Replies to mail is jumbled

When I send someone a forward of text (someone else's email) using Mail in Tiger and they reply back many of the characters and some of the spaces are jumbled and replaced with wierd letters.
I can't be sure that it is only from my end or whether they saw the same thing when I sent them the forwarded mail.
Any advice would be very appreciated.

Hi Tom.
Thanks for your reply. You helped me out a few weeks ago with a similar situation where the spaces I entered in my email text were seen as question marks on Outlook. I braved using the terminal (as I have read that there is no undo button and one should be cautious) and entered the UTF-8 statement you suggested and it worked perfectly.
In theory this should have fixed my currently problem. This time I have tried substituting the above statement with "Windows-1252" from your link you sent.
I will have to see if this works.
To answer your first question, I have found out that the receiver also sees it jumbled if I forward them something from a different user.
Thanks Tom.

• How to change font size for my replies in "mail" app?

for the record, I tried adjusting the font size in my replies in "mail" app via general > accessibility > larger text to the largest size - yet when I clicked on reply in the mail app, the font remained small, very small. please help!

If there are really only a few sites that you have problems with, just go to the site, and click the Command key along with the plus key. This will temporarily increase the size of the type.
Command and the minus(-) key makes type smaller. These commands will work on a per site basis.

• Duplicate email replies in Mail?

When I reply to someone and I look at the 'chain' conversation, all of my replies are shown twice on my screen, but the other person is only seeing 1 of them like they should. What's going on?

Can you figure why this is confusing Mail?
It seems to me that you are using an IMAP account and storing your messages on the server, but you didn't answer my question as to what type of account you had. IMAP accounts let you synchronize your messages between your Mac and the mail server so they each have the same contents. But you say you're getting duplicate messages, even though your mail provider only sees one--that doesn't sound right at all.
Have you tried rebuilding your Mail index for those accounts, and/or repairing permissions? If not, you should do that to see if the problem continues afterward.

• Hiding notes but showing replies in Mail.

I am trying to have a particular set up for my macbook, ipad and iphone in terms of mail and notes. I am using notes and mail for my gmail account and using them on my macbook using "Mail" and on the ipad and iphone using "Notes" and "Mail".
The problem is I want to see email messages as a conversation and not have it cluttered up showing all the notes. If I view the inbox in either macbook or ios mail it will hide the notes (on the macbook I have it hide the notes via a setting in preferences) which I want but it won't show my replies making it hard to following existing threads. If I use "all mail" it will show my responses but it will be cluttered up with notes which can be a real issue if I write a lot of notes and then try to check mail on my iphone/ipad.
So is there any way of showing my respones but not the notes in both the macbook and ios?

On your iPhone, from the Home page go into settings then Notes. Change your Default account to 'On My IPhone'.

• Showing replies in Mail

Hey everyone,
As a heavy Gmail browser user, I've overlooked Mail for quite some time. Having gotten an iPad recently, I thought I'd give Mail a go. There's one issue that's causing me to leave it for the Gmail app though. My issue is this:
When a reply is sent to someone, Mail does not display that reply within the Inbox e-mail thread - you will need to go to the Sent folder in order to see your reply. Is there a way to configure Mail so that replies are immediately available via the Inbox instead? This behavior is not simply on the iPad Mail application, but Mail on both iOS and OS X.
Thanks in advance to anyone that can provide some insight into this issue.
Edit:
In addition, I'm aware of the "Always Bcc myself" option via Settings - the problem with that is that it results in a separate e-mail instead of appending it to the current e-mail thread.

• Replies to Mail with Attachments in them

I have a question about replies I've been getting.
When I email with an attachment enclosed the recipient gets the email and the attachments
and then replies back. A lot of the time(in leopard) the attachments I sent are visible in the replied message.
so my question is: are these just links to my original attachments? or are the attachments coming back to me as well?
I'm thinking it's the former and if so can I turn this off?

Correction:
It appears only the alias address set up for that account is experiencing the problem but with the same Name spelling. replying to the direct gmail address works fine.
Náme O'Person <name_operson"@alias.edu>
Clicking Reply inserts this address: =?UTF-8?B?U2lvYmjDoW4=?= O'Person =?UTF-8?B?PHNpb2JoYW5fb3NoYXVnaG5lc3N5?="@alias.edu>

• Mail- message jumbling

Could someone please explain to me how a message from a friend on Facebook could have had its content replaced by the bill from my phone service provider/

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:
Envelope Index
ExternalUpdates.storedata
Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK. Warning: The process may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. For reasonable-sized mailboxes, it should only take a few minutes.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

• Automatic replies on mail

how do I set up an automatic (vacation) reply on Mail?

Do it through your mail service provider. For example, iCloud, via the web interface, has such an option under Preferences. Do not attempt to do it within the Mail application. The complications and pitfalls are numerous and severe. If you set up a vacation reply at all, it needs to be done on the server.

