Replacement X220 Screen Glossy instead of Matte

Hey Guys,
I purchased an X220 a few weeks back and I recently noticed a couple of defects on the display in the way of white spots. I called Lenovo and they sent an onsite guy to replace it earlier today. What the tech brought to replace my panel turned out to be a Refurb panel that was pretty significanly marred with surface scratches. To make matters worse, I couldn't even tell if it was the correct panel. Unlike the original display, the new screen is EXTREMELY glossy. As far as I can tell, the X220s only come with one IPS panel manufacturer so it didn't make sense that I got a different panel. For a while I thought I got the TN panel instead but the viewing angles are not bad and the screen does not go negative when i look at it from extreme angles.
Luckily for me, this replacement panel was somewhat broken as well so the ticket got reopened for another new screen. I'm a bit afraid of them trying to stick me with another messed up refurb. What can I do about this? I called Lenovo and they said that it should be the right part. I really dont want a glossy screen =(
Best,
Lawrence

Right you are! And thanks!
I signed a letter my local tech wrote for me to be responsible for any damage, then hooked the protective film with my fingernail - the edges are almost impossible to see - and peeled it off, so the warranty repair could finally be completed and the machine returned to me.
Why the hell isn't there a removal sticker on the film or note packed with the panel?!
My local tech talked by phone with three people at IBM/Lenovo, and none of them knew about the film, telling him to just order yet another panel. The many people I talked to in Support and Parts were equally unknowledgeable and unhelpful.
The good news is that the new panel is much improved over the original panel, with about 80% less ghosting (now almost impossible to see), and about 80% less backlight leak (not that bad to begin with). Whereas I rated the original panel good, I rate the replacement panel as very good.
Hope that helps,
John

  • Satellite Z830 - how to replace broken Screen?

A careless family member has succeeded in cracking the screen of a fairly new Toshiba z830. It's broken quite badly, so I doubt it will be reparable.
I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice on the best way to go about getting a replacement, bonus points for any information in the Melbourne area.
    Thank you

I'd rather not pay the $459 or 459 or whatever to get the screen fixed by Toshiba. I've had 20 laptops before, I never cracked a screen like this so easily. I didn't drop the laptop nor bump it nor squeeze it, I just transported it in my hand baggage on the airplane as I always do with many previous laptops, the Z830 screen is too fragile. I really like the screen, I like its matte finish, I like the thin and light magnesium form factor of the laptop, and swobbly screen does not bother me, except the design is just much too fragile, the glass surface of the LCD is not protected as it must be. I'm the one who video-blogged this interview with a Toshiba representative about that nice design afterall: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_Cq07Ee89o
Since I don't want to pay the $500 repair fee, and since I guess Toshiba never replaces a cracked screen under warranty? I need to know if it'll work if I buy this screen: http://www.laptopscreen.com/English/model/toshiba/PORTEGE~Z830-S8302/ and I need to know exactly what screw driver I need and if there is a YouTube video and/or tutorial with detailed images and explanations so that I can hopefully safely make the screen replacement myself. And thus so that I can do it for about $100 myself instead of paying Toshiba $500 to make it.
I guess it'd be best if Toshiba actually sold that screen and the necessary screw driver to DIY change a broken screen (loose warranty is ok then), does Toshiba sell the screen replacement and screw driver for Z830/Z835?
I also tried http://screensurgeons.com/ and http://youtube.com/ScreenSurgeons/ but they don't seem to have made a video showing how to replace the Z830/Z835 screen yet.
If you look at the comments on this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMH0r76zdt0 about the Z830/Z835 teardown (only to replace RAM or SSD), there are several comments from users who also cracked their Z830/Z835 screen but I can't seem to find on YouTube a video showing how to replace the screen yet.
Thanks for your help. I'd like to buy that screen replacement soon, I need this laptop screen fixed before I go on a travel on October 11th.

