Request password to wake computer  - lock

Hi folks.
was trying to "secure" my MB since i carry it around with me everywhere and there a lot of personal and research docs i don't want to turn public.
i turned on the "require password to wake up this computer" option, but for some strange reason it turns it self off every now and then without explanation or warning. i tried to activate the "require password to make changes on this pane" option *but it leaves this option unlocked!!!*
so the infrared receiver is a top security option but requiring a password to wake the pc isn't?!!? give them NORAD control...
does anyone know some obscure temrinal command to change this and lock that option for good?
also could you please show me how to let apple know of this completly imbecile behavior and design? first mac ever so still a bit lost here.
thanks alot for your help

this box certainly should not become unchecked by itself. I don't know what could be causing this. there is no good way to lock this option. the only thing I can think of is the following. check that box in system preferences. then in finder go to homedirectory/library/preferences/byhost. select the file with the name that starts with com.apple.screensaver. enter command+i and in the resulting popup check the box "locked". this will lock this file and no changes to it will be possible till you uncheck that box. locking this file will prevent the box to require password from becoming unchecked. However, it will also prevent you from making any changes to your screensaver settings. if you want to change your screensaver you'd have to unlock that file, change the screensaver and then lock that file again.
you can let apple know what you think about this here:

  • Unix command to require password to wake computer from sleep or screensaver

    Yo folks,
Just as the subject says, is there a Unix command we can send that turns on the option to require password when the computer wakes from sleep or screensaver...which is the first option in System Preferences --> Security?
I looked through the systemsetup commands and didn't find anything.
    Thanks!

    Run the following AppleScript:
set items_1 to items -18 thru -2 of (do shell script "ifconfig en0 ether")
    set items_2 to ""
    repeat with this_item in items_1
if this_item is greater than ":" then
    set items_2 to items_2 & this_item
    end if
    end repeat
    set the_path to "defaults read ByHost/com.apple.screensaver." & items_2
set old_string to do shell script the_path
    set new_string to (items 1 thru 6 of old_string) & "askForPassword = 1;" & (items 27 thru -1 of old_string) as string
    do shell script "defaults write ByHost/com.apple.screensaver." & items_2 & " '" & new_string & "'"
The necessary plist key is part of an array, and is in a file which has the computer's Ethernet address in its file name, so the script needs to handle both tasks. This change will not show up in the GUI until the account logs out and back in.

  • Require password to wake computer...

I have set this option in the Security section of the computer prefs. It seems that at random times it refuses to take the password in order for it to wake from sleep or screensaver. Only way around is to force reboot, safe mode boot, and then reboot back into the user. If I boot directly into the user, I get the blank finder where only the Spotlight Icon appears. I have tried to change my users password and it still happens. Repaired permissions as well as checked on the HD.
Is there any sort of fix for this? It is rather annoying. I have advised everyone to save before getting up so they do not loose work, but there has to be something odd going on.
    Thanks

Sorry, I'm out of ideas. Hopefully, others will chime in here. In the meantime................

  • "Require password to wake computer" background color

Is there any way to change to color of the background when you awake from sleep and are presented with a login screen? I'm kinda tired of black, an image would be great. Anyone know of a way to do this?

    Dick M wrote:
Still don't know what you're getting at? When I wake my machine from sleep it goes to the desktop I've set. Go to System Preferences (Apple Logo upper left hand corner) and Desktop Screensaver then Desktop. Is it set to black in solid colors?
He has it set to ask for a password-a dialog box comes up prompting for a password, with a black background. When you enter it and press enter, your normal desktop appears.
There's no way to change that color, AFAIK.

  • Change "require password to wake this computer from sleep or screensaver"

Does anyone know how to change the checkbox in sys prefs > security > require password to wake this computer from sleep or screensaver via cli?
I would like to always have this enabled, but individual users can shut this off...
    Thanks

Code an AppleScript using the SystemsEvents>SecuritySuite>SecurityPreferencesObject>RequirePasswordtoWake then use the cli 'open' to run it?

  • My Ipad connects with my hotel wifi, but does not indicate that it is a secure wifi, even though it requires a password to access - no lock symbol, hence no password request, hence no internet access - help.

My IPad connects with my hotel wifi, but does not indicate that it is a secure wifi, even though it requires a password to access - no lock symbol appears against the wifi network, hence no password request, hence no internet access - help. My collegue who also has an Ipad can access the same wifi with ease, so it must be something to do with the settings on my machine, although checking the two machines, there appears to be no difference in the settings.

