Resource minimised vs downtime minimised

HI,
I have a number of small systems that need to be upgraded with low amounts of users and not very strong servers.  I think resource minimised is the best option in our situation but I can not confirm this with any figures or information from other resources.
I know that doing down time minimised rather than resource minimized is going to impact the performance of the production system but I can not find anything that tells me by how much.
Does anyone have any references or can you point me in the right direction?
Thanks
Sara

If your system resources are not very high, i would advice you to go for resource minimised.   In Downtime minimised due to the parallel activity ( upgrade and user activity) may hamper the upgrade.
Downtime during an upgrade,  depends on the:
·        Hardware you are using – this is the most important factor
·        Release from which you are upgrading and the release to which you are upgrading
·        Database type and size
·        Applications used
·        Upgrade strategy
·        Productive applications
·        Number of clients
·        Installed languages
·        Modifications
·        Number of support packages included

  • BI7 dual stack upgrade using 'resource minimised' method

    Hi
I am upgrading a Windows 2003/MS SQL 2005 sandpit NW04 BI 350 dual stack (ABAPJAVA) to BI7 (NW04S ABAPJAVA) as a test before working on our actual landscape, I have started the ABAP upgrade and chose the 'resource minimised' method as downtime isn't an issue on the sandpit, I then started the upgrade on the Java stack, but then noticed in the documentation it states you should use 'downtime minimised' for a dual stack upgrade? the ABAP prepare recognised I had a dual stack and said it would be synchronised but never complained about the resource minimised choice ? the phases have been waiting for synchronisation so far without a problem.
Is this a problem? I can reset the upgrade, but its quite far through, so would rather not !
    Thanks,
    Paul.

    Hello Paul
As you said, SAP state that you must perform a dual stack upgrade using strategy downtime - minimised. I had a problem when I used resource minimised but if your upgrade is running then donu2019t terminate it. If it works, thatu2019s great.
What I normally do is run strategy downtime minimised with an import time of zero hours.
    Thank You

  • Re:Downtime for a Resource

    Dear Experts
I wanted to know how to enter the Downtime for a resource in PPPI.
As when i went through SAP library it was explaining the Downtime for a resource and the menu path for entering the down time was given as Resource->Reporting->Enter Downtime.
But when i went through the menupath in ECC 6.0 i could not find the same in Resouce->Reporting, there is no downtime node.
Pl do explain me about the scenario in detailed steps.

    Dear satya
I have a resource and i schedule it for a particlar operation for 24 hrs.
Suddenly there is a breakdown in the resource due to which i cannot use it.
So inned to enter the breakdown time for that resource and the enetred time where can i see.

  • Adding category in types of Downtime in  Resources in APO.any setting?

Adding category in types of Downtime in  Resources in APO.
Three categories exist under downtime tab in resources like planned downtime, resource inactive and pm order.Iwant to add one more category based on some other functionality.
Is there any SPRO or other configuration setting through which I can do this?

    Hi,
I dont think there is any setting in SPRO to add the custom type of downtime in resources.I checked the technical details of this field and found that these 3 types are defined in the Domain /SAPAPO/CRES_DOWNTIME_TYPE of Data Element /SAPAPO/CRES_DOWNTIME_TYPE So I think we can not add or change the types in it.

  • Impact of Unplanned downtime of Resources

    Hi All:
I have a quick question. If a resource has an unplanned downtime, I would like to view the impact it has on the product produced in that resource during the unplanned downtime and the impact it has on all the orders of products pegged to the one produced in this resource.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Narayanan

    Hi Narayanan,
If a resource has unplanned downtime, if you want to see the impact by viewing the nature of orders that are getting affected, you can use t-code /sapapo/rrp4 and /sapapo/rrp1 and select the planning version, from, to periods, location, resource etc., and download the orders (like dependent demends, requirements, receipts, etc.,) which will give you the entire information on the nature of demand affected and nature of orders that are affected.
Please confirm your query is resolved.

