Reporting on a MS Access Database

Hello All,
Here is what we want to achieve. Business in the short run wants to do their reporting on a MS Access Database.
This Access database sits on a shared secure Windows network drive.
Our server is a Solaris box. Will ODBC work fine? Also how do I create a DSN on the Solaris box for the Access Database?
Do I also need a Access driver on the Solaris box?
Thanks!!

what ever i know, the drivers under the odbc folder supports to create odbc connection to BI server. I am not sure about that folder containing Micorsoft Access Driver.
On the top of my head, i did not remember the syntax. May be you need to mention database=file path.
Here is a link for a product, which works with gui to create DSN in Unix based systems, This support Access DB in Unix.
http://www.unixodbc.org/
If you are not interested to use this product, just install it and create DSN to Access Database and look for OBDC.ini for what changes it made. and use those syntaxes. Remove the product from machine.
thanks

    "Database Connector Error:"
    does anybody there whose got an idea with this problem?
    Im using VB2005 and im trying to show a report using CR XI with a Ms Access database...
    Whenever i used a CRAXDRT.Report.SQLQueryString? my application has an error "Database Connector Error"
    but whenever i omit this single line of code CRAXDRT.Report.SQLQueryString?
    crxReport.SQLQueryString = "Select * from tblPersonal where EMP_ID like '0%'"
    Or either i replace it with a CRAXDRT.Report.RecordSelectionFormula?
    crxReport.RecordSelectionFormula = "{tblPersonal.IDNo} like '*'"
    it works fine and it show the report and data...
    But?? i have to use more flexible filter condition like "SQLQueryString" like using LEFT OUTER JOIN or even just a simple query string in sql query...
    but using "SQLQueryString" gives me a head ache to figure it myself... I got this frustrating error in my application... "Database connector error"
    thats why i need help... please anybody has a good idea to resolve this problem "Database connector error" please refer to my code if there's something missing or lacking in my code...
    Here's my sample code:
    Private Sub frmCrystalReport_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
    Try
    ChildFormAutoSizeFit(Me)
    Me.Cursor = Cursors.WaitCursor
    Me.MdiParent = frmMain
    crxApp = New CRAXDRT.Application
    crxReport = crxApp.OpenReport(reportPath & "\EmployeeRecord.rpt", CrystalDecisions.Shared.OpenReportMethod.OpenReportByDefault)
    crxDataBase = crxReport.Database
    crxTables = crxDataBase.Tables
    For Each crxTable In crxTables
    crxTable.Location = DataSource
    crxTable.SetLogOnInfo("Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data source=" & reportPath, "myEmpDB.mdb", "UserName", "myPassword")
    Next crxTable
    'Note1: this line crxReport.SQLQueryString gives me the headache "Database Connector Error"
    crxReport.SQLQueryString = "Select * from tblPersonal"
    'Note2: this line crxReport.RecordSelectionFormula works fine
    'crxReport.RecordSelectionFormula = "{tblPersonal.IDNo} like '*'"
    AxCRViewer1.ReportSource = crxReport
    AxCRViewer1.ViewReport()
    crxDataBase = Nothing
    crxTable = Nothing
    crxTables = Nothing
    crxReport = Nothing
    crxApp = Nothing
    Catch ex As Exception
    MsgBox(ex.ToString())
    Finally
    Me.Cursor = Cursors.Default
    End Try
    End Sub
    Please anybody there who can resolve this problem or even just a good idea to share?? Please...
    A lot of appreciation to someone or anybody who can help with this... thanks in advance....

    You may want to move/ask this question in the "Other" sdk forum since this is not the CR.NET SDK, but actually RDC/COM SDK.
    You are using the RDC in .NET, which is unsupported/untested so there is no way to know if it is a .NET specific issue or an issue with the RDC.
    One of the COM folks may be of more help in that forum.
    Good luck with your project.

  • Can't Open Reports in a Microsoft Access Database

    I have a problem. I want to open a report in my microsoft access file in design form, but MS Access doesnt open this report. I dont get any error message, and without freezing.
    I have no problem with other report files, but for a special report I have this problem. How can I solve this problem?