My experience with hotel wifi is that it's an open, and unsecured, connection, but unless you agree to their terms on a launch page, you can't go any further or connect. Sometimes I need to force safari to come up and even make it go to a page, to trigger the auto load of the 'agree to our terms' page.
Unless your machine is work provided so maybe could be blocked from unsecured net access?

  • Does the computer lock me after a certain amount of failed password attmepts, even when i finally have the correct password? recently changed root account password, but then forgot today and when tried again didn't work.  if so, how long does lock last?

Ok. So I just changed my ADMINISTRATIVE ROOT PASSWORD the other day and when I tried to log in today I forgot it.  I tried different variations of
the password I had set, because I wasn't sure if i had maybe set it in Caps Lock or used a different number in the sequence.  I got the message several times
about "too many attempts, try again later".  Does the computer lock me from signing in even with the correct password after a certain amount of failed
attempts?  If so, how long does this lock last for?  When can I try again?  Or is there something I need to do to remove that lock now?  I'm pretty sure I
had the right password finally but it still wouldn't accept it.
Also, I don't have any other administrative users set up on my macbook pro.  I'm the only one who uses it, so I've always just used that original User from my
    original setup.

    Do this:
    1. Reboot
    2. Hold apple key + s key down after you hear the chime. (command + s on newer Macs)
    3. When you get text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
    (Type these commands very carefully)
    mount -uw /
    rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    shutdown -h now
    4. After rebooting you should have a brand new admin account. When you login as the new admin you can change the passord on the old one.

    Regarding your new Guest Account.
If it is the Guest User created by Find My Mac, it is advisable that you leave it be in order to maintain the functionality of the Find My Mac system. It is not a typical guest account. A person can't use the account to log into the system. It only permits the user (presumably a thief) to use a crippled version of Safari, in which the thief will reveal his/her location, hopefully to an end result wherein you may be able to recover the stolen computer.
The very nature of this unique guest account is to increase the security of the system, not to degrade it as a typical guest account might do.

  • How do I enforce password to wake across all accounts?

    Hi
I want my computer to automatically lock itself if left unused for a period of time - no matter who is logged in. I can achieve this for an individual account by checking the "Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver" box in Security Preferences and setting the display to sleep after a period.
Is there any way to enforce this across all user accounts and prevent those settings from being changed by anyone other than the administrator?
    Thanks
    Ian

The information resides in this location:
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.machineID.plist
To achieve your goal you need to copy this file with the correct applied settings to every user home directory and later apply permissions that users can only read but not write to this file.

  • System No Longer Requires Password to Wake from Sleep

Greetings all! My Mini has recently stopped asking me to supply a password when waking it from sleep. It goes into sleep with no problem, complete with the pulsing white LED. But when I wake the system (using either the keyboard or the power button), the system just wakes up without requesting authentication. In addition, if I leave the system idle for 15 or 20 minutes, the screen saver kicks in. Trouble is, settings in both "Energy Saver" and "Desktop & Screen Saver" are set to never sleep the display. (And it doesn't require a password to wake the display there either.)
I've tried unchecking and rechecking the "Require password..." option in "Security", I've tried rebooting, I've tried repairing priveleges. Nothing works. I do have a KVM switch hooked up to the system, but I don't think that's the culprit, as the system has required a password in the past with the KVM switch connected. In addition, I've had this problem occasionally in the past, and it usually comes up after I've installed a system update from Apple. In the past, it's just seemed to go away on its own, but I'd obviously like to fix it myself instead of letting it work itself out.
Anyone have any suggestions on perhaps trashing certain prefs files or anything else? Thanks!

    Mac Mini 1.42GHz Mac OS X (10.4.7)

It's the same here on a recently bought MacBook Pro. Searching this forum produced quite a lot threads about this topic. But none of the solutions posted did work on my machine.
I'd like to file a formal bug report with Apple, but I did not find any bug tracking system. Is the feedback program the only way to let Apple know there is a problem?? I'd prefer if I got some feedback on my problem report...

  • Require password to wake from sleep is broken

Recently, the security setting "Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver" stopped working for me. Seems like it was around 10.4.6.
Now, whenever my mac is asleep or in SS, just moving the mouse gets me back to log in.
    I have automatic login disabled.
I suspect that something is running on the mac that is making the mechanism think that the machine is still active or something, but I don't know how to go about figuring that out.

