Restaurant management app with some PDAs
Hi,
I was asked to make an application for a restaurant,
following this basic scenario:
The waiter will take the order from customer on PDA, then
printer in the bar should print out the drinks and printer in the
kitchen should print out the meals. Later on the the waiter will
charge the customer and print out the receipt. In the back office
manager should see all the orders and products in stock in the
database.
Is it possible to make this somehow with Flex/Air ? I've got
experience building web apps with Flex/ Coldfusion, but this has to
run locally.
OK, there could be one Air app running on the local machine
in the back office which would work with the database &
printers and second Air app installed on the PDA just to send the
order.
But how can the PDA app communicate with the main app when
there is no server ? Some kind of LocalConnection via wireless
network ?

Thanks. I didn't know that Air doesnt' work on devices. But
normal Flash player should work on them, shouldn't it ? So, what
about just putting normal swf or projector on the PDA ? Could it
possibly communicate with the Air app in the back office?

Note taking app with some precise features
I've become involved in a new project for which I have to submit some (mostly scientific) articles. So I think I need some sort of a note-taking app, but I necessarily want it to have some precise features. Thus, I want to:
1. Be able to write rich text, with images, tables, colors;
2. Be able to export my articles from the app's format to some popular format like doc or even pdf;
3. Assign tags to my articles and search within the app by tags;
4. Organize my notes/articles in some kind of "notebooks", like folders;
5. Also have an iOS companion, so I can review and even edit the notes on my iPad.
I've been searching a lot and I really can't find "the app" that can do all this. The best I found is Evernote, but it's very frustrating that I cannot export from it to pdf or doc. Also, the fact that you need a Premium account to use it offline, it's quite frustrating.

I don't know if I posted in the right discussion thread, but I couldn't find one more appropriate.Unlike many third party note applications for many years now, neither the OS X Notes application or the iOS Notes application "appear" to offer any obvious basic features to organize or categorize their notes, say with folders or labels/tags, to help one in their productivity.
Is this correct?
The OS X Notes Application can be scripted and automated with AppleScript to create folders with the "folder class," but that seems like a lot of work just to get the ability to keep notes organized, especially when such a basic feature should already be part of the application.
But what if someone new to Mac and OS X needed to organize their notes within the Notes application say by creating folders, how would someone do that other than the aforementioned?
And what if someone new to Mac and OS X needed to categorize and/or sort across all of their notes within the Notes application using tags, how would someone do that?
Lastly, what if person new to Mac and OS X, OR better yet, say someone NOT new at all to Mac and OS X didn't want to turn to a third party solution for such two very basic features; is that person just SOL? -
Is AIR the right platform for photo management app?
I need to build a web-enabled photo management app with the following features:
server sign-in and authentication
photos fetched from server via REST API/XML
tag, rate (i.e. 1-5 stars), and edit properties for photos, with data updated on or sync-ed with server
all the RIA UI goodies, like multi-select, drag/drop, AJAX-style auto-complete, overlay icons on thumbs,
all the photo management goodies, like fast scrolling, histograms, resizeable thumbnail
able to handle 1000s of photos in 1 album (server is on a local LAN)
One key issue is how the platform loads an album with 1000s of photos in the background, and scrolls through pages of thumbnails. I tried before to build this in Java and all the threading issues were too much for me.
I have good experience with CakePHP & MySQL and some experience with Java, but I am resigned to learning a new platform/libs. I just need to know where to invest my learning time.
Can some experienced users pipe in on whether AIR the right platform for me to build on? Should I use Javascript etc, or learn Flex?
Is there anything out there I could just build on? I'm also considering building on Yahoo YUI or Google GWT as an alternative.