  • Hello. Trying to replace broken screen on daughter's laptop. Laptop is an HP DV6T-7000 Quad

Hello. Trying to replace broken screen on daughter's laptop. Laptop is an HP DV6T-7000 Quad (bought in July, has the 3rd gen I-7 proc. and 610 graphics card). OEM screen is an LG LP156WH3(TL)(AC) according to the sticker on the back, which is a 1366 x 768 glossy. Would like to upgrade to the optional 1900 x 1080 full hd matte, which internet research leads me to think is model # LP156WF4(SL)(B3). Can anyone verify the part # and if it is just a screen swap-no new cables required? Thanks! Sid

  • I purchased AppleCare if I replaced my screen do I still have it?

I got my iPad 4 about 3 months ago from school I've been having a lot of problems with it overheating to the point it makes my palms sweaty and my son would complain that it was hot  and it freezes all the time on me while I'm doing home work or school work i called apple customer service they sent me to the apple store then they just updated it and restarted it went home and my iPad was still the same the next day I called again because it was still overheating another person just restarted it and said it was normal but I don't think it's normal so he told me to buy the apple are plan it covers technical problems which is $85.00 it does not cover cracked screens water damage just technical the next day my books must have broken the screen or the heat and all the heavy books did I spoke to my school Dan since I got it through the school he said he couldn't do anything about it to take it to a store down the block and they fixed it for $150 I took it there because AppleCare does not replace cracked screens and the closes store is 1 1/2 away from where I live they fixed it brand new but the overheating and freezing keep going I called again and the lady said that she would tell them to give me another iPad under my warranty because I'm still in my warranty period  she gave me a case number and everything just have to go to the apple store I went in today they looked at it told me they were going to give me the iPad but then denied it because I replaced my screen he said I'm having this problem because I replaced the screen I told him I've been having this problem for a while now way before the screen cracked I told him I have AppleCare he said it doesn't matter I told him what if I call the apple store because I live far from here he said even if the apple customer service people say to give me a new one they won't because they already denied my service and I can't get my new iPad from there and that  the apple customer service representative can't go above what they say once again I'm back to square one with an overheating and freezing iPad and yes I've tried everything lowering the brightness shutting it off at night everything......I just want to know if I bought the AppleCare for technical problems and my screen cracked and I replace it myself do I still have it?

I understand the whole warranty thing but I do have the hardware repair coverage from them since I've been having these problems and bought that before the screen cracked I read my warranty it doesn't say anything about what I'm asking that's why I asked because I know I don't have the warranty anymore I'm asking about the hardware repair coverage.........and I'm not trying to argue with you kappy I'm just stressed out with all this ok

  • Can I replace my screen affordably?

Hey, I was wondering if you could switch screens with a new macbook pro 2011 from the regular resolution glossy display to a hi-resolution glossy display?  I would obviously expect to pay a fee, but I was wondering if an apple store would do it for me and if it would be affordable.

Only way Apple replaces a screen is when it fails under warranty. And the replacement part is identical to the original. As for prices, the screen represents about a third of the price of the portable, or more.
Best bet would be selling your Mac and buying a new one. Heard of eBay?

  • X220 Screen Color Problem

Hi have a serious issue with my X220 IPS screen.
after replacing the screen under warranty (flickering) everything was working perfectly.
Then after a couple of month I took my x220 out of my carry on luggage and a band of about 5 cm on the right side of my screen was behaving weirdly (at the beginning it was intermittent but it became soon a constant, stable, problem)
Better than any description you can see the problem by looking at these images:
    Figure 1
    Figure 2
Figure 3 (Good part of the screen)
Figure 4 (Bad part of the screen)
Looks like some of the dark colors are inverted...
What do you think the problem is? LCD panel? Connector cable? MotherBoard? Graphic card(Integrated intel)?
looking forward to hear your opinion and SOLUTION!!!
    Thanks
    Andrea

It's actually not problem of IPS screen, but the problem is with the original non-IPS screen. Lenovo's screen is severely blueish, it has a very bad color accuracy. If you are adopted to the original screen, you will find IPS is warm and not accurate. But I can assure you if you search for benchmarks about the IPS screen, it is a perfect screen in terms of color accuracy. Although not as good as Apple IPS, it has the same level of color accuracy.

