Response times using BEX/Web vs. BEX /Excel user interface

Our customer in Sweden is currently rolling out SAP BW to local sales offices around the globe and they are having huge response time problems with the BEX/Excel interface running from Australia towards the BW servers in Sweden. If running the Web interface the response time is acceptable.
Question: Is this problem caused purely by bandwidth limitations or is it the distance itself that is the problem. If they double their bandwidth capacity, will the response times using the BEx web interface be reduced by 50% or will it remain unchanged?
/Fredrik Osterstrom, Capgemini,

Hi,
It is generally much slower to display queries using Excel than the HTML version because of the way they display data and the way they are designed/engineered.
But generally of course, it should also be on an acceptable basis.
If you still  could not figure out the problem, I advice you  to display the query using HTML version via Browser and then download to Excel aftewards. It is normally fast. This is just a work around till you figure out the probable cause. There are many factors that contribute to this.
Try isolation technique.
1.) Is the query slow on displaying using Excel on all desktop computers or only selected computers?
2.) Is the desktop computer fast enough w/ ample memory to handle the processing?
3.) Are there any programs running/installed on the computer which directly affects Excel processing?
Hope I have helped, and if I did, please grant points!

  • Benchmark response times using BIA.

    Hi all
I ran some queries using BIA and logged their processing times. Now, I want to compare these processing times with "benchmark response times using BIA" just to make sure that these queries are performing optimally. Could you pls provide pointers/links to the same.
    Regards
    Niranjana

Following are the steps we do in order to get the benchmark data.
Assume you have Indexed a cube in BIA.
    Without BIA:
    1. Goto transaction RSRT2-->Select the query and click "Execute + Debug"
    2. Under section "BIA Server"-->Check "Donot user BIA Index"
    3. Under section "Others"--> Check "Display statistics data" and "Do not user cache"
    4. Execute....After query complete click on Back button to see the statistics
    5. Sum up the "Duration column" and Subtotal by column "Event Text"
    6. We are interested on the item "datamanager" - note down the value
    With BIA:
    7. Goto transaction RSRT2-->Select the same query and click "Execute + Debug"
    8. Under section "BIA Server"-->DONOT Check "Donot user BIA Index"
    9. Under section "Others"--> Check "Display statistics data" and "Do not use cache"
    10. Execute....After query complete click on Back button to see the statistics
    11. Sum up the "Duration column" and Subtotal by column "Event Text"
    12. We are interested on the item "datamanager" - note down the value
    13. Click on "Aggregation layer"-->You should note the on the "aggregation" column the cube name should be suffixed with "$X" ( which indicates it uses BIA)
    14. Here "viewed at" is sum of other two front columns...
In the above way you can benchmark between non-BIA vs BIA query performance. if you see even with BIA the performance is slow...then it could be bcoz of OLAP time...lot of calculation in the frontend etc...
In general we see the performance of BIA is fantastic...except sometimes the numbers are not matching between BIA and non-BIA queries...where we need to rebuild the indexes.
    Hope it helps

  • Slow response when using Xcelsius web service connection witn input values

We've been very successful in using the Xcelsius Web Service Connection. We've recently moved forward toward using input values when calling a web service and having issues with response time. Without input values, it takes 3 - 6 seconds to retrieve and display the results in Xcelsius, but, when using the input values to the web service, it takes about 27 seconds for Xcelsius to retrieve and display the results.  Does anyone have experience with fixing slow response associated with using input values for a web service connection?

    Hi Sharone,
What's the version of your Xcelsius and BOBJ server?
I'm asking because using the last version of BOBJ server (BOXI 3.1 SP 3) you have new services on CMC just to help Xcelsius to work better with WebServices.
    Regards,
    Rodrigo.

  • Experiencing very slow response time using AirPort while wired response is fine. Suggestions?

