Restart required to recognize RAM?

Hi guys: I have a G5 PowerMac 1.8 GHz Dual processor running OS 10.4.10. Back in January, I installed two 1 GB RAM chips from Crucial in slots DIMM2/J13 and DIMM3/J14 (two 512 chips are in the first two slots). Everything was fine, the memory was recognized and I had no problems. Then recently I updated to OS 10.4.10, and I noticed that upon start-up the two 1 GB RAM sticks were not recognized -- the system profiler showed the slots as empty. If I reboot the machine, the RAM then shows up. This "workaround" (just restarting every morning) is a functional fix but clearly something is not right. The guys at Crucial said something vague about an OS bug that might be causing the problem. Any ideas or suggestions from all you smart people in the forum? I have tried zapping the PRAM but the problem persists. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi James Koh1-
Have you tried swapping the positions of the 512 pair and 1 GB pair?
I personally never heard of an OS "bug" causing this. What does happen is that the Mac OS seems to get pickier about RAM with each system update. If the RAM is under warranty I would suggest returning it and trying another pair or 1GB sticks.

I just bought a macbook pro 13" with 4gb and would like to get aperture on it. Will aperture require too much ram for my computer? Thanks for any support.

I just bought a macbook pro 13" with 4gb
I have been using Aperture on such a system, and it was o.k. with Snowleopard and moderately sized images. After I upgraded to Lion and started to user larger image files - 30 MB tiffs, I saw the occasional beachball spinning. You should be prepared to quit other applications that will hog the RAM (like Safari), when working with Aperture on Lion or Mt. Lion with only 4 GB. If you can, follow Frank Caggiano's recommendation and upgrade to 8GB. It will make a large difference.

• How often should the SMP server get restarted? Cockpit message "Restart Required!"

How often should I restart the SAP Mobile Platform server? I have received a message in the SMP Management Cockpit that states "Restart Required!".

Hi Darrel,
Batish is right there is no need to restart server unless you change specific settings that need a restart. Ex. cache settings. You can find an "i" symbol next to these fields which need a restart if you change these values.
Also server restart is needed if you change any config files ex. admin-role-mapping.xml.
Are you able to reproduce this issue. Could you give a screen shot of this issue. What is the version of server?

• Post 1.3.5 issues: App Installation problem - Restart Required (endless loop)

OK, so I've upgraded to 1.3.5 and that went well. The problem now is that I can't install ANY application from the App Catalog. Every time I attempt to install something the install fails and I get a message "Restart Required" to which I respond "YES" and the device restarts (looks like a luna restart, not a full restart). However, I still can't install anything since I keep getting the same message.
Anyone else seeing this? I'm attempting a full restart now (still in progress as of this post).
Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Sprint)
This question was solved.
View Solution.

The looping "Restart Required" message is apparently the result of having some Homebrew apps installed that don't quite have everything Palm expects. The process which is trying to move your apps to their new home barfs and gives up. When you try to install a new app, it trys again (with the same result).
The fix is to download the latest Preware and run something called the Emergency Migration Helper. This "fixes" the Homebrew app installs so that the Palm migration process can succeed. I assume you could also try removing all Homebrew apps, but the Prebrew EMH fix is much easier IMO.

• Restart Required?!?!

For the longest time one of the great things to boast to Windows users about was OS X's ability to install system updates without reboots. Why are most of the updates coming out requiring reboots? What gives?!

Joe Raymond wrote:
I understand system file updates needing a reboot but lately even applications are needing reboots as well. Safari is an example.
Safari AFAIK includes some hooks into the system, as do some other apps.
Again, it's possible to stop a daemon or other running system program, update it and restart it. Many Unix servers do this to prevent downtime, but it is a complex routine and for most home users an unnecessary way to do it, since a home computer reboot cycle takes but a minute or two, whilst a Unix server might take a very long time.
A reboot every week or so should not be too bothersome. By my reckoning, the last update requiring a reboot was nearly a week ago.
In my case, I never install more than one update at a time, so if several apps require a reboot, I reboot once for each of them because I do not trust computers very much, and many times those who apply several updates at the same time experience issues.
I agree that reboots are not necessary, but they are not that inconvenient to most of us who do not leave our machines running 24/7 anyway.
For those who do not like the "restart required," they should simply install the updates before turning off the machine for the day, and the install will complete the next day when the machine is restarted, thereby not creating any extra restarts.

• One slot can not recognize RAM

Hi there
I am using the
HP G62t-350 CTO Notebook PC
I want to upgrage RAM up to 8 GB (already have 1 RAM with 4 GB
However, slot 2 can not recognize RAM I purchased, I replaced that RAM to slot 1, it work correctly, both 2 RAM work. But only one slot work with RAM
What should I do to get it fixed?
Thank you very much

Hi:
If your notebook is still under warranty you should contact HP to get the motherboard replaced because that is the only way it can be fixed.

