Resolution to x220 failing to sleep

For many months I was having a problem where my laptop would not sleep properly.  About 1 out of every 5 times that I slept the computer it would appear off with the screen blanked and keyboard unresponsive, but the fan would come on and the unit would get very hot.  This was very annoying because I'd have no other choice but to do a hard power reset on the device, and occasionally I'd put the laptop into my bag without noticing the problem.  Then I'd later find either a laptop completely drained of battery, or an extremely hot laptop in my bag.
This problem was occurring on both my wife's and my laptops (both x220 units), so it was not an isolated issue.  I suspect however this was caused in part because I had enabled UEFI boot on both systems.
I recently discovered through much trial and error that disabling the "ThinkPad PM Service" resolves the problem.  Unfortunately this seems to remove the ability to turn off the WiFi/Bluetooth/WWAN via Fn+F5, but I view that as an acceptable tradeoff for myself.
A diagnostic note in case anyone at Lenovo wants to look into this: Prior to discovering that disabling this service solved the problem, I attached a kernel debugger to see what the system state looked like during one of these sleep failures.  I was surprised to find that all of my processes which were running before the initiation of the sleep transition were still running, so I suspect the failure happens early in the sleep process shortly after the screen and keyboard are turned off.
Also, the WiFi and Bluetooth lights retain their state, and the disk light still blinks on occasionally whenever some program initiates disk access.

Hello,
Maybe there is some information stored by the operating system that might be of use.
If you open an elevated Command Prompt (filename: CMD.EXE) and issue "powercfg -lastwake" and "powercfg -waketimer" commands, do they display any useful information about what the latest event was that woke the X220 up, and what events might cause the X220 to wake up?
Regards,

Remove Chrome (and Google Drive if you have it). Higher temps when using Netflix are normal, Silverlight (which Netflix uses) is a resource hog, get used to it or stop using Netflix.
Let's see what else you are running. Download a copy of Etrecheck and run it. Post the report here.

  • X220 Crashes during sleep

X220 crashes during sleep, goes into a 7 second cycle of beeps and LED flashes. Multiple (probably refurbed) systemboard "repairs" didn't fix the problem. Sometimes the laptop needs to be jostled for it to happen but it can happen anytime. I know it's happened to many users and LENOVO REPS ARE IGNORING THE PROBLEM so if it's happened to you, reply here and start your own thread. Let's see if we can get some help.

  • IPod Touch clock app fails to sleep in 3.0

It seems that since the 3.0 update, the clock app fails to 'sleep' my iPod Touch (1st gen) when the set time elapses -- allowing the ipod to run all night, and completely drain the battery. Is anyone else experiencing a similar problem with the clock app?

  • Resolution keeps getting reset by sleep mode

This is on an older Mac Mini. I bought my latest right before Yosimite came out. I tried Yosimite on the older Mac Mini to see if I liked it and so far I'm torn between Yosimite and Mavericks. I've been running Yosimite on this Mac Mini almost since it became available in the app store. Recently however every time I go into sleep mode my screen resolution gets changed and other nasty things happen. I've been using caffeine 24/7 to keep this machine out of sleep mode as a work around, but this is going to shorten the lifespan of this computer. This started after a security update from Apple.
    Specifics about the system.
Mac Mini late 2009  2.28 ghz intel core 2 Duo.
    Graphics Nvidia GeForce 9400
System goes through a Trendnet KVM switch to a Samsung widescreen monitor using VGA (Apple brand adapter)
The internal HD is dying so I run Yosimite off an external Seagate drive.
Logs are not much help though this one I am curious about. Remotecontrol SHOULD be disabled.

Have had major problems with flash crashing the last week or so. Seems like I'm installing a new version of Flash every other day and each is less stable than the last. I'll be SOOOO glad when HTML5 takes over and no more Flash.
    Any ideas?