After a surfing session a few weeks ago the response time for my AirPort internet connection became painfully slow.  When I plug in to the wired connection it works fine.  Resetting the router and modem doesn't seem to fix it.  What might have happened and what can I do to fix it?

It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference that appears during these hours that is preventing your AirPort Base Station from providing a clean RF signal.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like iStumbler, Wi-Fi Explorer or AirRadar to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible.

  • WRT54G VER 6 delayed response when using the web (Old WRT54G VER 2 works fine)

Very strange problem. I have had a 2yr old WRT54G VERSION 2 and it (still) works perfectly except I broke the antenna (I don't even use the wireless side). I just got a new WRT54G VERSION 6 and am having weird problems with it. I have the same problem with THREE DIFFERENT REV 6's (Staples hates me by now) but the old REV 2 always works fine when I swap it back in:
With the REV 6 version when I click on any web link or web site from My Favorites there is like a 5-10 second delay before anything connects. Just dead air for 5-10 seconds with ANY click of the mouse in IE7. When I swap back the old REV 2 version the connection is immediate and fine.  If I do a PING it takes 5-10 seconds for the ping to start then it goes fine with the REV 6 but the REV 2 pings out immediately. Same problem with speed-tests. It takes 5-10 seconds to start but the results are fine on the VERSION 6 but the VERSION 2 is fine. I tried the latest firmware and the settings are the same on both router versions. I find it hard to believe I have 3 bad WRT54G REV6 routers but yet the old VER2 one continues to work fine. Comcast says it isn't their problem (and I agree) yet 3 bad routers seems highly unlikely.
One thing I have noted.  The INTERNET light on the Version 2 WRT54G blinks at a "leisurely" pace, but the INTERNET light on the 3 VERSION 6's all blink at a tremendously fast rate, probably 5x faster then the REV 2.
For now I'm back to the old Version 2 WRT54G.
Any ideas why 3 Version 6's basically don't work and an old VER2 works absolutely fine (except for the broken antenna).
All routers have most recent firmware updates.
Message Edited by MisterEd on 01-30-200711:02 PM

Has to do with the version 6 routers lack of memory, it gets overloaded with packets so it slows down or just stops working.  Usually unplugging and plugging back in temporarily fixes it.  Do a google search for versions 5 and 6 you will see its a common problem.
The reason your version 2 works better is it has twice the memory.  After version 4 they switched from Linux operating system to VXWorks.  Supposedly works better with less required memory.  Can they be more wrong?  LOL
If you want the same performance out of a WRT54G series router look at getting a WRT54GL v1.1.  Made with the same specs as versions 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Just checked my GL, coming up on 50 days online without a reboot.

  • Urgent:How to Speed Up the Response time for PDF Report of  500 pages

    hi all
i am running the 9ias on Solaris and Generating some reports
Which fetches around 50,000 records and Display them in pdf format.
When i am ruuning the Query at Database level Response time is Very fast.
But when i Run the Report in Web Browser same report takes 7-8 minutes.
So it seems that the Conversion to pdf and Displaying it takes most of time.
Does any one has idea What parameter's needs to be changed/Caching ??? /
or any other ways or methods which can be used to Reduce the Response time.
(its once a monthly Report and User need to Download all the 500 pages as
    a Single Document).
    Any help / suggestion please
    thanks
    jai

You aren't by any chance calling a function in your repeating frame that in turn goes back and queries the database, are you? If so ... don't. We regularly do 500+ page PDF-file reports, and one thing we discovered early on was that repeatedly going back to the database while generating the report output (in our case, in calculations that were being done on each line of a report) slowed the output down by an order of magnitude. Instead, we now retrieve all the data needed for each report up front (via functions or views called in the initial SQL for the report), and just use Reports to format the output. MUUUUUUUCH faster -- 200 page reports that used to take 15 minutes to complete now complete in just seconds.
One way you can visually see if this is part of your problem is to watch the report execute in the Report Queue Manager application. If it spends all its time on the "Opening" stage then breezes through each page, this is not your problem. If instead it seems to take a long time generating each page, I'd suspect that this may be at least part of your delay.

