Reorganize tablespaces in Oracle standby server
Dear All,
Our current configuration is
SAP ECC 5.0
Oracle 10.2.0.2.0
HP/UX 11iv1
We have Oracle Data Guard installed and working. Since a couple of our SAP tablespaces are very fragmented, we would like to reorganize them using brtools. These tablespaces are large (300+ GB) and we don't have the downtime to do the reorganization in the primary server. I was wondering if we can do the following:
1. discontinue applying archive logs to the standby
2. open the standby database
3. reorganize the tablespaces
4. shutdown and mount the standby database
5. continue applying the archive logs from step 1 on
I am not sure step 5 would work. The SCN would have changed during the tablespace reorganization.
Thank you very much,
Fong
> Also, since our primary server is production critical, we are worrying about some locking issues during the online reorganization. That is why we would like to do the reorganization in the standby server.
Stop worrying and learn how online reorgs actually works!
You've payed a huge bunch of money for a DBMS that allows online reorgs and now you don't want to use it because you are in fear.
And you are in fear because you don't seen to know but in doubt and uncertainty...
Bad place to be - especially if your system is so critical.
There is no way you can move your data on your standby size and then be able to re-synch the data with the primary site, since only physical standby is supported for SAP systems (that is block changes are transferred from primary to standby db - not SQL commands).
With online reorg you can actually do what the name promises - perform your reorgs online, while the whole application is fully up and running.
If you don't trust it (which is a good thing), then try it out on a test system before (you should practise it anyhow before you reorganize the production db).
regards,
Lars

OK, this isn't really a replication question but anyway...I am implementing an Oracle Standby Server environment using Oracle 8i. In Oracle 9i, there is a initialisation parameter called ARCHIVE_LAG_TARGET which sets the maximum period between archiving of the online redo log. This parameter does not exist in Oracle 8i, so can I implement similar functionality by setting up a cron job to execute "ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG CURRENT" at regular intervals?
Or does anyone have any other suggestions (apart from moving to 9i :-) )Hi Vaclav,
At the first stage, you should decide to select which strategy is suitable, for your specific needs.There are two options; switchover or failover strategy. Switchover is little bit hard to configure than failover data guard installation, but more effective. Under this circumstance, I recommend you choose switchover strategy in your SAP landscape.
After you determined the correct scenario for your needs, then you can start the configuration.

Restore only 1 tablespace to standby server.
Hello,
I would like to restore only 1 tablespace to a standby server.
This is what I was planned to do :
startup nomount of the standby server
connect with rman from the primary to the standby with :
rman target / auxiliary sys/xxxx@standby_SID
set until scn 4847169298;
restore standby controlfile;
restore tablespace xxx
But my question, do I need to specify something to skip the other tablespace ?
How will my controlfile know that this standby db only has this single tablespace and that the other tbs are not on this server ?
any help welcome,
KristofYou will need, at a minimum,
SYSTEM
SYSAUX (if 10g)
the Undo tablespace (whatever name you have given it).
.. and the tablespace xxx that you want
If you use the controlfile, you'd have to take all the other tablespaces offline

Oracle 10gR2 Data guard physical or logical standby server?
Hi
We are planing to implement an Oracle 10gR2 data guard standby server for DR purposes, I found out that there are two type of standby server which is logical and physical standby server. I want to know which one is preferable? in term of complexity of setup and maintenance?
regardsWell it depends on what you mean by maintenance. I found the physical standby to be very little trouble at all ; however the logical standby has restrictions on it that the physical standby does not. In essence the physical standby merely digest archive logs; where as the logical standby uses logminer like functionality to process sql statements much like Oracle streams.
Hope that helps,