Roger youre way off base, it has happened to me countless times, confirmed by Apple stores that it is an original email and have spent hours with them both in store and on the phone, have changed my password so many times and two days later it will not give me access.
Rog if they are guessing my passwords I salute their knowledge of Latin, Greek and random thoughts of mine.
But I have found the answer. I am buying a Samsung and smashing my IPhone.
    Never again Apple crap.

  • X220 resume from sleep and boot issues

This is driving me crazy! I have an X220 with Windows 8 and UEFI boot installed.
It all started when I first installed Windows 8 a few months ago which required me to update my BIOS to the latest version. The installation process often got stuck when booting from the Installation CD (the round circle stopped spinning, the display was at full brightness). Eventually I managed to boot into the Installer (when the boot logo doesn't get stuck, the display is then dimmed to minimum).
I was quite happy to have a superfast lightweight OS which booted in an instant.. When suddenly it started to get stuck when booting (same issue with the boot logo not spinning anymore). This happens quite randomly, but I often manage to boot (maybe 2-3 times a week, I don't boot often though..). Now, the booting hangs are less of an issue for me but more often that that it fails to resume from sleep. The LEDs flash and then it instantly drops to sleep mode again (well at least the sleep/moon LED is active). This happens quite often as I sleep/resume up to 5-10 times a day (changing lecture rooms, meeting rooms, save battery when the lectures are boring, ...)
Now after researching and spending hours in debugging this issue, it seems that I'm not the only one having this (or a similar) issue, but often without any definitive solution being specified.
This is what I have already tried:
    * Upgrade BIOS and SSD firmware to latest
    * Install/update latest drivers
    * Mess around with BIOS options
    ** UEFI/Legacy First options
    ** Intel Virtualization/vt-d
    ** Others..
I know based on other threads that I'm not the only one experiencing exactly these issues. Has anyone managed to fix this?
    Thank's in advance
    Fabio Scala

I had a similar issue, as soon as a described even a little bit of it to warrenty support they sent someone to swap the board

I will at times hook up my MBP to a plasma display to show photos. Now-sometimes when waking from sleep (and not attached to an external monitor), it reverts back to 800x600. I have to go to SP to displays and re-detect the MacBook display. Unpredictable and frustrating.

Lets get a few details straightened out first:
    1. What cable are you using to connect? DVI, VGA, HDMI, component, composite, s-video, etc.?
    2. What resolution is it when you connect? If your plasma is an HDTV, it is capable of taking much higher than 800x600, so depending on the cable you use, you can adjust that to make it higher or even the same native resolution.
    3. When you disconnect, is the computer running, or closed/sleeping? If you close, then disconnect, it might think the display is still connected. Or, rather, after switching resolutions back, later on when you open it up it suddly changes to a lower res?
In the meantime, in system prefs, in "Displays" check the box that says "Show displays in menu bar" and then you will get a menu up top to choose your displays and resolution sizes. That will at least make it easier to change.

  • Docked resolution problem x220

    Hi All
Sometimes after redocking resolution on external screen doesn't change to one set in  Intel graphics and media panel. My system Lenovo x220 docking station 3 OS Windows XP SP3. I have more the same systems and they don't have this problem. I updated system via lenovo vantage update software but resolution problem still randomly occurring. I replaced docking station as well. What could be wrong?
    Thanks

As I understand the graphics disturb after removing docking station, if the issue occurs for few seconds then it can be ignored.
If the resolution does not come to normal then you should update the BIOS and check.
    http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/8duj15us.exe
Also confirm the Intel graphic driver version is 6.14.10.5384

  • Display Changes Resolution When Computer Wakes From Sleep

I have a MacBook Pro bought in May of 2006. In the last year, this problem has been getting progressively more annoying to me. When the computer wakes from sleep (not every time, but most of the time) the screen will flash blue, then reset the resolution to 640 x 480, I think. To fix it, all I have to do is go to System Preferences and change the resolution, but when I do that, it pops up two windows, like it thinks I have a dual display set up. To fix this, I always click 'detect displays,' and it fixes it, but the next time I wake the computer from sleep, it does it again. This isn't really an urgent problem, but I would expect my computer to behave a bit better for me.
Thank you in advance for any aid you might give me.
    Lisel