• Tecra 8200 doesn't recognize RAM in Slot B

Since a few days my Tecra doesn't recognize the RAM Module in Slot B. Before all was fine. I have 2x256MB Modules. I was wondering why my Tecra becomes more slow the last days and then i saw that i have now just 256MB RAM. I change the Modules from Slot A to B. I checked also both RAM moduls with MEMCheck. Both are ok! Just when i put one RAM to Slot B and none to Slot A my Tecra doesn't boot up! If i insert both moduls my Tecra boots up but just with 256MB RAM.
Is there an other solution then to buy a new Notebook? Is my Mainbord demaged?
I was so contently with my Tecra until now ;-)

Hi
Like Joao said, probably the memory slot B is defective and therefore the memory module cannot be recognized.
The notebook supports max 512MB (2x256MB) but I dont know if the single 512MB module can be used in one slot.
I presume its not possible.

• Mac mini doesn't recognize RAM

I recently upgraded my mac mini (1.83 Ghz proccessor) to 2 GB of ram (1 GB to each place).
Unfortunately, it doesn't recognize the one of the two slots. The ram was purchased from a local iStore.

Recheck the RAM spec's, Mac's are picky and many times that will happen with multiple speed or the incorrect RAM. Additionally if the RAM is the correct spec, then you may either one that is not fully seated in the slot or one module that is bad.

• FSRM - restart required

Hi,
I have searched high and low for a solution but have not had any luck so I decided to post this topic.
Our issue is that while installing the server role "File And Storage Services" and more specifically "File Server Resource Manager" (other extras can install) we receive the error displayed below.
(I need to verify my account to post images so in the meantime here is the plain text)
"The request to add or remove features on the specified server failed.
The operation cannot be completed, because the server that you specified requires a restart."
Some OS/Computer/extra details:
- Windows Server 2012 Standard x64
- Domain joined as RODC
- It is possible that when we install 2 servers 1 has this issue and the other does not, a reinstall can resolve this but we prefer to avoid this as it is time consuming.
What we already tried:
- Obviously reboot the server but the error always returns
- Installing the role trough (elevated prompt) Powershell: same error
- Modifying specific key in registry, not quite sure on the specifics any more: no change
- checking event viewer: nothing notable was found
Currently we have a server with the problem set aside so we can use it for potential solutions.
Please let me know if more information is required, looking forward to figuring this out.
Best regards

Hi,
On current situation, please refer to the following article and enable Windows features by using DISM. Then
check if still encounter this issue.
Enable or Disable Windows Features

à
checking event viewer: nothing notable was found
Please navigate to: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Server\Logs and check those log files which were modified
when this issue occurred. Any clue? (Please note: the Logs folder is hidden. Please open Control Panel, select Folder Options, select View tab and check Show hidden files, folders and drives. Then check it.)
Meanwhile, please check Event Viewer again. Thanks for your understanding. Please open Event Viewer and click
Event Viewer (Local), then check error or warning in Summary of Administrative Events tab.
If any update, please feel free to let me know.
Hope this helps.

• FMS 3.0 stops accepting connections after 1-3 days, restart required

Hi,
We have a custom application that is running on FMS. Server is dedicated just for fms, there is only one application running on the server, with more instances, average traffic is 3-15 simultaneous users. The problem is, server suddenly stops accepting connections (after 1-3 days from restart), from this point it is impossible to connect to any instance, and fms server must be restarted. When the server crashes, the admin console can see all open instances, can close instances, can restart fms. There is nothing logged, that would explain this sudden failure.
Second problem is, cores are connected and disconnected too often, causing client to reconnect (takes 2-5 seconds).
Do you have any idea what is causing these problems?

We have seen similar issues and the best work around is to have your clients connect on alternate cores/servers. The way to accomplish this really depends on your type of application.

• Mac pro 2006 won't recognize ram

Hey Everyone.....I'm not a giant techie, but now my way around a computer more than most I guess...here's my question...
I have a Mac Pro 2006 running 2ghz dual core xeon processors and with 2gbs Ram (2GB x 4).....I just finally upgraded my ram and purchased 8gb's (4GB x 2)!
I installed the new ram in Riser A in slots 1 & 2, and moved the old ram all to Riser B in slots 1-4 but I think I screwed something up. I booted up my machine and it recognizes the 8gb modules (whew!) but doesn't recognize the old 2gb's. I don't know what configuration I should use.
Should I have Riser A full with slots 1-4 occupied by my new 8gb's and a pair of the 512's, putting 9gb's on Riser A?? Then I would put the second 512's on Riser B?? 9 on Riser A and 1 on B??
8GB Ram is making such a great performance upgrade, but 10GB's of Ram would be pretty sweet too!! :)
Thanks for any and all help.

Assuming that the new RAM is for Mac Pro and "look the same"
Sometimes two brands or different sets from the same make don't get along.
Where you installed is fine.
I didn't understand what it was, and what it is now.
You have:
4 x 512MB for 2GB
4 x 2GB
2 x 4GB
Ideal would be
Riser A: 2 x 4GB
Riser B: 2 x 2GB
See if that works first.
Run Apple Hardware Test
The math and figures you posted don't add up for me.