m.Let me clarify the issue of 1000s of photo. I the app would need to load thumbnails for 1000s of photos, but only open the full size photo when the thumbnail is clicked. probably 120px max dimension, pre-rendered on the server. I have tried to open 1000 thumbs in a plain html page, and the photos come quickly - as if from the local file system - but it does seem to slow the UI until everything is loaded.
Is there a way for AIR to load the thumbnails is the current "view port" immediately, and the rest in the background? YUI has an imageLoader class that does something like this. Could I use this within AIR?
The other requirement is to manage a DB of tags ratings, and other attributes for the photos, but I can't imagine that is a big challenge. right? -
Some videos are semi-missing - they do not show up in File Manager apps or another app
I have what I will call three FILER apps: File Browser, Air Browser and File Commander. I also have MovieSRTPlayer. Those apps appear to not register the presence of some video files that I have definitely copied to my PB. The MovieSRTPlayer will overlay a .srt file's text over a video allowing the pb to show subtitles. It works as long as it can find the video and srt files.
I am definitely transferring a series of video files to the pb's video folder. I am also transferring a companion file to that folder. The companion file is a subtitle file in the form of an .SRT file.
THREE file manager type apps do NOT show those files as present in the video folder. The Video app itself does show and play those video files.
I have copied the files using both wifi-sharing and when they did not show up that way, I copied them using the usb cable to the pb's Z: drive and the video folder.
As stated the dam! files play in the video app. But they do not appear in the various filer apps. And they also do not show in another app, one that will display the subtitle (.srt file) file overlaying the video. In all instances it is as if the pb does not register the presence of those files on the pb.
Now, what is interesting is that when this first cropped up, 7 files were missing - just a mix of video (no .srt files involved). That is they showed in the video app and played but the filer programs did not show them. I managed last night and this morning to get 7 of those to finally show by copying/moving/deleting and recopying. But now I'm running into this brick wall again. I have repeatedly copied two video (avi files) and their companion .srt files to the video folder. They are in that folder (I've looked using usb and wifi-sharing) and they play in the PB's video app. They are most certainly on my pb.
Oh, and yes, I've rebooted a number of times.
Ideas?I have what I call 3 file manager apps. File Browser, Air Browser and File Commander (the older free version).
They all show or don't show the same thing. So files are missing. And SIZE is not the sole determining factor. When I was testing MovieSRT and "lost" some files I copied and renamed avi and .srt files. So there are two extra .srt files in the Video folder. But while they are 32kb (kilobytes) and 58kb respectively, they do NOT show up in the File managers. The other two identical files with the names matching the .avi files do show up. The one very large mp4 (2gb) does not show up. A subfolder I created just as a test does not show up. But the large mp4 and subfolder were showing up while I was actively copying the 2gb file - they would show up as the file was being copied - the filemanagers showed the file getting larger and larger and while doing so the "missing" subfolder also kept showing up. Then once the large file was completely copied, both it and the subfolder "disappeared" - again, the large mp4 does show in the Video app and it plays.
My persistence probably is based on the fact I was a computer programmer many eons ago! Also, I was trying to get YOUR app to work and the avi files were not showing up in your listing but they were showing and playing in Video app (but no subtitles). Finally, after copying/moving/re-copying over and over including moving and copying to the PB's Print folder (just since it was empty) and copying it back to the video folder (now 2 copies), the files would finally show up. Peculiar - yup!
Oh, one other thing - the 3 file managers all show what I will call the virtual Playbook-Demo video in their listings - your app does NOT show it. Obviously, it is not located in the Video Folder but somewhere in the bowels of the PB. So, the filemanagers are relying on some "file structure" that is not fully correct. But your app does not appear to show it. -

why is it when i update my status on facebook from iphone it splits the updates into two differents boxes with some funky symbols at the beginning.. Two possibilities, one is you should close apps on the iPad, the other is your internet speed is not able to handle the demands of a high speed device.
To close apps: Double click home button, swipe up to close the apps.
To solve internet problem, contact your provider. Basic internet is not enough for video games and movies. Your router may be old and slow. -

Epson: No Duplex Scan with some apps form the mac store

I have an problem with my epson scanner and some apps from the App Store.
My Epson Workforce 3540 can duplex scanning. With Image Capture this works. But with some apps from the appstore, witch uses self-scanning dialogs, and not the image capture dialog, it do not work. I can select duplex scan, the printer scans the first side, change the papger site, and scan the other side, but the application gets only the first side.
I tested one other printer and this worked.
I contact the developer, the said: We use standard apis from apple (ICDeviceBrowser, ICScannerDevice) and their is noch way make a failure. Then I contact Epson and they told me: Contact Apple!
Is this problem new? It must be a driver problem, or? Help!

Upgraded to IO6, seems like the amount of system memory to run is higher, this causes issues with some Apps. I can't get SIRI to work because the amount of free system memory is not enough. how can I tell what is eating the system memory?

Big Fish Games stop working in Mavericks. What do I do? I have re-installed them and the manager app, and nothing. I have not gotten an answer from Big Fish tech staff. Thought the problem might be with Maverick. all the games worked with Snow Leopard
Any body have this kind of problem. What was done to correct it. . .I can't wait to get a new phone as well. LG Revolution owners should be comped for this phone if Verizon intends to keep them as customers.

My sound only works through the ear phones with some apps....
With some apps (Games and books) I can only get sound on my IPAD 2 though the earphones...this just recently occured. With movies the sound goes through the speakers just fine. Is there some adjustment I can make so I can hear the games without using the ear phones?
Make sure that you haven't got notifications muted (which will affect most games, but not iPod or Videos apps, nor earphones). Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to, notifications can either be muted by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar (the function that the switch isn't performing is on the task bar instead) : double-click the home button to bring up the task bar, slide the bar to the right, and it's the icon far left. Somehow my wife has ended up with some of my apps on her iPhone, and I have some of her apps on my iPhone. So, when I update apps on my phone, some of them ask me for her apple ID password. How do I get her apps off my phone.
Do you guys use the same computer with itunes on it? And the best way to get them off is to go into the Setting>Itunes & App Store and sign out of her appleid if it's listed there. Also just delete all of the apps from her appleid off your phone.

Starting with BC, DW, or Muse trying to create a restaurant menus app
I have been following videos from BC-Gurus about creating an app for restaurant menus. BC seems easy, but it becomes frustrating trying to create the app with multiple menus (Chinese, Grill, Kids, etc.), multiple course types(Starter, vegetarian, beef, etc.).
I'd appreciate someone pointing me to a menu app creation tutorial, or a widget, or advice.
I also wish there was a comprehensive book on BC app building I could purchase.