I tto am having seeing this problem again just now, and agree that the culprit must be some dark process...
I have seen this behaviour come and go in the past, tried all the suggested 'fixes', and have to say that I see no correlation between the two.
I was obliged to perform a 'clean system install' several days ago (never before have I needed to do that on OS X - the machine was and is on 10.4.8) - only this problem arrived after that. My Powerbook Ti-DVI has, both before and since the OS re-installation, had extraordinary difficulty with restarts, let alone sleep, and MirrorAgent is most often the cause (iDisk synchronisation)...
cannot say whether that might be related.

  • Password to wake from sleep

For security reasons, I like to require that my computer asks for a password to wake from sleep. i do this on my OS X mac without a problem. I need to do the same on another mac that runs OS 9.1. Is there a way to do this?
    Thanks!
    Tim

    Hi, Tim -
There's no way to do that with the OS 9-native software.
There are many third-party screensavers whose modules incorporate such a feature, and which run in OS 9. Here's a few possible sources for such -
Screen Gear - Screen Saver, Image Displayer
    MacScreenSavers.com - Free screen savers
    VersionTracker: Screen Savers
    Free Macintosh: Apple Screen Savers
    Pure Mac: Screen Savers

  • Need to remove password when starting computer and ECT

I have posted a few times, but I think I only got one response, I have a few problems with this laptop Model # Satellite A135-S4527.So I'm going to list them and maybe some can help, other wise I may take a hammer to this laptop.
1: I put a password on my computer and I need to know how to get it off .
2: My text size keeps changing from large to very small ( I can barely read it) I have tried everything that I have read   to fix it but it doesn't help.
3: Now my laptop has started going to lock up computer by it's self and I keep having to log in again over and over.
4: And for some reason I must be stupid because when I get in here, I can never find if some one answered,  I'm sure I
have other problems but my brain just went dead, I do hope some one will be able answer these problems
    Thanksshirley53

First off, ALWAYS provide the COMPLTETE Model Number of your system when you post.  WIthout that we are flying blind.  Also, it helps to tell us what operating system you are running.
Number 4 is easy.  Click on your user name and it will show you every thread you have started as well as every post you have made.
You'll need to be more specific on which password you need removed as there are several possibilities.
You need to run chkdsk/r to clean up the hard drive.  Go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - Command Prompt and type in  chkdsk/r  then hit enter.  Type in Y when it asks if you want to run this at the next boot and then restart the computer.  This could take over an hour depending on how screwed up your hard drive has become.  These instructions are for WIndows XP.  Vista might be slightly different, but I don't have a Vista system available at the moment to check.
I have no idea about the text size change.  I've never run into that before, but there are posts in your previous threads about this.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • Unable to log into iCloud because old email pops up requesting password. Password not working and unable to receive reset

I changed the main email on my Appleid a few months back. Everything worked fine until uppgrading to iOS7 on my phone. I am now unable to log into iCloud because the old email pops up and requesting password which is not working. I cannot rest the password because my old email is unvalid as I have changed network provider. The id works fine on Appstore and iTunes so its only iCloud that making trouble.
Any suggestions to remedy this problem?

I'm also experiencing the same issue.
I've had to reset my password 3 times in the last 3 days.
At first, I couldn't get my email. I sweated it out for 12 hours, reset my password and I was good to go again. 48 hours later, I ran into the same issue. Only problem is, not only do I get the 'Incorrect username or password' on my device, but my iCloud.com login no longer works. so now I can't read my messages on the web OR on my device/computer.
I have went to appleid.apple.com and reset my password there: no luck.
I have reset the settings on my device: no luck.
I have Erase and Installed iOS 6.1.2: no luck.
I have restored my device back to factory settings: no luck.
I have performed a DFU restore: no luck.
This is my main account for, well everything.

  • How can I force Safari v.6.1 to Save passwords for sites that request passwords NOT BE Saved"?

Since the last OS X update when Safari was updated to version 6.1, I am having problems with passwords not being saved from  specific sites that request that passwords "not be saved".
    Example: Adobe.com
I did not have problem with Safari 5.1.
When I go to Safari Preferences and "click on box" "Allow Autofill even for websites that request passwords not be saved", a pop up box opens and refers me to "SECURITY & PRIVACY" indicating that a "SCREENLOCK" must be engged to allow for this action.
    I have my firewall on.
I don't understand what they are requesring me to lock & how to do it.
Anyone who understands what I am being asked to do -or- how I can re-enable password saving, please email me.
    Thanks,
    <Email Edited by Host>

Actually, Linc's reply is EXACTLY the answer that is required.
If you go to the setting he mentions and enable the password after screen saver or sleep, then Safari 6.1 will allow you to save all the autofill login information you like, even the stuff for sites that request not to save them.