ORACLE 10G RAC+STANDBY server
We have a ORACLE RAC 10G based on 2 nodes with 1 disk array for test purposes.
Now, we want to connect a standby server to RAC with its own disk array. Standby server with array will be located in another city.
How can we realize it?Hi friend,
We have tested with the following : we have 1og RAC (10.2.0.3.0) with Single Physical Standby database :
RAC Database :
bash-3.00$ export ORACLE_SID=racdb
bash-3.00$ rman target sys/sysracdb@racdb
RMAN> connect catalog rman/rman@racdb
RMAN> backup device type disk format '/backup/rman/%U' database plus archivelog;
RMAN> backup device type disk format '/backup/rman/%U' current controlfile for standby;
Note : Transfer the backup to the standby database location.
Single Instance Database
SQL> create spfile from pfile='/oracle/admin/stdby/pfile/initstdby.ora';
SQL> shutdown immediate;
SQL> startup nomount;
[oracle@linux7 pfile]$ rman target sys/sysracdb@racdb auxiliary=sys/sysracdb
RMAN> duplicate target database for standby;
Note : It will restore....
bash-3.00$ export ORACLE_SID=stdby
bash-3.00$ export ORACLE_HOME=/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1
SQL> alter system set control_files='+DATA_GRP1/stdby/CONTROLFILE/current.256.665416399' scope=spfile;
SQL> shutdown immediate;
SQL> startup nomount;
SQL> alter database mount standby database;
SQL> alter database recover managed standby database disconnect from session;
Thanks

How to exclude tablespace in logical standby database
Dear all,
In which way does the creation procedure of a logical standby database differ than the standard ORA9.2 procedure (http://www.oracle.com/pls/db92/db92.to_pdf?pathname=server.920%2Fa96653.pdf&remark=docindex) if I want to exclude a tablespace in my standby database?
Excluding tablespace in physical standby database is impossible.
Thanks in advance.The goal of a stand by database is to become a clone fed online with transactions coming from the active database. If the cloned database in a physical dataguard configuration diverges from the active database it is useless, as transaction control takes place at a lower level (physical addresses are involved).

I want to upgrade my OS from official repository on Primary and Standby Servers. And I have a question:
Will I have a problem with my RDBMS after upgrade OS (e.g. statuses in dba_registry will become INVALID)?It's Ok.
Now I have:
$ cat /etc/issue
Oracle Linux Server release 6.4
No any problem. -
Will RMAN delete archive log files on a Standby server?
Environment:
Oracle 11.2.0.3 EE on Solaris 10.5
I am currently NOT using an RMAN repository (coming soon).
I have a Primary database sending log files to a Standby.
My Retention Policy is set to 'RECOVERY WINDOW OF 8 DAYS'.
Question: Will RMAN delete the archive log files on the Standby server after they become obsolete based on the Retention Policy or do I need to remove them manually via O/S command?
Does the fact that I'm NOT using an RMAN Repository at the moment make a difference?
Couldn't find the answer in the docs.
Thanks very much!!
-garyHello again Gary;
Sorry for the delay.
Why is what you suggested better?
No, its not better, but I prefer to manage the archive. This method works, period.
Does that fact (running a backup every 4 hours) make my archivelog deletion policy irrelevant?
No. The policy is important.
Having the Primary set to :
CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO APPLIED ON STANDBYBut set to "NONE" on the Standby.
Means the worst thing that can happen is RMAN will bark when you try to delete something. ( this is a good thing )
How do I prevent the archive backup process from backing up an archive log file before it gets shipped to the standby?
Should be a non-issue, the archive does not move, the REDO is transported and applied. There's SQL to monitor both ( Transport and Apply )
For Data Guard I would consider getting a copy of
"Oracle Data Guard 11g Handbook" - Larry Carpenter (AKA Dr. Paranoid ) ISBN 978-0-07-162111-2
Best Oracle book I've read in 10 years. Covers a ton of ground clearly.

Logical standby server stopped applying changes
Hi
I set up a logical standby database with database guard and it worked fine for some time. But recently I had to use it again and discovered that applying changes from primary database to secondary database just stopped working. I see in V$ARCHIVED_LOG one entry per day. If I restart the logical standby then the changes from primary server are also applied. But if I just make a change on primary server and even call 'alter system switch logfile' then I see an entry in V$ARCHIVED_LOG on primary server but not on standby server (BTW in general there are much more entries in this view on the primary server). I checked pairs of log files indicated by the parameter *.log_file_name_convert in standby server's spfile: their last changed date is always the same.
I will paste spfile of my standby server (dh5). Primary server name is dh2.