• Startup Disk Doesn't Shut Down All The Way (restart required)

Is anyone experiencing problems using the Startup Disk in System Preferences?
95% of the time all my system does is close all applications, including the Finder, and then pause with my desktop picture, no mouse and no choice to try anything. I have to press and hold the power button to restart and when it does it doesn't start on the disk I asked for...
When it works it works as it should, but mostly it doesn't at all. Any ideas?

inknpaper wrote:
Leopard should be a more efficient operating system than Tiger and thus everything should work slightly faster, if not a lot faster.
In every version of OS X, improved speed is largely the result of caching more data. Hopefully, it is obvious that creating the caches initially takes substantial time, & that updating them may also do so if there have been substantial changes to what should be cached.
This could be done on the 'back end' before shutdown, on the 'front end' after restart occurs, or with a combination of both techniques. From what I can tell, Tiger uses mostly the 'front end' approach, which makes for quick shutdowns but sometimes long startup times. Leopard seems to favor the reverse, doing what cache housekeeping it can before shutting down.
For me, this usually results in quicker overall restart times with Leopard, especially after doing anything that requires much cache maintenance. I guess your mileage may vary....

• IMovie 6HD is freezing up with restart required to gain control of iMac G5

Sorry to be so late into the boards here, I know this issue has been dealt with before.... I simply can't find the issue that best speaks to my problem.
The life of my son is chronicled on a series of 8mm video tapes. The tapes start with VERY analog, and move into more reliably reformatted to digital as we upgraded our 8mm camera over time. Any way, I have imported these tapes into my Mac (after converting to digital). As I try to review the digitized movies, the playback stops within seconds of starting, freezes on one frame, while the playhead moves on as if the movie is playing in the background. I don't think it is really playing inthe background, as the iMac is frozen solid iMovie can't be Force Quit, a shutdown is required.
Important to note: this glitch started with iMovie 4, the importing software. I upgraded to 6HD to try to conquer the problem, without success.
The digitized clips are kept on a WD 500GB USB2 external drive. It was reformatted to HFS+ (journaled) before starting the digitizing. I watched each movie clip play as it was being input/recorded onto the harddrive. There is nothing else on the HD but the movie clips.
I am baffled. I run iMovie 6HD v.6.0.2, OSX 10.4.6 on my 2GHz 20" iMac w/1GB Ram.
Any ideas?
Thanks for the help!
Tim

I bought an intermediate digital 8mm cancorder on eBay for $200 or so. A Sony DCR-TRV340. Sony's built-in analog-digital converter let me put my analog tapes into camera, and provided me with digital output. Once I had digital output from a camera, I had digital input for the iMovie App. I no longer needed the vastly poor stand-alone analog-digital converters in the marketplace (Dazzle, for one), that were freezing the iMovie program from the get-go. Although I received NO replies to my question, I managed to solve this one with a little catching-up technological-wise.

• Why WSUS installation on WS2012 R2 fails with message indicating server restart required?

Dear all,
I've trying to install WSUS server role on WS 2012 R2 standard. Server is domain joined, and local SQL server (SQL Server 2008 R2 with SP3) installed. This SQL server is to host the WSUS database.
WS 2012 R2 is fully patched. Nothing else is installed on this server except SQL server mentioned above. I initiate WSUS role installation, specify that WIS is not required, rather WSUS database is required, database connection to locally installed SQL server
is established; which succeeds without any problem, but when wizard starts WSUS role installation it continues to fail over and over. It indicates in server manager task view that role installation failed because the server require restart.
I restarted server several times, repeated the process but this continues to behave like this.
Why WSUS installation on server fails repeatedly?
Why log should be examined or any other dependency is missing here?
Please advise.
Regards,

Hello Steven,
Thanks for the input, in fact I did mention server name to pick SQL server instance from, since the only instance configured is default instance locally on the server where I'm trying to install WSUS on.
When Add Roles/Features selection wizard gets to WSUS configuration; it asks for location where updates will be stored, next it asks to connect to SQL server to use for SUS database; that's where I specify local server's host name (in my case HQCAS) and
click "Check connection" this succeeds without any error.
All these steps proceed without any problem, but later on, WSUS role installation fails. I also checked CBS.log file; but it didn't give any specific clues? The only message I receive is that role installation requires server restart.
I reboot server; start all over, but the behavior remains the same. Since WSUS role did not get install in the first place, it won't be possible to check event viewer for WSUS related events. Moreover...wsusutil.exe tool will also be not available until
after successful install.
I couldn't reach any post deployment. Had a look at that link you forwarded, the
update mentioned in below area also doesn't apply since I specify the local server's host name and then click "Check connection". This steps goes without any error. Any other insight would be greatly appreciated.

Shahzad
