  • Restart Tomcat from JSP

    Hi,
    I have the following requirement. I need to restart the server after I do some report generation.
    If I click some button on my web page. It should shutdown the server and restart it.
    I can stop the server by coding <% System.exit(1) %>. But after I close I need to restart it. Can we execute batch script to execute shutdown.bat and startup.bat of tomcat in that sequence to do this?
    Thanks

    sounds like you're letting memory clutter up with unused object references.
    Garbage collection won't pick them up because there are still references to it.
    Manually trying to force garbage collection is another Very Bad Thing (tm), almost as bad as restarting the server to hide the fact that you have a shoddy application running on it.
    Almost certainly you're storing something (probably the entire data for the report) in some global variable which you then forget about but don't actually let go out of scope.
    Another near certainty are database connections and other database resources being opened but never closed.
    Both are extremely common mistakes made by inexperienced programmers.

  • Extracting data from xml spreadsheet for JSP

    Hi,
    Currently i am developing a web application where user can upload a MS excel file, then the application will extract data needed and store into database. But facing problems where those excel files may content massive images that make the file size too large to be upload on to the web. Now i try to export those excel files into xml spreadsheet, to get only text data. Need helps on how to extract data from xml spreadsheet. Which API needed?
    Thanks

    Without getting into too much detail, a DTD defines the elements that can appear in an xml file, the order they can appear in, which elements can be nested within which other elements, what each element can contain, etc, etc. In short, a DTD defines the structure of the xml file and Microsoft defined a DTD for the xml files that are output by Excel.
    This is not taken from an xml file produced by Excel but DTDs look a llittle like this very basic example.
    <!DOCTYPE note [
      <!ELEMENT note (to,from,heading,body)>
      <!ELEMENT to      (#PCDATA)>
      <!ELEMENT from    (#PCDATA)>
      <!ELEMENT heading (#PCDATA)>
      <!ELEMENT body    (#PCDATA)>
    ]>If you open the one produced for you by Excel in Wordpad or another simple text editor, you may see something like this in there.
    However, if you are going to use a parser to access the file for you do not worry about getting to grips with DTDs for a short, simple project.

  • Apache for HTML and Tomacat for JSP

    I have a linux system. I would want to use Apache as web server ( for HTML file ) and Tomcat as application server ( for JSP file ). I have my sites in dir /var/www/... and I have configurated Apache to "read" these sites... but when I insert a JSP file in these directories Tomcat doesn't work that file.
    How I have to do that??

    There is a file in $TOMCAT_HOME/conf directory named "server.xml". In this file you should put the following line codes:
    <Context path="$APPLICATION_DIRECTORY"
    docBase="webapps/$APPLICATION_DIRECTORY"
    crossContext="false"
    debug="0"
    reloadable="true" >
    </Context>
    The APPLICATION_DIRECTORY is the same that you using in apache config file "httpd.conf".

  • Reload web-inf/web.xml file without restarting tomcat

    Please help me if any one have a solution .
    I am doing development in jsp, servlet. I am using tomcat5 as a webserver.
    i want to reload web-inf/web.xml file without restarting tomcat.

    From the tomcat admin page you can stop/start and refresh individual applications. See the tomcat documentation. Which, when you have a question about tomcat, you should always do first.

  • Unable to compile class for JSP. apache-tomcat-6. What could be wrong?

    Hello, I am new to JSP and I am trying a very basic jsp and class file on Windows XP. I get the Unable to compile class for JSP.
    Steps that I have done:
    javac ch06_01.java , placed the ch06_01.class under
    C:\Apps\apache-tomcat-6.0.16\webapps\ch06\WEB-INF\classes
    Then grabbed the ch06_02.jsp and placed it under
    C:\Apps\apache-tomcat-6.0.16\webapps\ch06\
    When I run it (by placing this into Explorer or Firefox URL
    http://localhost:8080/ch06/ch06_02.jsp) I get the error further
    below. Things I have done and made sure they are in place are:
    set up JAVA_HOME to C:\Apps\jdk1.6.0_06
    Using CATALINA_BASE: C:\Apps\apache-tomcat-6.0.16
    Using CATALINA_HOME: C:\Apps\apache-tomcat-6.0.16
    Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: C:\Apps\apache-tomcat-6.0.16\temp
    Using JRE_HOME: C:\Apps\jre1.6.0_06
    I did a google on the error and I found people saying to place the
    tools.jar from the jsk into the lib directory under CATALINA_HOME. But
    the examples still don't work. What step could I be missing? Your help is greatly

    I just updated the directories of the variables to reflect the current status of my system.