If your iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad is Broken
Apple does not fix iDevices. Instead, they exchange yours for a refurbished or new replacement depending upon the age of your device and refurbished inventories. On rare occasions when there are no longer refurbished units for your older model, they may replace it with the next newer model.
ATTN: Beginning July 2013 Apple Stores are now equipped to do screen repairs/replacements in-house on iPhone 5s. In some cases while you wait. According to Apple this is the beginning of equipping Apple Stores with the resources needed to do most repairs for iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches that would not require major replacements. Later in the year the services may be extended as Apple Stores become equipped and staffed with the proper repair expertise. So, if you need a screen repaired or a broken screen replaced or have your stuck Home button fixed, call your local Apple Store to see if they are now doing these in-house.
You may take your device to an Apple retailer for help or you may call Customer Service and arrange to send your device to Apple:

  • Glossy vs. Matte Debate

Having upgraded to MBP C2D with matte screen from MacBook Glossy screen I have a few observations. First, the matte screen is not as bright, but it does offer a better view from all angels, and for sure it does not get as dirty - it has been 4 days and the screen looks new. One my old Glossy MB the screen showed every smudge, dust speck, and had poor side viewing, plus you had to tilt screen to get best view. I love glossy, but wow matte ain't bad.

That is what I want to know before I buy: Which
screen is technically/operatively superior in it's
color display. My "preference" is for the superior
    quality, not the perceived quality.
Can anyone provide that baseline information?
I feel the same way you do in regards to the subjective posts about the difference in displays. I work in post production and see alot of monitors and footage. I now have a Glossy MBP C2D and I have access to a Matte MBP CD. I've done a side by side comparison of these two very good screens.
On the same calibration setting (color LCD standard) Glossy has a higher kelvin temperature giving it a cleaner white look slightly bluish if you view them side by side. Glossy also has a slightly darker black. Because of the way Matte scatters ambient light it gives off a slight bit more color saturation on some content. Glossy does perform brighter than the matte display. Viewing angles are identical on both.
If you use specs, not opinion in your decision.
    1. Glossy has higher contrast (regarded by many as the most important picture element)
    2. Glossy has the brighter display.
    3. Glossy has slightly better color saturation.
All top features of the best picture/image. As far as concerns regarding color accuracy. I haven't put any bars or graphs up to them this is just what I see right away. Both can be calibrated/adjusted. But the viewing angles in laptop panels makes this a mute point. Both are of no use in a professional environment doing color correction. I wouldn't dare do CC on a laptop monitor and I have not met any Graphic Artists who don't have desktops to work on.
Now that being said, Glossy does give glare if bright light sources are behind you. In that regard matte wins. But people have been looking at glossy CRT TV's and computer displays for over 50 years. Now glare becomes and issue?
I don't work on rooftops or sport stadiums so glare was not a big issue for me.
"If gloss is better, why isn't there a gloss Cinema Display? Isn't this the top of the line TFT display? Isn't it considered the BEST flat screen for graphics use? That's what I've always heard."
There are true professional grade LCD monitors with a Gloss finish, for video Panasonic makes some very good one's as well as marshall. I can't remember if I've seen any sony's. Almost all Ultra High end monitors I've seen have been glossy.
To my knowledge Apple does not make LCD panels, nor do most computer makers. They buy them from samsung or toshiba like most of the industry then put their touch on it. Apple buys what it feels is best for it's customer base. I went to a large trade show and one of the manufacturers was showing their product (HD footage) on Apple Cinema Displays. Clearly it was not the best choice, as other manufacturers showcased their footage on high end (Glossy) monitors that looked stunning. Graphics may be different, when I work with graphic artist they use color profiles to make sure the printers print what they are looking at.
    Hopes this helps.

  • CS3 using screen res instead of tablet res

    Hey,
I'm having a problem where Photoshop is using screen resolution, instead of tablet resolution, for getting the data used to render the line.  This is affecting my work because I do things in pretty high resolution, and I'll draw a line when zoomed out, then zoom in and it will have a pixely edge.  Well, it won't quite have a pixely edge, but it'll use the screen pixel data to figure out where to render the line.
I attached the image below to show what happens when I draw the same line at various zoom levels.

I'm using an Intuos3 with Photoshop CS3 Extended on Windows 7 Home  Premium.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks.

Might be a Windows 7 issue.
