Replacing bash with dash or zsh as default shell
Now that initscripts are no longer default init system for Arch, it should be possible (if initscripts removed from system) to remove bash and replace it with other shell, right? On my system I have this:
:: autoconf: requires bash
:: automake: requires bash
:: ca-certificates: requires bash
:: cpupower: requires bash
:: dcron: requires bash

:: pacman: requires bash
:: pkgstats: requires bash
:: pm-utils: requires bash
:: shadow: requires bash
:: smartmontools: requires bash

(Note: I've removed packets requiring sh.)
Here's a complete list of packets depending on bash (110):

Do these packages (except initscripts) really need bash? Debian uses dash as its default shell, I think Arch at least need to offer a possibility for using shells other than bash as default.
Any thoughts?
Demon wrote:Why not? I'm just exploring the possibilities.
zsh is not completely backwards-compatible with bash (not that bash is "backwards" in any real way). There's always a chance that, without the bash interpreter installed, some utilities written in bash won't work properly. Also, sh in Arch is distributed in the bash package, so uninstalling it will pull those packages with it.
Demon wrote:But then packages not needing bash (autoconf, automake, gzip, unzip) should list only sh as dependency, not bash. Right?

Photoshop CS4 is replacing spaces in the filenames with dashes. How do I make it stop doing that?
in save for web? look at the options. probably set to unix file systems. you know that file names on the web (if that's your intended use) may not contain spaces, rigth?

Can no longer log in with ZSH as default shell
After the last few updates, I'm unable to log in with zsh in ANY terminal. Nothing in my configuration has changed since the problem started occuring. In fact, even removing my zsh configuration files has no effect and still won't log in properly. Any ideas?
Edit: solved this by removing a certain file called "history.LOCK" in my .zsh folder.

CLEAR :wa_tax.Hi ,
I think you are using the redundant selects to fetch the data from BSEG.
First select all the data into an internal table based on bkpf.
Now you can distribute the data into whatever tables you want using the loop,read-binary search and append statements..
Loop at it_bseg.
read it_bseg where
xxxxx
xxxxx
binary search.
append wa to it2_bseg.
endloop
This avoid several database fetches..