• Mail replies won't send in OS 10.8.3

Replies to mail messages that have a link within the message won't "send" unless I delete the link and any other messages beneath the message I am replying to . Message hangs up in activity window . I've checked with my ISP and all is fine there. My older iMac running OS 10.6.8 mail works flawlessly . What is going on here? New messages "send" o.k. So I'm clueless and bummed about what appears to be some mail glitch on ML.
Also, what is this new "envelope shaped" mail format with the blue border ? Is there some option to change the format back to the regular " letter shaped" mail format ?
Thanks for any help !
Carolyn. a.k.a. gladys2

So far, no big change, but I have figured out how to circumvent the problem by just deleting anything I'm replying to other than the last message in a group of "back and forth" mail. (if that makes any sense). Its a minor hassle, but I'm not willing to risk messing up things by getting into areas where I'm not comfortable.... like messing with the Library.
I did run Repair Permissions a couple of times after I had tried everything else that was obvious, shut down, unplugged and restarted. I also sent an e-mail to Apple support and told them what I thought about Mail in ML.
It comforts me somewhat to see that there are a lot of folks out there with the same type problems, each with variations on the theme ! :-)
I do appreciate all you suggested. If you come up with any other easy ideas, let me know. You are a good guy to show concern and try to help !

• IPhone replies via Exchange 07 display secondary Exchange mail alias

The setup:
Exchange 07 server with SAN SSL cert.
Company Prez has iPhone running 2.x, configured to his OWA settings, and it's been working happily since December.
Did he upgrade the unit's firmware to 3.x yesterday? Unknown.
Whichever the case, here's our symptom. When he replies to mails, the outgoing mail shows his reply-to address as "[email protected]" instead of "[email protected]" like it used to do.
Worse yet, Prez says creating new mails now shows the full range of Exchange SMTP aliases for him to choose a Reply-To address from. There are about a dozen. The primary domain is indeed set as the primary address on the Exchange server. There are no OWA or Exchange rules affecting his Reply-To (such as Junk Mail, spam or Out Of Office settings.)
Apple discovered a similar bug yesterday with the Calendar invite sync. (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2806)
How can I set the Prez' iPhone to always create and reply-to mails using his primary account, as before?

I'm having the same issue. I'm surprised that there isn't more information on this problem. Any help would be appreciated.

• New user of Mail

After many many years of using Eudora I have moved to using Apple Mail. The main drivers for this were better handling of html content messages, long attachment names, integration with address book and a more standard mail format.
Overall I think this has been a good move but have noted one or two deficiencies and features in Apple Mail that I just plain miss.
Apple should be upfront about “import mail” and Eudora. I am very very glad I read about Eudora Cleaner before losing very valuable information about replies, unread mail, dates etc etc
When in "message viewer" with a list of a mailbox contents, it would be really useful if typing a first letter took you to the first mail in that mailbox whose sender name starts with this letter. The finder does it (selects the first file in the current folder starting with that character) - why is Mail different?
The window menu displays the open mail windows by subject name only – it would be much better if included the sender’s name. I tend to look for open mail windows for the sender in preference to the mail subject.
The spell checker guesser is weak. MS Word spell guesser is way more powerful. E.g., complains about “don’t” but does not offer “don’t” as an option. It does not appear to offer learned-spelling words as options either.
When dragging/transferring mail to a nested mailbox, the destination mailbox must pre-exist. I like the Eudora feature of being able to create a sub-folder and/or mailbox as part of a drag/drop.
Can you open Mail so that it overrides the automatic checking (and download) new mail. Eudora had a shift-open sequence that did that. very useful sometimes?
Smart mailboxes are good and useful. However, I found it odd that deleting a message from a smart mailbox in fact moves it to trash not just out of the smart mailbox. I had a picture that smart mailboxes contain aliases to mail, in much the same way as albums in iPhoto, so that removing them from the smart mailbox doe sonly that and does not move them to trash.
Fonts and font handing is clumsy. Something to handle fonts/bold etc on the toolbar would be great.
It is not very clear when someone has sent me a Bcc mail. Such mail is often the most sensitive and care must be taken if replying (especially to all). I realise that a Bcc mail has ben sent if my name is not in the header. But that means me looking for an omission rather than looking for an inclusion in a Bcc header.
Why am I stuck with having my mail folder icons on the LHS in alphabetical order. I’d prefer the flexibility to arrange in an order that I want.
Are any of these idea being considered for later versions?
Cheers
Dave

