Research Studies About Accessible Technology

I just found this, and with the dicussions lately, I think
many here would be interested. In 2003, Microsoft hired Forrester
Research to do a survey of the need for assistive technology. They
asked questions about visual abilities as well as physical
impairments.
Anyway, here are the results of a methodical survey (15,000+
respondents).
http://www.microsoft.com/enable/research/default.aspx
A few quick tidbits relevant to the discussions of text size
and scalability, directly from the survey:
--Approximately one in four (25%) computer users have a
visual difficulty or impairment.
--17% (21.9 million) of computer users have a mild visual
difficulty or impairment, and 9% (11.1 million) of computer users
have a severe visual difficulty or impairment
And an issue that hasn't been in the discussions here:
--19% (24.4 million) of computer users have a mild dexterity
difficulty or impairment, and 5% (6.8 million) of computer users
have a severe dexterity difficulty or impairment.
I suppose keeping links in the same place on every page so a
user wouldn’t have to move the cursor much would help.
Assigning accesskey and tabindex would be part of making a site
easier to use for the variety of impairments.

I think if the site is well structured there should be no
need for tabindex
and using accesskeys is not such a good idea:
http://www.tjkdesign.com/articles/user_defined_accesskeys.asp
In any case, this shows how important it is to facilitate
tabbing
navigation. Good practice is to use:
- skip links when needed
- :active and :hover pseudo-classes
- redundant mechanism (onclick/onkeypress)
- tabIndex if/when need
- accesskeys with great care
- flyout/dropdown/sliding menus with great care
- the title attribute but not abuse it as it is not
accessible to keyboard
users as it is to "mouse" users
- etc.
Also *test* everything you implement, do not follow
guidelines for the sake
of "going by the rules". For example, test your named anchors
in IE (make
sure users are able to tab *from* them once they reached
them) and make sure
your "onkeypress calls" take into consideration that some
browsers consider
the "tab" key the same as the "enter" key.

nowadays have many user have problem with update to ios7 and need active with apple id maybe in the future in order escape from these problems must be stop use these products else. Because of simple user don't know about this technology and sometime just hear from other user that it 's difficult to use then force they change phone that use to handle to another.

It is a feature to discourage the theft of iPhones by making them useless if resold. It's not going anywhere. It's simple: just don't buy a phone until you make sure that the activation lock has been disabled.

  • A few questions about bluetooth technology and headsets...

Alright I am new to bluetooth technology and headsets, and want to do the proper research before I buy one.
1)I have seen some have 1.2 and 2.0 technology, so what is the difference and should I only look for one that offers 2.0?
2)Do they all offer a vibrating alert?
2b)Or just those really big kinds that look like hearing aides that have that little box behind your ear?...
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=2002 46049729
    3) Do they all have a multi-function button, 3way, mute, volume etc?
3b) Or are some just a single button that only answers and hangs up?
    4) Do any of these charge via bluetooth?
    5) I've seen some bluetooths have a micro sd chip in them... what is the point of this? Can they be used like a usb storage device?
    6) Can you buy those usb to mini-usb adapters for charging and data transfer (not sure what kind of data you would transfer to a headset) separate from having to buy a combo kit that comes with it?

You might try Google and look for answers, these are pretty comprehensive questions regarding a broad sweep of headsets. You might get answers on a few models, or just Apple's, here.
If you click on each of the models in the link I gave you it goes into more detail about each one.

