Replacing files (changing file path) and keeping playcounts

Hello!
First of all, sorry if this a little bit confusing, english is not my first language.
I'm thinking about moving my library and music files to an external HD, but I also would like to organize my music folders differently from the way iTunes does. I don't just want to lose my playcounts/last played info, but I know iTunes will not be able to locate the files if I change them.
Is there a way to make iTunes locate the new files and replace them while keeping the playcounts? Will I have do to this manually (one file at a time) or is there a better/quicker way to do this?
Thank you very much

First let me play devil's advocate... Is there a really good reason to go for a manual folder structure? iTunes and just about any other media player will catalogue your media and then it will know where to find things. You shouldn't need to use Windows Explorer to locate your music, so why does it matter?
That said, if you do want things your way then the you really need to automate the process of moving files and then reconnecting them to the library. Personally I dislike iTunes for Windows 40 character file & folder name limit and character substitutions. I have a custom layout that I used to use on my old iRiver that I'm reluctant to let go of, for example Comedy, Classical & Soundtracks all get their own subfolders, artists are broken down into A-Z folders etc. To make sure everything goes where I want it I use a custom version of my script ConsolidateByMoving. If you understand a bit of BASIC you should be able to customize my script for your own set of rules.
Note that you should still stick to the basic stucture of an iTunes folder containing the library files and inside it an iTunes Media folder containing the media in any layout you like. Keeping this overall layout makes backing up and migrarting the library simple. If you split the media folder from inside the library folder then transfers will often break the links between the library and the media.

  • How do I put a file in my path and chmod it +x?

I want to transfer karaoke files from my mac to my iphone (to use with karaoke anywhere). On a different message board someone explained how to do it, but I have no idea how to put a file in my path and chmod it +x; I know very little about computers.
If it helps, the explanation that I don't understand is in post 6 of the following thread: http://forum.joltsoft.net/topic/32/bulk-transfer/

    Create a subdirectory call bin
    mkdir $HOME/bin
Put the qsend php script in the bin directory. Make the qsend php script executable
    chmod +x $HOME/bin/qsend
Add the following to your shell initialization file (more on the name in a moment). You can use an editor such as nano from the Terminal, or Fraise (free download), or TextWrangler (free download)
    export PATH="$HOME/bin:$PATH"
About the initialization file. It will be either .bash_profile or .profile (NOTE: by default neither file will exist on your system, unless you created one in the past).
Because these names start with a dot, they are hidden from the Finder, so you will need to use the Terminal and the "ls -a" command
    ls -a $HOME/.bash_profile $HOME/.profile
If you already have a .bash_profile, add the export PATH="..." to .bash_profile
If you do not have .bash_profile, but you do have a .profile, then add the export to .profile
If you do not have either of those files, then create .bash_profile using nano, Fraise, or TextWrangler.
You can find out more information about bash shell initialization files using the command "man bash".
Once you have added your export PATH="..." command, quit the Terminal, and restart a new session, which will cause your bash shell to read the initialization file you just modified.
You should now be able to use your qsend script.

  • LSMW - source file from Logical Path and Files?

    Hi,
When specifing the source file (legacy data) you want to use to load from - you can choose a file from the application server.
For the application server file does anyone know is there anyway that you can use a logical path and file to represent this source file?
I do not see this option in LSMW and am surprised at this as it necessitates changing the LSMW in each target system.
    Thanks in advance.
    Kind regards,

  • How to open a file, change the name and write file

    Hi,
I want to open an existing .dat-file in Labview, manipulate the data and save this data into a new file with a different file name.
Though the name should be different I would like to use the old name and add something to it.
(In my programm the .dat file containes the date and time the data was
measured and I would like to keep this information in the filename.)
For example: the original title is file1.dat now I want to save it as file1_manipulated.dat
Is that possible? What is the best and easiest way to do it?
    Thanks a lot
    Chris

    Hi Mike,
    thanks for your help.
This will give me my path in string format. But to open a new file and then write my data into it, I need a path format (see right side of png)
    Is that right?
I attached a png, so you hopefully get an idea where this is going. (I know this won´t work yet)
I open a file and this filename depends on the date and time the data was recorded. So I can´t work with a stringconstant.
Sorry for this beginner questions - this stuff is absolutly new to me.
    Thanks in advance
    Chris

  • Is possible to start a music file (multimedia widget) automatically and keep it playing along all the chapter, not just the page?