Hi David, it is very nice of you to share, comment and provide feedback about Apple's Mail here with us, but this a mainly a Discussion forum to provide any form of help needed, and I really doubt anyone "important" to affect the next Mail's upgrade and improvement would take it from here, you should post your feedback etc at Mail's Feedback (page) to Apple.
Nevertheless, I would agree with you on some points on Mail, which of course needs a lot of work to make it better, but probably not perfect, I don't believe there will be any 1 perfect sole email program out there, at least not now.
Here I would like to clarify, and answer some of your points that you probably didn't know or notice and is like a "hidden" feature that is there all along:
I am presuming you are using a Mighty Mouse, or at least, some of these features require you to Right-click (to bring out a short contextual menu) or Command+Click (or is it Ctrl or Opt key...), anyway...
1. The window menu displays the open mail windows by subject name only – it would be much better if included the sender’s name....
I don't really get this one, every mail you click displays on the right "bottom" shows the Subject first, but definitely the 'Sender' also. And you can customise the Column View to whatever preference you like.
And by the way, do you know you can customise the Top Tool Bar in any way and form you like, just the way you customise any Finder Window?
Go under View > Customise Toolbar, and you can do anything you like to personalise the way you use Mail
2. The spell checker guesser is weak. MS Word spell guesser is way more powerful. E.g., complains about “don’t” but does not offer “don’t” as an option. It does not appear to offer learned-spelling words as options either.
Rick-click your Mighty Mouse or with a normal mouse, Control (key) + Click, and a short contextual menu pops up, there is a Learn Spelling option to learn this new word.
3. Fonts and font handing is clumsy. Something to handle fonts/bold etc on the toolbar would be great.
Right-click your Mighty Mouse again to choose Font options, select "bold" etc, faster way, before you type the next work you want it to be "bold" or "italic", use Command key + b (for bold) or + i (for italic), this I think actually applies universally across board like Microsoft's Entourage and even Word. Or you can highlight the word then hit Command + b; Repeat the combination keys again to return your type font to normal.
This one I am also a bit confused; When someone send an email and Bcc to you, and any other party, you can only see the names of those appear in the 'To' and 'Cc' fields, not in any 'Bcc' field, i.e. this mail does not has your name on it, if you can see a 'Bcc' field, doesn't that defeat the purpose of a Bcc, that you would be able to see other people's names on the Bcc field as well??
I point this out is because I use Entourage in the office, and it more or less behaves or "act" the same way as Mail, both have their strengths and weaknesses...
Cheers

• Setting the From Address for Reply in Mail

I am having trouble setting the default “From” address for replies in Mail. When I click on “Reply” the new window opens with a default mail address I do not wish to use. This can be changes by going into the drop down box and setting a different one. This is time consuming and it is easy to send from an inappropriate address.
“Help” menu says that the default address ( top one in the drop down box) can be changed and gives these instructions:
Set the From address
Your messages are sent from the account of the currently selected mailbox. If you have multiple email accounts, you can specify a different account to use for sending all messages, or select an account just for the message you’re writing.
To specify the account to use for sending all messages, choose Mail > Preferences, click Composing, and then choose an account from the “Send new messages from” pop-up menu.
To specify an account just for the message you’re writing, click the From pop-up menu, and then choose an email address.
To change the order in which addresses are listed in the pop-up menu, reorder the addresses in the “Email address” field in the Account Information pane of Mail account preferences.
When I open the Mail Account Preferences and go to Account Information there is no list of addresses in the “Email address” just the one for the particular account highlighted in the left column eg. “[email protected]” or “[email protected]” .
I tried to move the order of the accounts in the left hand box but nothing wants to move. Clicking and holding to push one account over another seems not to work.
Anyone got any ideas on how to fix this?
NB: This is about "Reply". Default for "New Message" is setting fine.

i found out how to do this finally!
1) set up google gmail account to forward your emails to (from the [email protected])
2) go to your gmail account
3) go to settings (cog in right hand corner)
4) go to 'accounts and import'
5) go to 'send mail as'
6) click 'Add another email address you own' - add your [email protected] address
7) google will send a verification email with code to that email address.
8) enter code
9) go back to gmail account >'send mail as' and select 'make default'
10) close mac 'mail' program and reopen it.
as long as you have gmail account selected as the primary account in MAIL - mail will now come throught as being sent from that [email protected] address!!

• What are these options for in Mail preferences?

1)compact mail automatically
2)in composing, increase quote level ( what is quote level and what is it for and what is quaoted text?)
3) general preferences for mail...add invitations to iCal. How do you implement this option?
Thank you
Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Compact mail means to compress (shrink) the files on your harddrive containing your mail.
Increase quote level is quite easy. It has to do with replies to mails. Imagine, you would reply to a mail from me. Mail.app would quote this text:
Here is my quoted text
Another line from me
Now, I get your reply with my quoted text. If I would reply to you, the text would get
Here is my quoted text
Another line from me
This was your reply
So, with each reply the ">" increases. That way you can easily follow a conversation.

• Mail mixing up sending between my 2 different email addresses

I am using two different mail addresses, one a gmail address which I us for private mails, and one my corporate address.
The latter is also with Gmail, through Google apps.
Both have the same outgoing smtp, namely smtp.gmail.com
Now when I want to send an email I check from which address it is sending my mail.
Still I get replies from mails sent with my corporate mails back to my private mail address.
Asking a co worker, he confirmed that he receives my mails from my private address, even though I carefully checked that in the "from" it shows my coporate mail address.
Does anybody have had the similar problem, and found a solution?