  • Ranking response times for Fire Department

    Hello,
I'm in the middle of powerpivot pro's online course, but I'm looking for a little feedback to see if I'm on the right track with a project. I work for a fire department and we collect the response times of our units. As you can guess, we have goals we measure
against and I'm hoping powerpivot will be a good choice to work with. Simply put, for each incident (fire, medical) I create a response time using a calculated column in powerpivot window subtracting the arrival time from the dispatch time (format HH:MM:SS).
I am populating the workbook with a database connection to our SQL database. I group the incidents using the unique incident number in a pivot table, so it list every unit that was on the run. My idea would be to create a measure listing each unit's response
time, looking for the minimum time and compare the minimum against our goal. The result returns either true or false.
I"m working on the solution, but I'm just wondering if my idea sound plausible using powerpivot?
I'm not looking for anyone to do my work, but looking for any suggestions to push me in the right direction.
Thank you for looking , Brent

    Hello Paul,
The calendar table was something I just put in because of a lesson I had with Rob's course, so I was in the processing of adding it to the project as a means of reinforcing the lesson. I will take another look at our SQL database, but
in the database, the incident and apparatus tables are primarily linked by the incident key. I will double check to see if the apparatuses in the table have another relationship with a look up table and I can change the data model. Initially, I was looking
for the simplest model to start with and then build from there.
As far as the error, the min function is working correctly to find the minimum time of the incident, but I think my confusion comes with the grouping of the rows. As you can probably tell, there is one incident key for each fire call
and many apparatus are assigned to the call with the incident key as the primary relationship. If I add all the incidents to the pivot table, it correctly identifies each incident as being met or not met. But, if I remove the incident keys from the pivot and
just keep the months, the pivot table correctly filters down to the month and find the minimum of the entire month and I loose the details of each incident's value of met or not met. Thank to Rob, I understand what is happening, but not how to fix it (I'm
finishing up the calendar table now and the X factors are next, which will probably help me with this issue).
The reporting for now, is pretty simplistic. It is being able to identify each incident, if it met the goal and then able to report out of the incidents how many we made and how many we missed. If we had 1,000 calls and we made 500 of them, we would be at
50%. The goal is a simple true or false based on the minimum time of the first arriving unit ( I used 200 seconds for this project).
I do have Excel 2013, so I can open the file. I created the original at home with 2010.
I hope that make sense.  Thank you for the help. I have the day off and I'm working through Rob's video course most of the day today.  Thanks, Brent

  • Slow response time for HTTP requests

I have an 8310 Pearl. For the past week, I've noticed that the response time using the Internet browser was very slow. One work-around was to cancel the request and then submit it again. The second request returned the page MUCH faster.
I cleared my history, and this seemed to have helped. Has anyone else noticed this? Thanks

    Welcome to the forums
    Try a Battery Pull:
    1. Remove the battery while phone is turned on
    2. Wait a few seconds before inserting it again
    3. Allow the long boot up process to finish (takes a few minutes usually)
This clears most software issues that occur on blackberries from time to time. You could also use Quickpull, a free app that simulates a battery pull without physically removing the battery: http://software.crackberry.com/product.asp?id=27660
A battery pull reclaims memory lost during application usage and clears minor software errors that creep in over time. The blackberry runs an OS just like your PC runs windows and the battery pull is the equivalent of a reboot/restart on your computer.