I'd like to launch an audio file automatically, and keep it playing all along the chapter. Using the multimedia widget all I can get is a button to play/stop the file!!

See Re: Can I get audio (music) to play continuously through a chapter or section in iBooks Author?

  • How do I change the colour and keep the gradient?

I've downloaded an EPS from Shutterstock with a series of icons that look like buttons and would like to change the colour breakdown, but keep the shading/ button 'look'.
Please can you show me how? When I try to select a different colour breakdown of blue it turns grey and solid.

Thank you very much for your suggestion. Unfortunatly I have not managed to get that to work either - see above, when trying the change the path colour to another blue (in one place - the highlighted row only) it comes up grey in multiple places (see group and mesh changed above).

  • How can I REPLACE original RAW files with JPG's and keep my 'Develop mode' edits?

    An image describing my problem:
    http://i.imgur.com/hcqMYkv.jpg
    (Lightroom 5)
'edits' = Edits made in develop mode.
'CR2' = My RAW image file format.
I have existing CR2's with edits for them saved in Lightroom.
I want to replace the CR2's with JPG's, and do nothing else. I want those JPG's to inherit the CR2's edits, but I DO NOT want the edits to be permanently applied to the image.
If I export the CR2's (which have edits) to JPG's, the edits will be permanently applied to them. I do not want this.
If I export the CR2's to JPG's without the edits, I have no way of getting the edits back and will have to redo the work if I use that photo again.
Any solutions? I've been trying for a while and have no idea how to do this.
Q: Why not keep the CR2's?
A: I am uploading these files to an online host (S3) as my primary storage method and uploading CR2's takes way too long with my internet speeds. Furthermore, online storage costs money.
Q: Why not shoot with JPGs instead of shooting raw?
A: I do my initial edits with the raw files and then archive them as JPG's to save storage space. They won't be raw anymore if I apply future edits, but I still have the option of retouching them from the 'original' state and still have my old edits preserved.

Probably the best thing for you to do is simply use lossy DNG format (e.g. export as, or convert to..): raw data is re-formatted with jpeg compression (full-rez or reduced-rez), but all raw settings apply.
If you insist on trying to have a true jpeg file with (mostly) raw settings, then:
The simplest way I can think of to do it without a script or plugin:
    * Reset the raw photo (consider preserving things that don't translate well, like profile-based lens corrections and white balance).
    * Export jpeg
    * Un-reset the image (e.g. using edit history or pre-reset snapshot).
    * Sync settings from raw to jpeg (note: omit settings that don't transfer well, or that were not reset..).
    * Optionally: Delete raw
To automate/streamline would require a script or plugin.

  • How to turn a pdf file into excel document and keep original format

I Have an excel bid form that i use all the time ,then i convert it into a PDF  And once in a while i need to add something to it  I paid for acrobat but when i try to turn the PDF back into an excel document the format is changed , the columns are in the wrong places And it does not look at all like the original excell form is there any thing i can do to  fix this If not this will be useless to me  any help appreciated

A PDF does not contain any spreadsheet, word processing or page layout file format information.
    No "format", columns, rows, etc.
"When you create a PDF, you’re painting a picture. Your paintbrush is the is the result of a combination of the software used to create the source document and the software you’ve chosen to convert your source document into the universal electronic document format we all know as PDF.
Like the painter’s brushstrokes, each character, each line and each image is fundamentally independent, but they can interact with each other to produce particular visual effects. On the PDF page, objects are connected by a coordinate system and not a lot else. There’s no logical, semantic connection between the letters comprising a word; characters simply happen at a series of locations on the rendered page.
As originally designed, PDF is fundamentally a system for painting objects onto a page, plus a whole lot of other features we aren’t talking about right now! There’s no innate concept of words, sentences, paragraphs, columns, headings, images, tables, lists, footnotes – any of the semantic structures that distinguish a “document” from a meaningless heap of letters, shapes and colors. PDF is fundamentally about how the document appears on the page, not how it looks when abstracted from the page."

