well back after having to rush out of town for the weekend, and yesterday filed in some HD footage and just tried (without success) to do a flipbook of footage with no extraneous nodes, just a straight flippy of it. LOL now I believe this should work no custom .h's involved or anything. And yes no render still, same thing no flipbook at all.... so maybe it is 10.5.5 issue...... haven't tried (10.5.4)yet and well frustration is kicking in .
Unistalled and reinstalled Shake, no change. I guess my real issue here is that render worked initially (although it crashed out around frame 250 of 369), and I wish I was more of an IT guy but am not (yes starts to rant here). It seems to me I have purchased a very sexy system and yes some very verbose software (that doesn't go unrecognized here) that is not supported by the seller (Apple) steam starts coming out of ears LOL. Now all this footage and nodes etc rendered out fine on the Linux systems at school, but won't render here on this new swanky system. So my intro to Mac has left me less than enamored with Apple. OK rant over
So can .h files effect rendering even if they are not in tree of footage being rendered? Would I have been better off with an Nvidia graphics card, if it was available for this particular iMac? And should a simple render really be this complicated (fully understanding that Shake is a powerful and complex program)? The console tab in Shake shows no errors during Shake launch other than some .h files are not being loaded.
I fully appreciate any responses to my post so far, and yes haven't tried all suggestions yet, but my desire to become an IT expert is low LOL as apposed to my desire to do compositing which is high. Maybe the 2 are synonymous with each other, boy I hope not.
So please keep the suggestions coming in I will try the ones which fall into my knowledge base and am thankful for any and all suggestions.
    Frustrated new Apple customer.