Hi Lisel. I have a similar age MacBookPro that does the same thing. I don't really know how to fix it I'm sorry, I wish I did cause it's annoying. I just thought I'd let you know you're not the only one with this issue.
Basically, for some reason it thinks it has two displays connected, even when there isn't. To stop it being a total pain, make sure when it does come up with the two Display Pref windows to set them both to 1440x900, at least then when it does go dual display it won't be 640x480 and you can still read stuff.
I've also left the Display Pref icon on the top tool bar (next to the AirPort and Bluetooth and stuff), so I can just click that and Detect Displays. When it does that it figures out for itself it doesn't actually have two displays connected and so goes back to normal.
I know that's a workaround and not a fix, sorry. I'd be keen to know if anyone else has any better solutions:)
    Thanks,
    Mark.

  • X220 is not sleeping well in docking station

    Hi!
When my X220 are in docking station(Ultrabase 3) and in sleep mode it often just turns on again. I have tried disconnecting all equipment(mouse, ext.keyboard etc.) from the docking station but with the same resulte. All drivers and so on are up to date.
Have anyone experience the same problem and/or have any solution?
    Solved!

    Hey ThinkVegard,
I would double check your Power Manager setting and make sure they are set correctly and are not bring your computer out of sleep. There are a few settings in BIOS that can do the same and would suggest checking these too just to make sure before we start to look else where.
    Best Regards,
    Hiro

  • VNC - Screen Resolution Problem on Wake from Sleep

My question: When it either wakes from sleep or cold boots (NOT on restart for some reason), Mac OS X seems to be confused on the previous resolution of my screen. On wake or cold boot, my main screen SOMETIMES gets set for 800x600 at 56 Hz, according to the display preference pane. I normally run at 1152x870 at 75 Hz. In the past, I have just used the "Detect Displays" command from the display preference pane. This always fixes the screen resolution and restores it to the correct setting.
This would not be a problem if I didn't have to run VNC. These screen res changes are crashing my VNC server. Here's what I do. I run a VNC server (OSXvnc is the name). I go away. Machine goes to sleep. From machine 'x' I send a wake-on-wan packet (a pain in the butt to figure out for me, BTW). My VNC Machine wakes up. I know it's awake, because I can login to it from remote, using SSH. But the screen res problem happened, and OSXvnc shuts down and won't reinitialize automatically. It says "Screen Resolution Changed - Server Reinitialized", and the "Start Server" button is waiting to be pressed. Of course, this cripples my ability to use VNC.
For what it's worth, this problem has happened with two different video cards. Granted, the first card was an ATI Radeon 9000 with 64 MB or VRAM and the second card is the same model with 128 MB VRAM. It's virtually the same card, but still, that's two different cards.
I have 2 CRT displays connected thru adapters (DVI-VGA and ADC-VGA) to the ATI. I'm running all the latest updates for Panther, according to Software Update. This problem has been with me since 10.2.3. I lived with it until it started really getting in the way (VNC crippling & such).
    Any thoughts? -- iJW
    G4 Dual 1 GHz MDD (no FW 800)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

One other item I just discovered. It seems that whether or not my monitors are powered on has something to do with it. When my monitors are on, the problem doesn't happen.
I like turning them off to save electricity. If I'm using the computer remotely, I already have a monitor. I don't need one powering up at my home that no one's looking at anyway. So the question still stands...
    Anyone?

Once it is done with all this, when not debugging and failing, it calls a translator class which is meant to run this constructor, but if you don't do all of the IOC stuff above, it will throw an error saying that the IOC container is null, hence why I need
it to complete calling the class above. If anyone has any answers, I'd appreciate it.

