Resolution dependend presentation problems...

hi,
i have this long lasting problem with acrobat since cs2/cs3.
we use pdfs as container format for our screen design presentations. our screen designs are 72 ppi bitmaps.
now the problem:
since acrobat cs2/cs3, these images looks blurry in acrobat even in 100% view. this is because acrobat has this new preference setting under "page display" called "resolution". here the default is set to "use system setting", which in my case is 99 ppi.
the result is that our 72 ppi screen designs got interpolated to 99 ppi by acrobat even at 100% view. since most users have different system settings, there is no way to control the appearance of our 72 ppi bitmaps.
do you guys know of a way to circumvent this problem?
one way i can think of is to use javascript to set the clients acrobat software to "custom resolution" with 72 ppi. but i have no idea how to do that.
if i can't find a solution for this problem, i have to look into other ways for presentation.

unfortunaly this is no solution for me. the result would be a change in the whole production process to bigger files and slower performance. only because of a new acrobat feature.
i wonder if scripting could be a solution...
maybe i will post this in the acrobat scripting forum.

Yes in an STL file the subs have a comma after each In and Out Timecode (as a separator) and also they don't normally have line spaces between each entry. If you want the subs to be on two lines and "force" what goes on to the second line (rather than SP deciding for you) then where you want the return to be you need to add "bar" symbol (the one above the backslash on a Mac keyboard)
Try it on a couple of lines of your subtitles to see if it works before committing. I usually create my subs as STL files but it should work

PowerMac G4 533DA & HDTV - video resolution / refresh rate problem

Hope someone can help, I need to access more resolution / refresh rates than I currently get in the Leopard display control:
I have a PowerMac G4 533 Digital Audio running Leopard 10.5.8 (unsupported). It has an upgraded AGP videocard, a ( flashed PC - RV200 chipset) Radeon 7500 w/ 64MB and a DVI output w/ a VGA adapter. I have used this Mac perfectly with my 19" widescreen Samsung SyncMaster 940BW, at a resolution of 1440 x 900 / 60Hz / millions of colors. This monitor is actually for my MacPro, but I used it for the G4 to set it up.
I moved it to my living room to use as a basic HTPC. Since it runs Leopard, it has up to date VLC, Quicktime for video files and a working Superdrive for movies. I don't expect it to play anything more than 480p properly, I think that was the best I got on YouTube. But if I have a DVD ripped to DivX or MP4 it plays them fine on the Samsung monitor.
I connected it to my Viewsonic N3760w 37" 1080 HDTV. It turns on, gray screen w/ Apple and gives me a working desktop. The problem is that I cannot get it to give me the correct resolution and more importantly it seem to have the wrong refresh rate. It is currently set at 1280 x 768 / 60Hz / millions of colors. The screen give me like a small line slowly moving up across screen, higher refresh rates only make it movie faster up the screen.
According to my Viewsonic, these are the resolutions for computer using the VGA plug on the tv:
PC - 1360x768 (preferred) , 1024x768, 1280x768
Mac G3/G4/G5 - up to 1280 x 1024, 1280x720 (preferred)
Please note all of these are lower resolution than my Samsung monitor. My Viewsonic also has on screen adjustment of " phase " and " frequency " as well as the usual color, contrast, etc available. Is there a 3rd party app to manually adjust the resoluion and refresh rate? I have seen Windows programs, does one exist for Mac OS X?

I wish I knew more. I checked out the app you did a trial of. I noticed this statement on their web site: Quote
"After rebooting monitor stays blank
For some reason your monitor does not accept the installed frequency. SWITCH IT OFF!"
This is the type of statement that would 'worry me.' -- having the phrase: SWITCH IT OFF! all in caps seems to imply a possibility of damage...which I mentioned in my initial post. (and the site goes on to talk about how you should even then connect another monitor to change the settings you've made that were not accepted).
As I said, though, I wish I knew more for sure about this. It seems that you not only did the obvious of checking System Peferences>Display, but also realize the Viewsonic has buttons that can influence it's screen image, most about position of the image on the screen but at least one item about resolution on mine. (under Setup Mode)
For what it's worth, my Viewsonic is about 6 years old now, still fine, and has eight (8) possible resolutions shown in System Preferences.