  • Resource minimized for ECC 6.0 with EHp5 upgrade

    Hi All
Please can anybody help with the resource downtime queries?
    1. During the shadow instance installation do we need to down the production system? Or we can install in parallel with the prodcution instance and during the upgrade activities we will shutdown the production isntance.
    2. How much downtime is required for end to end if we go for Downtime minimised or Resource minimised?
    Thanks
    Rajat Sarkar

    Hi,
Main difference between the resource minimized and downtime minimized strategies is - the length of production system downtime. As per the upgrade guide:
    - if you go with resource minimized, the downtime of system starts at the end of preparation phase itself.
    - if you go with downtime minimized, the downtime of system starts in between the actual upgrade - when actual import starts.
    - the end of system downtime, ends at the same time - irrespective of the strategy chosen.
Would suggest you to refer to: https://service.sap.com/~sapidb/011000358700000749432010E Section 3.2 especially.
Hence the length of downtime for your system - increases if you choose the resource minimized. But however, as Sunny mentioned, we here in the forum cannot give you an exact downtime value for each of the strategies. It depends on a lot of factors and best approach is to do test runs for the your system - using both the strategies and then compare the results.

  • Best practices to reduce downtime for Database releases(rolling changes)

    Hi,
What are best practices to reduce downtime for database releases on 10.2.0.3? What DB changes can be rolling and what can't?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    RJiv.

I would be very dubious about any sort of universal "best practices" here. Realistically, your practices need to be tailored to the application and the environment.
You can invest a lot of time, energy, and resources into minimizing downtime if that is the only goal. But you'll generally pay for that goal in terms of developer and admin time and effort, environmental complexity, etc. And you generally need to architect your application with rolling upgrades in mind, which necessitates potentially large amounts of redesign to existing applications. It may be perfectly acceptable to go full-bore into minimizing downtime if you are running Amazon.com and any downtime is unacceptable. Most organizations, however, need to balance downtime against other needs.
For example, you could radically minimize downtime by having a second active database, configuring Streams to replicate changes between the two master databases, and configure the middle tier environment so that you can point different middle tier servers against one or the other database. When you want to upgrade, you point all the middle tier servers against database A other than 1 that lives on a special URL. You upgrade database B (making sure to deal with the Streams replication environment properly depending on requirements) and do the smoke test against the special URL. When you determine that everything works, you configure all the app servers to point at B and have Streams replication process configured to replicate changes from the old data model to the new data model), upgrade B, repeat the smoke test, and then return the middle tier environment to the normal state of balancing between databases.
This lets you upgrade with 0 downtime. But you've got to license another primary database. And configure Streams. And write the replication code to propagate the changes on B during the time you're smoke testing A. And you need the middle tier infrastructure in place. And you're obviously going to be involving more admins than you would for a simpler deploy where you take things down, reboot, and bring things up. The test plan becomes more complicated as well since you need to practice this sort of thing in lower environments.

  • What production downtime should we expect during the technical upgrade?

    Hi,
We are planning for a Upgrade from 4.7 to ECC 600, i need to know how can we able to calculate the downtime for the upgrade?
    Thanks.

The production downtime is the period during the technical upgrade when the production system is out of service. The downtime period depends on various factors such as hardware power and size of the tables to be migrated, and is therefore contingent on each individual situation. SAP upgrade technology provides you with two strategy options: downtime-minimized strategy and
    Resource-minimized strategy.
    Characteristics of the downtime-minimized strategy:
    Shorter production downtime
Parallel operation of production system and shadow system that enables the execution of as many upgrade tasks as possible during the uptime of the production system
    Higher demand on system resources
    Characteristics of the Resource-minimized strategy:
No parallel operation of production system and shadow system
    Lower demand on system resources
    Increased production downtime
SAP recommends that you perform the upgrade using the downtime-minimized strategy if a short production downtime is required.