It has something to do with the IoC and not Gallio that is deling with dependecy injection and mapping with the IoC I believe.  You should post to the Unity forum

  • X220 Appears to Sleep But Doesn't

All, first I tried to get it to sleep in this thread.  I had that working for about a month just fine.  Then I noticed that about half the times I pull it out of my bag it is on fire, the fan is running and the battery is dead or just about dead.  Clearly it is not sleeping correctly.
Either closing the lid of selecting sleep from the start menu does turn off the screen the way it should and it appears to sleep.  But most of the time the fan doesn't actually turn off (I have to hold the corner up to ear to hear/feel the hot air) and I guess its not really sleeping.
Im not sure what to try to do to troubleshoot this.  I know I really don't want to have to shut down every time I need to close the lid.
    Anyone have any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance.

Guys, the EPIC FAILURE was on me and boy do I feel like a dope.  Sure enough, my never used wireless mouse was turned on inside the bottom of my bag.  I got my 5 year old to confess to messing around in my bag which must have turned it off.
Seems like Sleep is now working again.
Thanks for the help and sorry for the wasted bandwidth.

  • Certain resolutions make jobs fail w/ watermark on in Compressor 3

Compressor FCS3 on OSX 10.6.8 - turns out that certain frame sizes can prevent jobs from running along with a watermark filter.
I had an H.264 setting with resize to 854x480 (essentially 480p 16:9 with square pixels). Whenever I tried to add a watermark it would fail ("3x crash service down", quicktime error -50). It worked fine without the watermark.
I tried different file locations, files, codecs, and Digital Rebellion's Compressor Repair. It wasn't that. As soon as I changed the resize to something else like 864x486 (with watermark), everything worked.

Ok I had the same problem. After upgrading to 3.0 and rebooting my first gen iPhone it would not go pass the initial apple logo.
I tried restoring it but iTunes would not even detect it.
After doing some research I tried putting the iPhone in DFU mode and that did the trick. iTunes detected it and I was able to restore it. I'm downgrading to 2.2 since many first gen users are having problems with the 3.0 firmware.
Here are the instructions to put the phone in DFU mode:
Steps to put iPhone in DFU mode
    1. Connect your iPhone to your computer.
    2. Turn iPhone off.
    3. Hold power and home together for 10 seconds (exactly).
    4. Release power but keep holding home until the computers beeps (observed on a PC) as a USB device is recognized.
    5. A few seconds later iTunes should detect your iPhone.
    Good luck!

  • Failing to sleep (again) VERY HOT MBP in the bag/like a bakery

Hi 2 all, i'm italian so my english should be C-- but i have a trouble with my MBP about sleeping the mac.
Simply don't work randomly and the white led remain on withot pulse. I tried to see in Console if any task stop the sleep process -sounds a joke but...- but none appears. I add also another synthom: sometimes the power-chord led switch off, then i leave and reinsert just 1mm on magsafe and return on (equally on green nor orange).
Can you suggest previous -solved- thread about the "don't sleep" trouble?
    Should be an hardware failure?

My MBP had narcolepsy so bad earlier this year that I sent it for service: dog no limp for vet. Also have had fewer shutdowns lately, but the "OS-update-fixed-it" dog won't hunt - shut down twice today and once two days ago.
Could it be power-supply related? The shop asked that the battery be left out so there would less chance of damage on shipping, and of my two power adapters, fewer shutdowns for the one not OEM. (OEM had had a frayed cable at the case, but a friend did a really good repair.) Maybe the battery is weak (it does show only ~ 85% charge when I disconnect the power adapter sometimes.) Is there any kind of app that checks the battery? How does a user come up with a claim that his/her battery will "only hold a 1800 mAmp-h charge"? (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2234305&tstart=0)
More frequent and possibly related, when the computer has gone to sleep it often won't wake up from hitting the spacebar, but a short press on the power button will call up a "do you really want to shut down" panel which I can cancel out of. Shouldn't work like that, but it does.