JMHi,
Nice to hear you issue got resolved.
It is good practice to keep monitoring the progress of SQL apply on the logical standby on a regular basis.
You can mark my response as helpful if it has helped you.

How to displays the standard open file dialog box in Oracle Apps Server
Hi,
I am having a form, where i am opening a file and putting that file content in a text box.
This is my code written in WHEN-BUTTON-PRESSED trigger:
declare
in_file Text_IO.File_Type;
linebuf VARCHAR2(8000);
filename VARCHAR2(30);
BEGIN
filename:=GET_FILE_NAME('d:\Rajesh\Practice', File_Filter=>'Text Files (*.txt)|*.txt|',select_file=>false);
in_file := Text_IO.Fopen(filename, 'r');
LOOP
Text_IO.Get_Line(in_file, linebuf);
:text_item5:=substr(:text_item5||linebuf||chr(10),1,5000);
END LOOP;
EXCEPTION
WHEN no_data_found THEN
Text_IO.Put_Line('Closing the file...');
Text_IO.Fclose(in_file);
END;
I have posted this in ORacle Apps Server.Where i was not able to get the Open Dialoq Box.It is giving an error as
"FRM-40735:WHEN-BUTTON-PRESSED trigger raised unhandled exception ORA-302000.".
I think the GET_FILE_NAME function is not supported in the Apps Server.
Is there any alternative solution for getting the OPEN DIALOG WINDOW in Oracle Apps Server?
Pls let me know.Hi!

Are you sure? I think, that File Dialog, called by LabVIEW File Dialog from Advanced File Functions Palette doesn't blocking any cycles in subVI, which running in UI Thread. Look in my old example (that was prepared for other topic, but may be good for this topic too).

Can I import a tablespace into Oracle 10g Express Edition
I am very new to Oracle 10g Express Edition. We have a server running Oracle Enterprise Edition and we have been creating a transportable tablespace to be imported into a few servers. This works fine for us. I would like to find out if I can import the tablespace into Oracle 10g Express Edition. Someone told me that I should be able to do that but I have no clue to how to do it. If this is possible, can someone tell where to find the information how to do this.
Thanks,
RJI finally tried it and I got the following errors:
IMP-00017: following statement failed with ORACLE error 721:
"BEGIN sys.dbms_plugts.checkCompType('COMPATSG','10.2.0.2.0'); END;"
IMP-00003: ORACLE error 721 encountered
ORA-00721: changes by release 10.2.0.2.0 cannot be used by release 10.2.0.1.0
ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_PLUGTS", line 2004
ORA-06512: at line 1
IMP-00000: Import terminated unsuccessfully
Am I right that the server that I exported the tablespace is using Oracle 10.2.0.2.0 while Oracle Express is 10.2.0.1.0? I looked around and I did not see Oracle Express version 10.2.0.2.0 that I can download. Is there a patch or something to upgrade it?
Thanks,

Installation of a siebeldb in oracle 9i server
Hi, Im trying to install siebel database server on an oracle 9i server, i have created 2 tablespaces named data02 and am using the existing index file indx as the index for the siebel tablespace. The command that is run in order to set up a schema etc is the following :-
C:\sea77\siebsrvr\bin\ddlimp.exe /u SIEBEL /p ***** /c SiebSrvr_Siebel /g SSE_ROLE /f C:\sea77\dbsrvr/Oracle/ddl.ctl /b SIEBEL_PWSSBL.PWSIN.NET\DATA02_TABLESPACE /X SIEBEL_PWSSBL.PWSIN.NET\INDX_TABLESPACE /e Y /Z N /W Y /9 Y /s N /l
The error that i am getting is this:- Error: Argument Default Tablespace value is too long
Siebel would not accept the service name and would take only the full database name, i was wondering if anyone would have some idea regarding this.
Any help would be appreciated.here is how you do in Oracle PL/SQL :
declare
my_date date;
my_col my_tbl.col1%type;
begin
select date_col into my_date
from date_tbl where <where clause>;
select col1 into my_col
from my_tbl where date_col = my_date;
exception
<handle exceptions>
end;
There is one thing to note in PL/SQL, if your select query returns more than one row then either you've to use a collection variable or use a cursor. -