  • APO - capacity profile time capacity for resources

    Dear all,
I have a problem which I hope can be resolved by one of you ...
In APO, it is possible to add downtimes for resources using transaction /SAPAPO/RES01 ... After adding this, we can click on "capacity profile" and then we see the time capacity of a resource with all downtimes per shift (with capacity variant) ... I would like to use this time capacity in a program, so it would be interesting to have this information on DDIC-level ... I am looking for some days now, but I don't find which tables to read or which BAPI / function to use ?
Does anyone know how I can find this data ?
Thanks in advance for the assistance !
    Greetz,
    Kurt.

    Hi Kurt,
You can use the below tables/views in which Resource and Capacity Profile related data is stored.
    Tables:
    /SAPAPO/RES_INTQ - Resource Capacity Intervals
    /SAPAPO/RES_INTV - Resource Capacity Intervals
/SAPAPO/RESCAP - Capacity Profile: Resource Time Capacity
/SAPAPO/RESDIM - Dimensions and Capacity of a Resource
    /SAPAPO/RESDOWN - Resource Downtime
    /SAPAPO/RESDOWNT - Resource Downtime
/SAPAPO/RESKEY - Reset Key for Resource to UID
    Views:
    /SAPAPO/V_RESVER- Resource Capacity Variants
/SAPAPO/VRESINTQ - Resource Interval of Available Capacity Quantity Model
/SAPAPO/VRESINTR - Resource Interval of Available Capacity Rate Model
    BAPIs available to read:
BAPI_RSSRVAPS_GETCAPAPRO - Read Resource Capacities Profile
BAPI_RSSRVAPS_REQUESTCAPAPRO - Query: Selection of Capacities for Resource and Result Transfer
    BAPI_RSSRVAPS_GETLIST - Selection of Resources
I hope this will help you to get the data which you want to read.

  • Planning on alternate resource

    Hi Guys,
We have maintained main reource with non availability for 20 days.
But when system creates orders, it is placing on alternate resource considering this downtime on main resource.Means it is placing on the alternate resource  before the downtimes maintained on the main resource.
All the resources are with mode priority A and no procurement priority (infinte scheduling)
My doubt is why it is placing on alternate resource considering the down times of main resource. Why it is not placing on the main resource after or before the downtimes.
How system knows that resource capcity is reached while planning?
    Thanks,
    Prash

    Hii Prasanth,
The mode priority should be different for different modes , then only it comes alternate resources with lesser priority. Otherwise the order creates will be pick up random resource with having  samemode priority .
As in your case it is A mode priority for all the resources. Might be it  is taking alphabetically the first resource for all the orders you are creating manually . It uses  GUID ...
But if your requirement is always to create on main resource , make it Mode priority A for that resource . and other alternate resource make mode priority B . and use the strategy in PP strategy to pick up only Mode priority A,  with infinite scheduling... use current mode retain ....
Hope it'll give you proper result..

  • Upgradation To  BI 7.0

    Hi all,
We are planning to Upgrade to BI 7.0.Our current version is 3.0B. Can anyone  tell me what are the Pre-Upgrade Activities And what are the activities which we do while we are upgrading and what are the Post Upgrade Activities we need to do.The following are Two Strategies Available. Can anyone Explain what is the exact  difference between these two strategies And which one is more helpful.<b>Also what is the exact meaning of Downtime And  Resource Minimisation in this Context</b>
    Down Time Minimized
                    Short Down time.
Medium amount of space required to be able to recover data base.
Need a shadow system to work.
       Resource Minimized
No additional system resources during upgrade
                   No additional space requirements
This is the first time I am involved with an  BI upgrade project.
Please Do provide an answer as early as possible. This is very urgent.