  • Premiere elements 11 failed to install with the error about shared technologies

PRE 11 failed to install with the error "The installation process has encountered an error while installing shared technologies. Please restart your system and try again" all that does is uninstall everything and I have to restart agin with the same error and we go on. So far the only way it is working is at the point of the "error message" I run task manager and stop the installer, I know it's leaving files that should be removed by the installer, but it worked. This information was gained on one of the forums and seems to work. Yesterday was the first time I really used it fully and although I was able to create a project I cannot output it as a file (mpg), it starts to output ok then throws up an error and fails. As PRE 10 was still installed I imported the project (which amazed me) into PRE 10 and outputted as required with no error. All this may be due to something being wrongly installed or not being installed in PRE 11, I don't know. Can anybody help

    Hi,
I am newbie to JDE technology and interested to learn it.
Currently my role in the project is to provide support work to the person who is actually dealing with the stuff and all.
Actually he is converting the code written in lower version in the higher version
I get reports from the client and i take out stuff like Processing option, data sequencing, data selection and submit to him.
Please tell me from where shall I start.
    Kindly give references.
    Thanks,

If you are using airplay, once the film is fully cached to the Apple TV you should be able to do other tasks on the phone. If you are mirroring then that won't be possible.

  • Simple quastion about persistence technology

    Hi friends
Im a bit confused about the difference between TopLink and entity EJB persistence interfaces. Can anybody make it clearer for me.
Do i understand right that in oracle case they are quite the same, but if we are going to create an application for another AS, which may use a different persistence api (i.e. spring or hibernate) we must use the unified EJB syntax, so to make it possible for the App serv to use it's one persistence implementation...
Also i've heard that there is a new term in JEE 5 - JPA bean. Is it the same as EJB 3.0?
    Thanks in advance. Alex.
Edited by: Timin on Feb 12, 2009 12:10 PM

    Alex,
Hi, good question. Yes TopLink(EclipseLink) fully supports both the portable standard JEE5 EJB 3.0 / JPA 1.0 JSR-220 specification as well as native API that goes beyond the current JPA specification if required. If you write your application and Entity beans using standard JPA 1.0 annotations, injections and API (IE: all your EJB imports use only javax.* and specifically javax.persistence.* API) - your application will be able to be ported to any of the major application servers including WebLogic, WebSphere, OC4J, JBoss, Glassfish and even Tomcat 6 (using JPA in SE mode) with only minor xml deployment file modifications.
Yes, you should be able to convert your EclipseLink JPA application to use another persistence provider or the reverse by renaming the prefix on all the <properties><property> elements and optionally any provider specific properties. As an example of a portable EclipseLink JPA application, you may refer to the following JPA example page that details quickstart details for all these application servers.
    http://wiki.eclipse.org/EclipseLink/Examples/JPA#JPA_Web_Application_Tutorials
I would also start with the following main JPA User Guide page.
    http://wiki.eclipse.org/EclipseLink/UserGuide/Developing_JPA_Projects_%28ELUG%29
The WebLogic JPA example on this page has source code for the EAR, EJB.jar, WAR.jar and the DDL generation SE application. In it there are is no org.eclipse.persistence.* native API by design - just pure JPA 1.0 API unless a session customizer is required (as is for Tomcat based servers). The WebLogic application EAR can be ported to another server by changing the "eclipselink.target-server" property in persistence.xml and possibly a server specific deployment xml file for the EAR and WAR.
    http://wiki.eclipse.org/EclipseLink/Examples/JPA/WebLogic_Web_Tutorial
The term "JPA bean" may mean EJB 3.0 session bean or be used to describe an "Entity bean" - usually we say session bean for the first and entity bean for JPA beans (which replaced EJB 2.1 entity beans). EJB 3.0 session beans are specific to JEE servers and EJB 3.0/JPA 1.0 entity beans can be run both on EE servers and as standalone SE entity beans in a RESOURCE_LOCAL persistence unit. There are examples of all three in the example code at the following URLs.
    An SE JPA Entity bean:
    http://dev.eclipse.org/svnroot/rt/org.eclipse.persistence/trunk/examples/org.eclipse.persistence.example.jpa.server.common.ddlgen/src/org/eclipse/persistence/example/jpa/server/business/Cell.java
The same JPA entity bean deployed in an EE persistence unit:
    http://dev.eclipse.org/svnroot/rt/org.eclipse.persistence/trunk/examples/org.eclipse.persistence.example.jpa.server.weblogic.enterpriseEJB/ejbModule/org/eclipse/persistence/example/jpa/server/business/Cell.java
A EJB 3.0 stateless session bean that manages access to the JPA persistence provider
    http://dev.eclipse.org/svnroot/rt/org.eclipse.persistence/trunk/examples/org.eclipse.persistence.example.jpa.server.weblogic.enterpriseEJB/ejbModule/org/eclipse/persistence/example/jpa/server/business/ApplicationService.java
    thank you

  • Are .chm files outdated technology?