    Hi Babak.per.
    How did you create this report? Would you mind sharing a sample database to help us to troubleshoot this issue?
    You can upload it via OneDrive. And please remove the sensitive information before you upload.

  • Trying to connect to an Access database

    Post Author: robert693

    Hello,
    I am trying to use Crystal to create reports out of an Access database. When I try to connect to the database thru the database expert, I go to Create Connection and choose Databse Files. I choose a database that is in My Documents. I get an error that says "Failed to load database information," and then "Unknown Query Engine Error." I was wondering what I have to do to connect to the Access database.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    I connect to Access by first creating an ODBC connection to it and then have crystal use the ODBC.

  • The Microsoft Access database engine cannot open or write to the file in Report Builder 3.0

    I am trying to build a report in Report Builder 3.0.  I created the Data Source to point to my Excel file and the Data Set.  I drag a couple of fields on to the canvas and then choose Run.  I get the error:  "The Microsoft Access

    No, now I am getting the error message again.  It is quite long:

  • Is it Possible to upload the output from Oracle reports To Access database

    Hi All,
    Wish you All a Very Happy New Year.
    I have a query.Is it possible to
    upload the output from the Oracle reports
    to the Access database???
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    TIA
    sg

    Hi sg,
    Research the DDE option.
    Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) is a mechanism by which applications can communicate and exchange data in Windows.
    I have imported data into the excel spreadsheet using DDE built in functions. I am sure it can work with MS Acess as well. If not, then you need to create a 2 step process .. reports -> excel -> access.

  • Create separate PDF files from MS Access Database report field

    In the development or update of pipe specifications the valve specifications (database records) that are associated with the piping specification are updated or corrected.  These revised valve specifications are then exported as a group through the Access Report Print to PDF file with the piping specification name for the file name.  Each separate valve specification within this single file needs to have its own PDF Valve spec file name so that each valve spec can be attached to project engineering documents or for purchasing.  All of the valves are coded in the in the database and projects with this general description, V-?????? with each question mark representing a descriptive part of the valve.  MS Access database has this V-?????? field name for every valve record in this large database.  The current practice is extract from the single PDF file page thumbnails and rename every extracted file.  With over 1000 valve records being updated, the task is time consuming.

    These are the settings.

  • Crystal Reports and Access database connection error

    I had this in a different forum with no hits, so I am trying this one.
    A person that I work with has multiple reports set up that pulls from an Access database that is password protected. When we moved everything over to a new computer, those reports now say that it cannot access the fields inside the database. It never pops up with a login screen either, like it does on the old computer. I played around with the ODBC, with no luck, couldn't get anything to work. I have also tryed relinking the database, but I keep getting connection problems. We are on a network, so her settings should have all moved with the new computer. Along with the database and the reports being on the server, so they were never moved. I am thinking it has something to do with a system file.
    I also found this document on this site, but cannot find the download it mentions, sounds similar to my problem.
    https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/208b8fe5-681e-2b10-d2bb-b201f266d0ab
    Does anybody know how to fix this without the utility mentioned in the above link, or know where I can get the utility??
    We are using Access 2007 and Crystal Reports 7.  The database is not save as an Access 2007 database, but a regular mdb.

    CA Forum: Crystal Reports
    Hello Chris,
    Crystal Reports does not store the database password with the RPT file.  This is by design (Crystal is not a database security product).  This is true of all versions of Crystal Reports.
    If your users need to see fresh data when opening the reports then they will have to log in by providing at least the password.
    You can send reports with Saved Data that won't try to hit the database, but the data won't refresh either.  To save data with the report go to the File menu and click next to Save Data with Report.  Refresh the report and then save it.  The report will now have saved data and won't try to hit the database when opened.  If the user hits the refresh button then they will get prompted to log into the database.
    I hope this helps.