Backup DC past tombstone and need help replacing it with another DC with the same name and IP
Hey Everyone
We have a single domain in a forest with 2 DCs with AD integrated DNS configured. The primary DC with all the FSMO roles is a VM (Server 2008 R2) and the backup DC is a physical server (Server 2008 non-R2).
The backup DC's hardware is very old and has been giving us a lot of issues where the system would intermittently BSOD, freeze, black screen only etc. and as a result, the server was turned off for a very long time, definitely beyond the default tombstone
lifetime of either 60 or 180 days.
We want to replace this bad backup DC with another physical server which became available as a spare and is much newer and in a working condition hardware wise. We also wish to ultimately give it the same name (FQDN) and IP to basically make it an outright
replacement for the current bad backup DC.
My questions are:
1.) If we are in a position where the bad server could possibly physically boot and start the operating system and have network connectivity, will we be able to use DCPROMO as one would normally do to demote this DC, or will it have to be done forcefully,
while keeping in mind as I said that the DC is way past the tombstone lifetime period?
2.) If it has to be done forcefully, I am aware that the meta data needs to be cleaned up in AD on the working primary DC, although I have never performed such a process before. If this is done, are there any other things I need to look out for or do
before I attempt to replace it with the other server which I will set up wit the same name (FQDN) and IP, then add to the domain, and then lastly promote as per normal using DCPROMO?
I know we will have to upgrade the scema to 2012RM as the replacement backup DC will be running this newer operating system.
Anything else you wish to add or point out to me would be highly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Regards,
CTVHi,
I would suggest please do the metadata cleanup using the script and then remove object from below DNS console and then run the repadmin /syncall /Aed
https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/scriptcenter/d31f091f-2642-4ede-9f97-0e1cc4d577f3
Repeat running the vbs script till the wrong/unnecessary dc’s are removed.
Cross check the removal – dsa.msc [ad users and computers] > Domain Controllers OU
Adsiedit.msc
Expand domain partition, select OU=Domain Controllers, make sure only the necessary domain controllers are listed.
Delete the incorrect domain controllers.
Dnsmgmt.msc [Dns Management]
Expand the forward lookup zones\_msdcs folder
i. Make sure only the actual domain controllers are listed, delete wrong Alias recordsremove wrong name server records
ii. Select the container [forward lookup zones\_msdcs.domain.com\dc\_sites_\sitename\_tcp] > delete incorrect _ldap and _kerberos records are listed.
iii. Select the container [forward lookup zones\_msdcs.domain.com\dc\_tcp] and delete incorrect _ldap and _kerberos records
iv. Expand the [forward lookup zones\_msdcs.domain.com\domains\guid\_tcp] and delete incorrect _ldap entries
v. Select [forward lookup zones\_msdcs.domain.com\gc] – delete incorrect HostA records
vi. Expand the [forward lookup zones\_msdcs.domain.com\gc\_sites\sitename\_tcp] – delete incorrect _ldap entries
vii. Select the [forward lookup zones\_msdcs.domain.com\gc\_tcp] – delete incorrect _ldap entries
viii. Select the [forward lookup zones\_msdcs.domain.com\pdc\_tcp] – delete incorrect _ldap entries
Expand the forward lookup zones\domain.com folder
i.
Delete Host(A) records of dc’s which are non-existant.
ii.
Correct the NameServer (NS) records
iii.
Follow steps similar to ’ A ii ‘ >> ‘ A viii’
Dssite.msc [Sites and Services]
Expand the [Sites\Sitename\Servers] – delete incorrect server’s
B. Delete incorrect subnet configurations [Sites\Subnets]
Delete incorrect site links [Sites\IP] -
Satellite C850 - boot from DVD issue - want to replace Win8 with Win7U
Got a new C850-1JZ yesterday and am trying to replace pre-installed Win 8 with Windows 7. I did create the recovery media (3 DVDs).
The laptop is driving me "insane" as it seems to block any attempt to boot anything else other than Win8 on the preinstalled hdd.
1.) Inserted Win 7 Ultimate DVD and tried to boot, would not boot from disk.
2.) Loaded advanced boot menu and tried to boot from ODD, would not boot from disk it. (Options are LAN, USB, HDD, and ODD (assuming this is optical disk drive)
3.) Changed regular bios settings boot priority to boot from ODD first, then HDD, would not boot from disk.
4.) Learned there is a "security boot protection" mechanism enabled by default in the bios. Turned it off. Machine starts loading from ODD and says "Windows is loading files" then hangs. This is a MS original Win7 Ultimate disk from the Microsoft store, no scratches. Makes no sense. We actually have 2 of them, so I tried the other, same result.
5.) Thought screw that, let's just put the hard drive from the other computer (T61) in here then and do clean new setup another time. Replaced hdd with other sata hdd that has Win 7 ultimate installed and system configured. When booting from hdd, it says "No OS" found and reboots. When booting from ODD, it starts with windows is loading files again and then freezes.
What kind of other extra protection/virus blocker/stupid setting am I missing here? This is puzzling me. Thanks.*Thanks as***, that solves the problem.*
After 10 days Toshiba Support in Germany came back with the same answer.
Basically it seems the UEFI Firmware has some reference to Win 8 or the original OS and key and boat loader that is checks, and you cannot load anything else until you disable it by:
1) In the BIOS, disable "secure boot" mode
2) In the BIOS advanced settings, switch from UEFI to CMS mode.
Then you should be able to install anything as the new OS.
Also, if you want to write down your product key / serial number , since it is not printed anywhere (e.g. no sticker on the bottom of the laptop) [Belarc Advisor - Free Personal PC Audit|http://belarc.com/free_download.html] is a good tool to retrieve this from the registry and write it down.
As far as I know it's "glued" to this particular hardware, so not portable, but it might be a good idea to write it down in case you lose the system recovery disk but would want to re-install it with the original serial number. -
I have a late 2005 power PC G5 that I want to bring back to life. I need to replace the original hard drive, a Maxtor 250 GB Sata. Can I replace it with modern drives, SATA 5-6 etc?
I knew I should never get rid of my old G5's. By the way, there is a browser still supported for the PPC, TenFourFox, if you're not using it already. Go to the Floodgap website (they author it) download it for free. The only thing it doesn't support is the Flash plugin, but the browser works great. Other video types are supported. It's based on Firefox, and runs most of the plugins and add-ons. It's very fast, and beats all other browsers on the browser compatibility and speed test. That's now my default on my G5's. Firefox and Safari are no longer supported. As far as the OS, both Tiger and Leopard were solid for me. The reason, as I stated before, was iMovie. The version in Tiger with iLife was far superior to what Apple changed it to. They 'dumbed it down' for the masses. Even the newest iLife 11 on my Mac Pro quad isn't is good, in my opinion. So Leopard should be fine for you. It's a much larger browser in terms of sheer megabytes and disk space, but it's fine. As far as getting an OS disc, I'm seeing Tiger for about $45.00, Leopard for $50 - 60.00 on that famous auction site. As far as RAM, I have 8GB in my G5 2.3, but you should check Activity Monitor when you are running your apps. See how much green slice you have left (unused RAM). You might find you don't need eight. A Mac Pro will grab more free RAM than a PPC machine will. I have a hard time maxing out use of my 8 on the PPC. Not true with the eight on my Mac Pro. The OS doesn't hesitate to grab and use it. You might be OK with 6GB on your PPC. More will not make you faster, as long as you still have free RAM available. As far as backup on your resurrected machine: look for a firewire enabled backup if can. Use CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) and make a clone backup. Next time your PPC machine wipes out the hard drive, just take your Firewire drive and plug it into another PPC machine, and you can select it as your boot drive. You'll be back and running in five minutes. You can also take the physical drive out of your enclosure, and put it in your tower to replace the failed drive, and you'll be back to where you were in less than ten minutes, OS and all. The PowerMac has an 800 port, so you can do the 800 on the machine to an 800 port on your backup. A firewire 800 to 800 cable is only about $8.00. It runs nice and fast through the 800 port. I like the OWC Mercury Extreme enclosures. They use USB, Firewire 800, and eSATA, so all your options are open.

