Replacing parts after a spill

What part(s) is likely most likely to be damaged from a coffee spill on a laptop keyboard? Also, is there an easy way to test the parts? The laptop is a white Macbook 2.2 core 2 duo.

I had this happen and it was about $800 in repairs. The main board, audio, and keyboard assembly will most likely need replacing.

  • Troubleshooting Logic and I/O board on A1370 11" MB Air after wine spill

    OK,
My wife spilled about 1/4 cup of wine on the keyboard of her MacBook Air. This is an A1370 (EMC 2471) 11" (Core i5 Mid 2011) model.
I have read the articles in this forum and others on what to do when you spill on one of these computers.
What I would like from this forrum is guidance/help/suggestions/best-guess on determining what I need to replace.
    Here are the details.
Directly after the spill, she tells me that the computer turned itself off, and would not come back on - no lights, no start chime, nothing.
I immediately took the back off the computer and mopped up what I could without completely dissasembling the system because it was late at night.
The next morning, one of the kids tried to start the computer (ya, I know that's bad and don't know why the **** he did it but he did). He "fessed up" later and said that when he pressed the power button the keyboard lights came on and chimed then went off and that was it.
I proceeded to take apart the computer, removing the battery, logic board, I/O board, airport, HD, etc.
I noticed that there was wine stain on the logic board and the I/O board and other areas and cleaned it all up with isopropyl and Q-tips.
I then gave the logic board and I/O board a very thorough wash with a cleaning spray by MG Chemicals called "Safety Wash II". Basically alcahol.
I scrubbed the two boards thoroughly with a soft bristle brush for about an hour, then I soaked the entire board in isoproyl alcohol bath for 2 hours then sprayed and scurbbed again until I felt that I got all the wine off.
I did notice a small amount of "purble" on two of the tiny contacts for the LCD connection on the logic board but could not remove no matter how much scribbing I did. The two contacts were number 3,4 if you are counting from right-to-left when viewing the logic board from the bottom of the PC, with the fan to the right.
After a good dry with a hair dryer and letting it sit a few more hours I put it all back together, crossed my fingers, plugged in AC and pushed the power button -- nothing happened.
I had an orange light on AC adapter so I let it charge over night. The next day the AC light was green and the backlight on the keyboard was lit. Tried starting and still nothing.
I took the back off again and disconnected the battery then plugged in the AC adapter. At that point the fan started spinning and I got the start "chime" but nothing on the LCD.
I disconnected AC and plugged in battery and noticed the same thing.
Now whenever I disconnect AC chord and reconnect it I get the chime with fan starting but nothing more.
Also, the backlight on the keyboard stays on all the time and the fan runs all the time if the batter or the AC is connected.
So, I am wondering what I need to replace?
    logic board?
    I/O board?
    keyboard?
    all of the above?
    Would appreciate guidance.

Zane is right, ....I used to repair laptops for years as well,.....diagnosing such things is FUTILE.
Lucky you there are are almost no parts IN the macbook Air. Its IO and Logic and thats really almost it.
Contact Apple for in shop full diagnosis and parts replacement,......youre not going to "diagnosis" nor "fix" it after a spill (without parts replacement) by any means.
Even if you had a BEST CASE spill.....corrosion and failure would ensue on average 7 to 20 days.......then kaput.
Spills turn the best computer repair person into what looks like (to the customer) dufus......WHY? ......because its a  "spin the wheel and GUESS where ALL the liquid went"
replace A......works ok for a week.....whoops, ..........oh yeah, theres a couple drops under under a solder connection on part B........replace that....

  • I spilled a little bit of soda on my keyboard ( more like big drops) and my computer won't turn on but it will still charge.  After i spilled it it kept trying to turn on and off by itself until i finally just shut it down

I spilled a little bit of soda on my keyboard ( more like big drops) and my computer won't turn on but it will still charge.  After i spilled it it kept trying to turn on and off by itself until i finally just shut it down.  Today i tried to turn it back on ( i spilled it last night) and now it won't turn on but when i plug it in the orange light comes on so it still charges.