    help me

    Hello Laura,
most comments which I know say, the best would be to copy all your photos into a directory (with corresponding subdirectories) by help of a file manager. From there LR should find all your photos.
Maybe these - from former LR versions - may help anyway:

  • Changing Boot Drives and Keep Your Time Machine History

A problem with Time Machine is that it is specific to the target and backup drives.  Change one or the other and TM will want to do a new full backup. If you don't have enough space, it will delete your old backups. HOWEVER, this is a way to install a new boot (or other) drive that TM is backing up and get it to pick up where it left off doing incremental backups.  This is extremely helpful if you change your boot drive.  In my case, I moved from a HDD to an SSD but wanted to keep my history intact.  TIme Machine "knows" which drive to backup based on the UUID (unique drive identifier) so merely changing the name of the drive in the Finder won't do it.  You need to change the UUID in the latest backup of TM.
Note: This is not for the faint of heart or technically challenged. It also requires a mild knowledge of unix or at least the ability to follow instructions TO THE LETTER!  You will change the UUID from the Latest Backup in Time Machine from the "old" drive to the "new" drive thus tricking TM into thinking the new drive is the old drive and it will continue to do incremental backups of the new drive.  The technique described below was originally developed under OS 10.5 (and posted on the MAC OS HINTS 10.5 blog but I have just used it under Snow Leopard.  It might work for newer OSs but I haven't tried them.  I actually did 2 things: 1) Installed a larger TM drive and 2) installed a SSD as a boot drive.  I will post under a different title to provide information on installing a larger TM drive since putting that information here may be confusing.
You will need 2 Unix commands: xattr and fsaclctl.  xattr is included in OS 10.6 Unix shell but fsaclctl is not.  You will have to get fsaclctl from a version of OS 10.5 using the techniques described in the article posted below.  I had an old 10.5 disc and found it in: /sbin/fsaclctl at the root directory of my 10.5 hard drive.  I also performed the technicque described below logged in as root but this may merely logged in as an administrotor.
** How to change your boot (or any other) drive and get Time Machine to just pick up where it left off doing incremental backups and not do a full backup of the new drive:
    1) Turn OFF Time Machine
    2) Install the new drive
    3) Clone the old drive to the new drive (in my case HDD -> SSD) using SuperDuper, CarbonCopyCloner or even Disk Utility
    4) Make sure you have both xattr and fsaclctl commands installed
    5) Open Terminal
    6) Follow the instructions here:
    http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20090213071015789&query=time+machine +new+disc
Note: you may need to use the command switch "l" (the letter l) to see the ascii version of the UUID
    sudo xattr -l com.apple.backupd.SnapshotVolumeUUID my_partition
Note: Unix uses spaces (white space) as delimiters and is always case sensitive so if you have spaces in the name of your drives, you MUST put the drive name in quotation marks:
if the drive name is: My HDD then to list the contents of the drive in Unix would use the command ls thus:
    > ls "My HDD"
will list the contents of My HDD
(the command:  > ls My HDD (without quotation marks) will produce an error - no such file or directory)
When you've followed the above procedure and turned Time Machine back on, the first time TM may warn you that the disc has been changed and "someone may be trying to trick your computer" into using the new drive.  Answer: do the backup
I wish I could take credit for this brilliant technique but I just followed it and it worked for me. I also read the entire thread before starting.

The two drives are handled as separate drives, even if they have the same name.
In essence, the old backups are from a drive that's no longer connected; see #E3 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