  • Migration of AlwaysON database from WSFC 2008 + SQL2012 to WSFC 2012 + SQL2014

    Hello All,
I have a 6 node GEO cluster, 4 nodes in primary site + 2 nodes in secondary site. In the primary node 03 and 04 has 2 pair of SQL instances default + named.
I am planning to  move the named SQL pair from WSFC 2008 + SQL2012 TO WSFC 2012 + SQL2014. It has only one AG group with 4 TB of DBs.
Do you guys have any experience and options for this migration. I am planning to go with  backup/restore. Let me share yours inputs.
    1. Backup/restore 2. cross cluster migration 3.Detach/attach 4. SAN migration
    Thanks!
    Muthukkumaran Kaliyamoorthy
Helping SQL DBAs and Developers >>> SqlserverBlogForum

Since WSFC does not support rolling upgrades, you will need to have another WSFC running Windows Server 2012/R2 (R2 is highly recommended due to the features available for maintaining high availability) and do a cross-cluster migration. Refer to this documentation
    for more details.
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj873730.aspx
This requires that you're fairly comfortable with PowerShell.
The main challenge here is dealing with hardware resources since you will need additional servers when moving into the new WSFC. You would have to run multiple instances on the same cluster node while you remove a node and repurpose it for WSFC 2012/R2.
This is where proper planning is very important to make sure you are maximizing your resources while minimizing downtime. I cannot speak about the capabilities of your SAN as each vendor will have different features but my approach has always been dependent
on SLAs and recovery objectives. Backup/restore will still be needed to synchronize your data from the old WSFC to the target WSFC.

  • Reorganization of DB

how we can do reorganization the db, what need to be reorg? what the best practice for doing reorg?

Have you asked the customer what, exactly, they mean by reorganizing a database? Have you asked what benefit(s) they're hoping to get from this exercise?
With an appropriate downtime window, you can certainly spend a lot of time and effort to reorganize every object in a database. Doing so, however, has substantial costs (in resources, time, planning, downtime, etc), limited benefits, and significant risks. The proper response to that sort of request is almost always to tell the client they don't need it and don't actually want to do it.
Of course, there are a handful of scenarios where it may make sense to reorganize a particular table or a particular index either as part of fixing some design issue or as the result of some corner case data processing, but in that case you ought to be able to point at particular objects and particular problems and make a reasonable case that reorganizing object A will eliminate/ reduce problem B. Until you can articulate this sort of cause and effect relationship, though, it's probably not worth moving forward.

  • How to increate the  R3trans processes during upgrade ...

    Dears,
I'm doing a Sap upgrade to ECC6+EHP4 and I selected the scenario "High resource use (minimal downtime, fast import, archiving off)" in the Configuration module.
The Downtime module is started  but I saw the gui does not allow to modify the number of processes it's going to use like :
    > MAXIMUM UPTIME PROCESS
    > R3TRANS PROCESSES
I saw the XPRA_UPG phase is using 1 batch only, despite there are a lot of resources available.
As I'm planning others upgrade run in the next future for this sistem, I would like to know if there a way to increase the number of these processes, without changing the Scenario "High resource use (minimal downtime, fast import, archiving off)."
In this run the parameter MAXIMUM UPTIME PROCESS I suspect is set to 1; I would like at least to set it to 2 in the next run .
But I would like to continue to use this scenario "High resource use (minimal downtime, fast import, archiving off)." in the future, but increasing these parameters MAXIMUM UPTIME PROCESS and R3TRANS PROCESSES.
I read the 'Troubleshooting and Admistration Guide' but it's not described here; it seems the only way to change these parameter is to choose a completely different scenario (so called "Manual Selection")
How they can be changed ? Are they written in some file into the upgrade directory ?
    best regards

    Hello Roberto,
with this option ("High resource use (minimal downtime, fast import, archiving off)") it is not possible to change the key parameters that you're looking for.
For your case you should select the option "Manual selection of parameters". Please check the piece of log below to see the parameters you can change with this option:
    >> 2009/05/27 15:12:57  START OF PHASE PREP_EXTENSION/INITSUBST

    processes used.
Enter the host name of your batch server:
    BATCH HOST: SAP_EXAMPLE
Enter the maximum number of batch processes during the upgrade:
    BATCH PROCESSES: 5
Enter the maximum number of parallel processes during uptime:
    MAXIMUM UPTIME PROCESSES: 1
Enter the number of parallel import processes during downtime:
    R3TRANS PROCESSES: 3
As you can see, all these parameters are editable with this option. You should consider it in your future upgrades, in my opinion.