    Hi, all,
I'm researching the next step (technology-wise) for our help files.  Currently, I am using RH8 and generate our help using HTML help, thus creating a .chm file.  The application for which I create help is Windows-based.  So far, all of my research indicates that .chm files continue to be the standard for Windows-based applications.  Also, we use context-senstive help (click F1 in the field and the help for that definition displays), and we do not want to get rid of that functionality.  That is another reason we are stuck with .chm files--it's the only format I'm aware of that allows context-sensitive help.
I suppose my question is if anyone is aware of a "newer" and more "modern" output that still allows me to use context-sensitive help.  Also, our developers may be using Silverlight in the future--not sure if that will have any effect on my research or not...
    I appreciate your feedback!

    Hi there
Based on what you posted I see other questions. I'll copy what you posted and intersperse answers (and questions) inline.
I'm researching the next step (technology-wise) for our help files.   Currently, I am using RH8 and generate our help using HTML help, thus  creating a .chm file.
Fair enough. But keep in mind that the output depends on other unknown factors.
The application for which I create help is  Windows-based.
Windows-based. While I'm certain you meant that it only runs on the Windows platform, it could still be a Windows application that runs from a server. So the big question here is to ask where the application exists when the user runs it. Local PC or from a Network drive? If local PC, CHM is your answer. But if you want the help on the network, WebHelp or FlashHelp is the answer. More on this later.
So far, all of my research indicates that .chm files  continue to be the standard for Windows-based applications.
Assuming you mean locally installed applications, that's mostly right. Again, more later.
Also, we  use context-senstive help (click F1 in the field and the help for that  definition displays), and we do not want to get rid of that  functionality.
You don't have to. WebHelp, FlashHelp and AIRHelp all have the same functionality.
That is another reason we are stuck with .chm  files--it's the only format I'm aware of that allows context-sensitive  help.
Nope. As I said earlier, CSH exists in many shapes and sizes.
I  suppose my question is if anyone is aware of a "newer" and more  "modern" output that still allows me to use context-sensitive help.
Yep. WebHelp and FlashHelp are newer and more "Modern" looking. So is AIR Help. What it boils down to is how "Modern" you want it to look, as well as other factors I'll describe later.
Also, our developers may be using Silverlight in the future--not sure if  that will have any effect on my research or not...
I'm not sure about Silverlight either. But it seems to me that Silverlight is falling by the wayside. I base that judgement on viewing some popular web sites that once had Silverlight apps running, but have since moved back to Flash. I'm guessing there is a reason they made that move.
It would seem to me that AIR Help may be what you are looking for here. But only you can decide that once you know its strengths and weaknesses.
    Strengths:
    Looks newer.
Able to easily update help later.
Able to use user added commenting if using the locally installed AIR Help.
    Weaknesses:
Must be installed like an application
In addition to each user having to install AIR Help, they must also download and install the AIR viewer application prior to installing the AIR Help package.
Must have a digitally signed certificate - Allows one to be created, but it's not the same as purchasing one. Users may be hinky over that.
Not easily customized. You are bound by the look and feel Adobe decides to offer. They do offer some customization, such as adding a Company Logo, but you cannot change the colors or the layout.
I don't believe user added commenting is possible for Web Based AIR Help.
User commenting isn't easy to discover for locally installed AIR Help.
There is more on the AIR Help format over on fellow Adobe Community Professional Peter Grainge's site.