  • Business Objects Enterprise and publishing Access Database reports

    Hi,
    I have searched the forum but cannot find anything to help me so any help would be appreciated
    I have an access database on a shared drive that I want to publish a report for.
    On the BO server I created a system DSN to the database through a mapped drive.
    I use the publishing wizard to configure the report but I am getting the following error when I try and run the report:
    Unable to connect: incorrect log on parameters. Details: [Database Vendor Code: -1023 ]
    I have also gone in on the Business View Manager and created the connection and it connects successfully.
    I have successfully published Sybase and SQL reports but I just cannot get the connection to the Access Database to work.
    Thanks in advance,
    Sinead

    Try using UNC to point to the database.  In other words,
    servername\sharepoint.
    Also, make sure the service account of the server processing the report (I don't think you mentioned what type of report it was) is running under a domain user account that has access to the share (rather than the default local system).  You can set this in the CCM.

  • Sub reports access database multiple times

    Hello,
      I have a crystal report created with a main and 2 sub reports. The data source is a stored procedure. when ever I ran/refresh  the report it access the database 3 times(first for main report and 2 times for 2 sub reports).
      There is a big single query been executed and stored procedure returns the result. Even though the result set is same the report should not access database multiple times.
       Is there any options or properties I have to select or missing. Is there any solution to resolve this connectivity issue.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    Each report will each have their own separate connection to the database.  In your case it will create 3 connection: one for the main report and one for each of the subreports.  If you use sureports, there's no way around this.
    Also take into account where the subreports are on the main report.  If you have them in the detail or group sections the subreports will generate a new instance each time it runs.  So you may have not 3 connections but one for each record or group in the report.
    I've had to design similar reports and needed to do it without subreports.  I wrote a stored procedure that generated two sets of records: detail and summary.  I grouped the data on the report based on their record type (Detail or Summary).  I found this also made the report faster.
    Good luck,
    Brian

  • Web-Intelligence Reports against Access Database

    We are unable to run Web-Intelligence reports against Microsoft Access Database which resides on a network drive
    Able to create Unvierse, and Universe Connection to the Access Database through ODBC, but unable to run Web-I reports, when tried we get the following error
    A database error occured. The database error text is: [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] '(unknown)' is not a valid path.  Make sure that the path name is spelled correctly and that you are connected to the server on which the file resides.. (WIS 10901)
    Did anyone tried to develop Web-I reports from Access database on a network drive, if so I request you to provide us details and your findings
    Thank you

    We run the designer on the same machine where BOBJ runs and also on other client machines, from disigner it works fine,
    The service account which is used to run BO Application Services has full control access to the network location and folder where the database resides
    We can run / refresh Desk-I and Web-I rich client but cannot run web-i reports against access database
    Thanks

  • Report with Access Database or TXT file

    Dear All,
    I was wondering if someone can help me with the following issue.
    We have created a Crystal Reports XI report which has a Access MDB or Plain Text file as source data (2 different reports; one with MDB connection only and the other one with a Lotus Notes ODBC connection and TXT file).
    The report runs correctly locally and it also runs correctly on the server but as soon as I post the report via the repository folder to the server, it does not work anymore.
    Viewing the report via InfoView gives me a password request while both, the MDB and TXT file are not password protected.
    We have tried to make system DSN and file DSN connections to both the MDB and TXT file but also this ends with a password request which is not defined.
    Did anyone came across this as well? Any idea about a solution?
    Thank you in advance,
    Annique.

    Hi Annique,
    Since this works in CR Designer I'm moving your post to the Business Objects forum.
    It's likely due to BOE servers not having access to the data sources. Make sure you put them in a folder that the WEB server and BOE Servers have access to. To prompt for log on is because we can't find the data files.
    Thank you
    Don

    There are some other solutions possible.
    1. Get another driver. The only one known is java only so it wont crash. But is not not free.
    2. Use a proxy driver. That means that another app actually does the database work. If it crashes you just start it again (which you can do in your main code.) That way it won't take down your server. There are commercial jdbc drivers that claim MS Access but are are really just proxy implementations as an option in this area.
