Repair permissions issue

having updated my intel imac with 10.5.1, I have repeated issues reported by disk utility when repairing permissions - these are below.
should these be of concern? is there something i can do to, or files i can delete, to fix?

ENDS

I got the following sometime after updating to 10.5.1. Eudora 6.4 hangs/crashes after it gets mail. OK, I switched to Mail for now. Today Mail hung/crashed, and then iPhoto (iLife '08) *really hung* and even Force Quit wouldn't come on...had to force Shut Down on the PowerPC, then restart. I followed with Repair Permissions.

  • Repairing Permissions Issue in 10.6.5

Hello to all. I just started using my new iMac running 10.6.5 and whenever I repair permissions, I get this long list every time. In other words, Disk Utility reports that they are repaired but the same ones reappear again the next time. A report follows and I would appreciate any comments. Thanks.

[At the risk of being redundant|http://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?threadID=&q=repair+permissio ns&objID=&dateRange=all&userID=Barney-15e&numResults=30],
The repair permissions database (or whatever it is) doesn't get updated regularly with the updates themselves. So, when the updates change things, the repair permissions database doesn't know about them, and flags them. They are not wrong, nor are they problems. The best way to not see those things is to not repair permissions unless you have a need to.
When do you have a need to? When something indicates it can't continue because it can't access a file that it should or doesn't have permission to do so. And, that is only true if it is trying to access something in the system space. If it is in your home folder, repairing permissions won't fix it.
Unless you actually have a permission problem, you don't need to repair permissions.

  • Disc utility repair permissions issue

When I repair disc permissions, a whole slew of errors are found.  it says they're repaired, but if I run it again, the same errors appear. This happens even if I relaunch the program or shut down the computer.  The same errors are ALWAYS there.   I don't think it affects the performance, but this never happened with any of the other OS on my MACS over the past 15+ years and is quite annoying.  Does anyone know how to resolve this??

Hi, if it's the "ACL found but not expected" errors, this fixed it for one person...

  • Stubborn repair permissions issue

For over 6 months, my desktop has been operating very slow.  Specifically, there is a 8 second delay when using Adobe's editing suite.  I tried using Disk Utility in Safe Mode to repair my home drive but this made no difference.        I finally had a breakthrough after creating a brand spanking new Admin account.
I logged into my new account and was getting smooth Youtube playback, no more delays while editing in Adobe's suite ..etc.
I would rather not have 2 admin accounts and spend countless hours setting up the new admin account (email, fonts, preferences, shortcuts..etc.)
Is there a way to repair the permission on my original admin account ?     I have heard some users actually LOSING THEIR DATA after doing a repair using the OS Disk.
    My system specs:
    OS 10.6.8
    16 GB Ram
    Quadro 4000 Graphics Card

I wasn't able to find the exact file but I did fix the issue by leaving out legacy adobe directories.  The problem was in
    /library/application support/adobe
I do however have a new issue as a result/restoring  folders from the library.
My Mac mail app is asking me to setup a account as if its brand new.  "Welcome to Mail "
My dock loads with the default Mac OS icons.
My browser shortcuts are still there but some of the customizations are missing such as homepage now defaults to apple.
I checked the mail folder in Library and my pop folders are all there.  My mailbox folders are also there.

  • Repair permissions takes for ever again

    Hi,
I had a problem on my PB G4 further to running Repair Permissions from a Tiger boot disk: it took almost a night for Disk Utility to read through the database and to repair permissions.
I decided to proceed with an A&I of Leopard, using my 10.5.1 DVD followed with a 10.5.3 Combo update. I ran Repair Permissions at this stage, which took 15'; I believed that I had worked it out.
Unfortunately, there were a couple of other Apple updates to carry out - e.g; Quicktime, as well as a few non-Apple software re-installs which used to run smoothly prior to my initial Repair Permissions issue.
I ran Repair Permissions at the end of the procedure and ... it kept reading the permissions database relatively quickly, BUT it took 1:30 hour to repair them! Eventually, it ended up with just a single correction related to "private/etc/cups".
I do not intend to run through the whole A&I process again.
Does anybody have a clue to speed up this painful Repair Permissions process?
    Thanks in advance,

Disk Utility's Repair Permissions doesn't do anything for items in a user's home folder, or if an application is not installed using Apple's installer, so for the most part it is pretty much useless - although some people swear by it (others at it). You really shouldn't be messing with the permissions at all on system files and folders (this includes the "apply to enclosed items" from the Get Info), so it won't do anything anyway unless these get messed up.