TBF: You may have been lucky enough not to cripple your MBP immediately with your spill, but a spill such as you describe will have left obvious traces if you ever need to take your machine in for a repair of any kind. And as soon as evidence of the spill is found, any chance of the necessary repairs being performed under warranty will be gone.
Taking the machine in now to be cleaned and have the greasy parts replaced will be expensive, but doing so may save whatever remains of your warranty. For a price, Apple will restore the machine to like-new condition, and at the very least, you will then have a 90-day repair warranty on it. If you have significantly more time than that remaining on your original one-year warranty, and especially if you've bought the extended AppleCare Protection Plan, it would probably be worth taking the machine in to a Genius Bar for a look-over. Ask whether, if you have Apple clean and repair the machine now, your new-computer warranty and AppleCare plan will be reinstated afterward or whether all you'll have is the short repair warranty from now on. If the spill will negate your warranty and AppleCare even if you have Apple clean it, then the cleaning probably isn't worth paying for. But if paying for the cleaning will get your warranty and AppleCare reinstated, it may be worth doing.

    Hi:
Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03015537.pdf
The available fan/heatsink combos with HP part numbers can be found in chapter 3, on page 27.
In order to get the right one you need to know what hardware is installed in your PC.
Since it is a CTO (configured to order), there are no product specs available.
So it is incumbent upon you to know for example if your notebook has an Intel processor and a graphics
    subsystem with 2048-MB discrete memory.
Once you determine the right part number you need, you can order it online at the link below.
    http://h20141.www2.hp.com/Hpparts/Default.aspx?mscssid=2DE434CEF5B743168A44405770DB2EA5
If you want a second opinion on if you are choosing the right part, I will be happy to help once you describe the specs for your PC.

after coffee spill - can't find hard disk

    hi,

press power button and keep tapping "F10" as soon as the power light comes on
it will take you to the Blue color screen where you cna see system setup
look for "Diagnostic" option and Press right arrow key to select it
you'll find Primary Hard Disk self test - press enter to run it
you will come to know if the Hard drive is functioning
Safety Note - Do not try to take out any internal parts other than battery and adapter

  • I've read that Promise Pegasus2 series does not sell replacement parts. I'm buying the new MacPro but am concerned about spending $2K for storage that may break and cannot be fixed. What are others buying for storage for the new MacPro?

I've read that Promise Pegasus2 R6 thunderbolt 2 series does not sell replacement parts (no replacement parts for any of the Pegasus line). I'm buying the new MacPro but am concerned about spending $2K for storage (12tb version) that may break and cannot be fixed (am told that one must purchase a new unit if a part breaks). What are others buying for storage for the new MacPro? Thanks so much for your help.
Discussion about this issue at MacWorld.com:  http://www.macworld.com/article/2082783/first-look-promises-pegasus2-r6-thunderb olt-2-raid-array.html

I've used the original Pegasus R6 units for a couple of years now and have been very pleased with them.  On the two occasions I've had to call on their technical sujpport, I've found them readily available, knowledgeable, and very helpful.  In one case it involved the reset of a unit after a power failure at an inopportune time; in the other case it was a question about upgrading disk drives to higher capacities (1 Gb gto 4 Gb).  I was pleased to learn that their tech support people were in California and as good if not better than upper-tier AppleCare reps. The hardware itself has functioned flawlessly so far.

  • Replacement parts please help

After spending $200 on the wrong display card replacement...
Is there a place where a sole can go to find out what replacement parts are compatible with all the different versions of G5s?
    Thanks, Rick

Hello people and Thank You, you are the best.
I spent the weekend researching, based on your comments. And you are right, there are little choices. For me anyway. I have the first dual processor that came out (system profiler says "model: powermac7,2" - whatever that means).
There are no PCI-X cards and 2 AGP cards that would be an upgrade from the fried ATI 9800 I had.
Besides the ATI X800, I saw on Apple's site they still say the GeForce 6800 Ultra is needed for Dual link (will be needing) even tho it is discontinued and can't find anywhere. This card appealed to me because it does not have the ADC connector which I don't need.
So I guess I will get the ATI X800 and a $100 ADC converter so I can run 2 DVI monitors. So much for the G5s being "built for expandability".
    Am I missing anything?
    Thanks again, Rick

  • Replacement laptop -- after how many repairs?

When does Apple usually hand you over a new computer? Mine has been sent for repairs twice -- possibly three times -- and now it's going for another round to the Mac doctors.
Does AppleCare replace it after three repairs? Four repairs? I've had it for a little more than two years, and while for the most part love my MacBook, it's getting to be a bit weird how often it does go down.
So, is there a set-in-stone policy about it, or is it evaluated on a case-by-case basis?
    Thanks!

    Hi Spackles.
    I've heard a couple things.
1.) If you have to take it in 3 or more times you get a replacement.
2.) If you have to take it in 3 or more times for the same thing you get a replacement.
3.) If you take it in with either of the above situations and have all your paperwork and are really nice about it you'll get a replacement.
4.) It's at the Managers discretion.
I have read all these scenarios here in the boards from people that have said they've received replacements. So I guess #4 is really the answer.