Too big a topic :). Involves download a profiler (commercial ones like JProbe or OptimizeIt or YourKit or ClearApp or free ones available on a google search) which can profile CPU execution and installing and configuring your JVM to send data to it. Then running the problematic part of your application, the profiler will tell you how long each method call took, how many calls were made, the call graphs etc. Once you know which part of your application is taking time , you would then inspect the code and see what the problem is. Im assuming you have already done your rule of thumb tuning (on VM, OS, DB etc).
Google will give you plenty of examples, the tool you choose will also be important , whether you already have a commercial profiler available to your project , or whether youll need to configure some open source one.
This is my writeup for TPTP (free open source)
    http://theworkaholic.blogspot.com/2009/10/profiling-bea-weblogic-portal-apps.html
If you havent profiled/tuned before , i suggest you find someone on your project who has and watch them while they do it. Setting up profilers on app servers and writing tests is somewhat painful the first time around and you can learn much more from someone else.

  • Can I design a web page to use the background image from the user's installed persona?

I build web applications, and I would like to have an application use the background image from whatever persona the visitor has installed, if any. Is this possible, using css/js/html?

No that is not possible with code on web pages (userContent.css could probably do this).<br />
The persona is only used as the background for the user interface (toolbar) area and not for websites.<br />
The dimensions of the persona with the height of 200px is also not enough to cover a page.

  • Using Captivate with a localized user interface

    Summary:
I'm working on an Adobe Captivate 2 project describing an
application that has been created in several languages.
I'm trying to follow the Captivate 2 help topic "Using Adobe
Captivate with a localized user interface", to create localized
movies for each language, but it does not work as described in the
    help topic.
Can anyone help me with this problem, see below "What went
    wrong?"
    Steps to reproduce:
    According to the help topic:
    1. Record a source langauge file from the application (in my
    case swedish).
    2. Export the text captions to a Word document "Export
project captions and closed captions", and translate the text (into
    english).
    3. Record a new language file from the application, without
    any automatically included objects.
    4. Import all objects "Import slides/objects from other Adobe
Captivate projects>Objects only" from the source language file
    created in step 1.
    5. Import the the caption text "Import project captions and
closed captions" from the translated file in step 2.
    What went wrong?:
Step 5 does not work, I cannot "Import project captions and
closed captions" into the new language file, the menu text is grey.
    Product version:
    Product: Adobe Captivate 2
    Version: 2.0.0 Build 1177

    Hardware: Qbic pc x86
    OS Version: XP Professional
    RAM: 1014 MB
    Color Depth: ?
Display Card: Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller
    Resolution: 1280 x 1024

Hi TekEl and welcome to our community
For what it's worth, here is how I might try it.
    1. Record a project using either language.
    2. Perform a "Save As" to a different name.
    3. From the new project, export the Captions.
    4. Localize as necessary.
    5. Import the revised captions into the new project.
I think the trick here is to ensure that you only attempt to
import into the project that created the export.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Can we use Result from another query in Webi using Bex uery universe?

    Hi,
Can we use Result from another query filter option in Webi to create a report using a Bex Query universe?
I need to create a report using two universes, one is Bex Query Universe and the other is Orcle universe. I have two queries, one is using Oracle universe; the other using Bex Query universe. I need to pass the Oracle data from the Oracle query to the Bex Query query to get the matched data from SAP Bex query.
I used Result from another query in the query filter panel for the query using Bex query universe. But I got an error saying that 'A filter contains a wrong value. you cannot run this query. (Error: WIS 00007). The data used in the filter on both sides are the same. they are char.
I have tested by using two queries from the same Bex query universe to see if the Result from another query filter option works. And I got the same error.
Has anyone run into the same issue and if this is possible and what should be the solution?
    Thanks in advance!

    In that situation:
Create two queries : Oracle and BW query.
    @ Report:
As you have to see result set from both the Dataproviders, correct? To achieve thise one must have common dimension objects to merge them at report and use Objects those are coming from both queries to use them in single Table/Report.
Unless you don't use Merge Dimensions, you don't get a chane to use both queries objects in single Table/Report. (It will give tooltip saying: You can't drop here -- Incompatable Objects)
In case, if you don't have common dimensions, change object definitions to Detail objects, for those required.
    Hope it helps you.