  • No issues, but curious..why do I always get permissions repaired when I click on 'repair permissions in Disk Utility......it usually has to do with core permissions and it's happened since i got this MacBook Pro in 3/11..it continues with 10.7

  • Disk utility - repair permissions keeps reporting same issues

my machine has been unstable for a while, and i thought it was time to repair permissions.
normally, after being run a couple of times, there are no more to be repaired. however, this time, the same 35 lines of permissions being changed are displayed over and over. also after rebooting.
    1. why aren't the permissions finally corrected?
most issues concern 'System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app/Contents', 'System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iPhotoAccess.framework/Versions/A/Resources/P lugins' and a couple of warnings that suid-files are changed and won't be repaired.
    2. i never used front row, - what's happening?
    3. what's with the suid-files?
    4. will reinstalling leopard help my situation?
    5. if i use time machine to restore, how can i be sure the problems don't persist? or 'get back in'?

why aren't the permissions finally corrected?
Apple changed the structure of some of its packages without updating the repair permissions mechanism. Until and unless they release a patch, nothing done will stop those messages from appearing. Disregard them.
i never used front row, - what's happening?
You installed a package which updated it.
    what's with the suid-files?
    Those messages are normal.

  • Repair Disk Permissions Issues

I'm not sure I am posting this in the correct community but here goes . . .
I have a 17" Macbook Pro running the latest version of Snow Leopard. It is almost 2 years old and I have 4 gb RAM.
Recently, it seems to be slowing down and I have to run repair disk permissions 2-3 times a week to recoup a little speed. I also delete my Firefox cache regularly to try to gain a little there. I do make a few videos in iMovie and initially I thought that was the problem but this week I have not really worked in iMovie much and it is still slow. There seems to be some issues in the log of the repair permissions. I hope they show in this image. I don't know what these mean or how to fix them. It is the "permissions differ" entries I am confused about.

You can ignore those permissions per support article
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA21090
Since you brought up iMove, I suspect your storage is nearly full as this most certainly causes the computer to slow down. video files are the biggest culprit.
Look in your Activity Monitor and reduce the drive space by copying to a external, Disk Utility HFS+ formatted external powered drive of unnecessary files so your boot drive is ideally below 50% filled (yea I know but the computer slows down after that) and not more than 75% filled.
Once you have done that. Get another newer external powered HFS drive and download the free Carbon Copy Cloner and clone the internal drive to the external.
Hold option and boot off the external clone, test it out then use Disk Utility to erase the internal and then reverse clone the external onto the internal, this will defragment and optimize your drive so the OS and programs are on the fast part of the drive, not the slow parts.
Reboot into the internal and run off of the free OnyX's maintainence and cleaning aspects and reboot.
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/
Sir speedy machine here we come!
Now of course you may have other issues that could be causing your slow down, like not enough RAM or some sort of failed process or leftover program, tweaks or simply a slow Internet.
You can opt to simply reinstall OS X 10.6 ( by holding c and booting off the installer disk ) over your installed version (doesn't touch files or programs) then immediatly Software Updating until clear, that will clean anything hanging out in OS X.
If you still have slowdowns, then it's in what geeks call "User land" basically something installed outside of root, like a program or only runs in user, not in OS X.
For that you need to create a new user, transfer your files via the Shared Drop and wean yourself off the old user and finally delete it. Also install all new versions of your third party programs removing the originals first.
    That should do it.

  • Permissions Repair, same issues every time

    Hi there
I have a question about permission repair. I have been having a lot of quirks with my machine and, following the advice of people here, am always running disk utility to repair permissions. However, every time I run it, I get the same leghty list of issues. Now, I have read the knowledge base article and know that some are safe to ignore, but my list is pretty long. Can anyone tell me what is going on?
    Thanks
This is from my last run:

A friendly suggestion: search the forum before posting a question. This one is asked almost every day.
The errors are spurious. Ignore them.
Although repairing permissions is a popular ritual, it's almost never useful. Don't waste time on it unless you have a specific reason to think it's necessary.

  • I'm getting a lot of issues when I try to repair permissions.

Are these safe to ignore? Thanks for your help in advance.