We are having the TAXINJ at present.
But we want to replace it with TAXINN.
Shifting from TAXINJ to TAXINN will be planned from certain date, say 01.10.2008
But after assigning TAXINN, we should be able to view all old documents which were in TAXINJ.
Is it possible to replace TAXINJ with TAXINN?

Can we replace OracleSytemUser with a custom user in ldap?
HI,
We have installed soa 11g and configured Microsoft AD as ldap provider.
I have couple of questions around this.
1. Can we remove the default embedded authenticator totally? If yes what are the things we should keep in mind?
2. We don't want hard coded users like "OracleSystemUser". Can we replace OracleSystemUser with our custom user, maybe assinging our user to OracleSystemGroup in our ldap.
Would appreciate any help.
Thanks
ManishThere are Office-type apps available for iPad.
Skype is also available for iPad.
Whether you, specifically, can completely replace a laptop with an iPad depends on what you use your laptop for. The iPad is not designed to completely replace a laptop. There are many things a laptop can do that an iPad cannot. Whether those limitations are an issue for you, depends on your laptop usage. -
Replacing library with template deletes portlet preferences
Hi,
If I have to deploy a new version of our portal, with changes to the
.portal file I have to make a dummy desktop from the .portal file, and
then say yes to replace library with template. If I do this however all
my portlet preferences are resat to their default values. Are there
anyway to avoid this, or another way to get the library updated with the
newest version, without having to make a dummy desktop.