It is currently set at 1280 x 768 / 60Hz / millions of colors.
PC - 1360x768 (preferred) , 1024x768, 1280x768
Mac G3/G4/G5 - up to 1280 x 1024, 1280x720 (preferred)
If you're only talking about a difference of 1280 x 768 and G4 1280 x 1024, perhaps just stretching the picture using the Viewsonic buttons is the way to go.
Or, from the numbers, perhaps the G4 just wants a resolution closest to it's preferred state!?

Does Screen Resolution Cause Display Problems?

I just picked up my new 15 inch Retina Macbook Pro with 750m and I changed the screen resolution to the second option,the one with the bigger text but i am noticing that when i close a window, a white horizontal line comes up around where the window was. Is this a screen problem or software related problems? Thank you.

Enabling Firewall breaks Bonjour name resolution (and other problems)

Hi there, I thought I had a simple setup but trying to enable VPN & Firewall has shown me there are some issues I need help with:
Setup: MacOS X Server 10.5.8 on MacPro
- Machine is Mobile Account Server for 5 other machines connected to network
- DHCP is obtained from Router in 10.1.10.x range. Server hardcodes its IP in that range (outside of DHCP addressable range)
- Services running are: AFP, Open Directory, SMB, Software Update
- All client workstations connect to server using "servername.local"
This has all been working fine. However over the weekend I tried enabling VPN as we have a public IP address we can use. VPN works fine except:
a) Plugging an additional ethernet cable into port 2, and configuring that port to have the external "public" IP information caused the "license in use issue" that has been reported here (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9958588&tstart=0) so I had to use the solution of duplicating the existing ethernet config and entering the additional external IP to run both off the same port.
b) I can't get L2TP working, but I can get P2PP. Seems like other people are having similar issues (http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=9704644)
But anyway, so I have P2PP VPN working and without a firewall previous functionality hasn't been impacted. Now of course, I'd be silly to leave this machine with the Firewall turned off as it is now a sitting duck out on the inter-tubes.
I thus enabled the Firewall service with these settings:
- Any service: Allow only traffic from "any" to these ports: (I enabled the ports for P2PP and L2TP)
- 10-net: Allow all traffic from "10-net"
This I assume would restrict access from the external interface, but let all internal subnet communication be unrestricted (like it was before I enabled the firewall). However this doesn't seem to be the case. I noticed that simple non-VPN connections to AFP service took a long time to happen using "afp://servername.local", several minutes before the authentication dialog appeared.
Furthermore if I brought up "Software Update" on a managed client set to pull from "servername.local:8088", the connection would fail.
If I disabled the firewall service, the slowdown and local Software Update would work fine.
But if I try setting: "Allow all traffic from 'any'" on the Firewall (which should be almost like turning it of) it doesn't have a positive effect and slowdown of name resolution and failure to connect to local software update still occurred.
Is there something in the Firewall being enabled that breaks Bonjour name resolution? Anyway to enable the Firewall and still keep Bonjour .local name resolution? Does this problem have anything to do with issue (a) we have to work-around?

N95, low screen resolution /light screen problems

Hi people!
Can someone help, ive not done anything to my phone bar take it out from my pocket and notice the screen display had changed.
The screen seems to be really light and pale all of a sudden, no change in brightness, but it just seems brighter.
the resolution seems diminshed too-when i go on the net any pictures are in less detail as if the resolutions been lowered.
ive tried turnin the phone off and removing the battery.when it starts up agtain the NOKIA symbol come on in its normal strong blue but while its booting the NOKIA turns to the lighter shade of blue and the display again just loads at a lighter version of what its normally like.