  • Replace Part of DisplayName Using PowerShell

    Hello,
I am trying to replace part of a display name using powershell. For example, our display names look like this:
    "Lname, Fname/Department"
I'm trying to replace only the department, basically what is after the /, from "Information Systems" to "IT"
Here's what I have but it is failing:
    Get-ADUser "ex10testertesters" | % { Set-AdUser $_ -DisplayName ($_.Displayname -replace 'Information Systems$','IT') }
Error I am getting is below:
    Set-ADUser : replace
    At line:1 char:48
    + Get-ADUser "test" | % { Set-AdUser <<<<  $_ -DisplayName ($_.Dis
    playname -replace '/Information Systems','IT') }
        + CategoryInfo          : InvalidOperation: (CN=ex10tester...DC=company,DC
       =com:ADUser) [Set-ADUser], ADInvalidOperationException
        + FullyQualifiedErrorId : replace,Microsoft.ActiveDirectory.Management.Com
       mands.SetADUser
Can anyone assist in what the issue is? Thank you!

DisplayName is not a default attribute returned by Get-ADUser; you'll need to specify it.
    Get-ADUser "ex10testertesters" -Properties 'DisplayName' | % {
    $newDisplayName = $_.Displayname -replace 'Information Systems$','IT'
    Set-AdUser $_ -DisplayName:$newDisplayName

  • N93 replacement parts

Anybody know where I can obtain a replacement part for my n93.
I was at the beach one day and soon after my phone's display screen will no longer adjust to its physical position. I know what the problem is and need a replacement part. The part I'm looking for is the display screen to elbow assembly. There is a tiny lever that helps the phone determine its display's current physical position. This tiny lever was damaged by a grain of sand. Can anybody help?

  • Order Replacement Parts Online?

    On this site
    http://www.apple.com/support/imac/g4/
it states I can order replacement parts online, yet there is no link of any kind to do so.
I'm currently trying to order a new SuperDrive to replace the one that gave out (AGAIN). How do I go about ordering one?

You might also consider the LaCie DL DVD±RW Internal Drive with LightScribe 16x.
It is a bit priceier than the Sony but the Lightscribe feature is nice. The people at PowerMax say that any full size drive should work in the flat panel iMacs, however, support is a problem with some drives.
I checked on the Sony model you mentioned, but after calling Sony, I was less sure about compatability than I was before I called. They were no help at all, and didn't seem very interested in answering a few simple questions.
It's probably a good idea to stay away from the Pioneer drives since they are adamant that they no longer offer any Apple support, and all of their drivers, and firmware updates are windoze exe formats only.
After weeks of research, without a working superdrive in my iMac, the LaCie seems to be the best choice I've seen so far.
    Good Luck

  • Getting error in sdp94 " data partly after horizon" any suggetionu2026

    Hi gurus,
i have changed period in SBP and  in SE38 planning area initialization in variants changed  /SAPAPO/TS_PAREA_INITIALIZ ) , still getting error in sdp94 " data partly after horizon" any suggetionu2026
    babu

    Hi Babu,
Kindly check till when is the planning area initialized. Goto //msdp_admin, right click on the planning area---> Created time series objects. Check the date till when it is initialized. You can save the data only if it's in this period. In the planning book there may be dates after the planning horizon also in which case you can't save data.
    Thanks and Regards,

  • T400 case number and replacement part?

I have a clients T400 that has come out of warranty. His 160GB HD died. I called Lenovo first to make sure the machine was out of warranty, the tech advise me that is way and gave me the HD FRU number and the phone number to call to get a replacement.
My colleague called IBM and gave them the part number, they said the FRU doesn't exsist and got us the correct part number but said unless we had a case number from Lenovo the drive would be sold AS-IS. So if we bought it and for someone reason it didn't work they would not warranty or exchange the drive.
So my colleague called Lenovo back who said "We don't give case numbers out for machines out of warranty". It seems that IBM thinks differently. Lenovo also said there some way of creating a case on their website which will send me an email with the correct replacement part number...do you think I could find what they are talking about??? NO!
Has anyone had to deal this mayhem? It's like the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing....Plus it makes not sense to not properly help people who have OOW machines that are still fairly new.
I have thought of maybe getting the one of the big bosses at IBM on the phone to fight it out with the boss at Lenovo!