I recently replaced iPhoto with Aperture. When I download pics into Aperture they are place in a file that's called "Untitled Project." When I downloaded pics from my camera to iPhoto they were put in a file that was named with the download date (YYYY MM DD). Can I do that with Aperture (as the download default)?
My apologies.
When I import I have an Applescript that stores the images in a year month day folder-project structure so I haven;t used the default Aperture behavior in some time. When I tested it out to reply to you I was doing it from the file system and it picked up the date from the folder. mea culpa.
Anyway the closest you can get is to have Aperture split the images by date. IN the Aperture preferences set the project split granularity
Autosplit into Projects
and then in the import window set
Automatically split projects.
This will give projects named Month Day, Year (ie: Mar 13, 2012) there is no way to change this
As I said I have a script that runs on import and sets up a structure like:
Of course many here will say not to name projects this way, that Aperture has the ability to sort by date and you're better off naming projects something more meaningful. For them that is true and it might be for you also. For me I like to store my masters this way, it works for the way I shoot.

Replace devfsd with udev from "testing"? [Y/n]
pacman -Syu keeps asking me this:
:: Replace devfsd with udev from "testing"? [Y/n] n
but im already using udev. why?um, again please? you mean i should just say yes? but why is pacman -Syu insisting on installing udev from testing (i have testing enabled but not prioritized in pacman.conf). this arch install of mine started from 0.72 (gimmick) so it is using udev (from current) by default.

Replace WRT54 with WRT600N, xp-vista problem
In the wired network are: XP (host) 1Vista 32 and 1 Vista 64.
With WRT54GS everything worked fine. I replaced WRT54GS with WRT600N. The VISTA32 and XP are working finne. The VISTA 64 does not see the router as computer anymore and also does not see the XP computer. The XP can not access the VISTA64.
Any ideas?Problem solved, The security settings in Norton detected that the router did change and prohibited the see and access.
BTW, if you have similar problems you can call up the drive attached to the router by entering \\WRT600N and see it, than map it. You mostlikely will have to enter the access user and password (default admin and admin if not changed)
Everything works fine now. -
Replacing hubs with switches help needed
I'm new at this so bear with me.
I have two LANs, 10.0.0.x and 10.1.0.x, connected via firewall/router with 10.0.0.245 and 10.1.0.5 address. Clients and servers are connected to hubs on both networks. I want to replace the hubs with 2960TT switches already purchased but not configured.
The 10.1.0.x Windows clients have a default gateway of 10.1.0.5 which is the firewall routing to the 10.0.0.x network which then has a default gateway of 10.0.0.253 to Internet.
I suppose I would like to get rid of the firewall but must I replace it with another routing device or can the switches themselves be configured to allow these two networks to co-exist? I need the 10.1.0.x clients to see the 10.0.0.x network and resources but not vice-versa.
I need help configuring the switches. Thanks!You could likely use your new switches as "drop in" replacements for your hubs with minimal or possibly even no configuration. However, to maintain distinct subnets, you're going to continue to need some type of L3 device, such as your existing firewall/router.
One issue you might have with your existing firewall/router is it might be performance challenged for traffic moving traffic between your two subnets. (Likely your Internet side is limited by your Internet bandwidth.) If there is a performance issue between your subnets, you might look at obtaining a faster L3 device to either replace your existing firewall/router or in addition to it. (The "in addition to" L3 device, could be an "inexpensive" L3 switch, perhaps the 3560-8PC, to handle LAN traffic, while your existing firewall/router continues to handle Internet traffic. Optimal physical configuration of something like the 3560-8PC with your new switches might be linking your two new switches on a VLAN trunk gig port and one switch to the 3560-8PC also on a VLAN trunk gig port. The existing firewall/router might then connect to the 3560-8PC on one of its 100 Mbps ports.)