You need to check it's not a hardware issue.
One thing you can try is to reset the phone using the instructions you can find in this post :

However please be aware that doing so will wipe ALL the data from your phone such as information in your calendar, contacts and so on.
In order to save your data you can use the PC Suite application to save and restore the data from your phone - this software can be found here :

One thing to note is that as part of these diagnostics, you should NOT restore any backup or install any software on the phone as you could be putting the problem back onto the phone.
If this doesn't work then it's likely you have a hardware fault and you should approach your local Nokia Service Centre to get your phone fixed.

One screen presentation problem on calls pass through cube

Resolution and cropping problems

Good Morning to all,
I am a babe in the woods with this video stuff. In past years used iMovie & iDVD with SD with no problems. Now we have a Canon HFS 10 ACVHD camera and no end of problems. Bought FCE 4 and Toast with Blu-Ray plug in and even took a 6 hour class on FCE.
Work in HD with a MacBook Pro and SD on a 2x3 Ghz Dual-Core Intel Xenon with 7 G RAM with a NVIDIA 7300 GT video card running on 10.4.11.
With HD, I get great results exporting from iMovie to iDVD EXCEPT that every frame in the entire sequence is cropped even though it is in 16:9. The ratio is OK as it is wide screen but it is cropping about 10-15%.
I have exported in several formats to FCE then go from there (also in various formats) to Toast with worse results. Resolution is horrible and when burned in the Blu-Ray plugin is not readable in a DVD player - Non Supported Format! When I go to the DVD portion of Toast, it is set up for TiVo 4:3 and cannot find a way to change out of that to something normal that will produce something equal in resolution to SD but in 16:9.
If I upgrade the OS in the 3Ghz machine will I also have to upgrade the video card to a NVIDIA 9300 or something else to work in HD? (saw that on another post someplace in the recent past).

Powerpoint 2008 Opening Presentations Problem

Hi when I open an existing powerpoint that I created it automatically goes to the slideshow view like I'm going to present it. But I just want to edit it, so if I click in the bottom corner, end show, it closes the whole presentation, and I have to go under file-open-"ppt. 1" or whatever. It's a real pain, I don't want it to open it as if I'm going to present it, I want it to start it up and normal view. Also why when I hit end show does it not go normal view but close the whole presentation. After I open it the long way it works fine, if I end the show, it goes back to normal mode, but for some reason when I do it the other way it messes up.

So, I went to the Apple Store last night and spent a great deal of time with two Apple Geniuses. They were puzzled. We check one of their new MacBook Pros running 10.5.6 and Office for Mac 2008 version 12.1.5. It worked fine on their computer. So it looks like Office 2008 can run and print on a MacBook Pro unibody with the latest OS and MS updates. Next, we tried my computer printer to their printers, a Lexmark and an HP, and no success. So it looks like it is not a printer driver problem. We took a PP file from my computer and put it on one of their computers to rule out a corrupt file and it worked fine. So, I am still not sure what caused it. They suggested that I completely un-install MS Office 2008 and re-install, but what a pain, but I think I will try that this weekend. Adam, thanks for your input, as that makes it seem like an OS 10.5.6 problem. However, I must say I have Office 2004 on my iMac and updated it to 10.5.6 and it works there fine. Hope we get this solved soon.

HT1379 My computer I-mac is running super slow. If I zap the PRAM it goes back to running well , briefly... a few hours, then back to super slow. What is the resolution for this problem? I have a Time machine that does back up well.

My computer is running super slow. I can correct the problem briefly by zapping the PRAM but is resumes as a problem after a few hours. I have good time machine (capusle) backup daily. I have done a disk verify and there doesn't appear to be anything wrong there.
Help, this is wasting a lot of time to do simple functions.

Resolution TV play problem...

Hi, i finally got it to work, and now i got a small problem.
When i play the DVD after being made, the picture seemed to be too big.
I have it on default and 4:3 default also (NTSC).
I making an ANIMATION DVD from .avi file i downloaded, and i can't really read the subtitles on TV vs i would on computer. Is there a difference and can i do anything about it?