As for the other permissions, I believe the OS has created a "link" between the new permissions and the old, rather than replacing with the current.
Neither set of issues is a problem, unless your applications start acting up--which shouldn't happen.

  • Identity/permissions issues ex repair

    1st generation MBA.
New HDD & Logic board replaced along with hinge/display.
    Issues - some workable, some troublesome;
Mail - "imports" all messages as if new identity.
    Evernote - likewise.
    iPhoto - refuses to access.
    itunes - likewise
Address book - wont launch but attempts crash mail.
Skype - crashes instantly upon outbound call.
TimeMachine - doesn't recognize its own sparsebundle, "never backed up".
    etc etc etc.
Unit is backed up to TimeCapsule.
Tech suggests remedy is do a full system restore from TimeCapsule.
    Can someone knowledgeable comment:
    - is this likely to fix the issue? (Same old data, same "new identity" implicit in new board/drive).
    - is this likely to take months to restore?
    - is there an alternative obvious remedy?
    thanks

Couldn't resist the "repair permissions" button. It chewed for a while & reported permissions OK on subsequent verification. Which solved precisely zero problems.
Back to the shop, this time tried to look as imbecilic as possible "My address book used to pop up with people's phone numbers, now it just bursts like a bubble, I want it the old way, please do not return until it's like the old way", etc. I made sure to add "what does restore mean", "what's an operating system". I can't take it anymore, have replaced drive (twice), screen & hinge, logic board, OSX, all user data & purchased apps. If they simply move my files to a new machine and charge me full price I'll be out another two grand, if I have to fiddle with this thing further I'll suffer a psychotic episode. (at least with Vista machines I have the accumulated benefit of decades wasted learning by trial & error). Oversenstive? Only because I'm not discussing the torture my other (ATY Radeon X1600-equipped MBP) Mac is simultaneously inflicting upon me...
I shan't mark this 'solved' until I can delightedly report recovery. Meanwhile, I have enough residual curiosity to ask - can one MA files back to a fresh OS install from OLDER TC baks; this one seemed to force "most recent" & as Mac Medic observes 'reinject the problem'.

  • Colorsync/Display issue after repairing permissions

I'm working on a friends Mac with OS 3.9. She hasn't repaired permissions since Panther came out. Her computer was super slow, so I ran the repair. Display was perfect before the repairs. It completely improved the system but after the reboot the display got ugly. Blazingly bright colors mostly. I tried going into colorsync and changing profiles but to no avail they were all ugly. Then I tried to fix the problem by re-calibrating... no luck. When I reboot the system it comes up the correct colors for a moment then after a few seconds trips back into ugly mode. I tried removing the colorsync profiles and placed them in a folder on the desktop for safe keeping. Rebooted... still no luck. I might not have removed all the right files. Last thing I tried was to repair profiles in the ColorSync app. It fixed problems... but once again, it didn't change the display back to normal before or after the reboot.
Please help me... (She has a Apple Display)

    Welcome To Discussions JCTrick!
Open System Preferences > Displays > Display.
    Adjust the settings there.
If that doesn't help, click on Color.
Checkmark the box for Show profiles for this display only.
Click on the display you wish to adjust, to highlight it.
    Click Calibrate.
Follow the instructions. Sorry, I'm afraid I can't walk you through them, as it's been so long since I've done it! But you can stop the process at any time.
If none of that helps, run the Apple Hardware Test.
    Good Luck!

  • Can't Repair Permissions and other issues

Just updated to 10.5.2 and started having some video problems. The laptop won't wake from sleep, or if it does, the screen may go blank again. Also, upon waking sometimes, the mouse seems sluggish almost as if there is a remote user. Tried repairing permissions and can't get it to repair permissions. Also, when I switch users or try to authorize installations, it tells me the user name or password of one of the administrator's is incorrect and I know it's not. Very strange things.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Did you backup your data before updating?

  • "App store quit unexpectedly" - Neither "update combo" nor "repair permissions" has corrected the issue

I have already followed the instructions to delete the app and run the Update Combo, in fact I have done this twice. I have also repaired the permissions more than once.
Does anyone have any other suggestions on how to get the App Store to work again?

Check the startup disk ...  (not the same as repairing permissions)
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If DU reports errors, start up from your Mac install disc to make repairs.

  • Repair permissions has these issues?

Are these anything to worry about? I have only had the macbook for about a month or so. The same errors have come up each time for about two weeks now. So I am assuming they dont get fixed.