    What is wrong is that you are using an "old" jsp tutorial :-)
    Since Java 1.4, JSPs have been unable to access classes in the "default" package.
    What you need to do:
    Put the java class ch06_01 in a package.
    Steps to do this
    - Edit ch06_01 and add the following to the very top of the file (without the quotes): "package mypackage;"
    - create a folder "mypackage"
    - move ch06_01.java into that folder
    - compile that class (now in the mypackage package)
    - place ch06_01.class under C:\Apps\apache-tomcat-6.0.16\webapps\ch06\WEB-INF\classes\mypackage
    In your jsp:
    <%@ page import="mypackage.ch06_01" %>
    I would suggest using a more up-to-date tutorial that uses JSTL.
    Take a look at this [Apache Tomcat tutorial|http://www.coreservlets.com/Apache-Tomcat-Tutorial/index.html]

    ***************** END TOMCAT ERROR MESSAGE *********************

    Hi
    I am running my Tomcat apps (on a Windows dev machine) in an alternate location (ie. not default webapps). The same crap comes to me every time. Unable to install etc. I have tried every trick in the book regarding classpath settings etc.
    When I use 'javap' to check the classpath from any location on my machine, its works and javap returns the signature of my class.
    When I use it though Tomcat (with the import set to include the filename), it get the error. I have heard rumors that using JDK 1.3 in stead of 1.4 helps, but I just want it to work with 1.4 :)
    So if any of you can help me on this, please.
    PS. On my linux server it works just fine, as does every other thing on that machine ;)

  • Calling a servlet (in Tomcat) from a JSP Page (in Apache)

    I have a web form in my JSP Page, which upon submits, will send the params to a servlet. The servlet will then process the request and send the results back to the calling JSP Page.
    with that above senario, is there any way for me to reference a servlet (resides in Tomcat) from a JSP Page (resides in Apache HTTP Server)?
    Thanks!

    Apache HTTP server isn't a servlet/JSP engine.
    Your JSP runs on Tomcat, right where the servlet does. Apache just forwards the request.

  • Why we need to restart server when we compile servlet (not for jsp)

    hi
    why we need to restart server/appln when we compile servlet .
    same thing is not true for jsp
    as jsp converts to servlets then also it need not require restart of server/appln.

  • Customized JSP Page for LOV from a OAF Page

    We want a customized LOV page that will be a new JSP page instead of OAF JRAD XML. Right next to this new item we will put a link to open us this new JSP page. The base page is OAF page. When user selects the data from the new LOV JSP page, it has to be passed to the base page items. Is it possible to acheive this?

    You cannot do that, all queries and eventual data binds to UIX beans must ha[[en through VOs.
    What I can suggest as a workaround is this.
    1. Create a normal LOV based on a VO
    2. Create rows for the LOV VO
    3. populate the attributes of the VO row with the values that you have in your collection object.
    4. Insert the row in your VO.
    Thanks

  • Can't start Tomcat after installing Bea WorkShop for JSP

    Hi,
    I have been using Eclipse SDK Version: 3.1.2 Build id: M20060118-1600 and Web Tools Project 1.0.2 and Tomcat 5.0 and Tomcat 5.5 for about 2 months with no problems. But now I Can't start Tomcat after installing Bea WorkShop for JSP plug-in. I get "Server Tomcat v5.0 @ localhost failed to start". Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I installed BEA Workshop for JSP Version: 3.1.0
    Build id: 536. I only wanted to install the plug-in to my existng Eclipse 3.1 / WTP application. The only option that I saw was to download the entire FullWorkshopFreeInstall-536.zip, which is 192,496 KB. During the installation, there is a screen that you can specify to only install the plug-in - and I selected that option. Today, I chose to uninstall the BEA Workshop for JSP and then I was again able to start Tomcat server. I then did a complete install of BEA Workshop for JSP into a totally separate location. My original Eclipse installation still works fine, but my Workshop for JSP Version (which is now a completely new installation) has the same problem with Tomcat that I reported with the plug-in. I am using j2sdk1.4.2_08 and have tried both Tomcat 5.0 and Tomcat 5.5. I have the same problem with both Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional.
    Thanks for your assistance.

  • Use of xml syntax for jsp's in tomcat 4.0.1?

    hi,
    i am playing around with jsp's on tomcat 4.0.1. when i use xml tags in my jsp's, it appears that tomcat ignores them, eg:
    <jsp:scriptlet>
    code
    </jsp:scriptlet>
    Tomcat does not seem to be running the code - it just prints it out on the screen.
    If I use
    <%
    code
    %>
    it works fine. This also seems to happen for other XML tags, such as <jsp:directive.page>
    Does Tomcat support JSP documents (ie: where all jsp tags are XML?). If it's Servlet 2.3 compliant, I figured it would have to.
    Perhaps I am just doing something foolish?
    Guidance is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Not anything definitive, although a colleague told me that apparenlty not all tags were supported by Tomcat. I suppose there are a few options such as looking at the Jasper source code.

  • Directory structure in Tomcat for JSP

    I am new to JSP/Tomcat
    I have the following jsp page, classtest.jsp stored in %tomcat%webapps/myproject

    int x = myhi.doSpeak();

    </html>and the class file defining Sayhi is in %tomcat%webapps/myproject/WEB-INF/classes/com/clanda/mypack/Sayhi.class
    package mypack;
    public class Sayhi {
         public int doSpeak() {
              return 123;
    }I get the following Tomcat/Jasper error "Sayhi cannot be resolved to a type". I have run out of ideas? Can some one please put me right.
    Many thanks
    Bob

    You have defined your Sayhi class to be in the mypack package but you have put it under com/clanda/mypack/.
    Recompile your Sayhi class in the correct package:
    package com.clanda.mypack;Then replace the Sayhi .class file under %tomcat%webapps/myproject/WEB-INF/classes/com/clanda/mypack/
